A ring of steel cutting through the air filled Lycan's ears. To much dismay, it ended with a dull thud. No howl, no yelp, and no burst of blue data. The mother, in the opportunity given by the telegraphed move, managed to lunge herself away from the blow. His blade now lodged in the earth, she took the initiative to counter. Seeping red from several brutal wounds, the mother mustered all her rage from her fallen family and took to the air. This time, the boy would have little time to react.

Yet, as she flew at him, Lycan stared her down with a look that could curdle blood.

The gap closed.

The boy couldn't pry his blade from the soil.

Then, a dull thud echoed throughout the canopies.

The boy's fist buried deep into the underbelly of the mother, his mouth open into a mighty roar. The force of the blow lifted her off trajectory, her gaping maw snapping shut just shy of his face. With continued momentum, Lycan push her body up, over, and launched her into the forest floor like a brute. Her rag doll body slammed into the ground and sent a shower of dry leaves skyward as she tumbled to a stop at the bast of a tree.

As she struggle to stand, Lycan planted his foot next to Harbinger's blade and rocked it free from the earth. He spun his gaze toward her and bared teeth of his own. The beast mark on his arm burned with a fire that comforted him and encouraged him.

Lycan charged her, blade raised and pointed toward her. The frightened and injured animal had just managed to stand. Seeing the beast the boy had become charge at her, the wolf did what her instincts dictated.

She ran.

Lycan stayed hot on her heels, both of them leaving wakes of light from their wounds as they recklessly charged through the forest. Lye made a lash with his blade, but she leap forward in a bound only sheering more fur from her tail.

They wove through the trees in hot pursuit. The mother, even though injured as she was, began to pull ahead. Lycan felt his legs burn from exertion, his body pushing harder and harder to give chase. She would not escape him. Lycan would not give her the mercy she likely deserved. With her pups slain and body racked with damage, he should have let her flee.

Instead, teeth clenched, he sought to finish what he started.

They continued pursuit and right when he thought she would elude him, her paws skid to a halt. Lycan entered the opening to see the cause of her hesitation. She turned to bare her fangs and backed herself up until she could no more.

Lye looked to the cliff behind her and the crags that encircled them both. Behind the boy lead the only exit. Lycan widened his stance and held Harbinger high and parallel to the earth.

"We finish this here," Lycan growled.

Lycan bolted toward her. She lashed back. Steel hissed and fangs gnashed. Only a hair divided the two as blows from both narrowly avoided the other. Now, with Lycan's back to the wall, the female found herself in a position to avenge the fallen. The boy glanced to his left, then right. No escape.

Not that he wanted to.

A wicked grin spread across his lips and he readied for her.

The mother ran at him, aiming low for the legs. For something so near the precipice, Lycan admired her tenacity. As she swung her head to grip his ankle, Lycan leapt into the air. He soared over her and landed into a pivot. Sword held out with open palm behind it, he readied to end this. His foe, running out of options, made another pass.

She repeated her last offense and swept for the legs. Like some strange dance from a distant land, Lycan spun to evade, dipping his sword low for the counter. Still crafty, and much against expectation, the mother leapt out of harms way. Again, the two stood at an impasse, neither willing to forgo the fight. She felt the need to avenge her babies. And he...

He just wanted her dead.

The two made another pass at each other. The boy roared with Harbinger glowing for a diagonal slash and the mother growling with a gnashing maw. Lycan's attack fell short, and provided the matriarch perch on his neck. The beast bit down hard and forced Lycan to grip her by the neck. His blade fell from his grip as he struggled to pry the dying animal from his body. With each claw of his own hands, he felt her bare down on him harder.

Lycan staggered against her weight, his body slamming against the cave wall. His teeth clenched in either rage or pain, he wrapped his fingers around her snout and jaw. With a bloody shout, Lycan poured his strength into setting himself free. Little, but by enough, the mother's jaw gave. The teen successfully loosed her from him and cast her aside.

As soon as she hit the ground, the injured beast recovered. Lycan watched her with fierce eyes and scrambled for his sword. Harbinger laid several feet away, partially covered by red and orange leaves.

The wolf saw his advance and took advantage of his exposed back.

Lycan heard her lung for him and turned just in time for her to knock him to the ground. His hands held her at bay with a fangs snapping wildly for the kill. He did all he could to keep his head from her clasp while pushing from gaining ground on him. As he turned his head, he caught the shimmer of sunlight on Harbinger's edge. Chancing it, he held her at bay while reaching out for his sword, just barely out of reach.

Her breath, hot on his face, drew closer. Without both arms to keep the beast at bay, she would certainly succeed in ending him. Lycan reached out desperately for Harbinger, his fingers just grazing the tip. Lycan groaned, trying to gain the upper hand while also avoiding his untimely demise. With a last ditch effort, he lunged his arm out one more time. His perch on the mother's chest faltered and she bore down on him with fangs gaping wide.

