[SP-F6] An Odd Reflection <<The Gemini>> .:COMPLETE:.

Recommended Posts

Nathan was walking about, just exploring the various floors. He had become accustomed to wandering about after a day of working on his shop on the first floor. Business was slow since he had started up and he had decided to spend all his free time just exploring some of the higher floors. Generally he tried not to engage enemies who he knew would be really strong and had been successful so far. As he explored the floor he found that some of the fibres he was finding he thought would make wonderful garments of sorts, maybe some gloves or something, so he started looking for material plants. As he walked down he kept looking from side to side, scanning the roadside. As he was looking down he noticed a plant and quickly turned to it. With a smile he bent down and harvested, another piece of flax being added to his inventory. He was in need of mats and it was good practice for him to be able to identify the materials he used.

After picking up the piece of flax Nathan stood up and, after a brief glance around for anymore materials, kept on walking. He walked down the road that he was travelling on, still looking from side to side in search of materials. He did not notice the figure approaching from the distance, his eyes intent on finding anymore materials which he could harvest and take back to his shop. There was a certain tranquility in devoting one's time to such a task, there was little risk of death and it was meaningful in the long run as the materials were used to make new items. So far he had greatly enjoyed getting a job and learning all the various small actions he had to do in order to keep the place running. His eyes noticed something in the corner of his vision and he turned his vision, stepping forward towards what he thought he saw. Upon further inspection though he noticed that it was truly nothing, just another blade of grass.

As Nathan bent down to the to inspect the grass the dark figure which he had not noticed closed in on his crouched form. The dark figure just stood silently over Nathan, waiting to be noticed. After the inspection was complete Nathan stood up and looked forward, utterly shocked to see someone standing in front of him. He jumped slightly and took a few steps back, the ominous silence from the figure spooking Nathan a little. Nathan could not help but stare for a bit before he was able to stammer out, "Well, hello there. If I may ask, who are you?" The dark figure gave a smile, his teeth unnaturally white. With its hand it made a gesture towards the fields which lead to the dark jungles, indicating it as though they were its home. "I am but a humble traveler of the sixth floor. I go about seeking new challenges and well... You seem like a challenge I want to take." Nathan looked at the figure, confused and grabbing the hilt of his new rapier, Bloodletter, gently. This was too close to the speech of a PKer for his tastes. "Excuse me?" Nathan asked. The dark figure laughed deeply at this and shook its head, as though belittling a child. "Oh, no worries. I will not just kill you. I believe I want to challenge you to a duel. If you do not wish to accept then that will be that." The dark figure swiped its hand down, accessing its menu and soon after a small message window popped up in front of him. It was an invitation to a duel which was to the death. Nathan looked over the figure, suspicion growing. He could not see any weapon but that did not necessarily mean the person did not have something at the ready to use. Hesitantly Nathan reached forward and hit the okay button. He was not entirely sure why but he hit it. Maybe it was just a desire to try out his new sword.

The dark figure nodded and walked back a bit as the thirty second countdown clock popped up and started ticking down. Nathan cast a glance up at the health bars above the clock. He saw his own which was labelled "Creius" and next to it he saw the name "The Gemini." "Such an odd name," Nathan thought as he considered it but then there was a small ruckus. Quickly he brought his gaze down, the clock around twenty now, and was shocked to see the figure convulsing slightly. After a few seconds of the convulsions there was a bright light from the figure, causing Nathan to look away. When he looked back it was like looking in a mirror. There, about twenty metres away, stood a Creius look alike. It even was wielding Bloodletter, a concern of its own. He wondered what else the figure had copied from him. Skills? Enhancements? HP? Mitigation? He was not entirely sure but whatever it was he was stuck in the fight now. He would have to fight to the death with this thing. The clock counted down and Nathan pulled his rapier out, the figure mirroring his moves, and put its tip in the dirt like a duelist would before a one-on-one combat. He began to take deep breaths as he watched the clock slowly tick to zero.

Nathan licked his lips anxious as the countdown clock slowly went down. He had not yet dueled and he was really hoping that his first would go well. Second by second the clock approached zero and once it did the first contact happened in a second. As soon as the countdown read zero both Nathan and The Gemini flew forward, towards each other with their rapiers raised. Both swung out at each other, both rapiers glowing red with the linear sword art, and the two rapiers collided in mid-air, blocking the blows from landing as both Nathan and The Gemini grappled each other. The Gemini still wore that creepy white smile as their faces were within centimetres of each other. "I will kill you nice and slow," it said quietly and let go of Nathan's arm and pushed him back, disengaging the two.

