[PP-F1] A Fixer-Upper <<Earning A Living>> .:COMPLETE:.

Recommended Posts

It was a few days after his travelling to Horunka Village that Nathan decided to go on back. He'd found all that he could there and even gotten in some practice on some boars while at it as well as another one of those fiber plants from previously. There was one quest he might come back to do later, something about medicine. He was too underpowered to tackle that right now though so it would have to wait. Now he was heading back to the Town of Beginnings, already almost there in fact. He was contemplating that last fight that he had with the Dire Wolf during the crossing over and how he needed to be more prepared for fights. Armour was the obvious solution of course but he wasn't exactly the richest of players at the moment. There was a shop though on the eleventh floor that he had heard of where the best tailor was, a woman who could probably make him extremely well made leather armour. He doubted that he had the money for that and there was a sense of lacking in pride on having to rely on someone else for his well being. He could provide somewhat, which was why he was heading back to the Town of Beginnings. He was going to get a job so he could save up on Col or even, if possible, make his own armour.

It was approaching high noon when Nathan reached the gates of the Town of Beginnings and entered the city. Immediately he headed towards the market district and walked the streets in search of some way that he might get a job or some easy quest. Anything that would give him some more Col. As he walked the streets through the crowds he saw one shop that was displaying some leather armour and clothing and some small toy charms. He pushed the door open and entered, hoping he could find something cheap. When he entered the shop there was no one at the counter so Nathan explored the merchandise. Eventually a thin and old NPC entered the room from a door behind the counter. The NPC was carrying a needle and some thread as well as a bolt of cloth.

"What can I do you for, good sir?" the NPC asked Nathan.

Nathan took another cursory look over the shop before replying, "I'm just looking for something cheap that will protect me."

The NPC looked over Nathan a bit and shook his head despairingly. "Sadly I have nothing in stock to offer you. However, I do have something else that might be of worth to you. How about I give you the chance to make your own protection?"

A window popped up in front of Nathan, asking for him to accept a quest called <<Earning A Living>> and after looking over the requirements Nathan hit the accept button. It wouldn't be terribly difficult. All he had to do was go out and get some leather and then come back and make a bit of clothing to appease the old man and he would have the right to make shop. That would be quite an interesting addition to his playing. He nodded slightly and gave the NPC a wave as he left the shop, even though the NPC would not have registered such an act. Nathan walked down the road, considering his options. He could go out onto the fields and just kill a few boars and just make the clothing from that. It wouldn't be terribly difficult at all. Or he could just hunt for some cloth and other fibers... Maybe a bit of both, fight a bit then relax. That sounded like a plan in fact. He smiled softly and headed towards the gate. A solid plan for once instead of just doing something spontaneous and without thought. He enjoyed a bit of structure in his life.

Down through the streets and out the gates Nathan went off into the plains surrounding the Town of Beginnings. He walked for a bit outside of the safe zone and towards the usual boar hunting grounds. He picked up a smooth stone rock as he walked and turned it over and over in his hands. It might be a good thing he stumbled onto this quest. The quest would kill two birds with one stone. On one hand he would take care of that issue with a lackage of Col. On the other hand he would be able to solve his weakness a bit with some armour to pad his stats a bit. This was a pretty win-win situation. Nathan delved deep into the fields in search of a boar to take out and spotted one on the horizon. He moved towards it and once he got within a few metres he threw the stone at its rump to agro it. The stone hit the pig in the back and it squealed loudly and immediately turned on Nathan.

The boar felt the stinging pain of the rock striking it and turned towards its assailant and charged. It ran at a full sprint, its four stubby legs carrying it as quickly as possible towards Nathan. About a metre away from the player the pig tripped on a protruding rock and face planted into the ground, squealing loudly in embarrassment with its rump sticking up in the air comically. The boar was just asking to be struck with the blade at this point, almost a pitiful beginning to a fight.

Nathan almost laughed as he watched the boar fall to the ground mid charge but quickly took the initiative and went to thrust his sword into the pig. As he ran forward he brought his blade up but then he heard a sudden and quick rustling behind him so at the last second he hesitated and almost looked behind him before realizing he still had an enemy beneath him. He tried to bring the sword down on the boar before it could get up but by this point it was already standing and about to poke him with its tusks. Nathan's blade swished by where the pigs back had once been sticking up but due to his hesitation it no longer was. Realizing that another attack was imminent he backed off and temporarily took his eyes off the boar, trying to pin point what had been running up behind him. He wasn't able to see anything, it was as though whatever it was had just fallen to the ground and stopped moving. He glared at the grass, willing whatever it was to come out and fight if it must then heard the boar beginning its seconds charge.

The boar had swung out at the player with its tusks in an attempt to make contact before the disengagement but couldn't land a blow. The large pig got agitated as the player smoothly backed off, not having received any damage yet while the pig had managed to only make a fool of itself. It snorted a few times and pawed at the ground and looked up, noticing the player wasn't paying attention. The boar let loose a loud squeal and charged forward quickly, so quickly in fact that right before reaching the player it tripped on its own feet and face planted once more. The pig squealed so loudly that the player jumped slightly and backed off a bit, giving the boar just a bit more longer to get back up on its feet though the player still had plenty of time to attack it.

