[SP-F2] A Time To Train - Working Things Out <<Breaking the Unbreakable>> - COMPLETE!

The climb was arduous, but the rewards for the climb were worth the effort.  Brax had climbed up a mountain before, on this very same floor, Floor Two, but had done so from the inside, not the out.  The Quest Board told of a dojo, manned by an weird old man, who could award a person with a skill, should they survive the trip up.  There was also mention of a trial of some sort, once the individual arrived, but the details were...hazy, at best.  Some said you had to fight your inner hard-headedness, while others spoke of giant cats and whiskers on golems.  'The thinning air must play havoc on the senses,' Brax thought to himself as he scaled the rock face.  His hands ever searching, Brax kept feeling his way up, squeezing the stones from time to time to check if one might be a suitable material for crafting purposes.  But, none were particularly good.  Bearing down, he continued the climb, on the lookout for both materials and monsters, for both would provide an engaging way to pass the time, to make the road less...tedious.

Breaking the unbreakable, <<Martial Arts>> Extra skill
This quest is only available on the 2nd floor.

To start the quest, the player must first find the quest NPC that has taken residence in a hut near the summit of an exceptionally high mountain at the southern edge of the 2nd Floor. If the player accepts the quest, the NPC takes the player outside to a 2 meter-high rock with a diameter of about 1.5 meters and almost as tough as an Immortal Object. There, the NPC reveals that the player must split the rock into two using only their fists and then proceeds to paint whiskers with quick-drying paint on the player’s face, claiming that the whiskers cannot be removed until the rock is split. If the player does manage to split the rock, they are rewarded with the Extra Skill.

Good luck Players!

As he cleared the first leg of the journey, Brax found himself on a ledge that opened into a mountain pass winding upwards through the imposing rocks.  A loud bleating sound echoed in the near distance, followed by the arrival of several Mountain Goats who called this floor home.  Careening wildly through the stony surroundings, they charged at Brax seemingly unknowing of the power he possessed.  He taught them the lesson readily, charging forwards himself and hitting the first one hard with his Crescent Avalanche Sword Art, eliminating the beast with ease.  As he spun through the attack, his motions prevented the remaining animals from landing a solid hit in response, allowing Brax to wait out the Sword Art delay with nary a scratch.  Afterwards, with his feet firmly planted, his eyes gleamed as he contemplated his next move.

The goats who remained brayed and bleated their dismay at the death of their compatriot, turning their murderous gaze upon the responsible player.  Brax was unmoved by their discordant cries, though, and readied his weapon for a final death blow, in order to advance up the pass to his goal: the dojo at the summit of the mountain.  Onwards they came, intent clear in their gaze: the death and destruction of Brax, the stalwart stoic as he had taken to calling himself.  Lowering his shoulderguard to the ground, he burst forth with energy and barraged the primary goat with a well aimed tackle, initiating his Trample Act and mowing down the mob handily.  As their multicolored display of pixels rose into the thinning air surrounding the mountain, he sheathed his weapon and turned back to follow the path upwards.

The path wove through the rocks with many twists and turns, and Brax almost lost his footing in several places.  He calculated the odds that the skill atop the summit would be worth the arduous journey, and found them slightly favorable in his direction.  Though, even as he contemplated the situation, he thought about when he would ever use the skill he was searching for, which the Quest Board said was a form of Martial Arts.  'I do not fight with my hands,' he reasoned in his head, 'for my weapon requires them both.  I suppose a challenge could arise, in which the skill would be needed, but even so, one task amidst many does not calculate well.'

The air became thinner, the mist was becoming thicker, and the path more treacherous as he climbed higher and higher.  Brax could hear the wind moaning as it blew over the landscape, and was mildly intrigued that the breeze did not take the misty air with it.  'Game design, most likely,' he thought, giving the idea no more attention.  As he walked, the man remembered that he had a few Carrot Tabs he had gotten from a mob drop that would improve his accuracy, both in battle and outside it.  Reaching into his inventory window, he drew forth one of them an consumed it quickly, as he felt something nearby that troubled his senses.

Brax's eyes began adjusting to the swirling mists surrounding him; though the thick and cloudy air still presented a challenge beyond a few dozen feet around his body, in that limited space he was able to observe everything clearly.  The rocks beneath his soles, which unfortunately held nothing of intrinsic value; the myriad of plants growing upon the stony ground, also of no immediately noticeable quality; and, at the extreme edge of his food-enhanced vision, a dusky shadow of a creature, several feet tall and with big brawny arms, eyes gleaming sinisterly in the haze.

