[SP-F1] The Harvest Before The Snow

Recommended Posts

((OOC: This is a gathering thread. Each post will have a roll attached. Loot Die over 15 yield 1 Material. Mob die at 10 or 1 will spawn a Mob with min criteria for loot. ))

Another sunrise meant another day out in the fields. Snow took her promise to Daire seriously and when the news came, her friend had achieved level 40 just weeks prior. Spear planted in the rich garden soil, the young phalanx pulled up her menu. Under the status screen, her level read three. A weight formed in Snow's chest. The gap between three and forty was far greater than she had thought. Daire managed to accomplish it in two years, how many would it take Snow? The young blonde navigated to her inventory and selected a pair of harvesting gloves. These were standard issue in the Beginner's Refuge, but served no real purpose. They had no stats and since the dirt here could be removed with the click of an icon, they were more an item of days long past in a world more distant than this one.

With her spear firmly planted in the soil behind her, Snow began to tend to the plants in the garden. Much to her dissatisfaction, another player must have recently made a pass in this area. Many of the plants had already been picked bare and were on the tail end of their durability timers. Snow selected the "dismantle" option on the plant in front of her. The plant vanished and yielded a popup notifying her of an addition to her inventory. She took a knee and pushed apart the earth with two finger, boring a small hole in the soil. She swiped her finger over the hole with her gardening gloves and produced a sub-menu of various seeds in her inventory. She spun down the list to a "Carrion Squash Seed". Compared to the real world, this type of plant produced a vegetable similar to cucumbers in the real world. If Snow was ever going to open her own restaurant, she needed to start gathering ingredients.

She selected the "plant" option and the seed appeared deep in the hole. Snow slid her hand over the earth and tamped down the soil. A small notification popped up with a countdown timer on it for the plant's maturity. Tomorrow, these would be ready to harvest.

The young blonde smiled. A cool autumnal breeze swept across the fields and caught her hair into its dance. A few stray wisps crossed her field of vision and she set them back in place with a sweep of her fingers. In the distance, the once fearsome boars she feared casually grazed away on the swaying greens. The hills of the plains gently rolled, allowing the wind to move the grass in what looked like a green sea. A faint aroma of wildflowers blessed the easterly breeze from the west fields. One day, Snow would have to harvest the herbs and honey that grew there. Her bright blue eyes swept the horizon for danger and only found herself in peaceful serenity.

"This is why she loved going out," Snow thought in regards to her late roommate from the America's.

The teen took a breath of the fresh air before returning to her toils. She shuffled over a smidgen and examined the type of plant at her knees. She gripped one of the broad, green leaves and rubbed it with gloved fingers. The texture yielded a slight resistance and felt slightly abrasive. She cupped one of the flowers in her hand. It was small, white, with six petals and two stamens which held a soft pink pollen on them. The phalanx leaned over and inhaled the flower's sweet and fruity aroma. Without checking the information window, Snow made her guess.

"Aragol Root," she spoke aloud.

Then, with a swipe of her finger, the info menu appeared. In the title, "Arogol Root". Luckily, this one was in its peak durability range for harvesting. Snow gripped it by the base of its stems and gave a firm tug. The root vegetable pulled from the soil and provided a pop up stating the material was in good condition. Snow selected harvest and the plant vanished into her inventory as well as two seeds to replenish it. Snow immediately pulled up the sub menu and planted one of the seeds in the existing hole. She tamped it down and dismissed the maturity timer.

Before Snow shifted over to the next plant in line, she twisted her torso and stretched out for her spear. It was awkwardly out of reach but with a few wiggles and a pull, she loosed it from the soil. The haft toppled toward her, but she caught it just in time. With weapon in hand, she shuffled her knees in the dirt over to the next plant. To avoid having to fetch her spear for longer while, the girl thrust it into dirt to her right and pushed the haft to lean further away from her. That would buy her about another three plants worth without having to get up.

Satisfied that her spear remained close enough she could grab it in a moment's notice, but far enough as not to encumber her, she turned to the plant in front of her. This poor thing exhibited wilted leaves. The outer edges were crisp and crumbled in her fingers. The young Valkyrie immediately pulled the plant's info menu up to dismantle it.

It was too late.

The menu appeared for only a second before closing itself out. Then, the plant shattered into glittering fragments. Smaller and smaller they broke down until it only dust drifted in the wind. The girl let out a sad sigh and shook her head. The previous player should have replanted it before they left, but not all were as caring and vigilant as her. Snow pushed her finger into the soil where the plant once stood, opened her sub menu, and selected a random seed. She tamped down the hole and dismissed the popup.

Content with the planted seed, Snow shuffled herself over to the next plant. Before she checked its status, a squeal in the distance caught her attention. She looked up to witness one of the wolf type monsters clutching one of the boars on the hind quarters. The boar roared and tried to escape to no avail. It only took seconds for the animal to lock up, then scatter into deleted ash. In its wake, the wolf took a prone position and began to gnaw on a leg of ham. While not the most graphic display of predator vs prey, Snow felt uneased by what transpired. She glanced behind her to check if her spear remained.

With a relieved sigh, she turned back to the plant in front of her as it too reduced to digital ash. Snow huffed in disapproval. The players that were supposed to maintain this garden were surely slacking off. With a few reluctant swipes and presses in her menu, Snow produced another seed. She pressed a hole in the dirt, dropped the seed in, and tamped it down.

This time, Snow took a moment to stand. She lifted her leg and gripped her ankle to stretch out her quads. Sitting like that for a period of times tended to put a stiffness in the muscles. Even in this world, the body had its subtle quirks and limitations. The young Valkyrie let her foot down and stretched out the opposing leg. As she did, she saw a player out in the fields dismiss a boar with their dagger. As they bent down to retrieve their loot, the young man caught a glimpse of her. With a shift of his eyes, he finally waved at her.

Snow let her leg free and smiled as she waved back. The player nodded and before he took a step toward her, another boar barreled at him. The man startled, spun around, and engaged the boar with a parry. Snow softly laughed to herself which transitioned into a yawn. She stretched out her arms with the yawn and as she finished, another plant burst into data beside her.

Snow sighed and got back to work. She lowered herself to her knees, produced another seed, and planted it in the fertile soil.

The girl reached behind her to fetch her spear. With a wiggle and a lift, she loosed it and planted its tip into the ground just a little further down the line. Snow shifted her body to the next plant and just as she got her legs comfortable, a new fruit appeared on one of the vines. Snow's eyes widened.

"Finally! Someone who followed up on the plants!" Snow thought to herself as she gently worked the ingredient from the vine. With a tap of the accept button, the blonde had another material to use back at the restaurant. With a smile, she shuffled to the next plant in line.

The girl again shifted herself to the next plant in line. This one looked sickly and unable to bare anything usable. With a raised brow in concern, she wondered why it hadn't already fell into pixels. It was not common for the flora to look this sickly. In fact, they usually remained healthy and fresh even when their durability ran out. With a hesitant finger, Snow reached out to check its info window.

It was that moment she know something was wrong.

The ground beneath the plant opened up, the soil sliding and sifting into dark cracks. The teen quickly lifted herself to her feet and took a step back.

"A trap?" she mouthed.

To her shock and awe, the wilted plant rose from the ground, sprouting from the head of a large and grotesque earthworm. On what she could only assume was its head, its slimey flesh parted to expose a maw of shark-like teeth. Half confused, half disgusted, her instincts deflected her attention to her spear rooted in the earth beside the monstrosity.
