As Brax's Battle-Axe cleanly cut through the hardened ice that made up the elementals he was currently demolishing, he thought back to the reason why he now found himself roaming a cave in the depths of Floor Four, the frosty snow filled land.  Having completed his first major quest in the gardens of Floor Two, he had immediately taken the next one in the chain, a quest that involved hunting down a giant ice elemental known as Avalanche.  Unfortunately, much like the Wind Wasp Queen, Avalanche would not spawn until a certain number of Ice Elementals had been slaughtered, thus Brax was hunkered down in a cave, somewhere in the mountains of Floor Four, carving ice as if he were a caterer at a swanky dinner party, or a sculptor whose medium was the cold and the clear.  His Trample Act made quick work of the current batch of elementals, though he had been here for hours slicing and dicing his way through the cave with little to show but a red and runny nose.  The loot his present mob dropped was little comfort to the frozen stoic, and his frustration had built somewhat high from the amount of time he had already spent out here.

The man attempted to busy himself looking about for any materials of note, managing to find a frozen piece of the elementals amongst the rubble of their remains, what hadn't vanished in the pixelated mist of their deaths.  In addition, Brax had been forced to build a small shelter, hidden away from the field of battle, where he had made a fire in the ice and snow to keep himself from freezing anymore than he already was.  Not that the cold was a bother to him; very little was, but rather his physical frame required at least a bit of heat to prevent the game from freezing his motions, limiting his combat capabilities.

HIs cold fingers attempted to warm up from his makeshift fire, the virtual flames low in the sub-zero temperatures.  Brax saw more gems of materials deep within the clear ice beneath him, but would not go in search of them, as it might require him to leave the miniscule heat that the fire was emitting; even that small amount, though, was able to keep his body from completely icing over.  He cursed several times in succession; what was up with the RNG?  Why would Kayaba's engineers design a quest that waited so long to spawn a boss level creature?

Frustrating, that was what it was.  Having spent so many hours slaying ice elementals 4 by 4, Brax was tired, cold and hungry.  He had used up the last of his rations an hour or so ago, and was now at the end of his water reserves.  Logically, that meant that unless the next few waves produced Avalanche, he would be forced to return to Snowfrost and try again tomorrow, which was not a situation devoutly to be wished.  His normally stoic countenance was replaced by raised eyebrows and an almost livid boiling of his blood, his physical body's attempt to keep him warm.

Brax was able to channel much of that energy into his attacks.  The actions of raising and lowering his weapon pumped the cold and sluggish blood through his veins, heating him up if only for a moment as he did battle fiercely.  This was never more seen than when a new group of Ice Elementals began to form from the surrounding ice and snow, taking shape slowly and purposefully.  Before they could even dream of coalescing, Brax dove straight into their midst, his shoulder barrage leading the way and his axe swinging out wildly, carving new sculptures out of their frozen bodies.  As the shapes took on new forms under his furious assault, they de-pixelated and vanished, the cold northern winds blowing the crystal showers far away and into the darkness above.

Once again, Brax was left alone, his only companion the icy wind noisily bellowing it's cold song across the entirety of the floor.  His boots crunched in the icy and snow, leaving deep footprints as he made his way back to the low burning fire for heat and warmth.  Soon, he might have to move on to another cave, just to get his legs moving and his heart pumping so as to combat his sluggishly moving virtual blood.  The area where Avalanche would spawn was wide enough that he could go a few dozen feet in any direction and still find his prize.

Deciding to move, Brax gathered up his meager belongings that had strewn about the area surrounding the fire and, after putting them in his inventory, began walking further east, in a circle around the cave that fell north of Snowfrost, the cave that rumors stated held the Elemental Avalanche.  HIs metal boots stepped purposefully, the movements increasing the more he walked as his internal temperature began to rise.  His eyes roam about the tundra, keen vision in search of any materials, but finding none of note.

It was relatively slow goings for him, as he worked off the extreme cold that threatened to stop his metal frame in it's tracks.  The armor Brax wore just barely kept his physical heat from bleeding out into the wind, kept the chill from completely invading his bones.  It rang in the chilling breeze, the icy breath from high above singing a song of desperation and despair across the heavy metal, persisting in his brain like a song you just can't get rid of, not that Brax was unaware of how a thought could drive one mad when contemplated long enough.

