COMPLETE [F1-SP] Smithin' ain't easy! Redux <<Making a Living>>

Recommended Posts

One could never have enough materials when they were a crafter.  It was better to be overwhelmed by them than be desperately in need.  Ishida was informed by one of his repeated comrades, Opal, that he could retake the <<Making a Living>> quest for additional material gains.  It proved to be more efficient than farming mobs as a tank.

After accepting the quest from the Blacksmithing trainer, Ishida exited the gates and headed out into the farming area beyond the Town of Beginnings.  In lieu of the accurate finesse of his Eagleclaw, he re-equipped his Blackfang sword for the additional damage. (-3 ACC, +2 DMG)  He was still working on finding that sweet spot for his gear.

He didn't have to spend too much time searching for a suitable group of monsters to begin farming in order to secure the necessary materials to complete the crafting quest.  Ishida wasn't one to just pace around and think of the best strategy for taking out a horde of aggressive boars like some players; he would have much rather just jump right into the middle of them and see how things shake out.

That is exactly what he did.

Right from the start, his sword illuminated with a brilliant blue aura as he prepared the Sword Art: Rage Spike.  Ishida charged straight at the quartet of mobs and vaulted into the air, only to divebomb at the creatures like he was a meteorite that broke through the atmosphere.  The residual strike of his connection with the ground washed over the beasts, causing initial damage that was only furthered by a follow-up whirlwind attack.

Not to be outdone the black armored player, the angered mobs all turned in and went to town on the teenager with countless vicious headbutts.  The horned teeth protruding from their mouths only managed to cause further harm to the unsuspecting player.  It was moments like those that Ishida was greatly appreciative of all his protective equipment.

Ishida staggered as the blows kept raining in.  Just when he thought he found his footing, another boar would charge him and strike with a ferocious headbutt.  It wasn't long before the group had knocked him out of their circle of pain and sent him teetering to the ground.  His heavy metal armor clunked and clanked as he tumbled but as difficult as it was, the teenager got up again for another round of combat.

He wasn't about to get beaten by some common boars.  Feeling that his last attack was pretty effective, he decided to go about it again.  His longsword illuminated with a familiar blue glow as he dashed into the huddle of boars and started lashing out in a series of precise slices once Rage Spike activated.

As much damage as he inflicted, it didn't stop the boars from repeatedly battering him like a piece of tough meat.  They continued to ram him as soon as his technique finished, beating on him like he was an intruder interrupting their secret pig rendezvous.  If it wasn't for the enchantments of his armor, he would be at a considerable loss of HP right now.  However, his regeneration enhancement kept him sustained enough to continue battling.

Those two Sword Arts had taken the most of his energy out of him.  While he had enough to keep meleeing the boars down one by one, he preferred to eliminate them all at once.  This round, and probably the next couple of rounds, Ishida would be playing defense and hiding behind the protective perimeter of his tower shield, the Wall of Night.  He much preferred to be on the offense but it seemed, as a Tank in the world of Aincrad, he would be spending most of his time defending so he had better get used to the idea now before it came a problem later.

In their furious frenzy, the boars lost the coordination to keep track of Ishida and as he moved and dodged behind his shield, they faltered as they charged him.  Not one of the boars connected with the teenager that round, leaving him to comfortably regain an energy point.

Again, Ishida was playing it passively, doing his best to avoid the boars while recuperating his missing energy.  This was definitely the road less traveled for him but he was comfortable with it because the outcome of this battle was clear as day.  All he needed to do was bide his time and wait for the opportune time to finish the beasts off, if they didn't do it themselves on against the mighty strength of his armor.

Right now, he felt invincible, like a running back shaking any and every tackle that came his way.  As soon as a boar got anywhere close to him, he'd either force it to faceplant in the dirt with his shield or completely juke its charge angle.  Same as last round, not a single one came made unwanted contact with him--just the way he liked it.

Patience wasn't exactly one of his virtues but he managed to put up a good front regarding them.  The most important thing in survival was waiting for the right time and striking while the iron was hot.  One misstep, one hurried judgement and bam, you become nothing more than pixels in the wind.  That didn't really apply to this situation--as Ishida's hesitation was mostly in part to his lack of energy.  He burned a little too bright, too early on and now he had to stay on the lookout for his enemies while he played catch up.

Well, it was about time.  Suffering a loss of four health points was acceptable if it meant his enemies perished as a result.  When Ishida saw the right opportunity, he put aside the protection of his shield to allow the boar's into his defenses.  Each one struck with a mighty, feral attack but immediately suffered the wrath of his thorns aura.  Their low health wasn't sufficient enough to withstand the damage they had done to themselves and upon their combat resolving, they dissipated into pixels.