Nathan stumbled backwards, sent reeling by the violent shove of The Gemini. Nathan almost lost his balance which would have resulted in him falling to the ground, definitely not the way to win a duel. The Gemini bellowed with laughter and darted forward, its blade glowing red once more with a sword art as it closed on Nathan. Nathan feebly slashed out with his sword and just barely caught the tip of The Gemini's glowing sword, sending it off course by millimetres. Nathan fell to the ground now and rolled to pick himself up off the ground. Already doubt swam into his head and he violently shook it away. He could do this, he just had to stay focused. Nathan gripped his hilt tightly and then relaxed the grip, preparing for the next attack of The Gemini, who was already laughing loudly as it ran towards him.

Nathan watched the laughing fool who was pretending to be him with disdain. He would conquer this man and move on about his merry way. Once more The Gemini's blade grew a bright red with another sword art, the sheer number of these sword arts just amazed him, Nathan wished he could pull of this many. As The Gemini grew closer Nathan prepared to parry off its attack and watched as the faked Bloodletter came from above, probably imitating the Above sword art. Nathan flicked his blade up, pushing The Gemini's blade away and knocking him off balance as Nathan stepped into the attack. The Gemini took a step back, well off balance at this point, and offered Nathan the perfect chance to attack. Nathan raised his sword up, the blade growing the brilliant red of a sword art, and used his usual attack, Rip Ravine. In quick succession, two diagonal slashes came down and created a large via upon The Gemini's chest. Nathan watched as its health bar dropped quite a bit, almost to half from the one blow. Just a few more hits like that and this guy would be mincemeat.

Nathan smiled as he watched the imposter reel back under the damage. After taking a few steps back The Gemini looked down at its wound and began screaming, both at Nathan and the wound. "You insignificant swine! How dare you injure me!? I will rip your bowels out and shove them down your throat for that!" With that lovely image The Gemini rushed forward, its Bloodletter glowing a brilliant red while the wielder screamed bloody murder. Nathan prepared himself for the enraged attack and rushed forward, meeting The Gemini in the middle. Both blades flashed forward, glowing a brilliant red with the Linear sword art, and both blades pierced the opponent. Just as the Gemini had promised, his blade caught Nathan in the lower abdomen, almost below his stomach. Nathan had caught the Gemini in the shoulder. Both of them stood there, enduring the pain of the piercing swords. The difference between the two though was that, even with the rather insignificant damage of the swords, The Gemini's health bar still continued to fall well past the point where Nathan knew it was his sword doing the damage. The Gemini pulled itself off Nathan's sword screaming in pain at the bleed effect which had been applied and Nathan watched in shock.

Nathan watched the health bar just keep on dropping, quickly approaching zero as the bleed from Bloodletter took its deadly toll. The Gemini screamed at him, any façade of humanity now lost to insanity. The Gemini rushed forward, its blade glowing a bloody red, and brought its sword in a horizontal slash at Nathan's hip. Nimbly Nathan backstepped out of reach and then darted forward just in time to pierce The Gemini in the heart with his blade, running him through. They were barely centimetres apart when The Gemini's health bar reached zero, a grimace going across its face before it froze and shattered into a million pixels. Nathan stared in disbelief at the pixels that floated past him, unable to comprehend that the thing he had just destroyed easily could have been human. His sword fell to his side as he stared, a bit wide-eyed at the pixels. He had never heard of such a power in players, the ability to adopt another's face. He did not understand what was happening until a window popped up, informing him of the completion of <<The Gemini>>, a quest which granted him the 'Concentration' skill. Nathan smiled and hit the accept key, glad he survived the quest duel.

Nathan looked at the surrounding area, still in a bit of shock from the sudden quest duel. He noticed it was getting late though so he should probably head back to Amazon so he could teleport back to the first floor, and thus he began walking. As he walked he thought over the quest that he had just done, amazed by how easy it had been. This sword was really strong compared to what he had been using prior. His damage output had increased significantly. He smiled softly, "Well, that takes care of a weapon. Now just for armour." That smith he had gone to, Nikodemus_Blackwood he remembered, he had made a really good quality weapon. He would have to go back some time for any upgrades he might need. The armour he hoped he could deal with himself later once he had developed his tailoring skill a bit more. Something caught the corner of his eye and he turned towards it. Speaking of tailoring, he harvested the flax fibres and added them to his inventory. Every little bit helped.

After harvesting the material he stood up and continued walking down the road. He stretched his arms up into the air, yawning softly. Concerning his business he should try and find a way to get orders in. There really was not any reason for someone to come to his shop but there also was not any reason for him not to try and get some Col. Maybe an advertisement of some sort?... Though, he did not have anything that he could advertise. All that was on display was a shirt and a dress, not exactly wonderful merchandise right there. He sighed as he realized just how long of a journey ahead of him he had to becoming a worthy tailor. He knew of the master tailor on one of the higher floors and knew that people would go to her first before him most likely. Not that it would matter to him, he would struggle on. Until he had customers he would have to just farm and quest a whole bunch... Just like he had been today.

