About: History/personality

The Clearwaters family has a long history along the west coast. Success in business and noble pursuits. Money and privilege followed them wherever they went. It was into this world that Maybelle was born. Though while expectations were high for her siblings, as the youngest, May herself enjoyed an easy life. For much of her early childhood she was spoiled so rotten that 'brat' was a bit of an understatement. But unlike the "popular kids" who used that spoiled bravado to increase their social standing, May just used it to be alone, preferring the company of books, games, and swimming pools over real people. At least, until she met Him.

It wasn't exactly a relationship of equals, yet for the first time in her life she did not feel like the superior, in complete contrast to what their economic classes would suggest. For such a young, sheltered girl, it was love at first sight. At first it was an act fro her. Anything she could do to get him to like her. But eventually, and with no small level of influence, she began to change. Though their childhood they were "just friends" - though she did manage to get some hugs and even a kiss or two in - but through her persistence and their natural chemistry, come early High School they began to date seriously. An awkward experience at first, but they got into the swing of it quickly enough, and quickly grew closer than ever before.

By the time college rolled around she was finally an actual standing member of society, if still quite a bit spoiled, but her heart was in the right place. With Alphonse a permanent fixture in her life by then, college was a time to study, and work. She made quick work of throwing herself headfirst into every writing project she could find, from short stories to contests to roleplaying, and became more of a shut-in than ever before, practically living from her apartment and the computers within it. Even she will note that most of this time of her life flew by in a metaphorical instant. Nor that life changed overly much when they graduated, beyond sitting down with strict guidance from Alphonse to keep her focused, and writing a full novel. Followed by purchasing a house in celebration when it proved to be somewhat popular.

Gaming was always an interest of May's, but she did not adhere to it with the same passion and competitiveness that Alphonse did. With the advent of TI gaming, though, her interest was piqued, and it was with only a small amount of reluctance that she allowed Alphonse to drag her into the SAO project. Present during the launch hour and excited as could be, they shared one last real-world kiss before the words "LINK START!" changed their lives forever.

Appearance:

Tall, blonde, and devilishly gorgeous~ ...iiiiis what she wanted when she created Aurora. But thanks to Kayaba's little mirror trick, what she got was a very average girl. Standing an only slightly tall 5'7", with an average, slightly curvy build (with a quite generous bust and hips) that showed she took care of herself... to an extent, and sporting a pate of long wiry black hair. Her eyes are a dark, chocolate brown, a bit unfocused without her glasses, even though the Nerve gear corrects her vision in-game. Old habits and all that. Despite no longer having the blonde hair, she still takes a liking to the game's gold dye, sporting a shiny outfit whenever she can.

Virtues:

Book Smarts - With a Literature degree and a good number of published material - including a novel, the mildly famed horror thriller Behind Closed Eyes - it's not hard to say that May is intelligent. Especially when it comes to books. Sharp eyes hold a gaze that is constantly calculating and analyzing, allowing her to pick out a plot hole from a mile away, attuned and adept at countering every little twist and false climax. Along with the lack of restraint not to blurt out her deductions, watching shows with her can be... trying.

Energetic - May adheres to the theory of Play Hard Crash Hard, and when faced with social situations she is well known for compensating for her anxiety with overly energetic behavior. Covered by this mask of exaggerated, optimistic excitement - a Persona that she has taken to calling Aurora, after a superhero character in one of her short stories - it can be rather exceptionally hard to get to know the real May. But at least she'll do her very best to make you feel good while you try.

Altruistic - While she does have a few selfish bones in her body, for the most part May cares far more for the happiness of others than she does for herself. She has specifically chosen her career to be an entertainer, bringing light to the world through her writings. Combined with her struggles in social situations, this sometimes means it takes the firm hand of her fiancé to stop her from giving away all her possessions to the first person in need she sees, despite how much she would lament losing creature comforts later. Some might call it soft-hearted or even naivete, but her loyalty and dedication to such causes is what truly makes it Altruism.

Flaws:

Impulsive - A condition scientifically known as "Ooo, shiny!" May often has trouble focusing, and can be easily distracted by everything from an object of interest to several tangential thoughts at once. This has helped a great deal in building a lot of fantasy world lore in a short time for her stories, but tends to backfire when it comes to actually writing, resulting in far more short stories and online roleplays than actual novels. In more practical terms, even when her life was in danger upon being trapped in SAO, it still took her fiancé creating a list of highly detailed rules to get her to focus enough for basic survival.

Social Anxiety - Though she is capable of social interaction through the use of her exaggerated Persona, May is still an introvert through and through, and has a great deal of difficulty handling social interactions outside of familiar situations. If pressed beyond the range of her familiar dialogue, or especially if intimidated, she will quickly fall into frightened silence, losing control of rational thought and perspective and wanting only to run, hide, and cry.

Amorous - Between a privileged upbringing and a life-long partner willing to indulge in her more eccentric fantasies, May has grown up with practically no sense of sexual restraint. Her understanding of acceptable social behavior and appearance is more scholarly than practical, and many cracks in her knowledge come through when Altimeda is not keeping her in check. She has quite the impressive list of kinks and quirks, and even public play seems to bypass her social anxiety. While not exactly "flirtatious", she is easily aroused, and quite eager once that initial shyness has been broken through.

Relationships

Altimeda - Childhood sweetheart and fiancé. Theirs is a relationship of deep trust and mutual understanding born of nearly three decades together. May couldn't imagine a life without him, and can often take that fact for granted, especially when her introverted nature goes into full swing. No romance is without its bumps, and considering her bisexual nature and his tendency to be easily distracted by certain women the actual lines of their relationship have become quite nebulous and prone to threesomes, but seeing one without the other is still a distinct rarity.
