[SP-F1] Preparations for "Tomorrow" [Material Hunting]

Recommended Posts

It took a degree of consideration before he was finally able to head out into the surrounding fields on his own. By no means did he plan to test his luck by fighting alone, oh heck no. His main intent was to try his hand at the interesting thing Dynaon showed him during their last venture. Material could be extracted by interacting with the local environment. While Kranzer couldn’t really craft anything it wouldn’t hurt to have a small stockpile going. They could be sold for profit or they could be offered to someone else to help pay for an item to be made. Regardless he would find a use for them, one way or another.

He walked over and crouched down by a clump of grass. The interaction window appeared after he touched it and he pressed <<Extract>>. “Nothing,” he muttered. He should have expected as much. He’d tried this before with no results to speak of and while it was discouraging he wouldn’t give up on it quite so easily this time.

Kranzer moved over towards another patch of tall grass and brought up the interaction menu. “This probably won’t go well,” he muttered. To really get anything out of this venture he was going to need to be willing to put a lot of time and effort into it. One thing he had an abundance of was time. Effort though? The amount of effort he put forth varied and it was highly dependant on the situation. If he was met with too much success he’d likely just end up shrugging and walking away. With no real expectation for success he pressed <<Extract>> again. This time though his eyes widened when the menu vanished and a small blue orb appeared in front of him.

For several moment she just sat there not knowing what to do. Eventually though he reached out and tapped the item. His eyes flowed over the line which identified it as being <<Material>> and could be used for crafting. The corner of his lips curled as he smirked. “Maybe this won’t be all that bad,” he muttered as he stood up and looked around to make sure there weren’t any boars or other MOBs that spawned nearby while he wasn’t looking. Once he was certain he wasn’t in danger he looked around for the next spot and try his luck again.

Nothing. Nothing at all. The menu flashed read before it vanished beneath his tough. His smirk withered and a frown dominated his expression. “Then again maybe not.” When he found the material in his last attempt he felt overly elated, but now that elation broke like a twig beneath a heavy boot. With no desire to try right away Kranzer walked away from the clump of grass. While shielding his eyes he tried to estimate just how much time he had till the sun started its downward plunge towards the distant horizon. It was roughly overhead so he likely had quite a few hours to go before the onset of dusk and he wanted to be within the city well before then.

The guttural snorts alerted him to the presence of danger but by how faint it was he figured they were still a good distance off and it wasn’t likely that they would aggro to him from so far away. That being the case he still didn’t want to take any risks so it was about time to relocate. It was a good thirty minutes or more before he found a new location that would satisfy his criteria. Once he felt relatively safe he figured it was time to try his hand at searching once again.

Kranzer spent roughly one minute longer in his attempt to ensure the security of his location. At first he walked around in a small circle around the area he intended to search through. His path would carry him farther and farther out with each pass until he cleared thirty feet out in every direction. After that he found the highest hill he could and crouched down low. Several more minutes were spent just sitting there as he observed his surroundings. He was looking for any spawns in the area. The last thing he needed was to be attacked while his guard was down. A watchful gaze was also kept out for any other players in the area. After all monsters were hardly the only danger that lurked outside of the safe zones.

As horrid as it sounded there were those players who, for whatever reason, saw fit to attack other players. Player killers they were called. In most games it only meant the one who got killed had to respawn with a penalty that varied from game to game. Here though the act carried a lot more weight than usual. Here PKers were nothing more than murderers since if you died here you actually died in the real world. A disgruntled sigh escaped Kranzer’s lips as he thought about all the various forms danger came in out here and he started to question why he even chose to come. Eventually though he grew satisfied that the area was safe. So he stood up and walked back down the hill towards a small dip that led down into a vast and open area. From here he would hopefully be able to see anyone or anything as it approached.

Once he found a suitable clump of grass he crouched down and touched it. When the interaction window appeared he pressed the <<Extract>> option as he’d done every other time. Then he waited with baited breath to see what happened next.

The window flashed red and vanished with nothing to show for the effort, as minimal as it actually was.

His hand hovered over the area where the menu had just vanished. Rather than a small item that waited for his retrieval there was nothing but the grass he’d just tried to extract from. Kranzer’s frown deepened but he didn’t dally around too long. Once he was on his feet he simply looked down at his hand and shook his head. “Nope,” he muttered. For an instant he almost wished Dynan was there to break up the monotony of this endeavor… then he quickly pushed that thought from his mind. “What the hell am I thinking. If he was here he’d only give me a headache.” Kranzer scooted over to make another attempt.

This time when he was met with failure Kranzer didn’t mope nor did he hesitate. He simply scooted to the side to find another clump of grass.

Idly he tapped the grass to bring up the interaction menu. This was quickly becoming a habit by this point and he’d just keep doing this until he’d searched the entire area if need be. For now he would set his limit to five items if he could find that before the sun dipped too far towards the horizon.