Lycan winced at the pain, but pulled his arm back to him.

"HYRAAAAAGH!!!"

A splash of red motes of data, then a burst of glimmering fragments.

Then, silence.

He stared into her eyes, the severed head staring back at him. Motes of red damage drifted from Lycan's grip around the blade of his own weapon. The teen's chest heaved from the battle. As he watched the light fade from the mother's eyes, guilt began to set in.

The boy murdered a family.

Even without its body, the mother's head made one more pass at Lycan. His eyes shot wide when fangs snapped just a hair's breadth from his face. Then, in conjunction with the rest of her, she burst into fragments. Lye remained on the forest floor and stared emptily through the glimmering mist of his foe. The beast mark on his arm soothed to a cooling radiance and with it, his bloodlust faded.

Still laboring with each breath, Lycan sat up in the alcove between the forest and the cliff. A sharp pain reminded him of his grip on Harbringer's edge. Somehow, in the heat of it all, he used the tip as a grip and cleaved her headless with the remainder of the blade's edge. His grip loosened and the sword fell free. With fatigued muscles, Lycan pulled himself against one of the stones which closed them in. He pressed his back against its sun warmed surface and let his head fall back.

Hazel eyes gazed skyward and the boy took a moment to catch his breath.

"I think.." he began before having to moisten his throat with a gulp, "I think I'll skip out on the battles until I get a little higher in levels..."

Somehow, for some reason, he found his own words amusing, and dryly chuckled at the thought.

- (1) Bread
- (1) Water

Lycan's breathing finally slowed from the engagement and the mid afternoon sun beat down on his battle-scarred body. With a deep, steady inhale and long, drawn out sigh. The boy decided he would enjoy the quiet while he could. He swiped open his inventory and in one hand, generated a plain baker's bun of bread. In the other, he generated a flask of water. Setting down the flask, he dismissed the menus and placed the bread in his lap. Lycan took up the flask, uncapped it, and guzzled down the crisp, clean contents within. A small trail of the glistening refreshment ran down the corner of his lips and along his heated neck.

He pulled the empty flask from his lips with a refreshing, "Ahhhh..."

Lycan tossed the empty flask aside and it dashed into glimmering fragments upon the soft breeze. He picked up the bread from his lap and bit into it, but not enough to cleave a piece. With bread in mouth like any good worshiper of senpais, Lycan eased himself back to his feet. Only the most grievous of wounds still dripped motes of red.

He waltzed over to Harbinger, grabbed it (properly this time), and returned it to its wolf hide sheath on his back. Then, he moseyed over to where the mother of two had fallen and plucked the wolf fang from the forest floor. As he rose, he held the fang to the sunlight with one hand while ripping the bread from his teeth with the other.

"Just data, right?" he tried to reassure his guilt with a mouthful of bread.

He couldn't help but still feel guilty about his actions. Were they in the real world on a hunt, his father would have told them to let them all go. If anything, they would only take down a male. Honestly, Lye could never really tell them apart. His father used to dribble on about all the subtle things to look out for, but it never truly clicked. Based on how many times Lye actually joined him on hunts, the information wouldn't have proved useful. And now, in a world where everything fought back with the intent to kill, gender didn't even matter.

Even with PKers.

Some of the most ruthless were women. They'd hook the young, easily baited teens, draw them into the open and like a pack of wolves, devour them for all their worth. The thought, as morbid as it was, helped justify his recent actions. With a few presses, he put the fang into his inventory and dismissed the lurking guilt of playing this dead game as intended. Lycan took another chomp out of his bun and tried to gauge his surroundings.

"Now, how do I get out of here?" he mumbled with crumbs spilling off his lips.

With a shrug and final glance at where the mother of two fell, Lye waltzed back into the thick of the woods. Every few feet, he took another bit out of his bread until his hunger was satiated. Again, he carefully maneuvered through the trees as not to alert another confrontation. The teen had is fair fill of close calls today. Plus, some form of karma deity would surely have his head for killing off the women and children of the forest.

Luckily, the woods were calm. Only the soft hiss of wind through the leaves could be heard. Even the birds and non-violent critters held their tongues. It unnerved the boy. Either they chose to remain in silence for respect of the fallen, or of fear. Of him, or of something bigger?

He took a deep breath to steel his rattled nerved and pressed on. Each boot step was deliberate and careful as to not cause undue noise.

<<ENEMY APPEARED>>

Alpha Male Wolf: 12/12 HP -- 8 DMG -- 3 MIT

The further he progressed, Lycan began to hear something familiar. It took a few more steps before he realized what it was. Babbling water winding through the forest floor came into view as he pushed aside some brush. His face lit up, remembering that he took this creek all the way from the safe zone at the nearby village. There, he could use one of the warp gates to get back to town and take a long deserved rest.