His reverie was broken only by the emergence of another mob of Ice Elemental, forming up from the ground like cold frozen specters of death.  Brax and his armor were unfortunately weighed down by the cold and his exhaustion, thus making him unmoving prey for the dastardly elementals and their icy fists.  They rained blows on his sluggish form, hammering him in his metal shell, but Brax would not be cowed even as he stood still and endured the attacks.  Instead, he lashed out with his slow moving shoulderguard, connecting with the closest one he could reach.  At that, his body though cold and slow, moved effortlessly through his Trample Act, and cut the offending creatures down to size.  Trudging through the crystal rain that fell following their demise, Brax continued his path around the cave, waiting for the boss to come forth.

The trudging was still slow goings, his inexorable footsteps leaving deep furrows in the snow.  The storm began to lessen the more Brax walked, though, and the result was quite beautiful, as the clouds began parting to reveal a starry night-time sky.  The cold wind still blew, but it was more of a lover's gentle touch rather than the biting teeth of a northern beast.  It did not keep Brax warm, but it certainly did not add to the chill he felt.

Feeling the need to warm up again, Brax found a suitable enclosure to start another fire on the far side of the cave entrance he had been circling around.  Finding materials to burn was, of course, a chore, but with a bit of luck from the RNG he was able to find some decent pieces to begin with, and with a little more luck struck up a fire.  The warmth pervaded his bones, and thankfully began to heat up his despicably cold armor, such that it would help maintain his inner heat levels.  Thankful for the blaze, Brax rubbed his hands together quickly and almost forgot about the amount of time he had already spent in this icy hellhole, in search of the damnable field boss.

He did not want to think about it, as the considerations would no doubt begin to frustrate his senses yet again.  As previously stated, he had spent many hours out here already, with no end in sight.  "What must I do, Kayaba!?!?!?!?" he yelled out into the sky, his frustration again pouring out over his normally stoic veneer.  Collecting himself yet again, Brax managed to calm his attitude sufficiently so as to not expend too much energy: all that would accomplish is losing more heat, heat that he could not afford to waste, should he need to spend more time out here.

Another rumbling of the ice around him told the story of another mob of Ice Elementals preparing to rise.  Brax allowed his large amount of frustration to wash over him anew, empowering his axe with the force of his discontent.  His axe pulsed quickly in response, eager to reap whatever flowed through the veins of the animated ice, as his armor responded in kind to protect him from any mistakes he might make in a state such as this.  Not that Brax would need the help, as he began moving somewhat swiftly towards where the elementals were coming together, and leading with his shoulderguards he battered the still forming ice with a Trample Act, cutting them down before they even had a chance to retaliate.  The force behind the beasts vanished, causing the ice to fall noisily to the ground in defeat.

As Brax stood there, breathing hard from the effort, he thought he heard something from deep within the cave.  A moving of...something, from the bowels of the earth beneath his feet.  'Could it be,' he thought to himself, 'could the field boss finally be forming?'  A small spark of...something echoed in his chest, something he did not immediately recognize as it had been quite a long time since he had felt it; indeed, several weeks had passed since last he had sensed the sensation beating in his heart.  It was...pride, that offshoot of his satisfaction, the pride of a task finally accomplished.

Brax would not act prematurely, though.  He would need to confirm that Avalanche had indeed spawned properly.  For all he knew, it was simply another group of regular elementals respawning deeper in the ground to avoid being slaughtered before attacking their enemy.  He would have to exercise a decent amount of caution and focus.  Brax was...unsure as to how strong the field boss truly was, though the quest board had been relatively specific as to the creature's dimensions.

Brax strode back to the cave's main entrance, a jagged cut in the face of the large and imposing mountain of ice.  As he neared closer to the opening, he could swear he heard a loud huffing of breath from deep within, and a scraping sound of ice on ice.  Just as his frame turned the corner and his eyes beheld the ragged crevasse, a loud roar came forth from inside the mountain, and an explosion of snow and ice blew forth from the opening, heralding the emergence of Avalanche, the Elemental.