The telltale red flash indicated his search was in vain once more. He could almost hear that fool over his shoulder telling him he should put more effort into it. Just how was he supposed to put more effort into interacting with a menu interface? Should he scream enthusiastically while he presses the confirmation button? Kranzer sighed as he thought about how ridiculous that would be. Especially if anyone happened to be within earshot and heard his “battle cry.” “Hmph.” Kranzer glanced around to make sure there wasn’t anyone or anything lurking nearby and only when he was certain he was still alone did his focus return to the task at hand.

This time he spent a few minutes rifling around the area until he found another patch of grass with a few pebbles strewn about the area. “Hmmm,” he mumbled in curiosity. He’d been going about this as if only the grass could offer him the items he hunted for but now he wondered if anything could be used for that process. Kranzer shrugged halfheartedly as he walked picked up a small stone up and held it up in the palm of his left hand. He stared at it a few moments before he touched it and the interaction menu popped up. He felt a hint of relief when he saw the option to try and extract material from it so he quickly pressed it and hoped for the best.

The menu vanished as the rock flashed before it transitioned into the item he was seeking. A slow smile spread across his face before he realized he'd only managed to find two so far. With that thought his smile started to fade. Kranzer was remiss to admit it but he still had a long way to go.

Kranzer picked up another pebble and tapped it. Once more he pressed <<Extract>>. Only this time the little rock simply vanished which incited not only a grimace but a low growl from the indecisive player. "I suppose it was too much to expect to find two in a row." Idly he pondered over how much faster this would have gone if he had someone here to help him search. Kranzer sighed dejectedly as he pushed those thoughts from his mind. It wouldn't do him any good to try and focus on that. For now he just needed to keep his mind on the task at hand. Suddenly the sound of howling drew his attention away from his thoughts. "Damn," he muttered as he quickly stood up and looked around. The small forms were rather far off so he had to squint but they looked very much like wolves... and they were headed his way. With another curse the indecisive player turned around and did the only reasonable thing. He ran away before they really noticed him.

He ran for what felt like hours but in reality it was closer to forty minutes based on how far the progressed the sun made as it traversed the sky towards the western horizon.  Kranzer crouched low in some tall grass he prayed would conceal him from the prying eyes of those wolves if they managed to catch his trail. He waited there with baited breath and listened. Several minutes passed as he waited and when he felt confident that he wasn't followed he stood up and walked out of the grass only to turn around and crouch down once more. His finger flicked out and opened the interaction menu and instantly hit the <<Extract>> option. He'd done this so many times before it was becoming like second nature to him at this point. The menu faded and nothing appeared. He frowned slightly but it was pretty much what he expected to happen.

Kranzer stood up and took a step back so he could get a better look at his surroundings. There was plenty of grass and the gentle breeze that flowed through gently caressed his skin like the subtle touch of a lover. The cool air felt good against his skin which when he thought about the fact that he was just a bunch of 1s and 0s it just seemed really odd that he could feel that. Then again he only thought he could which is where the sensation actually came form. When he turned his boot struck something in the grass and upon closer inspection he realized there was a small rock hidden within. Once he picked it up he tossed it up in the air and then quickly caught it before it fell too far. Once more he tried his luck to extract something from it but once more he was met with failure. The rock was quickly tossed aside with a slight shake of his head. Those brown eyes were obscured as he closed his eyes and tilted his head back to enjoy the breeze and the myriad of scents that rolled in with the breeze. There wasn't any reason he couldn't simply enjoy the small things while he was out here after all.

He only stayed like that for a few seconds before he turned his attention back to the task at hand. His brown eyed gaze flowed over his immediate surroundings before he took notice of a peculiar rock protruding from a small patch of grass that had been bent down when he'd initially run through. He'd tried other rocks so that one would make not difference despite its strange shape. Kranzer walked over and plucked the stone out none too gently and lifted it up for closer inspection. Unlike the others this stone didn't appear to be naturally shaped. It had sharp angles which to him meant someone had shaped this rock but then again he could have been mistaken. Either way he simply opened the menu and tapped <<Extract>> and was actually surprised when the stone started to emit a soft glow and transitioned into a <<Material>>. "Well its about time," he muttered as he took a quick count of everything he'd found so far. His brow furrowed when he realized he only had three. Which wasn't bad per se since he was only out here to get five.

Rather than being able to give himself a pat on the back for his successful search Kranzer's eyes widened as he heard that distant howl once more. "Crap," he called out as he quickly stood up and held his hand up to his brow to shield his eyes against the light of the sun. It had started its downward plunge towards the western horizon so he only had a limited amount of time before he needed to head back to the Town of Beginnings. However, if these wolves had his scent... well that could prove problematic. The two dots were tiny from this distance but this would be their second encounter. Kranzer let out a low growl as he scooped up another small pebble as he turned and ran towards the city gates off in the distance. So far they didn't seem to be chasing him but it would have been a huge coincidence if they just happened to be going in the same direction. He quickly opened the menu on the pebble and hit <<Extract>> to no avail. It was tossed aside where it vanished in a bundle of knee high grass. For now he'd just focus on putting some distance between him and those wolves before he would risk resuming his search.

