COMPLETE! [SP-F1] The Grind Pt. 2

Recommended Posts

Another day, another chance to grind for experience points out in the floors of Aincrad. The sun was just peeking over the horizon when Teselmar made his way out of the City of Beginnings' gate, adjusting the weapon at his side, and turning his mind to the task at hand. Time to find some monsters to kill. Bearing in mind the lesson in humility he'd been dealt last time he came out to the field, he was determined to find a challenge that was on his level. Bit off more than I could chew last time...

The breeze tousled his saffron hair as he strode through the now-familiar fields, a brand new weapon in the sheath on his belt. Pinprick, a gold hilted rapier of frightful accuracy and excellent make. It had been a gift from his friend Ishida, and Teselmar didn't want to let him down by not utilizing the exquisite weapon to its fullest, so he made his way across the lilting hills and wide open spaces that comprised Floor 1.

A slug type monster, <<Escraggroo>>, was on the edge of the tree line as Teselmar approached the forest. It was an ugly creature, leaving a slime trail as it slowly shuffled along under its rocky shell. Players who had gotten overconfident had met their end at he hands of such an enemy, the craggy shell being able to fire spikes when the monster attacked. Teselmar decided, with caution, to try and farm one for materials.

Teselmar drew his rapier, and got within the Escaggro's range. The bubbling, oozing snail monster turned towards him, stalk eyes blinking rheumily as its mottled brown body followed. With a jubilant battle cry, he opened with an attempt to Stun the creature, closing in and performing the sword art Above. His blade hissed through the air, intending to smash into the deceptively quiet Escaggro.

As per his custom, Teselmar missed like a big dumb idiot. His sword -Cliiiing!!-ed off the monster's rocky shell as it withdrew its stalk eyes, evading his attack and suffering no damage. Teselmar sighed. Wouldn't be one of my fights if I didn't start by flubbing an attack...

The Escaggro bubbled menacingly as Teselmar backed up, and an array of spikes protruded from its back with a -Sssnikt-! It moved surprisingly well for a cephalopod, and targeted the young man as he tried circling the slimy monster. With a -Shhuuup-! It launched a spiny attack at Teselmar, hoping to skewer him.

The spiky protrusion flew past Teselmar's face as he stopped in his tracks. The shot had been close, but Teselmar had been able to didge it. Pheww.

Teselmar knew that fighting in this world was a bit of a luck-based system. It wasn't something he agreed with terribly, although on occasion, his own life experience as a fighter was able to net him some wins. This time, he tried the trick again, targeting the other eye stalk in an attempt to stun it with Above. His thin blade whipped out once more, as Ishida's handiwork sped towards its target.

The monster was -just- too quick, barely withdrawing into the shell again as Pinprick shot towards it. The blade was fast and light in his hand, but he had never fought an Escaggro before. They didn't look like much, but they were certainly not to be trifled with.

The Escaggro made a sound that was akin to pudding starting to boil on an incredibly hot surface, and it moved once again. Moving after Teselmar with alarming agility, it attempted to once more shoot a spike into the fencer.

ID# 44682 results: Mob: 9 (of course. why do I even bother.)

The spike caught Teselmar between the ribs, making him hiss at the sensation of simulated pain. To be fair, it was very much dulled down in this world, more like a cool sensation than the feeling of actually having a spike in one's side. Still, Teselmar couldn't look at the rock-like stalagmite in his side and not feel some phantom of pain.

Teselmar sighed. Why is nothing ever easy? He just wanted to get stronger, was that so much to ask? Apparently the aggressive conch monster in front of him thought as much. Teselmar moved Pinprick's blade up, covering his face. The sword art Accel Stab began this way, and after a brief moment of holding the sapphire blade aloft, he plunged it neatly towards his foe.

The blows rained down on the Escaggro, finding their marks as it shuddered. The swift and sure stabs caught it between the rocky plates that made up its shell, and seared an angry red line across the space between its eye stalks. He'd done some damage with that one! The creature reeled, and Teselmar saw its hit points dip into the yellow. It was a hard beast to pin down, but when he did, he could really see how much stronger he had gotten.

Reeling backwards, the creature's rocky shell shifted, and much to Teselmar's surprise, it came off entirely! The Escaggro ripped it off, appearing very much like a garden slug underneath it, albeit with one disturbingly muscular human arm that had been hiding underneath. He blinked, taking in the sight. "O-okaaaaay... That... is making me super uncomfortable just looking at it." He said out loud, staring at the horror before him. The Escaggro responded by picking up the shell with its giant arm, and swinging it like a club at Teselmar!

Teselmar dropped low, getting virtual dirt on his virtual reinforced suit as he hit the deck. The shell arced over his head, and Teselmar whistled; he'd have been knocked on his @$$ if that thing had hit him. So, avoid that...

Rising to his feet again, Teselmar saw his opportunity as the monster swung its giant shell around like a stone club. It had worked well for him before, so he would attempt Accel Stab once more. Dodging another huge swing of the stony chitin, he powered up his blade and made an attempt to drive Pinprick into the cracks in his opponent's defense.

Thanks to enhanced accuracy of Pinprick, Teselmar found it easier to find areas to strike the beast in its center of mass. Once, twice, thrice he drove his glowing rapier into the creature's squishy flesh, making it flail and froth in rage. Teselmar rolled clear as the shell came around for another pass. "I knew underneath it all, you were a big softy!" He teased the slug thing with a coy grin. The creature looked to be on its last legs, but Teselmar felt the system locking up his muscles; his energy had run low, and he couldn't do a move like that again for a little while. Best to play it safe...

