[F2-SP] A Time to Hunt - Bagging up those Wintery Flakes, Beginning Again pt 3 - COMPLETE!

Recommended Posts

Brax stepped out from behind the rocks, his reserves sufficiently restored to advance into the combat arena that the castle would provide.  Though, his damage on the other hand needed help.  He reached into his pack and extracted another Potion of Strength, looking and seeing only a few left for consumption.  The odds were in his favor, though, because he would soon level up, gaining strength and power, and would no longer need the assistance for a good while.  As he left the safety of the stone protecting the ladder down into the mountain, he beheld the beauty that was the castle ruins, his long search finally over.

Before he could even describe its appearance, several Bandits guarding the doors he could see shouted their displeasure at his coming.  They charged wildly, their weapons flying through the air in defiance of his showing up, unintelligible speech flying from their mouths as a garbled roar.  He dealt with them swiftly enough, cleaving several in half with his Lumberjack whilst avoiding their clumsy attacks.  After the opening salvo, only the Bandit Leader was left, his sharp sword at the ready.

The Leader's sword swung through the air, hitting Brax hard in the frozen aftermath of his Lumberjack attack.  He was stone still, waiting the required amount of time before his virtual body allowed him to retaliate properly.  When it did, Brax pushed the bandit away and brought his axe low for an uppercut, signaling his use of the Ultimate Breaker.  Two shots and an overhead attack later, the only thing left of the bandit mob was a disappearing shower of pixels.

The last of the bandits gone, Brax carefully studied the castle itself.  Much like the tower previously encountered, this structure was clearly showing it's age.  The walls were weathered and beaten by the winds cavorting about Floor Two, the surrounding grass dead or dying from lack of care by it's inhabitants, and just an all around look of decrepit disuse pervading the entirety of the building.  Even the gated entrance looked bad off, the wood almost rotted through in several places.

The problem, Brax found as he attempted to enter, was that the door had been boarded up from the inside, most assuredly by the bandits who called the locale home.  One swift swing of his axe clanging on the door summoned an 'Immortal Object' sign, meaning that to enter the castle would require another avenue.  He quickly moved away, thinking wisely that the sound of his knocking would attract unwanted attention.

He circled around the building to the right, looking for anything in the area that would signify a secret passage of some sort, the kind that might lead into the castle proper.  A rock out of place, a hole in the wall, even a well kept shrub that might hide the secret entrance he needed.  As he travelled, he came upon the second gate, guarded by more bandits, and their noticing eyes took in his appearance with anger.

The bandits charged at him, their rage evident as his discovery of their hideout, and it took all of Brax's experience to dodge their attacks.  He sidestepped the first one, the axe in the bandit's hand missing just by a hair, and Brax managed to raise his own to block the second one's sword.  Throwing the NPC into the last three bandits, he swung his axe wide to catch at least a few of them with his Lumberjack attack, cleaving four of them in half before parrying the last one's blade on the return swing.  It allowed Brax to avoid the retaliating blow while he was frozen in cooldown mode.

With a loud roar, Brax ended the life of the last bandit in his way, his Ultimate Breaker pulling it's weight with two uppercuts and a vertical bash to the head of the NPC, showering the battlefield with it's pixels.  He looked at the gate from which they had come, trying again in vain to break it down, but another 'Immortal Object' signed flashed in response, telling him that once again, getting inside would be no easy task.

He left the gate alone, continuing his circle around the castle ruins and searching for any sign that might let him in.  But everywhere he looked, nothing stood out.  Every blade of grass was perfect, either in death or in the course of dying.  The walls, while old and falling apart, were impenetrable by the skills he currently possessed, and windows looking out were too high to reach, and boarded up tight as well in defense against intruders.

'Perhaps I will not be able to enter the castle,' Brax thought darkly, 'for if entering is this difficult, it may be too high a level for me to handle.'  He did not let these thoughts bother him too much, but he could not shake the unmistakable fact that he seemed to lack the observational skills he had often believed he possessed.  If he did, finding a way in would be a cake walk, child's play.

Another corner rounded, another group of bandits guarding another gated door.  Brax saw them in the distance, a welcome break from his wanderings around the grounds.  They might even provide some answer as to why he could not get in, though the likelihood of his chances were not good.  Hefting his axe in anticipation, he charged at the mob before they had a chance to see him.

As he ran, his foot caught on something causing him to trip and land on his face hard.  Pixels spurted out from his nose, a dull throb emanating from the wound.  It would have broken his nose, the fall, had he been in the real world and not the virtual one, but soon the bleeding stopped as the game kicked in to staunch the flow.  Shaking his head at the stumble, he turned to look at what had made him trip, finding a material sticking out of the ground.  He wedged it out of the dirt and after a moment of examination, chose to take it with him.  Standing back up he again charged at the mob, ready for battle.

After he could move, Brax brought out his Lumberjack attack, swinging his axe three times in succession at the remaining horde from right to left, left to right, and right to left again.  He cleaved them in half, and their disemboweled bodies vanished into a shower of pixels whilst leaving behind a bevy of loot for him to collect.  Unfortunately for him, the gate they guarded was equally as 'Immortal' as the others, and nothing they dropped would be useful in opening it.

If he could have despaired, Brax would be several times over.  As it was, he had his...reservations, to be honest, but he was more frustrated than sad.  After all the time he had put into finding the place, after the many enemies he had to kill along the way and the dangers he had overcome, to be stymied by a door of all things was most annoying.

Perhaps he would need to invest some points into lock-picking, which fell under the Sneak and Hide skill, in order to break the locks on the doors.  Having said that, though, Brax could not recall there being any actual locks on the metal gates with the 'Immortal' tag.  So, in order to get in, the door would have to open to him somehow; either that, or he would have to find an entrance out in the surrounding countryside, which had thus far proven fruitless, which only added to his frustration.

He was rounding his way to the final gate, a ramshackle, rusty piece of twist metal that stood in front of an old wooden door, large and imposing in it's design.  Several more of the bandits stood watch, though these ones were led by a slightly stronger Bandit Lieutenant, armed with a greatsword strapped to it's back.  As he came into their line of sight, the Lieutenant came forth, drawing the weapon and attacking first.

Brax tried to catch the blow from the Lieutenant's sword on his own weapon, but he was just a hair too slow.  The Greatsword tore into his shoulderguards, drawing a few red pixels and jarring the man to the bone.  He took the blow in stride, though, and pushed the NPC off a ways, bringing his axe low for an Ultimate Breaker attack.  As it drew forwards to attack again, Brax let the attack fly, two swift uppercut to the chin dazing the Lieutenant before slamming it's head into the ground and killing it.  Through the shower of pixels the rest of the bandit mob charged forward, ready to avenge their leader.

A creaking sound distracted Brax for a moment, taking his attention from the battle enough to allow the rest of the squad to knock him back with their attacks.  Turning back to the bandits, he unleashed a Lumberjack in response, the sweeping strikes of his axe moving quickly through their ranks like a hot knife through butter.  Their only remains were the light show of their demises, and some col dropped by the RNG.  Wiping his blade of there blood, he turned to look at what had caused the noise he had heard.

The 'creak' had emanated from the gate, it's rusty hinges groaning in reply as they raised slowly, opening the way to the old wooden door.  Brax strode over, his cautious attitude not trusting the proffered help the death of the Lieutenant had seemingly provided.  'I guess the Lieutenant was the key,' Brax mused silently.  'Defeating it opened the way forward.  But now, the question is...what awaits on the other side?'  He pushed at the door with his axe, testing to see if it would give, and when it did he hefted his weapon, ready for whatever challenges waited inside.
