[Shop-F4] Mortar&Pestle [Rank 1 Alchemist]

Recommended Posts

On the outskirts of town there was a small stone workshop on top of a small hill. A single light shone in the back window, showing that it had some inhabitant when it otherwise looks deserted. The snow fell gracefully, the wind blew cool. You approach the workshop and see it has no outstanding sign, no bedazzling banner. It has a small plaque above the door. A plaque with a mortar and pestle, the namesake of the place. You enter, and whether you knock or not, the door swings open with a creak. The first thing you notice is the cold. There is no warm fireplace, no insulation. Just the cold. You now stand in a small space, just big enough to be glorified as a room of any sort. It is maybe ten paces wide and ten paces long, the roof low overhead. The room has nothing in it but a single dark oak door. There are no counters with a friendly face behind it. There is a single shelf next to the door with a singe potion on it. The door opens and a grim faced young man steps out, wiping his hands on an apron. You catch a glimpse of the room behind him, a single lantern lighting the space filled with a small workshop and its entailing supplies. He is apparently the owner of the shop, and he stands there with a patronizing stare, the corners of his mouth tugged down into a slight grimace. He waits for what you have to say.

Place your order.

Crafting Attempt 1:

Spoiler

Darius stood in the small workshop in the back room. Each room was identical in structure, but his had tools and supplies in it while the other stood barren. And even then, to say tools and supplies was a joke. He had a handful of items he could dabble with and the most basic equipment he could get. He was a beginner after all. That would not deter him though. Gathering what he needed he set it out on the small counter space he was granted. He took a mushroom cap and ground it to a dust, the mushroom having been dried. With that dust, he added some water to make a paste, and then to that paste he added a drop of lightbug thorax liquid, the iridescent glow being traced through the concoction. He took a gob of the paste, sprinkled it with a ground flower petal, then dropped it into a flask on a burner. He waited to see how the potion would turn out.

[After Roll Reaction:] Darius waited patiently, staring deep into the bubbling concoction. Grueling minutes passed and it changed color. A faint hope blossomed, only to be such down as the concoction started to smoke. The smoke was acrid, horrid, and choking. So much so that Darius had to open a window and dump the potion out. It was a failure...

Crafting Attempt 2:

With the acrid smell from his last concoction still lingering, Darius' resolve did not lessen. If the ingredients did not work in that combination before, he would try something else. Going through what little he had left, Darius gathered his selection: a glowing mushroom, a fine sap, and a vial of pollen. Taking the stalk of the glowing mushroom this time, he ground it up into a dust with his mortar and pestle. After doing such, he spread some of the pollen into the dust and then gathered a ball of sap, rolling it through the dust so it gathered on the outer surface. Having cleaned and refilled the flask, Darius put his new ingredients into the water, again waiting to see how it would turn out.

[After Roll Reaction:] Again Darius waited, and again the potion failed. It didn't react at all. The water did nothing but to dissolve the ingredients, rendering them useless. Not nearly discouraged, as he was still experimenting, Darius would try again tomorrow.

Crafting Attempt 3:

Darius returned to his shop the next night. He had some more materials that he could try to get a reaction from. Without further need to stall, he got right to it. He took a small vial of reddish liquid, the juice of some plant he found on floor eight, and poured it into a bowl. He then took some berries, mashing them up into a pastey liquid. The green color was a deep, dark green, like the needles of pine trees. He added the mashed up berries to the reddish liquid, watching as the colors mixed to make a brownish gunk with red-brown liquid around it. Adding a pinch of the pollen from the day before he stirred the mess together then poured it into a flask on top of a burner, waiting to see what would happen.

[After Roll Reaction:] Darius waited patiently, watching the concoction work itself into a frenzy, heated by the burner beneath it. When he had almost thought it had come out to a successful potion, it fizzled out, doing nothing. The potion was rendered useless. He dumped its contents out the window and set up to try again.

