After finishing up his scouting trip, Brax was at the bar on the first floor of the inn he was staying at currently.  Sipping at his drink, he felt...prepared...to start questing once more.  And his location was eminently perfect for it, as two quests stood out at him that required rooting around the volcanic regions of Floor Nine: a bandit camp raid, and a field boss hidden in a cavern.  Not feeling quite up to hunting down a boss at the moment, Brax decided the Bandit Camp was...more in line, at least until he had properly girded himself with some new items he was waiting on from an artisan.  Finishing the last of his drink, the Stalwart Stoic made his way from the inn to the quest giver's location in the center of Vulcan.  After accepting the job, he made his way out of the city to the Bandit Camp marker on his map, which was nestled in a mountain well known for it's good ore deposits.  That explained the necessity of a good clearing out every now and then of the bandits, so other lower levels might have a decent chance at finding things to trade with.

Ultimate, Brax did not care for the needs of others, not unless he logically could see some benefits to himself.  Not selfishness, but rather practicality drove his actions: if there was nothing to gain, what was the point of helping?  Thus were his thoughts as he left Vulcan Village to travel the desolate landscape towards his goal: the Bandit Camp, and the EXP he could obtain from the quest.  Along the way, he encountered a mob of Fire Wolves, much like on his previous hunting trip, but as he was hunting bandits Brax dealt with them quickly.  Lengthening his stride and picking up speed, he charged into their midst before giving them a moment to react with his axe held high to release an Explode Catapult.  Swiping twice through their ranks, he dropped his axe hard to the ground and unleashed the remaining energy of his Sword Art in a shockwave that ripped through the beasts and left behind only loot to be collected.

The blackened earth held little to garner his attention, no life save the heated beasts that dominated the floor.  Just like before, very little in the way of plant life grew in the dark rocky ground, desolation as far as the eye could see.  Brax was...more than a little surprised that the floor had as many people as it did, evidenced by the quest he was currently on, but then again, with all the heat and pressure both above and below the surface he could see the area being quite abundant in precious stones and heavy metals.

Such things would be well worth grinding over, well worth sitting a team of bandits on top of a figurative and possibly literal gold mine to control the means of production.  Plus, the lack of plant life meant just about every creature you met in the area would be hungry and hostile, leading to a worthwhile hunting trip, should one be strong enough to engage in it.  Plus, the heat kept away most of the more...weak willed individuals, as they could not stand the fire, thus getting out of the kitchen, to turn a phrase.

These thoughts and more rattled in Brax's head as he continued his trek.  For his trips to be more successful, he would need to begin focusing on the next leg of his leveling process, once again considering his options as to where he should direct his skills.  He was again reminded of a singular fact: out of every person he had run into, none had focused solely on the Search and Detect skill.  As far as he knew, there were no Grandmasters of the ability.  Brax might in fact be the first to do so, but being so far behind several others, he was unsure whether he could get there in time.  It was a race to the top, so to speak, but a goal nonetheless that could be achievable.

His distracted journey led further on, right smack dab into another pack of Fire Wolves.  The surprise of the encounter allowed the mob to hit Brax before he could react, with fiery tackles knocking the heavily armored man onto his butt.  His ability to survive was put to the test as they clawed at his digital framework, trying to cook him with flames and cut him up into bite sized chunks with their claws.  Thankfully, Brax recovered enough to shove the rabid dogs off of himself, rolling over and setting his axe low to activate his Explode Catapult.  A brilliant flash of light emanated from his weapon, shifting his body with the Assist System's help to sweep through the group twice, right to left and then left to right, before finishing up with his now-patented overhead slam, and as the shockwave tore the wolves apart Brax did not even watch as he walked away, knowing that the attack had done it's job even before they dipixelated.

Further on, Brax noticed in the far distance both a medium sized mountain that according to his map marker held the bandit camp, and before it, a dead forest of blackened wood.  The oppressive heat from the floor had proved too much for the vegetation, and all that remained were ashen husks of twisted bark and dead citrus, the desiccated leavings of a once vibrant trees.  It would have been...a most disturbing sight, one to tug at the heartstrings and inspire both contemplation and pity at the scene, though all the stoic felt was...disappointment at the lack of suitable supplies for bartering purposes.