Nathan shook his head clear of the daunting task. All he could do was focus on what he could do and what he could do right now was find some more materials so that he could make the products that would bring customers. He brought his eyes back to the ground as he searched for the small fibre plants that gave him the soft materials that he needed for comfortable clothing. No matter how much he searched though he just was not seeing anymore usable plants. After searching for a few minutes he brought his eyes off the ground, scanning around him for any potential danger. He did not want anyone else sneaking up on him like The Gemini had.

After he searched his surroundings he looked up at the artificial sky, trying his best to think of something to think about or do. He would go and try to fight a mob of some sort on this floor but he knew that if he ran into one he would be slaughtered by it. He stood little chance against such high level enemies without help of some sort so his best tactic there was to just avoid them. Therefore, all he could really do was think or search for more materials. As he thought about materials his eyes fell back to the ground, making another cursory glance over the surrounding grass. During this cursory glance one plant caught his eyes and he went to it with a smile. Bending over he harvested it, adding yet another material to his inventory.

After harvesting this plant he stood up and went on his way, eyes scanning the roadside for more plants to harvest. It was a pleasant little task to focus on and he was amazed to find how easily he could get lost in it. For instance, that NPC had been able to walk up behind him and he had not even noticed. He was going to have to be far more weary in the future while outside of the safezone if he planned on surviving for long in this game. Nathan's eyes caught yet another harvestable plant which he approached and bent down to harvest, adding yet another material to his inventory.

With the new material in his inventory he kept walking on, knowing he was approaching the jungle town of Amazon since the large trees were now looming over him. It would not be long before he were within that jungle and not too much longer after that when he would walk into the town of women. When he had first entered the city he had been amazed to see only a whole bunch of women NPC's but then he thought about it some and realized the congruency the name held with the real world and it made a bit more sense. It was amazing how much this game could remind one of the real world at times. There was always that heartbreaking reminder that you had something outside of here, something important to go back to and the fact that many would not be returning. He shook the thought from his head and kept walking.

With that depressing topic on mind he could not quite shake the gloomy atmosphere he had put around himself. He did not have any particular ties to the real world, no friends and a distant family at most. That was how it had always been, before he had moved friends and family were dangerous and many times deadly so he had never bothered with relationships and it just stuck with him. Still, there was the natural push to survive this world and return. The innate desire of all men to survive and he could only think of how many innocent young children had been killed because a game creator had gone insane. It was the type of massacre which he would usually have expected from the militant forces from where he was born. Cold and heartless and without and mercy.

As Nathan walked down the road, the shadow of the trees beginning to swallow him as he entered into the jungle, he kicked a rock along with him. The thoughts had put him in a bit of a somber mood, thinking about his past and his present situation. They were tough subjects but you took what you could and pushed on, just human nature. He kicked the rock rather hard this time, sending it flying with the force of his agitation. The rock skittered down the road and onto the roadside, bringing Nathan's eyes to another harvestable plant. He walked up to bend over and harvest the plant and once it was in his inventory he went ahead and picked up the rock as well, deciding to hold it as a keepsake for now.

Nathan began tossing the rock he had picked up into the air, watching fly up and down in the air due to gravity. If there was one thing that was undeniable about this game though, it was realistic. Even though at times it provided that painful remembrance of the real world there were also times where one could just forget that this was all fake. The skies, the grass, even the food, he had not had any exquisite foods as of yet but he heard tales of master chefs who created foods from your childhood, but it all seemed so real. The fact that they everything could be taken as real was some plus but Nathan doubted very much he would ever cast aside that part of him that needed to return to the real world. He was sure that was the only thing pushing him on.

Nathan was well into the jungle by this point, rapidly approaching Amazon from his guess of his location. He looked around at the flora and fauna of the jungle, all the bright colours just amazing him. He could probably spend weeks exploring for materials and new mobs and just never run out of things to find. He smiled a bit, still tossing the rock since it had become a bit of a comfort toy now. Maybe some flowers to use as dyes to make beautiful dresses or some sturdy plants with a bark which he could turn into strong pants or protective shirts. There was bound to be an abundant amount of resources here. It made so much sense why the jungles of the real world were being depleted if they held even just a fraction of what this game seemed to provide. As he looked around he noticed a brightly coloured plant which he approached. It was beautiful so he brought his hand forward and harvested. He planned on making something magnificent out of that material. He turned back to the road, knowing that if he walked too far off of it there was a good chance he would not find it again.

Not too long after finding that plant Nathan walked into the jungle town of Amazon. As he walked into the safezone he was simply amazed once more at the exotic feel of this place. He could not help but look around as he walked down the dirt roads and looked around at the wooden huts and cloth tents which littered the town. It might not be much but it was theirs and it was beautiful. It just fit the location that they had chosen... Or, what Kayaba had chosen. Again, it was sometimes easy to just forget this was a game. Easy to forget that one man built and designed all this and then decided to make it a glorified death arena. He shook his head and walked towards the teleportation area of the town, not stopping to reflect on his thoughts anymore.
