[SP-F9] Taking the law into ones own hands. <<Bandit Camp>>

Recommended Posts

Having spent the day around Floor 7, Nikodemus was wasting his day away awaiting news from the Frontlines. He expected some new customers would be popping in once the next Boss room was found. Keeping mainly to himself, he spent the day wandering around the town of Nimbus. While standing in the merchant district, Nikodemus noticed eyes upon him. A man dressed in armor with a sword at his hip was watching intently from across the way. Deciding to find out why, Nikodemus began to make his way through the winding streets of Nimbus. As he did, he noticed the heavy thud of mailed feet on the stone walk. Coming around a corner into an alley that he knew had a branching side door leading into an inn's back courtyard, Nikodemus slid into the shadows of that opening and waited. The mailed footsteps grew louder until finally the armored man passed the passage way without seeing it. Stopping just down the alley, he was scratching his head when Nikodemus slid from the side alley and cleared his throat.

"Why in the name of Zandru's nine hells do you follow me?" Nikodemus' voice was hard as steel, and his eyes were icy blue orbs that spoke of the fury one would meet should they press their luck with the armored giant. The warrior coughed, trying to make sure his voice was even in tone and hid the nervousness he felt. "I am Kor, and I come from Floor 9. I seek the help of a warrior. We are plagued by Bandits and need them stopped. Please... will you help?"

With a suspicious quirk of his eyebrow, Nikodemus looked the man before him up and down. Gauging him to be telling the truth, Nikodemus relaxed his shoulders slightly and leaned against one of the smooth stone walls of the alley way. "How many bandits? I am listening." Prodding the man verbally, Nikodemus expected him to spin a long tale of a fabled bandit king who slew men in armed combat for naught but sport. He was disappointed to learn of the real incident that had unfolded on Floor 9. "There are 4 of them in a camp on the north edge of Floor 9. They are camped in the center of the floors best hunting grounds, allowing them to be at any of them at the right moment to hunt and gather materials, loot, and more. Worse, they do not allow anyone to come near. Those who try are put to the blade or fed to <<Wolves>> to keep them at bay from hunting the prey of the <<Bandits>> to much. I led a group of men to stop them, but we were not strong enough. Please... Will you slay them?" Listening to the tale, Nikodemus realized it was a simple quest that could be dealt with by anyone strong enough to be on the 9th Floor. Deciding it to be a good chance for him to kill some time, Nikodemus nodded. "I'll do it." As he spoke, the <<Quest Accept>> screen popped up. Clicking <Accept>, he took the quest and headed for the Teleport Gate.

Reaching the Teleport Gate, Nikodemus stood in the center and then teleported to Floor 9's main settlement,  Vulcan Village, and then exited the safezone immediately. Grumbling, he made his way through the fields in the sweltering head. He hated heat, and had no Idea how bandits could stand to camp here. Moving along the path, he kept his eyes open for the sighs of the Bandits. There were little tracks or anything to show their movements, and he knew they would be at range and unable to do much until he got close. He had no want to do things slow. He wanted to finish this quickly and return home. Moving through the sweltering heat, Nikodemus kept trudging along and hated the floor more.

Stalking along, Nikodemus came to one of the hunting spots that was hoarded by the Bandits. Looking about, he saw nothing of interest. Taking his time, he began to head once more in the direction of the Bandit camp. His eyes continuously scanned left and right for any signs of ambush, and his ears strained to pick out the sounds of anything living nearby. Moving still, he began to see the outline of the camp. Small barriers made of wood circled a 20 foot space that made up the camp. In the space, 4 tents made were pitched and sheltered behind the wooden barriers. In the center of them sat a fire pit. Approaching cautiously, Nikodemus could make out 4 people sitting in the camp. Two were playing some kind of gambling game, arguing among themselves, while one was using a dagger to cut a piece of wood to shape. The last sat sharpening a curved sword with a grind stone.

Coming to the camp edge, Nikodemus cleared his throat and made himself known. The four bandits leapt to their feet and drew weapons. Holding an armored hand up to calm them, even if only temporarily, Nikodemus began to spoke. "Hold fast gents. I come with the hope of peace. Let me explain." Standing there, the Bandits made no move to sheath their weapons, but neither did they make a move to attack. Nodding, Nikodemus began once more. "Thanks for the hold. I was sent here to, well deal with you lot. I am a reasonable man, and I assume you gents are reasonable too. How about we put this whole thing to an end and come to an accord. You guys can stay and hunt how ever much you want from the fields, but how about you allow others to come and hunt to. Maybe even it will bring traders who will buy from you. It would be Win-Win don't you think?"