Brax had found himself vacillating recently between his...more logical demeanor, and an introspective one since...having achieved his highest level of skill in his avatar's weapon.  He wondered if it was a byproduct of the training he had gone through, that intense meditative session at the Waterfall of the Sage, where he had faced conjured demons from his own psyche by some kind of psychological program.  It was...an odd experience, one that still left him rather disturbed when he thought back upon it.

His logical persona always won, due to the alexithymia he suffered from, but Brax knew that eventually he would have to integrate his emotions.  He would have to focus on actually attempting to feel them instead of running from them when they appeared, which is what he had almost done following his rock breaking quest.  Only through the help of the disembodied 'voice' had he been able to...relegate them to the corners of his mind, pushing the experience down for at least the time being so as to focus on another task, i.e. staying alive long enough to defend himself.

And once he was sufficiently capable of facing those...unruly emotions...Brax would return to the Waterfall and the 'voice', where he would master himself much as he mastered his Battle-Axe.  Those mastered skills he brought to bear against the monsters he found in the forest, though they were not monsters but NPCs, in the form of a bandit scouting party.  It had been some time since that castle on Floor Two where he had found the quick spawning bandit point, and those men had nothing on the ones arrayed before him now.  Their leader, similar in build to the Captains he had faced before, was much stronger indeed, easily a match for many of the mobs he had dealt with on this trip.  Tall and well toned, the Captain led a group of Scouts that could readily past for Lieutenants on lower floors, brandishing broadswords that complemented their leader's spear and shield.  Decked out in dark leather armor probably harvested from a hellhound native to the area, they shouted in displeasure and charged at Brax with weapons held high.  Using his axe to parry the blows, no harm came to the heavily armored man as he dealt with them quickly, activating his Explode Catapult as he blocked the last attack.  Three blows from his axe later, and the mutilated bodies of the NPCs shook with the force from his weapon's shockwave before vanishing.  'I must be close, to have run into a scouting team.'  Shaking his head in agreement with his thoughts, Brax trekked deeper into the trees in the direction of the camp.

The scouting team had left a pretty obvious trail behind them, obvious enough for even the most amateur of trackers to follow, and Brax followed it to the letter.  It was only logical, given that he did not know the terrain and there could be...unforeseen surprises...waiting around every turn.  The bandits would expect a person to come at them from the front, swords waving and voices yelling as they charged the camp, and would be quite well prepared.

That preparation would force someone to run into multiple guards before reaching the heart of the camp, patrols that were specifically on the lookout for incoming parties.  It took a more...finessed approach to track the patrols themselves, follow in their footsteps, and avoid most battles entirely.  Not that Brax would have been incapable of fighting them off; it was simply that he did not wish to overly expend himself on such a task.  A waste of energy, and so forth.

Tracking and noting the bandit's guard positions was simple enough, and even finding the patterns in their movements was an easy endeavor.  What was not so easy was the ability to sneak by them in heavier gear.  It made the usually untroubled man begin to wish that he had taken a more...lightly armored path as far as his gear was concerned, but Brax shook off the idea as folly.  He only applied stealth when absolutely necessary, or when it was a more prudent action.  In the fields, he needed the solidarity that heavy plate afforded, and would have to make do with his choice.

LD 3 (used to sneak up on a patrol of bandits, their search roll)

Brax began to approach a group of Bandit Scouts that were sans a leader, at least one of Captain level, and crawled across the ground in order to surprise attack them.  He crept closer and closer as they passed him by, failing to detect his presence despite the armor he wore.  Controlling his breathing so as to not draw attention, he stood up and unsheathed his axe silently, readying a Sword Art to take the mob out quickly before they could move on.

Unfortunately, Brax could not use a more stealthy attack, due to the need of the power of his heavier ones, but still he managed to unleash a mostly quiet Explode Catapult into the unsuspecting mob of Bandits.  Using the first two swipes he cut the rear two guards in half, watching as their bodies dissolved into pixels.  As the front two turned to try and react to his presence, Brax brought the heavy axe down on the left one's head, using the frame of the NPC to vibrate the resulting shockwave outwards into the air instead of the ground.  The aerial vibrations tore into the other guard and shook it violently apart, causing both to explode like bombs into pixelated showers that covered Brax and the area in a light storm before dissipating.  Checking to see if he had been heard, and finding no alarms going off nearby, he sheathed his axe once more and headed in the direction of the camp itself at the center of the patrols.