Nathan watched as the boar came barreling towards him and prepared to dodge to the side to get out of its way. However, before the boar was able to close the distance, the boar ended up tripping and face planting into the ground. Nathan really had not been expecting this to happen and the sudden and loud squeal put Nathan off a bit more. In fact, he jumped a bit and backed off a bit before he realized he should probably press the attack. He darted forward and swiped his rapier towards the boar. By this time though the boar had already gotten back to its feet and quickly stepped back out of the blade's reach. Now Nathan was easily within the boar's range of attack so he quickly prepared for a dodge to the side.

The boar struggled in the dirt for a few seconds as it tried to regain its footing after having fallen. It stood up and saw the approaching player so it backed up a few paces so that the blade passed harmlessly in front of its snout. The boar snorted and charged towards the player, swinging its tusks from side to side as it tried to land a blow on the player. The player was easily within its range but the boar had not expected the sudden dive by the player as it tried to escape the attack. The boar's tusks cut into empty air, dealing absolutely no damage, and it squealed loudly, enraged by its miss. The boar turned on the player and charged forward, intent on piercing the player with its tusks while it was on the ground.

Nathan watched as the boar charged towards him and readied himself for a dive. As the boar closed the extremely small distance between them he dove to the side, out of reach of the tusks of the boar and into safety. Nathan hit the ground with a soft grunt, the wind knocked out of him. Hearing the squeal and more thundering steps Nathan rolled over and saw the boar bearing down on him. Nathan swung out with his rapier, hoping that he would hit the boar and deter it from attacking him through the pain. The blade turned a brilliant red and caught the boar on the tip of the snout, making two diagonal slashed across the tip of the pig's nose. After the blade cut through the pig Nathan rolled to the side some more, hoping he had done enough to not get hit by the boar.

The boar pressed on towards the prone figure in the grass, intending to trample the player under its hooves and heavy body. As the boar approached the player quickly there was a sudden glitter in the light as the player's blade quickly slashed it in a V. The blade turned a bright red and caught the boar on the face, causing it great pain and enraging it further. Not deterred at all, if anything more intent on killing the player, the boar bore down on the player. The boar's hooves trampled over the player, crushing the player under its weight. Continuing on the boar made a small distance between it and the player, leaving the player lying in the dust as it dealt with the severe damage which he had just suffered.

Nathan was in mid-roll as the boar came down on him. The pain was sudden and indescribable. He felt each impact of the hoof as the boar's heavy body pressed down against him. He was sure that if this were real life he would have many broken ribs and that he was lucky to be in a game. Once the weight was gone Nathan groaned loudly, noticing that his health bar had dropped quite a bit. That was to be expected but still, that was a significant drop. Nathan slowly picked himself up off the ground and retrieved his sword. The boar by then had already turned around and was charging towards Nathan once more. Nathan side stepped the charge, hopping that it was far enough, and swung out at the boar, missing it just by a couple inches. Nathan frowned a bit as he saw the boar's tusks coming at his side and hoped that he had stepped far enough away.

The boar turned around after its trampling and saw the player was just now picking itself up. The boar snorted and charged forward once more, enjoying the off-balance of the player. The boar closed the distance between it and the player, the player now standing, and saw another glistering of light as the blade once more swung out at it. This time the boar stepped slightly to the outside of the blade, getting just out of its reach, and then stepped back in and swung out with its tusks. The tusks of the boar caught the player in the side, making a large gash in the player's side as it tore through the pixelated body. The player cried out at the pain as the boar barreled past, and partially through, the player.

Nathan watched in despair as the tusks caught him in the side and tore through his body. He cried out in pained and watched as his health bar dropped down to half. Things had suddenly gone from boring to dangerous as the boar landed to solid hits in a row. Almost collapsing from the pain Nathan swung up with his sword, creating a vertical cut up the boar's side as it passed him. He saw that the health bar dropped barely any, the tough hide of the monster having absorbed a majority of the blow. If things kept like this then the battle would be pretty one-sided. After the boar passed by completely Nathan chanced a glance down at the bright red spot where the boar's tusks had passed through. Quickly he brought his eyes back up to the boar which had turned on its heels, squealing loudly, and charged forward.

The boar pivoted towards the player from where it stood and began another charge. It began squealing, the stinging pain from the last blow from the player annoying it further. The boar charged forward quickly, easily closing the distance in a few paces and bearing down on the player once more. The player dodged to the side and the boar snorted derisively and began to barrel past the player, leaving its side completely open to counter attack unintentionally. It lashed out with its tusks in a last-ditch effort to make the player back off and mess up his attack.

Nathan stepped to the side of the boar's charge just as it came past him, narrowly missing the initial attack. Then Nathan noticed the boar begin to swing its head side to side so he backed off a bit more so that he was still out of reach of the tusks as the boar went barreling past. As he backed away a bit he swung his rapier up once more and created yet another shallow cut in the boar's thick hide, inflicting marginal damage at the most to the mob. He frowned a bit as he regained sure footing and watched the boar carry out its momentum. This was going to take a while at the damage rate Nathan was doing. He really needed to get some better weapons. With a glance at his health bar he realized he needed some armour too. Everything needed an upgrade or else he was not going to last too long.