Stone Golem (Painted with a Cat Face) -1/44 DEAD [8 x 7 Crescent Avalanche - 11 MIT] = 45 DMG

As the monster cleared the mist, Brax could see it clearly with his enhanced sense of sight: it was a golem of epic proportions, stone faced and stone skinned, matching the area in tone and texture.  Though, it's face was...less intimidating.  Someone had apparently drawn a portrait of a cat on the rock, circling the creature's eyes and mouth with a feline countenance, complete with whiskers.  The beast would have been terrifying, if not for the face paint.  Not for Brax, of course, but perhaps for others.  'This...explains a few things...but raises other rather...interesting questions,' Brax mused to himself, intrigued by the oddness of the circumstances.  Putting aside his questions, he readied his axe to challenge the foe.

The golem charged at him, arms raised high above it's head to bash into the armored man.  Brax avoided the attack, but just barely, rolling out of the way at the last minute.  He wished he had empowered himself with the Epitaph's energy, but unfortunately he required other enhancements for this particular trip, and thus left the piece in his inventory.  As he dove out of the way, Brax twisted his body to slice at the creature, activating his counterattack with the Sword Art Crescent Avalanche, and seven moves later watched as the golem dissolved into pixels.  Upon it's demise, the mists began to part and revealed the summit he had been searching for.

Giant Stone 46/50 [1 + 3 DMG]

As Brax ventured on, in the near distance he could see a hut surrounded by an outdoor training facility of sorts, replete with amenities necessary for martial combat.  An old man exited the hut, walking over to him and saying "Welcome, brave adventurer, to my dojo!  You have proven yourself worthy, worthy to learn the Martial Arts.  But, before you can be taught, you must pass a final test."  Brax was slightly confused, and voiced his concerns: "But, were not the tests of the mountain and the golem enough?  I...would have thought those would have proven my...capabilities in combat, my worth...for your skill."  "No, young one, those were merely barriers, placed in order to prevent those who would not be dedicated to the craft, to the spirit, of what I offer.  By making your way here, by passing the gauntlet, you have proven that you are worth the final test to achieve greatness.  Will you accept?"  As he had come all this way, Brax could not refuse, though he was truly frustrated that his journey was not yet over.  "It would seem...I do not have a choice, venerable one.  I...accept your challenge.  What must I do?"  "Excellent!  Your test is this," he said, reaching into his robes and bringing out a paint brush, which he began applying to Brax's face.  "You must break that rock," pointing over his shoulder to a large stone standing several feet high, just over a foot taller than he, "while wearing these whiskers upon your face."  The old man finished his job, and now Brax sported a black pair of whiskers, 3 on each side, on his face.  "Why," he asked, "do I need the whiskers?"  "Do Not Question The Master, Young One!" the old man yelled.  "Now, go and break the rock, using ONLY your fists.  Once that is done, you will understand."  With that, the man returned to the tent, presumably to watch the trial.

If Brax could feel foolish, the whiskers would be embarrassing to say the least.  But, as he was in need of the experience, he could not refuse even the most ridiculous of tasks.  As such, he strode up to the large stone, his weapon unequipped and only his charm and gauntlets to aid his skills.  Throwing a first punch, as a test, he felt the stone rumble beneath the blow and saw a slight dent, but otherwise the rock remained unchanged.

Giant Rock 46/50

The Giant Rock was an impressive piece of stone, standing just taller than himself and quite a bit wider.  A stationary enemy, much like the Nepents from the floor below, it offered little more than a challenge that Brax had needed to accept to move forwards.  Gearing up for another assault, he launched yet another punch at the stone surface, aiming for the dent he had made previously, but as his armored fist connected he felt something different about the blow.  His concentration off, he had failed to put his full weight behind the attack, and thus caused little damage to anything but his pride.

Frustration etched into his brow, forcing the stoic to center his thoughts.  Brax drew on various calming exercises from his sessions at Berringer's, breathing deeply and exhaling forcefully to excise his frustrations.  Not that very much could ruffle his calm, no, it was that like the discomfort he often felt during the share groups he had been forced to participate in, Brax, or rather Brandon, had to focus, keep his attention on the task before him and ignore distraction.  His concentration clear, he aimed another decent blow at the stone, putting another dent into the challenging rocky face.

Striking the rock another time, delivering punch after punch with his enhanced gauntlets, Brax's mind was given time to wander.  His thoughts turned to both his current quest and his future journeys, in addition to those who he would join up with along the way.  Coddexx had...proven himself useful, a decent enough ally to adventure with.  In addition, rather soon he would be in need of a guild, a group to help him along the path.  They would be...necessary for advancement, as Brax was soon to discover that he could not go it alone.  The myriad of attacks was slowly wearing down the stone, leaving minute cracks growing from the dents appearing across it's face.

His other weapon, his Battle-Axe, would soon be in need of mastering as well.  The thought of enhancing his strength with his particular weapon of choice had the emotionless man almost...eager...though he interpreted the sensation as more an offshoot of his satisfaction at completing a monumental task, such that the grandmastering of a skill would be.  The rock he was currently assaulting, leaving more gravel and dusty to fly into the thin mountain air all around them both, gave him a few ideas as to how he would train in order to complete the endeavor.