The forest gave way to the base of the mountain in which the camp he was looking for was.  They had nestled into the stone and seemingly built a fortress not unlike the city of Nimbus on Floor Seven, from what the quest giver had said, and were protecting the only entrances to a veritable gold mine of materials that could be harvested for much profit.  The fortress was not impenetrable, though, but had only a single entrance that housed the bosses of this particular crew.  For while the others patrolled the outskirts, the leaders sat on their riches like kings.

But Brax would not allow them to rest any longer.  He was in need of the EXP from the quest, and so with axe held at the ready dove into the maze of tunnels that meandered into the heart of the hopefully dormant volcanic mass before him.  At times the stalwart stoic lost his way, his eyes taking time to grow accustomed to the darkness of the cave network, but after an hour or so he found what he had been searching for: the stone camp wherein the Bandit Bosses lay.

The walls were carved from the igneous stone formations that had grown and strengthened from the heat and pressure within the mountain, and the bandit's sigil was marked on flags hanging from atop the protective stone.  A single gate stood in opposition to any intruders, the only entrance along the unbroken defenses of the wall.  It was made of black iron and obsidian, gleaming dully from the torches that burned along the walkway, and it stood open as if to say 'We are not afraid.'  Giving a wan smile in response, as he was there to put the idea to the test, Brax strode into the camp itself and came face to face with the Bandit Boss mob, four minor field bosses that stood ready for battle themselves, as if they had expected him to appear.

Each was colored differently, with armor fashioned of both metal and leather.  Sporting colors of blue, black, red and green, they also possessed differently styled weapons, among them a giant greatsword, a curved sword, a two handed axe and a black mace.  The Bosses had grizzled faces, probably designed by the Cardinal to appear imposing and vicious, though due to Brax's unique condition he experienced none of the emotions they sought to inspire.  Instead, he charged forward to prevent them from making the first move.  With shoulder down low he tackled the black leathered Boss who bore the dark mace, and upon connecting with the NPC his body shifted into his Trample Act, cutting down and blowing away the calm and collected Bandits.  The move had not been strong enough to kill them, but was enough to separate the group so as to make them easier to deal with.  Yelling their displeasure, they attempted to strike back but were too late to take advantage of his frozen aftermotion status from the Sword Art.  Brax managed to deflect every attack from their blades, turning aside powerful strikes like a jacket deflects the wind.

As he parried the blows that came fast and furious from the angered Bandits, Brax began to position himself to apply another Trample Act, but could not get enough distance between him and the mob in order to build up the steam necessary.  Finally, he found the opportunity he was waiting for, as the blue and red heavily armored Bosses attempted a tag team attack, one battle axe sweeping low whilst the other's greatsword swung high, trying to force Brax to take damage from at least one of them.  He leapt up, avoiding the axe and putting himself in the pathway of the sword, with the Boss wielding it grinning at the mistake.  But Brax had raised his weapon as he jumped, putting the shaft of his axe between himself and the blade, and used the energy from the swing to push him out of range of everyone.  Rolling to recover from the push, he countered the momentum with a push off of his own, his metal clad boots launching him towards the blue armored boss with his shoulderguard again leading the way.  The contact again activated his Trample Act, and Brax caught every Boss in the sweeping attacks that followed.  Bisecting the mob in it's entirety, Brax stood from his attack position to watch the Bandit's crystalline shower pour over him in victory.

As the shower vanished, a sign appeared in the air reading 'Quest Completed!', signaling the end of his endeavor.  Putting his weapon to rest, Brax saw a stone gate behind the Bandit's positions open suddenly, and from it poured a large amount of col.  Supposing that the col was a part of his rewards, he walked over to it and was signaled by another window popping up, asking whether or not he would accept the money.  Clicking the green X in acceptance, Brax watched as the col vanished and he was left in an empty fortress.  His quest done, he made his way outside to return to Vulcan for rest.  'Now, to rest up, for I imagine...Cerberus is next,' thought the heavily armored man as he left the area behind.
