[SP-F2] Hunting for Mats <<Earning a Living>> .:COMPLETE:.

Recommended Posts

Nathan had been using quite a bit of materials up and he recently had recalled that there was a random material drop from the <<Earning a Living>> quest which one could repeat the quest for so one day, after doing his daily attempt at crafting, he went ahead and closed up shop and headed down to where the old man had been who had given him the quest in the first place. After getting the quest once again he teleported to the second floor, wanting some hides from the second floor mobs and maybe a few plants which would make some clothing. Nathan walked down the streets of Urbus and eventually left the gates and began approaching the forests, his quest for materials beginning.

Nathan did not terribly mind his job, even though it was a bit of a bust at the moment. There was just some sort of tranquil sense that came with working at the materials and trying to extrude some sort of wondrous object from it. It was frustrating at times, sure, but in general he was glad that he had taken that quest and became a tailor. However, those materials which he had no use for at the beginning of the game quickly became very useful and he was now on short supply. Nathan had taken up the quest once more, the old NPC apparently happy to see him and happy to give him some more materials if he were to show some progress of his own. All Nathan had to do was find a few wolves and get some hides from them, an easy task he hoped. And that was what had brought Nathan to the second floor, a desire to further his career. The career meant a lot to him at the moment, it was a significant sign of progress. It required a bit of wealth to run, wealth that he would happily maintain, and it would hopefully one day provide more wealth as he became better at his job. There was also the making of wonderful armours, the pants he wore now were of his own make and he was quite proud of them. There were simply a whole bunch of aspects which made having a job in this world so appeasing, it just provided a true sense of being there and doing something. Nathan shook his head, which was apparently far up in the clouds at the moment. He had to focus, there were materials which he had to obtain. He laughed softly to his chiding and drew Bloodletter, the forests quickly coming down upon him.

Nathan walked into the forest and as soon as he was in its shadows he stopped and listened. The songs of birds could easily be heard as well as the rustle of the wind causing the leaves to flitter about. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, enjoying the feel of fresh, warm air filling his lungs. This world was simply beautiful at times and it just amazed him how much he enjoyed it here at times, even through the difficult parts. There was a short bark of laughter, the forest becoming silent at the foreign sound, and Nathan opened his eyes, shaking his head. This was no time to sit back and enjoy the scenery, he had a job that needed to be done right at that moment. Nathan delved deeper into the forest and listened intently for any sounds of fauna. After a few hundred metres he heard a soft growl to his left from behind and he turned. There sat a dire wolf, its eyes a bright red and filled with murder. Nathan gripped the hilt of Bloodletter tightly and waited for the combat to begin.

Nathan watched as the wolf snarled once more and then bolted forward from its cover in the trees. The wolf bounded in large steps towards Nathan and leapt towards him, jaws wide open. The wolf clamped down on Nathan's left arm, causing sudden pain as its teeth burrowed into his arm. Nathan raised his right hand and brought Bloodletter down on the wolf, the blade leaving a cut on the wolf's side as it passed through. The wolf let loose a whimper and released its hold on Nathan, leaving behind  teeth marks of red pixels where it had bit him. The wolf backed away quickly and began circling him, snarling the entire time as its beady red eyes kept a perpetual stare on its prey.

Nathan watched as the wolf circled him and balanced Bloodletter in his hands. Carefully he noted every single step, waiting for any tell of the coming attack. He had little experience with wolves but he knew that they could move very quickly. And just like that there was a sudden twitch in the beast and it was bounding forward. The wolf quickly closed the distance between them and leapt up towards Nathan, its jaws wide open once more. Nathan dodged the attack aimed at his neck and swiped his blade out towards the wolf as it landed on the ground but it quickly stepped away, snarling at the attempt of an attack. Nathan watched once more as the circling began. This would not do if it was simply going to be a back and forth circle, charge and dodge. He needed to get up close and stay up close where the wolf's speed would not help it.

Nathan closed his eyes and accessed the skill 'Concentration'. He wanted to make sure that this next hit would land so he focused all his energy on making it do so. He heard a soft snarl and a quick rustling of feet and with a quick opening of his eyes he saw the wolf bounding towards him once more. Nathan nimbly dodged out of the way and brought his sword up in a quick slash, cutting up the wolf's side and leaving another nasty. The wolf landed with a whimper and hobbled away, no significant damage done since its coat was firm but still enough to hurt.

Nathan pressed forward, trying to maintain the close quarters combat so that he would not have to worry about the wolf's speed so much. However, when he did the wolf snarled and backed away, Nathan's blade passing through empty air as the wolf quickly darted away and out of his reach. The wolf immediately turned and charged forward, snarling as it jumped up in the air and opened its jaws wide. Nathan narrowly dodged the attack, the sudden burst of speed catching him off guard and giving him just another example of why he had to mitigate the speed factor in this fight.