He kept running until their howls faded in the distance like some bad memory he was all too ready to be rid of. Those <<Dire Wolves>> appeared to be rather intent to find him. Idly he pondered if they could actually track his scent or if this was just a different pair each time. It was a very important question but not one he could risk trying to find out. Most certainly not on his own. For the moment he was safe and the walls that would offer him refuge from the dangers of the wilds loomed ever closer the farther he ran. One look at the sky revealed he had at most one more hour before he really needed to head back to the city. After that night will fall and then he'd have difficulty seeing the Mobs as they spawned. One misstep after dark could very well spell his doom. For now though he had a different task he needed to focus on. As he reached down towards a small patch of grass he quickly attempted to extract some material from it.... and nothing. "Bah." He really needed to find at least two more of those blasted things that were remarkably elusive. As strange as that thought was.

Once his frustration eased a bit he sifted through the surrounding grass a bit in search of something else. At first he didn't find anything that really matched what he was looking for. However, he tried to not allow that to get him down too much. His search continued on for longer than he really should have let it. Once his discontent outweighed his desire to continue Kranzer stood up with a soft growl. "There isn't anything here," he muttered before took a few steps to the left and started digging around in a different section of the tall grass. "Come on," he muttered softly. The grass parted beneath his hands yet no matter how hard he tried he just couldn't seem to find anything.

His search continued as his hands delved into the tall grass a bit more vigorously. At one point his hands closed around something hard which he thought was a small stone and could have served as a source of material. However, once he pulled his hand free he realized it was just a dense patch of grass. His brow furrowed as he tossed it aside once it was revealed to be useless. Once he was on his feet he idly kicked the object he'd discovered with the side of his boot and sent it skidding across the ground only to land in a patch of tall grass. Grass that suddenly shook violently as a guttural growl escaped. By the time whatever had been in there crawled out, Kranzer was long gone. With nothing but a small cloud of dust that billowed up in his wake.

Kranzer continued to run and the walls of the Town of Beginnings loomed ever closer. If he kept this up he'd be returning well ahead of schedule and while that was normally something he could live with he hadn't filled his self imposed quota just yet. A soft grumble rumbled in his throat when his pace slackened to a jog. Once he passed by a suitable patch of grass that looked promising he stopped and crouched down beside it. Kranzer reached in and pushed the grass aside as he started his search anew. He needed at least two more before he could afford to call it a day and still boast success.

The sun continued its downward plunge towards the western horizon. When he realized this it felt like a heavy weight pressed down upon him and a slight sense of grief gripped his heart. If he didn't pick things up and quick he'd either have to give up for the day or stay close to the walls and continue his search after the last remnants of the day had faded to give way to the myriad of little twinkling dots upon the backdrop of the sky above. His hand dropped to the hilt of his dagger and the feel of it in his hand made him feel somewhat reassured. At least if he ended up being caught by something he could at least fight it off. Kranzer stared at the grass through a wide-eyed gaze as he slapped his open hands against his cheeks, which required that he release the grip upon the blade's hilt.

What was he thinking? Fighting? He'd be much better off if he just fled. A soft sigh escaped his lips as he realized that kid's influence was having more of an affect upon him than he cared to admit. Once more Kranzer started to rifle through the grass at his feet and this time he came back with a small object which brought a smile to his face. "Only one more to go," he muttered.

The item was stowed away as he started to sift through the grass once more until he found a suitable stone. It actually felt a little heavy in his hand as he picked it up and activated the interaction menu. Once he attempted to extract and figure out if there was anything inside the stone vanished and was replaced with the fifth and final item he'd been hunting for. A wide grin spread across his face as he simply stared at it for a few moments. "Well... I guess when I desperately needed it to my luck improved." The item was quickly stowed away and his brown-eyed gaze lifted to check the progress the sun had made. It was swiftly approaching dusk but there was still plenty illumination that allowed him to see his surroundings. The dim light did limit the range of his vision but it still afforded him enough to know if anything was trying to sneak up on him.

His eyes swept across his surroundings and once he was certain nothing lurked out there he smiled once more and decided to at least give it one more go.

Rather than try his luck with another stone Kranzer simply spent a moment searching around for a sizable patch of grass. Once he found it he walked over and crouched down next to it. The grass parted easily enough as he started to dig through it. He waited with baited breath as he made the unusual decision to push his luck, but the game ultimately paid off. The item he pulled free of the grass was yet another <<Material>>. Which made a total of six and he stared at it through a wide-eyed gaze. "Well i'll be," he muttered but he let that thought go unfinished. The item was pocketed and with a slight shrug of his shoulders Kranzer made the decision to try it again. After all why should he quit when he's already on such a roll?

His hands continued to move through the grass as he sought to find another <<Material>> hidden within. A little time passed and he continued his search even though a slight sense of dread had started to settle over him by this point. The illumination from the sun had all but ceased by this point and the sounds that most attributed to the night rose up around the young man like an early night chorus. There was a certain urgency behind his search now but the instant his hand was pulled away with a <<Material>> held within... well a full blown grin broke out on his face and for the moment he forgot that it was already passed the time he had planned to pass through the town's gates by.