Crafting Attempt 4:

Having emptied and cleaned his equipment, Darius was ready to try again. He was a beginner alchemist, so failing many time in a row was no problem. He didn't know what reacted with what, which could produce this or that, or in general, anything about alchemy but the basic idea that you put things together to make a potion. He took both the cap and stem of a crimson mushroom he found on the fourth floor, grinding half of each down to a fine dust, He then took an egg of some type, cracking it and putting the contents in the middle of the dust, mixing it thoroughly. He then ground the shell down and adding it to the mixture. To finish things off, he poured the mixture into a waiting beaker, the flames already hot from before, and waited.

[After Roll Reaction:] Darius waited, slightly less than before as the flames were already full strength, until the concoction started bubbling, then smoking. It made dangerous popping sounds, bitter smoke rising from the mouth of the flask. Darius dumped it like the last, washing the equipment. Zero for four. He like his odds.

Crafting Attempt 5:

Spoiler

It was time once again to try his hand at creating potions. He had just returned from a tiring day of slaying bandits on the various floors of Aincrad. They were good for one thing: giving Darius materials. He had plenty and could finally do whatever experiments he wanted. He took the bud of a flower, the thorax of a large beetle, and the sap from a man eating plant and added all to a bowl, grinding and stirring it together. The end result was a black sludge/past. It did not look appealing, but not all potions had to be appealing. They had to work. He added some of the sludge into a beaker over a burner, adding water and waiting to see how it would turn out.

As he waited, the iconic symbol that his potion had failed happened. It started to smoke, filling the room with an acrid stench. He quickly dumped it and washed off his equipment to try again.

Crafting Attempt 6:

Having cleaned off his equipment, Darius tried again. This time he added the stem to a fluorescent plant that changed colors, the seeds of a strange vegetable, and some berries. After mashing the concoction in the mortar and pestle it came out to a dark blue color in the form of a liquidy paste. He poured it into the beaker over the burner, waiting and watching to see what happens.

After watching, the potion seems to settle, boiling and popping into a clear liquid, losing its blue tint. Thinking this was off, Darius shook the beaker and the liquid inside started to change colors, adopting the property of the plant that made it. It seemed to change between shades of blue, any shade imaginable, due to the color of berries it was made with. Shrugging, Darius added his first successful potion to an empty shelf that he had just put up in the waiting room.

Crafting Attempt 7:

Spoiler

Darius had slept in his workshop, not wasting a moment when he woke,  getting right to crafting. If he could get it out of the way, the rest of his day could be open to doing whatever he wished. He preferred it that way, so this was his normal routine.

Darius unstoppered a small bottle that had a strong alcohol in it, adding it into a bowl. He took a few drops of blood from a monster, adding it to the alcohol and stirring it in. After, he would crush the buds of a handful of different colorful flowers, adding them to the mixture to let them soak. After they had soaked a decent amount of the liquid, he took the remains of the buds and put them into a beaker above a burner, adding water and waiting to see what would happen. As he waited, the potion simply fizzled out, turning out to have no effect.

Crafting Attempt 8:

Cleaning off his equipment, he tried the same process again, except he switch out monsters blood with a tree sap. Apparently though, as the potion fizzled out and had no effect, it seemed trying to get petals to absorb anything was a waste of time.

Crafting Attempt 9:

And so Darius returned for yet another day of crafting. No doubt it would be uneventful as the last, but maybe... just maybe he might get something good today. Wasting no time, he gathered all that he needed and started mixing straight away. A bee's wings, sap from a tree, and a dark root with white spirals were mixed and mashed together in a light brown mush. That mush was then added to the beaker above the burner, boiling to the point where it did nothing exceptional, failing to have a reaction. Darius dumped the concoction, cleaning his equipment to try again.

Crafting Attempt 10:

Attempting to try again, Darius carefully reviewed his supplies to see what might possibly make some sort of potion. It was almost impossible to determine what might do what, as he had barely tried a dozen combinations. He grabbed a strong distillant, some harpy's blood, and pollen from an ancient tree, adding it all to the same bowl. He then took a newt's eye, soaking it in the mixture before placing it in the beaker above the burner, waiting to see how it turned out. It boiled until the eye was non-existent in the beaker, having been broken down. It fizzed successfully, creating a sub-par <Good> potion. Unknown to Darius, it would change the consumer's eye color to a shade of turquoise for a time.