Fortunate too, since the sun was about to se--

AROOOOOOOO!

"Crap..." the teen swore when the howl came from an uncomfortably close distance behind him.

His hand snapped to Harbinger and turned toward the source. His eyes originally set low, at the same height the pups and mother were. Instead, he only saw fur. His eyes trailed up a good foot or two before engaging the gnarled stare of a fairly angered alpha male.

"Dad? Is that you?" Lycan joked with a concerned smiled and nervous laugh.

The alpha, as expected, lacked a funny bone but where it lacked, it made up in teeth and anger.

Before the towering beast could make his assault, Lycan sprung into action. Harbinger flashed to an illuminated hue of blue and lashed forward. Quickly, almost faster than the eye could see, two blows bit deep into the Alpha's chest. Motes of red data sprayed from its wounds and scattered into the creed bed beneath them. Lycan's stern expression at the end of the sword art turned an upward grin.

The grin, however, faded quickly.

When Lycan looked up, the Alpha neither moved nor whimpered. It stood there, defiant, a large red "X" in its chest and teeth bared with dripping saliva. Some color faded from Lycan's face at the sight. Especially, when the giant beast raised its razor sharp claws and lashed back.

He shook himself from his trance just in the nick of time and bent backward. The fur, as long as the boy's hair, brushed against his face as the paw passed over.

Lycan staggered back from the sheer force behind the blow. The wind that trailed behind the Alpha's paw would be enough to knock a thinner man over. Without letting Lycan pause to catch his balance, the monster lashed at him with its massive jaws. Once snap of them would encompass his whole torso. Once latched, it would spell the end for Lycan.

Panicked, and outclassed, Lycan prepared for the worst. Until, that is, the mark on his arm lit ablaze with a fiery pain. The pain felt more like pleasure to the boy and filled him with an adrenaline he had never felt before. As death's maw bore down on him, Lycan dove to safety. Midair, the teen reached out to grab the wolf's mane with his free hand. It purchased a firm grip of hair and Lye brought in his knees forcing his momentum forward. The weight of the boy wrenched the Alpha's head to the side as its jaws snapped shut.

Lycan began to feel his body swing around and before he let go, he kicked his legs skyward. Loose from the Alpha's mane, Lycan's body lifted a few feet into the air, long enough for Harbinger to light its edge with the glow of an activated sword art.

"SNAKE!" Lye called out, his body now free-falling toward the back of the Alpha's skull.

"BITE!" he finished, and Harbinger leapt forward in a burst of speed. The gap closed and the thick, wet thud of two successful blow collided with the back of the Alpha's skull. The massive wolf slammed into the winding creek with a splash, Lycan landing atop its head. With a bent knee and forward roll, Lye dramatically came to a halt at the end of the beast's snout, Harbinger at the ready and dripping motes of red.

The Alpha drew a deep, ragged breath, made eye contact with his assailant and with a slow, defeated exhale, burst into glistening fragments of data.

Lycan let out a victory sigh that sounded more like a hiss mixed with a growl. His feral expression remained even after the alpha burst into shards. He remained ready for a continuation of the fight, leaving just a boy next to a softly gurgling creek with nothing but the wind to accompany him.

"It's... over..." Lycan mentally declared.

He lowered Harbinger's edge and walked to the creek where the glimmering item waited for him. To his surprise, a pop up appeared  when he neared it. Lycan set Harbinger back in his home before taking a knee in the calm waters.

"Hmm..." Lycan rubbed at his chin. "What do we have here? Fifty col?! Not bad! And what's this?"

Lycan selected the material and read its name:

<Alpha Wolf's Jawbone>

"Guess the small one's just give you a tooth and the big ones give you a whole damn jawbone," Lycan remarked as he hit accept and both transferred to his inventory. He rose to his feet and pat his pants free of debris.

"Home then..." he mumbled, the sun now on the horizon.

The mark on Lye's arm stopped burning and began to emanate a cooling sensation, as if it felt satiated from today's battles. It caused the boy to rub it with a concerned expression. He still didn't know what it was, what it did, or what it was for. Just the image of the odd NPC he met on his first day came to mind. The teen tried to shake his head to rid himself of the memory, just focusing on taking the river path to the exit.

Only a few minutes of time placed Lycan into another clearing. Instead of a forest, a decently sized plain stretched out before him. Green and orange with the fading sun, Lycan smiled at the site of the village. He raised his arm to block out the dying light from his eyes, then broke into a sprint.

"Galli is going to be excited about this haul," he thought, excited to meet the NPC and his daughter, Leccah again.
