Real name: Rin Miyamoto
Age: 15
Gender: Female
Height: 5'7"

History:
Rin was born to a CEO and a lawyer. Her parents were strict and expected her to succeed academically, as she was their only child, but Rin was talented and willing to please — she didn't find this very difficult, and in return, her parents were as loving as she could expect, considering that they were constantly busy with their jobs. For the most part, her early childhood was untroubled. She had a group of friends she enjoyed playing with, parents who encouraged her interests and nurtured her talents, and access to pretty much any material object she wanted since her parents were wealthy and she was their perfect little girl. Although her parents were reserved and usually too busy to spend time with her, Rin knew that they did care for her; once, when she was eight, she fell off a tree and broke her arm. Although she wasn't in life-threatening danger and had already been taken to the hospital, both of her parents took the entire day off to comfort her. Her father missed several important meetings, and her mother had to reschedule her whole day, ultimately spending her entire weekend catching up with her missed work. However, her parents never once complained that she was being a burden and focused only on caring for her. The small ways in which they showed their affection meant the world to her, and she did everything that she could so she could continue to be worthy of it.
Of course, such an idyllic life couldn't last forever. At the age of eleven, her mother got into a car accident while Rin was in the car. While it wasn't really Rin's fault the other driver had been texting while driving, and accidentally crashed into her their car — Rin had been distracting her mother with a funny story, and she blamed herself for the accident. The accident led to her mother's death, and afterwards, her father grew far more distant from her, upset by the reminder of his dead wife. He became demanding and significantly less affectionate, attempting to make up for it by showering her with material items. Unfortunately, Rin was a rather perceptive child and immediately noticed the change in his behavior. She felt that she had failed her parents, who had only ever given her affection, and began to push herself even more than she had before, trying to make up for her mistakes. When her father remained distant and even started dating again, she began to spend all her time in a desperate attempt to become good enough for her father to accept again, but this behavior alienated her best friend, who Rin had been very close to. Outside of her parents, Miyuki had been the only person who Rin had truly cared for, and after Miyuki remained best friends with Rin even after Rin began to spend more time studying than paying attention to her friends, Rin had developed a dependence on Miyuki, the only person who showed sincere affection for Rin. However, Rin's attempt to gain her father's love back changed her personality, causing the two girls to grow further apart until they barely spoke to each other outside of class. Miyuki joined a different friend circle in an attempt to gain popularity and stopped associating with Rin. Despite this, Rin still cared deeply for Miyuki, and the other girl's actions pained Rin greatly, so that her only motivation had become her father's approval.
Sadly, Rin, having misunderstood her father's reasons for his sudden coldness towards her, failed to gain his affection again, and eventually, she gave up. She still loved him, since she thought that his reservations about her were justified, so she did her best to act like a happy child and continue to succeed, even though her social life was basically nonexistent. Inside, though, she had become depressed, and she developed anorexia at the age of thirteen. She was formally diagnosed and hospitalized when she was fourteen, which was when she regained some of her father's attention. Naturally, she attributed his attention to her anorexia, and in an extremely misguided attempt to keep his affection, she deliberately caused her anorexia to worsen. By her fifteenth birthday, at a height of 5'7" and a weight of just 85 pounds, she was spending the majority of her time at the hospital, often hooked up to IV tubes, and doctors were worried about whether she would be able to survive. Her father began to spend more time with her, talking to her about how concerned for her he was.
Eventually, Rin's desire to please her father outweighed her desire for his affection, and she decided to try to recover, realizing that her anorexia could lead to her death at a low weight of just 79 pounds . . . but anorexia was as much of a coping mechanism for her as it was an attempt to gain her father's attention, and it was much harder than she had thought it would be. She began gaining weight again, but found the idea of eating food revolting. When Sword Art Online was released, her therapist suggested that she try playing; it would give her a way to experience exercising without harming her recovery (since overexercise had been part of her anorexia), and she could try the food in the game, knowing that it wouldn't cause her to gain weight, and gradually become more used to eating, a sensation that might transfer into the new world. Of course, her father immediately bought the game for her, and Rin logged in, hoping it would change her life.
She was right . . . but she didn't anticipate how.

Personality:
Rin is reserved and somewhat socially awkward as a result of being withdrawn and depressed for several years — when she entered SAO, she hadn't been regularly attending school for over a year, and even before that, depression and anorexia had prevented her from forming meaningful social connections. However, she is intelligent enough to generally pick up on social cues, and her upbringing has made her very polite, if rather quiet. She is depressed, bordering on suicidal, and sees very little meaning in life; however, she does want to get better, if only for her father, and desperately hopes for something that can make her feel alive again. Although Rin finds it difficult to become close to people and has only truly valued her parents and Miyuki throughout her life, she is also emotionally fragile, and when the people she cares for stop caring for her, she suffers greatly. She is willing to go to great lengths to please and protect those that she cares for.

Virtues:

Intelligent: Rin is both book-smart and street-smart. She absorbs knowledge like a sponge and remembers all kinds of facts after hearing or reading about them just briefly, a talent she developed through the many years she spent trying to please her parents by succeeding academically, but her intelligence also comes from being able to quickly synthesize the details of any given situation and react immediately. Rin is very logical and can analyze the advantages and disadvantages of a choice without taking her emotions about it into account.

Endurance: Rin is capable of enduring hunger, fatigue, and pain to a greater extent than most people. This is mostly a result of her anorexia; after going for days overexercising and eating very little or nothing, Rin became quite capable of ignoring hunger and fatigue. By this point, she has become so accustomed to ignoring her body's signals to the point where she no longer experiences these feelings to the same degree as others.

Caring: Although Rin finds it difficult to form meaningful relationships with other people, she cares greatly for anyone she does get to know. Once she develops a relationship with someone else, she usually gives more to a relationship than she receives. She's willing to do pretty much anything for someone she cares for, and also forgives them very easily, as she tends to think very highly of the people she becomes close to, making it difficult for her to believe that they could do anything wrong.

Flaws:

Insecure: Rin finds fault in herself easily because of her abandonment issues, feeling that the reason her parents and Miyuki left her was that she simply wasn't good enough. As a result, she's always convinced that anyone who seems to care for her has some ulterior motive or simply pities her; unfortunately, this assumption is often correct, reinforcing her insecurity. Her insecurity also often leads her to believe that she is incapable of doing things that she actually can accomplish, meaning that when she's in a group, she'll delegate tasks to others if they express even the slightest interest in doing so, suggesting that she's lazy when she's actually not. At the same time, Rin will try to do everything someone asks her to in order to compensate for her believed faults.

Reserved/Socially Awkward: A natural extension of her insecurity, Rin finds it difficult to interact with others because she always assumes that people find her annoying, uninteresting, or dumb. She's very self-conscious, but she tries to hide this by simply being very polite and somewhat reserved. However, her behavior means that she often gives the impression of being slightly standoffish and uninterested in interacting with others, which, in turn, often causes people to become less interested in interacting with her.

Perfectionist: Rin tries to be perfect in everything that she does in an attempt to compensate for her faults. As a result, she often pushes herself too hard, especially when her standards are unrealistic. Generally, though, this just leads to further dissatisfaction with herself, since nothing can really be perfect.
