Full Profile

Background:

Ryuya wished he'd managed to snag one of the copies of SAO, but alas, he was unable to secure one.  Disappointed, he took comfort in the fact that he'd be able to to join in the second wave when more copies were available.  Imagine his surprise when a nondescript box appears on his doorstep containing a copy of the game along with the NerveGear to play it on.  There was no name on the label, only an address.  His address.  Confused, he called the delivery company to see if there had been some mistake, as someone had no doubt paid for this copy of the game, and did not receive it.  Four representatives, two managers, and even a district sales official confirmed: the order had been placed with instructions to deliver it to the address on the label.  Assuming that his address had been the mistyping of someone else's address, he asked them to contact him if anyone from an address that could have been mistyped by the customer as his called to ask about a missing delivery.

When launch day came and he still hadn't been contacted by the company, he resigned himself to the strangeness of life and booted up the game, soon finding himself stuck inside like all the other players.  Determined to make it out alive, if only so he can complain to customer service about delivering him someone else's death game, he fights to keep as many others alive until the end of the game as possible.

Personality:

Ryuya was never the kind of person to dwell on negativity, and his laid-back attitude about life and lifestyles makes him easily approachable and a good conversationalist.  Though he forms casual bonds quickly, stronger ones are forged much more slowly, and he is fiercely protective of his friends.  He is an ESTP on the Myers-Briggs spectrum.

Virtues:

Probity: Ryuya is honest, and won't pull any punches with advice or when asked his opinion.  However, he is not above using the "little white lies" we all stoop to when we don't want to hurt anyone's feelings or cause them any undue worry.  His sometimes brutal honesty can be off-putting, but he doesn't see that as harmful - if someone isn't willing to hear the truth about themselves even when they ask for it, then they won't be spending any more time with him anyway.

Blue Morality: Ryuya doesn't exactly follow normal social conventions, but leverages this to his advantage by being approachable and friendly to everyone.  His carefree attitude helps to put others at ease when talking to him, and strangely enough it helps to keep him grounded - he likes to see what he can "get away with", so to speak.  Though he presents himself as a free-spirited person, he actually does have his own code of rules that he follows to the letter.

Protective: Ryuya isn't one to stand idly by while his friends are taking hits, either physically or verbally.  Quick to come to someone's defense, he won't back down until things calm down.  This trait overrides any and all other decision-making processes: he will fight to the death to defend an innocent's life if he must, regardless of danger or circumstance.

Moxie: Ryuya has both a strong mind and an assortment of highly random information at his disposal.  Once he starts something, he is loathe to stop.  If a problem arises, he works quickly to find a creative and efficient way to solve it.  If someone tries to stop him, he will attempt to convince them to let him continue before resorting to more forceful methods, in keeping with his personal code.

Vices:

Cavalier: Ryuya could be described as a little too flippant about his odds of survival when performing certain activities.  He is more than willing to jump into unpredictable or dangerous situations without thinking things all the way through first.  This can get him into trouble, but if the reward is worth the risk in his eyes, then he's going to take that risk.

Tunnel Vision: Whenever Ryuya focuses on a task, everything else takes a backseat for a while.  this can be a benefit in combat, but most projects he undertakes have little to do with other people, causing him to become a recluse for a while.  This is a complete dichotomy from his normal personality, and while he'll apologize profusely when he finishes his project for any inconvenience, you'd be hard-pressed to get a sincere apology while he's working.

Vengeful: Ryuya holds a grudge like no other.  In the words of Fitzwilliam Darcy, "[His] good opinion, once lost, is lost forever."  Wrong him or his friends and he will make every effort to make your life difficult.  Not directly, though - he doesn't like starting fights or appearing to be the 'bad guy'; instead, he'll work behind the scenes to cause a myriad of little problems that add up to an annoying existence.