Finishing, Nikodemus gave a smile. He had left his helmet off the whole time to allow the Bandits know his true emotions and earn their trust. Slowly, the leader lowered his curved sword and spoke after looking to the others and motioning them to do the same. "Of course. Come in and we can cement the details for this... Accord of yours." With that, they let Nikodemus in. Nodding, Nikodemus gave a thanks and moved past the first of the Bandits, coming side by side with the leader. Without word, the curved sword's hilt was brought in a round house strike to the back of Nikodemus exposed neck. Feeling the blow, Nikodemus grunted and fell, landing face first in the dirt. Laying there, Nikodemus felt the world aorund him become enveloped in darkness. Blacking out, he heard nor felt anything as the thieves began dragging him along the ground.

Coming to, Nikodemus felt the deep thrumming pain that shot through the base of his skull and into his head. Keeping his eyes closed and trying to not show signs of his consciousness, Nikodemus listened to the bandits. They had not killed him, which was good, nor had they tied him up. He could feel his hands and legs were free, and he had saw no pit nor cage upon approaching. Listening to the four argue, he couldn't help but curse himself inwardly for thinking he could resolve the issue peacefully. "No. We kill him. Strip him of his armor, stick a dagger in his rib, and leave him to the wolves!" One thief had advocated. "No no no! He will make the wolves fat and lazy. They will be to well fed to corner other foolish people who try to enter our lands. I say we toss him in the nearest magma vent!" A second was adamant about the plan. The third just muttered and bumbled his speech, as if drunk, and made no sense. The leader was the only voice Nikodemus did not hear. He was probably debating the course of action. Opening his eyes into tiny slits, Nikodemus saw that he lay a foot from a tent, and 5 feet from the nearest thief, one of the two who had gambled. He was the one who advocated the magma vent. The other who had been gambling was the thief who wanted to turn Nikodemus into a wheezing pile of wolf chow. The bumbler was the whittler. The leader stared into the flames of the camp fire, not listening.

Gazing through the slits of his eyelids, Nikodemus watched the bandits, None noticed him, and he shifted his gaze to himself slightly, trying to not move openly. He was still in his armor, his shield and axe lay beside him, propped against a wooden barrier. Calculating, Nikodemus figured it would take him a full minute to rise, grab his shield and orient it properly, then his axe and be ready for the first blow. Sighing inwardly, he gauged the distance between him and the Bandits. It would be about the same for them to rise and draw steel, then maneuver around and away from the tent and campfire for all but one of them. The closest thief would be on him in a matter of half a minute if he was quick. Being unburdened by heavy armor, he would be. Deciding there was nothing to be done but rise and fight, Nikodemus put his plan into action.

Rolling into a crouch, Nikodemus then stood and snatched his shield up in his left hand, pushing it into place with his right. By the time he had got his shield secured, the bandits had heard him, and saw him. Shouting, the leader rose like lightning and drew his sword. The others followed suit, drawing an assorment of weapons. The leader, bumble, and wolfboy had to make their way around the campire and slip past tents. Magma bandit did not. He gripped a large 2 handed axe and was near Nikodemus in two quick steps. Spinning in place, Nikodemus brought his shield before him as a weapon and drove the bandit back, snatching his axe from it's resting place as he did. Whirling around once more, he was armed and ready to face the four angry bandits before him.

Preparing to strike, Nikodemus moved forward and brought his axe across in a huge arc. The leader brought his sword up and caught the axe blade, then deflected it to the side. Growling, Nikodemus batted the weapons of the other three bandits away and moved back. Circling, the combatants kept themselves apart and were watching for an opening to attack once more. None showed, and the combatants had circled 180 degrees, putting Nikodemus closest to the camp fire and tents. Worried, he made sure he wouldn't be back into the flames or trapped into the cloth of the tents.

Once more, Nikodemus moved and tried to attack. He hoped his attack would cause the Bandits to turn or fall back, but they just dodged the axe and struck. Each blade hit his armor, and Nikodemus grunted. His armor absorbed the most of the damage, and his <Thorns> effect activated. Each thief got hit with a burst of damaging energy, and the struggled back and howled in pain. Panting, Nikodemus prepared himself to strike them, the hope he would be able to finish them off burning in his heart.

Angry, Nikodemus activated his Sword Art <Tomahawk Thrust> and hurled his axe. As it soared through the air, it hit each of the bandits and cut through them, wounding them greatly. As the axe finished hitting each of them, it returned to his hand and he caught it. Smiling, he leapt to the side and dodged each blade as the thieves tried to strike him. As they finished attacking, they moved back slowly and each combatant prepared to attack once again.

