The gardens of Floor Two were breathtaking in their beauty, a wondrous sight to behold for those who enjoyed the pleasure of their flower's sweet fragrances as well as their vivid colors.  The beauty of the fields, though, held a darker secret: the presence of a field boss.  Brax had come across such a garden earlier in his career here, a lovely spot growing next to a lake that he had explored on one of his many hunting trips.  There he had encountered a team of Wind Wasps, killing several of them as they spawned, but apparently he had not killed enough.  For as he had learned during one of his searches through the Quest Board, if one killed enough of the Wasps, they could summon up a Wind Wasp Queen, their field boss of decent power and strength.  With that information in hand, Brax again returned to the fields of the 2nd floor in search of his garden spot, and hopefully a first encounter with a dreaded field boss.

HIs path was an uneventful one, and he found the hunting ground very easily.  Brax's memory of the trip was clear in his thoughts, his memories very easy to recall despite his amnesia and forgotten past.  The garden was much as he had left it, teaming with frogs down by the lake and a baying of wolves off in the distance, though his current hunting requirements did not include such beasts.  He was specifically here to hunt Wasps, the buzzing insects that he could see flitting from flower to flower.  They were his target, and he dispatched them with haste.  His body rumbled the ground with his passing, steady and sure in his movements.  With shoulderguards aimed low, at the last moment he jumped to connect with the mob swarming in midair, and after hitting them his Battle-Axe swept out to cut the mob cleanly in half, dispersing their crystalline lights over the garden they held in their sway.

Brax scanned the area once; he did not see the Wind Wasp Queen appear.  A wan smile crossed his countenance as he decided that it would have been too easy to have summoned the boss after only four kills.  'Then, I suppose I will be forced to wait.  Wait for my energy to return, and for the mob to respawn itself, so as to allow me to slay it yet again,' Brax mused silently, taking refuge behind a nearby outcropping of stones jutting from the grassy ground.  It would offer some obscuring of his position, in case the Wind Wasps came back before his energy did.

Brax was not entirely appreciative of the fact that his energy pool was so low.  He wanted to go out and hunt down monsters much more quickly than he was able to do, if for no other reason than he had nothing much else to occupy his time.  Perhaps, in the future, he would spend many days searching for dungeons, diving throughout the floors in search of treasures to have a reason to go out there, but for now it would be a wasted endeavor, as he lacked the skills to capitalize on such things.

Indeed, he would have to wait until his EXP caught up with his damage dealing, or else go in search of energy recovering food and armor.  But, from what he understood about the game system itself, he could not take more than one of a specific kind of energy booster every day or so, limiting the use of such things as a practical matter of energy gaining.  His pool would remain low until his level became higher; that was the long and short of it.  Perhaps one day, he would discover other means by which to improve the statistic, but for now it was what it was.

Brax's status window 'PING'ed at him, indicating his EN had recovered, so he took a quick look over the rocks to see if the mob had returned.  As of yet, the Wind Wasps had not respawned, forcing the heavily armored man to bide his time at another task.  He made his way into the field of flowers, in search of a material or two as he waited.  But, unfortunately for him, the garden was devoid of anything of use.  Maybe the next time he would search the outlying area, closer to the lake or the rocks for something suitable, but as he began to make his way there the Wasp mob began to materialize before his eyes.

They had caught the man unawares, forming around him in a flanking pattern.  'Well, damn,' Brax thought in his head, unpleased by the outcome.  He would have to remember not to be caught in the middle of the gardens again next time.  The Wind Wasps attacked hard, stabbing at the man's armor with their sharp stingers filled with toxic venom, but the only thing they could harm was his sense of satisfaction, not his virtual frame.  Lashing out with his axe, Brax slammed his weapon into the ground, a plan of action forming in his mind.  As the dust began to rise from his earthy assault, he again leapt up into the sky and hit one of the Wasps with his shoulder, allowing him to spin his axe around twice, once in either direction, catching every one of the enemies in his arch.  Landing hard, Brax looked up to see their pixels rise into the sky, evidence of his success at the attack.

Brax rested on his knee following the fight, breathing relatively hard from the exertion.  He logically knew that he could not keep up this pace, that he could not keep leaping into the air after the flying swarms.  After a while, his stamina would run out, and what would happen should the Wind Wasp Queen appear when he was gulping down air?  Making his way back to the rocky enclosure. he scanned the area yet again for both suitable mats and the Queen, though neither one made a showing in his eyesight.  His eyes closed for just a moment, so as to regain some semblance of his physical composure.