The boar turned on the player and ran forward once more, running directly towards the motionless player. The boar put some extra speed into this charge, going just a bit faster than all the previous charges. This change in speed apparently caught the player off guard because the boar's tusks caught the player's side once more as the player tried to side step. The dodge had come just a hair of a second too late, allowing the boar to make contact with the player. The tusks gouged out another red spot on the player's body and his health bar dropped significantly closer to zero, danger of death closing in.

Nathan watched as the boar came charging in at him. There was something different about this charge but he could not quite tell what it was so he waited as he usually did. When the boar was almost upon him he stepped to the side as he had before and it was then that he realized what was different. The boar was running just a little bit faster than the previous times. Nathan closed his eyes right before the tusks hit him and yelled out in pain. He was knocked to the ground by the spinning blow and opened his eyes, looking up at the sky now rather than down towards the boar and over the plains. He noticed that his health bar was dangerously low and he was not entirely sure if he could inflict the damage to finish the boar off before the boar finished him. Nathan picked himself up, disgusted with himself. He was going to have to run if he were to ensure his survival. With a withering glance at the boar, which had already turned and was almost bearing down on him again, he stood and began to run.

The boar turned around as fast as its momentum would let it only to see the player still laying down. Once again the boar charged at the prone figure, intent on finishing this quickly. As the boar closed the distance the player sat up and made a glance towards the charging boar than stood and ran. The boar pushed itself faster and harder, wanting to catch up to the player. Little by little the player made distance from the pig though, the boar's stubby little legs able to obtain great speeds but the player's legs able to go faster. At this point there was little the boar could do to catch the player. The player seemed as though he would escape without a final injury.

Nathan ran and kept on running. He didn't look back to check if the boar was right behind him or a few kilometers away. He just kept running. At first he heard the thunderous footsteps of the boar's continued charge but slowly they seemed to die away. Nathan got his hopes up, feeling survival's warm embrace coming closer. That was until he tripped. Nathan was running at a full sprint and his foot got caught up in a tuft of grass. The consequences were immediate and devastating. Nathan fell to the ground, a dull pain erupting in his ankle. He picked himself up off the ground and as he did so he heard the thumping footsteps of the boar as it bore down on him still. Nathan quickly began running again desperate to escape.

The boar continued on its charge, chasing the player as far as the player could run. Even when it seemed that the player would escape the boar kept running, intent to catch and finish its prey.  It kept on running and ran even harder when it saw the player fall to the ground. It caught up to the player as he stood up and lashed out with its tusks, catching the player in the back and leaving a large red gash of pixels as a mark on the player. The player had stood up and began running when the blow landed. The blow sent the player flying forward and almost falling to the ground so the boar pressed on with its advantage, intent to finish this once and for all.

Nathan took one step and then there was a searing pain in his back. He felt like someone had gouged out his backside and torn his backbone out that is how bad it felt. He watched as his health dropped too close to zero, well into the red now. His life flashed before his eyes, all the wars and conflicts he had seen and the life of loneliness. It was not a pleasant life that he had lived but it had been his and he was not ready to lose it quite yet. The blow sent Nathan reeling and he almost lost his balance and fell. However, he recovered and turned around. Escape was not an option anymore, he had to finish fighting either way it went. He gripped the handle of his rapier and faced the charging boar, shaking with fear. As the boar closed the distance Nathan took a few steps forward, bringing the boar and Nathan within centimetres of each other. Tapping into the last of his reserves Nathan tapped into the sword art, wanting to use Rip Ravine one last time if possible. The blade of his sword glowed a brilliant red and Nathan followed the system, his blade procedurally climbing up and then falling down in a diagonal and then repeating the same to create a red V on the boar's head. Nathan watched as the boar froze, its tusks within millimetres of piercing his stomach. Then the pig exploded and Nathan let loose a loud sigh of relief. He collapsed to the ground, on the verge of crying with the relief that had overwhelmed him. That had been way too close and Nathan never wanted to go through that again. He picked himself up and closed the window that notified him of the boar hide he had received. Time to return to the merchant with his new boar hide.

Nathan turned and walked through the tall grass, still shaking from that close encounter. That had been really close. Literally a scratch away from death. He looked up at his health bad and shivered. He really needed that armour and weapon now for he had been spooked. Slowly he ambled on his way through the grass and towards the city gates a little lost in his thoughts. He thought about the father and mother he almost did not get to see again. But that is where it stopped for him. He had no one else to go back to. He had always been an outcast. He was that one kid who was always left out because of the look in his eyes. He had lived a lonely existence, partially by choice and partially because of his past. If he was so lonely why did he fight so hard then? Why did he fear death when life held nothing for him? That was a hard question to answer but he was not going to just deny himself the right to live. If anything by living he had another chance to start over, to make some friends. That would be his first action upon getting out of this game he hoped. To find some people with which he could hang out with. Nathan looked up at the looming gate over his head and passed under it, back into the Town of Beginnings. Back into safety.