Brax was momentarily stunned by the force of the creature's coming, his sluggish body exhausted by the hours he had spent summoning the Elemental.  Thus, he was unable to avoid an frozen block of ice brought forth from inside the beast thrown in his direction.  The projectile hit him square on, his Veteran's Breastplate the only saving grace he possessed.  It's powerful protective forgings kept the damage from the attack minimal at best.  Shaking of his tired countenance, Brax charged the creature and built up speed, the better to avoid any another moves the creature would try in the near future.  Having upgraded his Sword Arts recently, Brax summoned from his repertoire a new single target move, his Crescent Avalanche.  Seven attacks came forth from the man's Battle-Axe, a mix of thrusts, jabs and slashes from his weapon to seriously injure the power Elemental.  Avalanche roared it's displeasure at the assault, howling loudly and readying for another move.

Avalanche 37/100

Brax was unfortunately 'frozen' in place following his new Sword Art, the game having to register a delay after such a powerful move.  In those moments while he waited to regain motion, Avalanche decided to reward his attack with another of it's own.  Bringing to bear both of it's arms, the dreaded field boss brought both appendages above it's head and sent them crashing down atop Brax's stiff body, slamming it to the ground hard.  Thankfully, two things happened almost simultaneously: first, his armor absorbed the bulk of the attack, the vibrations silenced by his well crafted chest-piece; second, his body was able to once again move, the delay period following his Sword Art removed.  And so it was, that Brax was able to rise to his feet and attack anew the dread creature that he had summoned.  Unfortunately for him, the beast was a little faster than it looked, and as he brought his axe to bear against one of it's legs, intent on ending the battle quickly with another Crescent Avalanche, it moved across the ice like it was born there, which he supposed it had been, effortlessly avoiding his counter-attack.

Avalanche 37/100

Avalanche grinned widely, a disturbing sight on the Ice Elemental's giant face.  It saw the offending player that attempted to assault it as nothing more than a nuisance, a bug to be crushed beneath it's icy heel.  The boss had been waiting forever, having been summoned many hours ago by the adventurer, but choosing to toy with him first, by not revealing it's presence until many hours later.  It had a...certain amount of intelligence for a field boss, courtesy of the designers on Kayaba's team of computer engineers.  This A.I. intelligence allowed the Elemental to be a formidable foe to high and low levels alike, forcing them to alter their plans to account for it's power.  Sliding across the frozen floor of the cave and it's surrounding area, Avalanche dodged yet another attack from the player's giant Battle-Axe, getting behind him and throwing several ice blocks from deep within it's body to mow down the intruder.  The man was struck, but what angered the boss the most was that despite all the hit it gave, the armored individual was acting as if the attacks were simply drops of rain, doing little to no damage at all.  It was frustrating, and the beast bellowed out it's frustrations loudly.

Avalanche -19/100 DEAD [8 x 7 Crescent Avalanche] = 56 DMG

As Brax recovered from the last icy attack thrown by the field boss, he felt the room shake in response to the bellowing of Avalanche, as did his metal armor.  The sound reverberated throughout the area, the ice conducting the noise and increasing the echo to titanic levels.  An angry burst of cacophonous noise, Brax couldn't begin to speculate as to the nature of the outcry.  Perhaps it was upset that he was so difficult to kill.  Fortunately for Brax, he would not have to speculate on the issue for long;  the yelling had broken off pieces of the mountain above, sending stalactites of ice falling from the sky, landing squarely atop the creature's brow.  They provided enough of a distraction for Brax to make his move, activating his Crescent Avalanche to end the battle now, before it had a chance to recover.  His combination attack managed to strike home and hard, a final thrust of his axe deep into the heart of Avalanche.  With a final howling cry, the dreaded Elemental sagged a bit before exploding outward violently, spreading it's crystalline particles about the area in abundance.

As Brax hit his knees in the icy ground, he almost keeled over from the exhaustion that coursed through his veins.  The battle won, he saw the 'QUEST COMPLETE!" sign appear in the air above the fallen Avalanche, signaling his finished work.  'Finally,' he muttered to himself, 'time to head back, find an inn, and nap...for a day.'  Brax allowed his sense of frustration to wash away, leaving only a tired feeling of pride well up inside, unfortunate given that he could no adequately enjoy it.  Getting up off his knees, he took one last look around the battlefield and turned back to Snowfrost, where hopefully he could find rest and warmth in ample supply.  It was...a necessity.