He lightly dozed off, his surroundings vanishing for a moment as he rested to regain his energy both in the game and his own physical reserves.  The place he had chosen to rest was protected well enough that without a thorough search, no one would find him.  And even then, his armor was strong enough that he could survive at least a few hits before dying, thus allowing the man to recover and engage or retreat from a battle if need be.  Part of Brax's mind drifted off to dreamland, just for a moment or two, while his body lay cocooned in the embrace of the rocks.

His dreams were...untroubled.  Though Brax doubted you could call what he did 'dreaming', as while he entered REM sleep his damaged brain did not seem to offer up images of desires or wishes, or even things that had happened during his day.  Instead, the amnesia patient simply floated aimlessly through a void space, black and empty, with only the sound of his deep breathing to echo in the pervading darkness.  That was how all of his dreaming went, a existential floating through time and space, no references to speak of to anchor his thoughts and body.

Brandon was able to achieve the rest he needed, despite the lack of true dreaming.  The doctors were slightly baffled by his case; the lack of true dreaming was normally a sign of the lack of REM resting induction, but when monitored Brandon did in fact achieve the necessary state to rest the mind as well as the body.  His condition had not degenerated to the point where he might be hallucinating, seeing things and hearing things that were not there, thus he was getting all the rest he required to function.  And yet, the man could not dream like a normal person.  Fascinating.

His status menu sent forth another 'PING' to remind the heavily armored man that his energy had recuperated, waking him from his nap.  Standing and stretching once to work out a kink or two, Brax strode out of the enclosure to hear a low droning sound coming from the garden: the Wind Wasps had returned.  Readying his axe for battle, his foot caught on a rock just shy of the outcropping, and he reached down to examine to offending stone.  Turned out, the stone had some value, and so he placed it in his inventory drops, turning his attention now to the fight to come.

The droning sound increased the closer he got, until finally as he cleared the rocks Brax saw them buzzing about, ready for battle.  This time, he knew that he would have to wait until the insects got closer to the ground, allowing him to attack them without enduring more athletic actions.  Coming to a decision, Brax began to walk/run into their midst, letting the sounds of his approach carry far and wide to draw the creatures into coming at him first, to get them in range of his assault skills.  The plan worked, as the angry mob swarmed down to his level, bobbing and weaving a path that ended in his arms.  A wan smile crossed his face as they drew closer, and Brax allowed them to sting his arms and chest before striking, activating his Trample Act and mowing their numbers down to size, leaving nothing behind but some pixels and a little loot.

Another glance over the gardens revealed that the Queen still had yet to appear, even after killing 12 of her followers.  Maddening would be the word to describe his thoughts, though since Brax could not in fact feel such a thing, he was simply...frustrated.  Coming into the quest he had known the time it took for the boss to spawn could possibly be higher than normal, higher than what others had experienced.  Some said the Queen came out after only one or two foes killed, whilst others told tales of farming for hours before even a hint of her majesty's presence made a showing.  RNG was an unfortunate mistress.

In any event, Brax was in need of another rest, to once again re-energize his EN to maximum potential.  It would not do to have no power with which to strike at the Queen, if and when she deigned to make her appearance known.  This time, instead of waiting behind the rocks, Brax chose to climb atop them, using the high vantage point to keep a more watchful gaze on the flowerbed.  That way, he could see exactly when the Queen or her Wasps rematerialized, thus he could assail them that much faster.  Thus, he could finish the quest up in a more timely fashion.

His perch from atop the rocks afforded the stoic stalwart an unobstructed view of a vast majority of western reaches of Floor Two.  Brax could see the lake stretching for several miles, going beyond his sight in the direction of the rising sun, though right now the blazing orb was high in the sky and shedding it's brilliant rays on the many players passing through the fields and forests.  He could see, off in the far distance, a small group of adventurers fending well against a large mob of oversized boars, flashing lights from one could only hope were successful Sword Arts the only indications he could ascertain from this far away.