Once more, Nikodemus prepared a Sword Art. This one was his <Crescent Thrush> and he let it loose as he swung his axe. The curve of the blade soared through the air and hit each of the bandits, tearing through them and bringing their health down. Growling, he cursed and wished he had been better prepared. One each bandit had shook the damage off, they charged in and struck, their weapons digging into his armor hard. He was glad it held, and he forced them back using his shield. He had taken some more damage, but he would live.

Charging forward once again, Nikodemus growled and swung his axe. As he did, each bandit split off and moved, leaving their leader to block Nikodemus attack. As one, the bandits moved back in and tried to strike at him, But he ducked and then rolled out from the center of their trap and away. coming to his feet, he brought his shield up and swatted them back with his it. Once they were far enough back, Nikodemus took a deep breath and tried to relax.

Seeing an end in sight at last, Nikodemus prepared one last Sword Art. Once more, he let loose his <Crescent Thrush>. the energy soared out from his axe as he swung it, and struck each bandit. they had charged into it headlong and struck at Nikodemus as they did. Grunting with pain, he was happy to see they had once more activated his <Thorns> effect, and the pulse of damage tore through each bandit and turned them to pixels. Falling back, Nikodemus laughed and sat upon the ground. Breathing deeply, he looked about. Standing, he began heading back to town.

Moving along the floor, Nikodemus sighed. He had hoped he would be able to talk the bandits into resolving this peacefully, but they forced his hand. His mind replayed the event backwards and forwards, over and over again, trying to make sense of what went wrong and where. Growling, he cursed darkly and continued walking. His anger would subside and he would be able to report a success to the man who had hired him. Coming past some the main stretch of the plains of floor 9, Nikodemus found himself back in Vulcan Village. Entering the safezone, Nikodemus saw the armored warrior standing in the midst of the town waiting for him.

Approaching the armored warrior, Nikodemus gave a slight bow and then took a seat upon a bench nearby. The warrior moved over and sat upon the bench also, then looked at Nikodemus. "So, how did your quest fare? Are the bandits no longer a problem?" With a deep sigh, Nikodemus turned his icy blue eyes ontothe warrior and stared at him. With a single nod, he answered the question and then added the brief tale. "Yes. I came upon their camp, tried to reason with them and end the conflict with a peaceful resolution, and then when they attacked me and decided to kill me, I fought back and slew all 4 of them in combat. Their camp still stands, but they are gone. It is done."

Nodding, the armored warrior reached into his belt satchel and pulled a small pouch out. Handing it over, he smiled and then clasped the armored giants hand and shook it. "This is your reward sir. Thank you for dealing with those vile thugs. Now the fields will be safe for us and others who wish to hunt them." After that, the warrior stood and left. Within a second, the <<Quest Complete>> screen appeared and showed him having finished the quest. With a sigh, he clicked <<Accept Rewards>> and then sat there, staring at the town as life went past him.

As life on Floor 9 continued on as if nothing had happened. Nikodemus sat upon a wooden bench and debated what had happened. He hated the way it played out and wanted it to be different, even begged it to be so. Sadly it wasn;t and he was forced into the realization that he would once more be put in that situation sooner or later and would most likely have no choice but to repeat his actions. This did not sit well with Nikodemus, but he knew nothing could be done. The fact was that the Cardinal system was set to force the Bandits, and most likely other mobs, to only seek blood and combat. There was little to no chance any of them would be programmed to seek a peaceful resolution to any issues.

Warring with himself, Nikodemus felt his fragile psyche begin to bend at the strain of the madness within him. He was not happy with the facts of things. He knew how the world worked, and how the game worked, but he wished it to be different. He wished to be able to save lives, not always take them. To be able to reason with enemies and spare them, not be forced to always slay them, always showing no quarter. He was no trained solider, nor was he a normal person who could allow the events to slide past him as if they were not an issue. It was that path that led to so many becoming cold, and their lack of emotion led to them eventually becoming the thing they feared. He refused to become like the enemies, always seeking blood, never peace. He refused to become cold. He would help others, he would save lives, and he would keep his humanity.

With a plan firm in his mind, Nikodemus stood and set out. Heading to the teleport gate, he ran through the thoughts in his mind. He was now filled with determination and no longer full of regret or anger. He would help people, spare lives, and survive without becoming a cold human. He would keep himself as he was, and would escape this death game. Knowing of the recent events from the last boss raid, Nikodemus decided that if it had to start with him, then he would be one of the people to change and cause change to happen. Rushing to the stone step of the teleport gate, he shouted his destination, and within a blink of an eye was standing in Nimbus once more.
