[SP-F2] A Cry for Help <<Let There Be Light>> .:COMPLETE:.

Recommended Posts

Nathan had been walking around Urbus, a little bored due to a little lack of inactivity recently. He could always have gone and hunted mobs in the fields but that got old real quick when it was the same old monsters for the same old drops for a minimal amount of SP. No, Nathan was in the mood for a quest but he had no idea about where to look. As he walked through the streets of Urbus he began to hear some woman sobbing. Nathan followed the sound until he came upon a woman who was holding her head in her hands and was sobbing profusely. "What is wrong, ma'am?" The woman looked up at him, tiers in her eyes. "My daughter... She..." The woman broke out into more sobs and Nathan truly looked startled by the woman's lack of restraint. "Look, tell me where she is and I will go find her." The woman looked up at him, her eyes misty. "Would you really? Well, she is off in a cave outside of the city. I do not know where in the cave she is. She and her friend were attacked by flying monsters, as the friend put it. Please go find her and bring her back to me! I could not go on without her." The woman broke down into more sobs and a quest prompt came up in front of Nathan for <<Let There be Light>> and Nathan realized this might be the cure for his boredom. He happily hit the accept button.

Nathan walked down the streets of Urbus and went over his equipment real quick, just making sure that he had everything. Bloodletter? check! His Leather Coat? Check! His Abrasive Leggings? Check! And he had left Hector on the first floor to look over the shop while Nathan was off exploring so no need to check for him. That would be everything then so Nathan was about as prepared for this quest and whatever it entail as he would ever be. He set off at a brisk jog, quickly moving down the streets of Urbus and towards the city gates, hurrying out of the safe zone and on towards the cavern that was closest to Urbus, the most probably location of the missing daughter.

Nathan came upon the cavern and was instantly shocked. He had no idea why any child would want to play in such a place. His eyes were completely incapable of piercing the pitch black darkness that filled the entire cave. He blinked a few times, staring at the entrance for a few moments. Well, the fact that he could not see just boosted the probability that this was the cave which he was looking for. He wondered what type of monsters resided inside, some sort of flying creature apparently. He really needed to stop hesitating and just go inside. With a shake of his head Nathan forced himself to solidify his resolve and push on inside the darkness, feeling it swallow him as though it were its own type of monster.

The darkness felt oppressive, almost as though it were a tangible thing. Nathan felt as though he could just reach out and touch it, aggroing it so that he could fight it back. That was not so, of course. The darkness was just going to prove to be an obstacle during the quest. It was hard to hit something that you could not see so it was obviously a design portion of the quest. He kept blinking his eyes, hoping that his eyes would adjust to the complete darkness. That was not so however and Nathan just kept standing there in total darkness. If things were not going to get better then there was not point in just waiting around, he might as well press on. And that is exactly what he did. Nathan delved deep into the pitch black cave, leaving his doubts at the entrance.

The first sign of life in the cave came as a high pitched squeak, one that Nathan barely heard. The next was a flutter of wings. And after that... Well, Nathan quickly drew Bloodletter as something rather large flew at him and Nathan had no idea what it was.

It happened so suddenly. There was a huge fluttering noise that Nathan recognized as wings and a loud squawking noise that Nathan could not quite place. Then there was a huge body almost upon him and Nathan hit the stony floor instantly, the large body flying over him. Well, that was bound to be the flying monsters which had been mentioned by the mother. Nathan picked himself up and did his best to locate where this thing could be.

Nathan listened as the large beast turned on him and came flying back noisily. Using the noise to guide his aim Nathan prepared his Rip Ravine sword art, Bloodletter glowing brilliantly in the pitch black darkness, and when he judged the time right he swung. He guessed a little late because whatever the large flying monster was did end up crashing into him. Bloodletter did successfully land though, as Nathan felt by the two quick slashed and saw through the bright red V that was now marked upon his opponent's chest. The monster's health bar began to drop, almost to half, and Nathan got to see that the beast was called a Giant Bat.

Nathan listened as the giant bat flew away, having taken severe damage. Then, after a few moments, he heard the bat coming back for him. This time Nathan was not able to tell at all where the bat was in relation to him and was caught absolutely off-guard when the bat slammed into his side and teared into it a little. Nathan winced but took no real damage from the bat. He did hear the bat squeal though as it took damage from the thorns enhancement. The giant bat was far gone by the time that Nathan pulled his blade up and was ready to fight, leaving him with no opportunity to attack.

Nathan listened as the bat disappeared once more into the darkness and his echolocation failed him once more. Nathan was able to hear the bat, just like the bat could hear him. However, unlike the bat, Nathan was not able to pinpoint where the bat was. Once again the bat slammed into Nathan and started tearing into him. Before too much damage could be done, though, the bat's health hit zero and it froze. A few moments later it exploded into pixels and Nathan noticed how he had received absolutely no drops from the fight, a slight disappointment.

Nathan delved deeper into the cave, the darkness somehow becoming even more absolute. He could feel it swallowing him and Nathan suddenly felt bad for the child, momentarily forgetting that it was only an NPC. It had to be absolutely terrified stuck down here with no light or escape. Nathan shook his head of the thought, he would find the girl and get her out of here, that was all that mattered. It was right then that Nathan heard something, a soft sound. He strained his listening, trying to catch the sound again. There! Once more it echoed through the cavern. It was the yell of a small child, the small child presumably. Nathan hurried on his way towards the direction of the sound, not being mindful of anymore potential dangers.