Two things happened simultaneously while Brax stood watch from his stone seat: first, his window pinged again, the telling sound signaling his renewed energy, and second, a buzzing drone heralded the rebirth of the Wind Wasp swarm.  As he watched the center of the garden, the Wasps reappeared in a haze of light, ghostly shades of brilliant colors coalescing into solid, albeit virtual, bodies, and buzzing their intent to patrol the area for their missing Queen.  Brax leapt from high above to down below, his shoulder coming forward in response as he fell to the ground.  Barreling through the air, he landed atop the swarm in flight, swiping his axe in the final spasms of his Trample Act before slamming into the ground hard, stunning him for a time.  As he tried to shake off the dizzying feeling that swaddled his thoughts in cotton and gauze, the remains of the Wind Wasps fell about him like stars falling from the sky, and somewhere beyond his ability to comprehend, a louder buzzing was advancing on his position.

It would seem that for this particular quest, 16 was the magical number of Wasps needing to be slain in order to summon their field boss compatriot, the Wind Wasp Queen.  As his vision cleared somewhat, Brax looked up through the haze to observe a giant insect bearing down on the center of the garden, her intent a mystery to the addled armored stoic.  Reacting sluggishly, he just managed to stumble back to the rocky outcropping before the Queen touched down, her multi-faceted eyes roaming the flowers in search of the one who dared slay her children.

That incessant droning echoed loudly in Brax's ears, rattling inside his head and jumbling his thoughts even as he tried to recover his wits.  "Never again," said Brax aloud quietly, commenting on the actions he had taken to slay the last mob.  That would not be something he would try a second time, not unless absolutely necessary.  The ringing in his head was not worth the damage he had done to the swarm.  Checking his EN for a moment, Brax painfully thought that he needed to rest, to recover before confronting whatever it was that was making all that racket.

The Wind Wasp Queen busied herself with a patrol of the garden, desperately searching for the offending player that dared challenge her in her domain.  Who did this upstart think they were?  Royalty must be dealt with in a certain fashion, with honor and respect, not sneaky threats and wholesale slaughter of their enemies' underlings.  This was simply NOT how things were done.  The nerve of the rabble, to think they could challenge a Queen such as her, it was a preposterous notion!  Her will would not be denied; she was ruler absolute!  No mere peasant of an adventurer could stand in her presence, SHE WAS QUEEN!

Finally, Brax's head had cleared enough of the cobwebs from inside to allow him to challenge the field boss directly.  He stood up, shaking his head once to clear just a bit more from his noggin, and finishing up drew forth his Veteran's Axe to do battle.  Brax left the rocky enclosure and entered the garden field, standing toe to toe with the Wind Wasp Queen.  Her multi-faceted lenses focused all of their attention on his weighted frame, and moving like a bolt of lightning she struck, zooming in with a zig-zag pattern that defied his abilities to track her movements.  The stinger beneath stuck him hard, drawing forth a deep line of red pixels, but it was all for show; Brax looked at his health bar, and saw his armor held firm, defending against her powerful strike.  Taking advantage of the opening provided by her attack, he spun once in place, his axe cutting a deep red furrow across the lady's abdomen.  As he finished the first spin, Brax found his body continuing the rotations two more times, his Crimson Blood Sword Art activating for the first time.  Two more cuts joined the first, and after he had stopped spinning he found that his attack had done quite a large amount of damage.  'Well, how...interesting...'

Frozen in place after his attack, Brax was unable to pursue the Queen as she pulled away, all the better to again stab at the disgusting peasant that he appeared to her royal senses as.  Barreling forward, her speed again like lightning, Brax found it difficult to believe the A.I. would believe a second attack of the same nature would work.  He managed to anticipate the blow, shifting his weapon to block the attack as it tried to tear into him once more.  Using the momentum from the failed assault, Brax spun once more in a Crimson Blood attack, and three revolutions later the Wind Wasp Queen was fritzing and frozen in the air, carved to pieces and exploding in a glittering shard showers on the flower garden's petals.  A large see-through sign appeared in mid-air filled with the capitalized letters saying 'QUEST COMPLETE!"  Brax had finished the arduous task of defeating a field boss, his first.  The loot from the battle appeared in another window, his conquering rewards.  'A potion and some EXP, hmm?' he mused.  'Very well.  Now, were to next?'  Brax was not about to rest on his laurels: he still had tasks in need of accomplishment.  He turned back to town, for rest and another look at the board for his next quest.