A loot screen appeared before his eyes; one that was greedily accepted.

Well, that was something.  Usually it took a lot less time for his enemies to off themselves against the resilience of his armor.  Regardless, they fell in the end and that was all that mattered.  A slow but good outcome was still leagues better than a quick, bad outcome--especially the one's where Ishida wasn't coming out alive.

Despite the fact that he could have rushed directly into another battle, the teen decided to play it safe and regenerate all his missing health and energy first.  That didn't stop him from searching for materials as he wandered about the tall waves of grass.  He was never too lucky at the prospecting angle of material collecting but it was something to do in the downtime between battles.

You never know, he might get lucky once in a while.

Not that time apparently.  His shop and forge was one of the few places he felt comfortable being entirely alone.  As long as he had something to keep him busy, Ishida was happy.  Most of the stuff that came out of his shop was absolute junk but every once in a while he made something that was worth remembering.  In fact, all the equipment that he was currently wearing was made by him and that said a lot; the teenager only wanted the best of armor to protect him.  It was just an added benefit that he had hand crafted all of said equipment.

As he continued recovering, he searched the area again for more materials.

"Lucky~yyyyy~" he cheered as he scooped up a material lurking within the overgrown grass.  He quickly stowed the material in his equipment as he proceeded on.

A quick glance at his HUD indicated that his health and energy had both replenished completely.  He was now ready to get back into the thick of it with the nasty boars that roamed the area.  For the most part, that was exciting but being that he wasn't much of a damage dealer, he could really get stuck in some engagements that went on far too long.

However, he didn't find a suitable pack of boars nearby.  Rather than let his time go to waste as he wandered in search of more enemies, he also did his best to keep on the lookout for any loose materials he could pick up.

"Yahoo~!" he exclaimed upon finding another usable material.  Ishida silently wondered if this is what it was like when Davros went material farming with his treasure hunter's gear.  He continued to reflect upon the idea of actually being a Treasure Hunter in a world like Aincrad.  Was such a thing even possible?  It sounded absolutely preposterous but at the same time, the inner child within him thought it was pretty neat.

Dropping his most recently found material in his inventory, he crested the top of a grassy hill and laid his sights on an entire field of angry boars.  Ishida's eyes actually went a little wide as he looked upon the lot of them before they started twinkling.  It was hog Heaven.

  • LD: 20

The teen prepared for battle and started to rush down the hill but before he could get too far, he tripped over a large obstruction and fell flat on his face.  He rolled about in anger to face the object of his ire and was pleasantly surprised to find another material.  He forgave the large chunk of ore and deposited into his inventory before righting himself and truly preparing for a fight.

The material train was rolling through town and Ishida made sure he was aboard.  He looked among the congregations of boars in search of a group that fit his requirements.  It wasn't long after that he had chosen a pack that he would dismantle in his search for more materials.  While he knew from past experience that he could complete the quest at almost any time, there was no reason for him to go back when he was on such a roll.

Carefully checking to make sure there wasn't anything that was going to further trip him up, Ishida raced down the hill and charged into a pack of boars at full speed.  At the very front was a particularly mean looking beast that had an appearance to him that was just craving a good thrashing from his Blackfang.  As he closed into close quarters, the teen raised his sword high in the air and brought it down in an attempt to cleave the pig in two.

It was apparent he misjudged the speed of the boar as soon as it dodged out of the way and his blade drove deep into the soft ground beneath them.  One with the hive mind, all four boars recoiled before charging and battering the black ironclad fighter.  However, their strength wasn't enough to truly cause him harm--well, not nearly as much as they caused to themselves upon his thorns aura.

Whatever.  So he couldn't hit them?  So what?  As long as they were taking damage from him, it didn't matter what the source was.  At least, that is how he figured.  He could have geared himself toward damage and accuracy but then he wouldn't be nearly as resilient as he was encased in his suit of armor.  He preferred to survive over causing a few extra damage with his sword.

Ishida laughed abruptly at the boar's futile attempts to overcome him.  He turned to the same boar he targeted before and lashed out at him with a quick thrust, looking to give the beast a good stab in the bacon for the damage he had caused.

  • ID# 45054

And stab he did, although there wasn't a whole lot of damage behind it.  Meanwhile, the riled up boars rolled in at him again for another salvo of headbutts but ended up tripping over themselves instead.  Ishida hoped the dirt tasted good.