Nathan backed off a few paces as the wolf flew past him. In a hasty attempt Nathan swung out with his sword at the beast, hoping to be lucky to hit the fast monster. The wolf flew by too fast though, one second in front of Nathan and the next not, so Nathan's blade easily missed the wolf's flank. The wolf landed with a snarl and immediately turned and charged forward, jumping for Nathan's throat once more. Nathan stepped to the side and backed off a bit, breaking the engagement so he could catch a small breath before he was overwhelmed by the relentless attacks.

Nathan took a few steps away and watched as the wolf turned towards him, still snarling in apparent anger. Nathan redid the grip he had on Bloodletter and watched as the wolf darted forward. Anticipating another leaping attack Nathan slashed out at the air where he predicted the wolf would be in the next half second. The problem though was that the wolf did not jump, instead it ran on the ground and latched onto Nathan's leg. There was a loud whimper as it did though and it immediately backed away, a large portion of its health draining from the thorns damage of his leggings. Nathan smiled, the damage he had just received insignificant compared to the damage just dealt to the wolf. He raised his sword in another attempt to strike the beast.

Nathan raised his sword high and quickly brought it down on the wolf, Bloodletter easily slicing through the poor beast. It let loose a weak whimper and cowered a bit but then regained its pride and darted forward, fighting until the end. Nathan tried to back away before any attack could land but the wolf once more latched onto his leg, whimpering as thorns took effect and carried its health to zero. Nathan winced slightly at the pain but was relieved to see the beast explode into pixels nonetheless. A small window popped up, informing him of the material that he had gained. Nathan hit the accept button, the material going into his inventory. He was about to walk away when he heard more howling from behind him. Nathan turned and saw two more wolves standing behind him, eyes filled with hatred towards the one who had slain a brother.

Nathan watched as the two wolves slowly approached him, both spreading out wide so it was hard to focus on both. He tried his best to keep an eye on both of them but as they began to circle him it became especially hard when they were on opposite sides of the circle. After a few seconds of keeping his eyes off of one wolf it darted forward. He heard the footsteps coming up behind him so he turned, his back now to the other wolf, and slashed his sword out at it. The wolf leapt to the side out of harm's way but this provided the perfect opportunity for the other wolf. There was a searing pain in Nathan's arm as he felt a ripping sensation. Looking down he saw the wolf had grabbed his arm with its teeth and proceeded to jerk down quickly, leaving a large red gash where it had done the damage. Nathan stumbled backwards, away from the two wolves trying to gather some sense of how to fight two enemies at once.

Nathan did not have too much time to contemplate this because not too soon after he had stumbled backwards the first wolf darted forward once more. Nathan turned his attention to it, dodging the leaping attack with ease and bringing his blade across the flank of its body. Bloodletter cut through the beast easily and left a nasty mark on the wolf as the blade made its way through. While Nathan was in the middle of his attack there was a sudden yanking on his sword arm and another searing pain. He looked down to see that the second wolf, or whichever wolf it actually was, had come and bit his arm again as reward for having ignored it. Nathan cursed his luck and threw the wolf off his arm and stepped away, just trying to gather a breath.

As Nathan took a few steps backwards the wolf which had just bit him leapt forward once more, pressing its advantage. It dug its claws into Nathan's chest, shoving him to the ground and began snapping at him. Nathan received quite a few horrible bites before he was able to kick the wolf off of him and he quickly picked himself up. He saw that both wolves were quickly advancing on him so he took Bloodletter in his hand and tapped into the sword art system. He knew he had something that could hit both of them. He closed his eyes and after feeling the system he opened them and charged forward. Both wolves leapt in the air and Nathan's blade met them. First it made a cut to the left and then immediately it made a cut to the right, catching both of the wolves midflight and knocking them aside. Nathan took a few steps back and took a breath, watching as they cringed as Bloodletter's bleed effect began. Both the wolves turned on him and darted forward, continuing the attacks.

The two wolves pressed forward, working together as a team. They weaved in and out and thoroughly confused Nathan as he tried to decide which wolf to attack. The first wolf quickly latched onto Creius' arm, ripping a huge gash in it before letting go and backing away as Nathan turned towards it. The second wolf followed up while Nathan was distracted and went for a leg shot, leaving a huge gash there and dealing a significant amount of damage. Nathan winced at the pain but ignored it for the most part. As the second wolf darted away, standing next to his brother, Nathan darted towards them. He activated another sword art and slashed out horizontally and once again struck both wolves with one blow. The first wolf froze and shattered to pieces and the second wolf howled in misery at the death of two brothers. After howling it snarled and growled at Nathan, intent on killing this man.

Nathan watched the second wolf howl in misery and begin charging towards him, its health already dropping towards 0 from the bleed effect. The wolf did not seem to care though, its only thought was on vengeance. As the wolf came in Nathan slashed out with his sword, missing just barely as the wolf darted to the side, and watched as the wolf came in and bit his leg once again. This time though the thorns took effect and Nathan watched the wolf's health bar immediately plummet past zero, well beyond dead after that effect. The wolf whimpered, froze, and shattered. Just like that Nathan felt alone again in the woods. They had put up a good fight, even driving his health down quite a bit. They were proud hunters to the end and Nathan could appreciate that. There was a great sense in fighting such beasts that fought so hard in the name of family, if only he had such a cause. No, he was just out there to get materials and that was it. Slaughtering beasts and their families for the sake of profit. He sighed softly, it was just the way the world works. Nathan began to walk away until he heard another howl, this one deeper and far more menacing than the previous ones. Nathan slowly turned around and looked upon the new beast before him.