Nathan had no clue where the bat came from but it was somewhere in the dark obviously. All that he knew was that one moment he was running along and the next there was a sudden and violent shove from the back and a brief ripping sensation. The ripping sensation had been brief because the bat had suffered the thorns effect of Nathan's armour but still, getting ambushed like that was not a pleasant experience. Nathan picked himself up slowly and tried to figure out where the bat was so that he could attack it but it was already gone.

Nathan closed his eyes, no longer trying to see. He focused everything on two things, his ears and his blade. Bloodletter began to glow a blood red in the pitch black darkness and everything seemed to be given a higher sound level. Nathan could hear the slight rustling of the bat as it prepared to take flight and, when it finally took flight, the soft flap of its wings. He knew where it was coming from and exactly when it would reach him. Nathan unleashed the sword art and Rip Ravine and Bloodletter flew out and met the Giant Bat head on. The blow stopped the bat in mid air, the giant V on its chest making it falter as pain gave way to fear. It flew back a bit to roost and the <<Concentration>> skill wore of for Nathan, leaving him blind and deaf once more.

Nathan could not hear anything compared to how heightened his sense had been during the time that Concentration had been in effect. It was not until the last moment that Nathan heard the bat almost upon him that he swung out and missed, only by centimetres but still not a hit. Feeling his blade whiff through the air he immediately dropped to the ground and heard the bat fly over his head, not able to cause any damage due to the sudden dodge of Creius. He smiled a bit and picked himself up. He was getting a bit better at this whole fighting in the pitch black darkness.

Nathan strained his ears as he tried to listen for any sound that might betray the Giant Bat's location, the silence slowly wearing at his ears. There were just a few moments of silence and then he heard the slightest sound. Immediately he prepared Rip Ravine and slashed out with it, his blade hitting something and leaving yet another large V on the body of the bat. The bat let loose a squeak and collided with Nathan, letting loose another squeak as it took even more damage from the thorns effect. As it flew away Nathan noticed that its health bar was almost completely drained.

Nathan, once again, just stood there in the darkness as he waited. He could not hear anything but the occasional rustling that betrayed no information about the bat's whereabouts. So Nathan just sat there extremely tense as he waited for the attack to come. Almost too late did he hear the bat coming upon him. He swung out with Bloodletter but was more intent on dropping to the ground to avoid being hit than he was on hitting the bat. His blade passed harmlessly below the bat and the bat passed harmlessly above his head once more.

Nathan picked himself up off the ground and turned around, hearing the rustling of wings already upon him. Nathan realized that the bat had just turned around to try and attack its prey while it was off balance. Nathan, however, was no normal prey. He darted forward, towards the sound and thrust his rapier forward. The bat squealed as it pierced itself upon Bloodletter and it froze about half way down the length of the blade. It exploded into pixels on his blade and immediately a small window popped up, indicating Nathan of a material drop that he had gotten from the bat. Nathan hit the accept button and then turned to the direction where he though he had heard the yelling come from.

Nathan pressed on, using the little girl's yelling as a guide through the dark cavern. It was useful because there were many forks in the path that, if the girl had not been screaming, he would have gotten lost down most likely. He walked through the darkness for a good half hour, the girl's yelling getting all the louder with every step. There was one point where Nathan just stopped bothering with his eyes and just shut them. It was amazing to Nathan how well that augmented his ability to detect sound and where it was coming from. After that point he was easily able to follow the sound of the girl and quickly arrive at where she was.

Nathan stumbled into a dimly lit room, the lighting coming from some iridescent mushrooms dotted around the room. The yelling was obviously coming from this room so Nathan looked around and, sure enough, there was the young little NPC. Nathan approached the young girl and poked her. "Ms., I've come to take you home. Your mother is really worried about you." The young girl looked up at Nathan, some tears in her eyes. "You are? Did you kill those big scary monsters?" Nathan nodded and the young girl smiled and jumped up on Nathan, a movement that Nathan was by no means comfortable with. With a sigh, he accepted his fate and turned around and exited the room, the little girl chanting, "Off to mommy," all the way out of the cave. By the time they exited the cave Nathan was already wondering if there was duct tape in Aincrad which he could use to shut her up as she babbled on about her adventure in the dark cavern.

When they finally exited the cave Nathan was so relieved to see the sun, and so was the girl. The little girl was so excited that she jumped off of Nathan and squealed as she danced about. Nathan watched her for a few seconds and then indicated for her to come to him so he could easily keep an eye on her. Nathan may no have danced around like the girl but he was pretty excited to see the sun. After having been stuck in that cave for even a small amount of time had been really disturbing, the inability to use his eyes had really thrown him off. No matter though, he was out of there and there was nothing to worry about anymore. He took the small girl's hand in his and began leading her down the road to Urbus.

If Nathan had gotten annoyed by the little girl on the trip out of the cave then he positively thought he would go ballistic on the trip back to Urbus. The NPC girl decided to keep running off the road into dangers, dangers which Nathan had to go save her from, and then act like she did nothing wrong. This persisted all the way back. Then there was the talking. It was as though she did not know how to breathe unless she was talking. The words were nonstop and eventually Nathan thought his ears were going to rot off. This, of course, exemplifies why Nathan tended to not get along with parties. He did not really enjoy listening to others just babble on.

They finally arrived in Urbus and Nathan was happy to see the city come up before them. The girl become more excited, albeit quieter as she respected the peace of others. The little girl pointed out all the shops she loved going to, mostly pastry and dessert shops of course, and where her and her friends would play on pleasant days. All of this reminded Nathan of just how much detail had been put into this game. It was just absolutely baffling at time. The girl kept this up, acting completely like a normal seven or eight your old would in a populated area. Nathan simply walked and wondered what kind of thought process went into making such a realistic AI that it could almost perfectly represent real life humans.