Enraged and in a desperate frenzy, the Escaggro made a move that surprised Teselmar: it leaped high into the air as an oversized human leg, ripped with muscle, was revealed under its body. The man stood with his mouth agape as the slug monster dropped from the sky, trying to deliver a driving kick to the man where he stood.

ID# 44687 results: Mob: 6 (hit)

Teselmar felt the giant foot slam him in the head as the monster landed. While not a fatal blow or a critical one, the impact still threw Teselmar a good five yards away. The fencer rose shakily, still disgusted and fascinated by the arm and leg. "What... are you? Ugh!"

Teselmar needed energy to perform his attacks, so he bided his time this turn. He chose to focus on doing his best to avoid more attacks like the last one. As he moved, he pondered what sort of sick, twisted mind came up with a monster like that. Oh yeah, the same one who thought that it'd be loads of fun to trap 10,000 people inside of a giant MMO and see how many of them die. Yeah, he made such great choices.

Escaggro was growing impatient, making that frothy gurgling noise as its macabre arm picked up its shell once again. Using it like a hammer, the monstrosity leapt high into the air, intending to bring it down on top of Teselmar! Gritting his teeth, Teselmar attempted to evade it.

ID# 44689 results: Mob: 10 (dang.)

It made the earth ripple with a small seismic wave as it came crashing down! Teselmar was tossed from his feet, landing a few ards away before shakily rising. Now I see why this thing kills low leveled players so often...

Judging by the emerald glow that had begun to surround his blade once again, Teselmar figured that he had enough energy to launch another sword art. If he missed, he'd have to dodge again, but it was worth a shot. Spinning around the monster as it crashed its shell into the tree behind him, Teselmar cartwheeled over the abomination's foot as it lashed out, and began the motion for Rip Ravine.

ID# 44693 results: Battle: 7+3=10 (hit!) | Loot: 5 (nothing. ;__; )

Teselmar had gotten used to Rip Ravine rarely landing. For some reason, what should have been his go-to sword art was seemingly his worst one. And yet...

As the thin bladed carved two long stripes into the snail monster, it seemed like it had done the trick. With a final gurgle, the Escaggro was defeated, slumping before it disintegrated into a shower of pixels. Teselmar flicked the light off of his blade, shaking particles free like wiping blood from a sword. He returned Pinprick to its sheath, satisfied with its performance. "No loot drop, but at the very least I got some experience." He said aloud, checking his menu. "Get used to disappointment." He quoted to himself with a smirk.

Within a few minutes of being out of combat, his energy would return, so Teselmar wasn't worried. He knew that his health would regenerate quickly as well, once there was no oppressive enemy presence nearby. He decided to take a stroll to a slightly safer area and smell the roses, so to speak.

The floor was beautiful during the day, and the smell of flower fields assailed his senses. The sun beating down was a chipper sight, and no clouds were scheduled for today's weather rotation. Teselmar hummed to himself as he realized that this was the first "successful" monster fight he'd pulled off: He picked a target, and wasn't forced to run away. It was a good feeling...

Teselmar decided in his bit of free time to hunt for some materials. It would do him some good to have something to trade vendors with besides his hard earned Col. If he was going to buy a house on one of the top floors one day, he'd have to start saving now.

He looked around, and pulled up his map. A field where tailors tended to search for cotton was less than a 10 minute walk away; it was worth going for it. He stretched, yawning in the lazy, complacent heat of a summer's day in Aincrad, then strolled up the path towards the cotton fields.

Feeling his energy race back up to full as he had been out of combat for some time now, Teselmar scouted the field where cotton buds were supposed to grow. Shifting the long blade on his hip, he waded into the sea of grass, attempting to find any blooming white stalks in an ocean of tall viridian blades.

Muttering a prayer of thankfulness, Teselmar stood agape at his luck; a <<Fluffy Cotton>> plant was revealed by the first clump of grass that he'd checked!

Teselmar doubted he'd be so lucky very many times, but it couldn't hurt to try. He bent his back, rummaging amongst the grass stalks once more as he searched. Other players were spread out across the field, most doing the same with disappointed faces. He'd been fortunate before.

ID# 44698 results: Loot: 9

Not this time. He let out a disappointed grunt as his search in this area turned up nothing. Perhaps a different section of the field would turn up some more materials.

Crossing the field and taking his time in the toasty sunlight, Teselmar scanned solemnly for more cotton. It had been a run of great luck to have found any, so even if he didn't find anything else today, he would consider the day a win.

ID# 44699 results: Loot: 12 (fail)

So close; he thought he spotted a speck of white, but it turned out to be a rabbit of some kind. Didn't seem like it wanted to attack him, so Teselmar let it get away. Silly rabbit, mat farming is for kids. And disgruntled thrill-seekers.

Continuing his search, Teselmar waved briefly at a few tailors who were making their way back from the fields, bundles of the white fluff in their arms. He suspected that tailors had items or some other method that made it easier for them to find materials quicker.

Not deterred by his relative dry run, Teselmar put his eyes to field once more.

ID# 44700 results: Loot: 18 (yeah!)

His trained eyes spotted something samite and gleaming in the light of the sun. He stooped, finding the cotton and pocketing it. Another mat down! He'd see if he could find any more before he headed back to Town.

Bending almost doubled, Teselmar scrambled around on his hands and knees near the are where he'd found the other cotton. Hopefully, where there had been one, there would be another. He strained to see, tripping at one point and falling face first into the tall grass. "Great... You know," he joked at the empty sky up above, "A face-plant isn't the kind of plant I'm looking for."

ID# 44701 results: Loot: 1 (ech.)

But it was all that he found. Teselmar figured he had enough daylight to make one more search attempt before heading back. He had people he was going adventuring with, and he didn't want to disappoint!