Nathan turned and saw a wolf. It looked just like the other dire wolves except for one factor, its size. This wolf was easily twice the size of the other wolves, an indication that it was stronger than the others as well and might take quite a few hits to go down unless he got lucky with the bleed. This wolf had hatred written all over its features, Nathan could see that this beast despised the ground that Nathan walked on. He had killed the wolf's pack so it was understandable and only meant Nathan had to be more prepared than ever for this fight. He gripped Bloodletter lightly and watched as the wolf darted forward, unbelievably fast for its size. Nathan barely dodged the train of teeth, claws, and fur which rushed at him. As the beast passed by Nathan slashed out with Bloodletter and felt the blade connect solidly enough but it also felt like that had barely made a dent in the wolf. Nathan danced away and prepared for the next charge, debating whether trying to stay close to a beast of that size would be smart. The wolf turned around and snarled loudly at Nathan, making Nathan's hairs stand on end.

The Alpha Wolf let loose a loud howl then charged forward once more, putting even more speed into the charge this time. Nathan swung his sword out but it only caught a glancing blow with the flat of the blade and the Wolf was on top of him. The Wolf took Nathan's leg into its mouth and snapped its head to the side suddenly and released. The pain from the bite was sudden and he saw his health bar drop a bit, thankfully his armour mitigated quite a lot of the damage most likely, but the landing was very dizzying. The wolf had thrown Nathan quite a few metres and Nathan had landed with a loud thump, all the air getting knocked out of him. It took Nathan a few moments to recover but when he did he looked up to see the wolf in pain as his armour's thorns took effect. Looking at the beast's health bar he was glad to see that it was depleted quite a bit. That just made things easier.

Nathan picked himself up off the ground and looked back over to the wolf and saw that it had recovered itself from the intense pain it had been in. The wolf turned on Nathan and began charging forward once more. Nathan watched as the wolf charged, getting used to the quick speed that it had, and timed his dodge perfectly so that there were centimetres to spare. Nathan raised his sword to strike at the wolf but the wolf, sensing Nathan to its side, darted to the other side so that it was out of reach of Nathan's blade. It turned on its paws and snarled at Nathan again, its eyes glowing with hatred as the two stared each other down from the small distance between them.

The two stared each other down for a few seconds and then the wolf darted forward. Right when Nathan had thought he was getting used to the speed the wolf had found some more. Faster than Nathan thought possible the wolf closed the distance and snapped his leg up once more. This time, instead of throwing Nathan, the wolf began to drag Nathan across the ground and then slid him a distance away. As Nathan was spun in circles he tried to his the wolf with Bloodletter but the constant violent movement made it hard to aim his blade and he could not connect. Once he was released and skidded across the ground he quickly picked himself up, hearing the pounding of the wolf's footsteps as they got closer.

The wolf whimpered and snarled at the same time and was sent reeling by the sudden and unexpected pain that Nathan had caused. It backed away, pawing at its snout as it dealt with the pain and Nathan began to approach, still holding his sword at the ready in case the wolf decided to attack. As Nathan got closer the wolf stopped nursing its snout and turned towards him, the hatred in its eyes intensifying and sending shivers down Nathan's spine.

Nathan took the initiative and charged towards the big beast. The Alpha Wolf snarled in reply and bounded towards its opponent. At the last second, right before collision between the two, which ultimately would most likely have ended with Nathan's demise, Nathan jumped to the side. As soon as he was clear of the wolf's claws and teeth he readied his sword art. His blade grew red, the wolf snarled, the system took over, and in half a second it was all over. Nathan landed lightly on the ground and the Alpha Wolf was sporting a red 'V' on its side. The wolf took a few steps forward then froze as its health bar hit zero, at which point it exploded into pixels, littering the sky with them. Nathan sheathed his rapier, certain that if he had taken out the Alpha Wolf then that must be the last remnants of that pack. Nathan hit the accept button on the materials that he had received now that he was out of combat and then took a deep breath, glad to be alive.

After taking a deep breath Nathan began walking through the forest. That had been a really long series of fights, one after another and he was glad that he had survived. He looked around the forest and decided that some passive gathering would be a bit appreciated after such intense combat. He walked up to a tree and searched at its base, inspecting some of the plants around the trunk. After a quick inspection he decided he did not like any of those so he moved on to the next tree and after inspecting that one he moved on and so on until quite a bit of time had passed. It was boring and repetitive and proving to be quite fruitless. While there might have been plenty of flora to use in a forest not a lot of it seemed suitable for tailoring. Maybe an alchemist would have a great time there but it just did not prove to be viable for him. Out of a couple hours time he only found one viable material to use and that was only a maybe. With a sigh he picked himself up and began heading out of the forest and towards the town of Delilah so he could teleport back home.