He kept his focus on the one but noticed that the others were starting to creep up after their little downtrodden vacation.  Ishida looked the main board dead in his cold, beady black eyes and gave him a little wink as he pointed his sword at the monster.  A faint glow immediately sprang up around the entire weapon, originating at the hilt and spiraling up the blade until it was completely consumed.

"Let's see how you pigs try this on for size!  Your buddies from earlier didn't like it too much!" he harassed.

Ishida leaped at the group and unleashed the power of his Sword Art: Rage Spike, letting the AI intuitively guide his actions as he whirled around and laid into each of the boars with a set of precise strikes.  Two in total the entire group took before they attempted to fight back.  The damage they had sustained made it hard for them to concentrate enough to strike back at their attacker, leaving them wallowing in the grass again as they recuperated for next round.

A wave of light washed over all of Aincrad and instantly, Ishida felt different.  What was that?  Was that a change in the system?  Despite being in battle, he quickly searched over his equipment and stats and noticed a significant improvement in his damage mitigation and other miscellaneous tanking stats.  He felt glorious.

"Hah!  What an upgrade!  Bring it on, you mangy boars!" he shouted.

The same as last round, he grouped them up and plunged into the middle of them before activating his Sword Art: Rage Spike.  His sword brightly shone with a brilliant blue light as he attacked all of the boars surrounding him with a series of quick attacks.

With his enhanced defenses, Ishida didn't even bother retreating to safety while his energy regained.  Instead, he charged headlong into another group of boars and just let his armor do the work while he slowly recovered.  As he started to run through them, he howled out at them in order to get their attention.

They were only agitated enough to turn in his direction and snap their feral mouths at his armor.  It wasn't anything special and certainly wasn't enough to break through the resistances of his armor.  All in all, it was a pretty lackluster round of combat.

"What the?  Am I not doing it right?  Wasn't I supposed to draw hate with that?"  It looked like all his yelling had only mildly annoyed the boars.  At this point, he didn't really know what to do.  If he attacked, he would stop the slow accumulation of energy he was recovering but if he didn't, it's possible that he would just sit around and stare at these smelly beasts.  Usually, if you sat in a mob's aggro radius long enough, they would tune into the fact that you were loitering and take a try at defeating you.

Apparently, this was not the case for these boars.  They continued to just passively step around Ishida as he stood vigilant, waving about their wispy tails in quiet comfort, completely unaware of his presence.

"Oh, come on!  Don't you hogs want a piece of this?" he shouted while wiggling his armored leg, clanging all about.  "Would you like to know how much pork I ate last year?  Mmm!  So succulent!  If I was a chef, I would fry you boys right up and have myself a delicious dinner!"

Ishida didn't know if it was his taunting or just his standing around but the boars started to get agitated.  They started to turn about and look at him with ill intent in his eyes.  His own eyes widened a little bit as he looked upon them.  "Uh oh."

Sure enough, they had had enough of his taunting and were on the attack.  A vicious attack, at that.  They squealed and whined as they charged him, battering him with horned strikes and malicious bites--working extra hard to bite the scrumptious flesh beneath his steel.

Regardless, they could not get through and only succeeded in activating the regeneration enhancement of his spectacular armor.  He was regenerated to full and was feeling top notch!

"Hey, hey, hey~  I didn't think you'd take it so close to heart!  I didn't mean anything by it!" he continued shouting as their engagement continued.  Ishida raised his shield and placed it in front of him as he backpedaled away from the charging boars.  He was doing his best to keep behind the protection of the Wall, although his confidence was a little shaken at the tremendous sound of those wild animals deeply thumping against its exterior.

"Come on already!" he whined.  He was a little annoyed that this battle wasn't over already.  He bet if he had the backup of someone like Teselmar, this would have been over the first time around.  Ishida made a mental note to bring someone along with him the next time he wanted to farm some materials.  It probably would be a lot more lucrative for him.

Rather than sit idle another turn, he lashed out at the boars with his preferred Sword Art for farming: the AOE technique Rage Spike.  With his blade ignited in blue energy, he struck out and attacked the group of boars around him in quick succession.

"Oooh, I bet that stings, doesn't it?" he taunted with a light laugh.  Unfortunately, he didn't have the energy to do it again otherwise he would have laid into them good.  Instead, he did as he had done many times before and just stood there, defending against any attack that came his way.

Well, apparently not any attack because those boars were angered beyond a means that Ishida could hold them back.  They snuck by his defenses and just wailed on him from all angles, driving him down to one knee among the tall grass.  If it wasn't for the triggered benefit of his armor's regeneration, he would probably be feeling a lot more pain than he was.
