[F11-SP] Way Over My Head <<Nature's Treasures>>

Recommended Posts

Symphony had never been to the Intermediate Level floors. She was only level 9, but she knew that she could probably handle just basic gathering. Though she more than likely would also try her hand at some hunting. She had always been the living-on-the-edge type. With her, she brought her familiar Cloak, a handsome and big, black raven. He cawed happily at the new floor. So many new places to explore. So many new things to see.

As the pair ventured into the middle of the town on this floor, they saw a giant cathedral. Symphony's jaw dropped as she was stunned by the architecture and design of the building. She wondered how music would sound inside... There it was, her musical past kicking in. She giggled to herself and skipped through town, joyful about the beauty surrounded her. However, she knew that she couldn't stay in town too long if she wished to find materials. After taking a quick look around at all the shops, she decided to head out and explore the wilderness outside of the Safe Zone.

Symphony walked around the area, enjoying the coolness in the mountain region. "Isn't this wonderful, Cloak?" she asked. Cloak cawed in agreement and played around in the air, flying between trees and diving to catch bugs in abundance in the air. As they walked along trails, Symphony spotted a crimson flower and picked it up to be used as a dye in her shop. She smiled. There was a lady bug on the flower. She held it on her finger and then lifted it up towards the sky where the beetle took off and flew to another tree. Up above her, squirrels played in the trees. They grew quiet when her raven companion flew over them, but they went back to playing when he passed. So peaceful, she thought to herself. So happy here. She might move to this floor once she had enough col to do so. If she ever earned that much col. She sighed, thinking about how her shop was failing. She had had only one successful customer in the past month.

As she was walking along, Symphony saw what she thought was a colorful feather on the ground and went to pick it up. But as she pulled, she felt resistance. So she pulled harder. Suddenly, she heard a loud screech and watched as a medium sized cockatrice reared its head out of the bushes. Immediately, she backed up and readied her blade. "Get behind me!" she yelled to Cloak. She didn't think that the larger bird would like a smaller bird in its face too much. Dashing to the side before the beast could react, she slashed the back of its legs and the backs of both wings. "That should make it harder for you to fly!" she yelled at the bird while laughing. The stupid thing had startled her, so she had decided that she'd make it pay. Besides, the beast didn't seem like it would let her leave peacefully after pulling on its tail.

Right after Symphony struck, the cockatrice reached out to beat her with its powerful wings. But she managed to dodge out of the way just in time and roll to safety. Cloak was blown back by the large gusts of wind that the beast created when it flapped its wings. He quickly found a sturdy tree branch to hang onto while the giant bird unleashed its anger. Meanwhile, Symphony braced herself behind a tree against the beast's mighty flaps. Geez, this guy is strong, she thought to herself while making note that she should be extra careful with this one. She had a feeling that if she got hit, she would take a bit of damage. She was still a lower level and could be taken out easily if she became to rash or risky. She looked over to see if Cloak was okay. He seemed to be handling the brunt of things quite well, but she could also tell that he was getting tired from holding onto that branch for so long. She looked back over to the cockatrice and decided that she needed to stop it from flapping soon so that her familiar would not get blown away.

It was decided: she would try to distract the beast so that Cloak could fly to safety. Quickly and suddenly, she made a mad dash for the giant bird, trying to slash at its feet. But the feet were armored, and her dagger could not damage them, so the bird merely turned its attentions onto her. Symphony did her best to brace against the gusts of wind coming from the cockatrice's powerful flapping wings, but she managed to still slide a few feet backwards. Luckily, she was not knocked completely off of her feet and into a tree or another hard object. Make note to write on cockatrice's powerful wing abilities later, she reminded herself. She liked to collect knowledge during fights of higher level creatures in order to help out newer and weaker players. Older, more experienced players had given her written knowledge and advice on these such enemies. Though she also noted that they had left the stats for the cockatrice quite barren and unfinished.

When the cockatrice took a moment to recover its energy from its prolonged attack, Symphony saw her chance. She dashed towards the cockatrice, who reached out with its beak to peck her. But she was quicker and easily dodged the attack. Around she went, dodging the beast's sharp claws, until she was behind the giant bird. "This is for being mean to Cloak!" she yelled as she stabbed her dagger into the back of the beast. Her blade entered deeply into it four times along its spine. She leaped away as the beast cried in pain and fell down to the ground. After a few moments, it got up, clucking and cawing angrily. It didn't seem to like what the woman had done to it.

Symphony turned to Cloak and smiled up at him. He cawed happily down to her, glad that she had saved him from the larger bird's attacks. "Just keep an eye out for openings, Cloak!" she called up to him as she turned back to face the enemy.

As she had turned to face the cockatrice once more, Symphony realized that the beast was upon her already. She tried to leap away, but the bird had greater speed from its charge, and it was too late for her to get out of the way. The beast picked her up with one claw and flapped into the air, where it threw down to the ground with a good amount of force. "Oof!" was the only sound that Symphony could make as she landed chest first onto the ground, the impact winding her greatly. After a few moments of gasping for air, she managed to push herself up and rolled out of the way of another attack. "Darn thing..." she muttered to herself as she coughed up a little blood and spit it onto the dirt to her right. "Alright. No more playing. Now things get real." She smiled devilishly.

Now, Symphony unleashed her inner thirst for blood and death as she her blade began to glow a bright, blinding red. A sick grin crossed her face as she charged towards the cockatrice, her blade readied in her right hand. As the beast lashed out with its beak to attack, she leaped over its head and came down, blade first, onto the bird's back. She ground her blade into the points between the bird's vertebrae, paralyzing the thing. Then she stabbed into its neck once, and its underside twice. She leaped off of the bird and watched it tip over, stiff from the paralysis. She laughed so hard at the sight that she had to clutch her side, amused that such a big mighty beast could be brought down by her, a small woman. Cloak looked down from the sky and cawed happily. He was grateful that the beast which had tried to hurt him was finally getting what it deserved. He swooped down a few times to get a good peck at the thing.

As she keeled over, laughing at the funny sight, the bird began to gain movement. She was too busy to notice laughing until it was right on top of her once more. But the thing was still a bit sluggish, so she managed to dodge out of the way easily. "Awe, did the big birdie not like when I paralyzed him?" she teased in a childish voice. This made her laugh even more. The bird grew even angrier and charged at her once more, but she nimbly dodged again, reaching out to try and stab him, but missing. "Awe, and now your anger has made you quicker." She looked down at her dagger. "Eh, I guess it wasn't too much of a miss anyways. But I won't miss next time." Her eyes glowed and had a reddish tint to them in the light. She was enjoying this hunt greatly. But her energy was running low, and she knew she had to finish this in the next turn or so.

As the flame in her heart and eyes grew, she charged her blade once more. It glowed red in the shadow of the trees, and she ran her hand across the hot blade. "Now, it's time for you to get hurt really, really bad," she said with a smirk. She knew this next hit wouldn't ruin the cockatrice completely, so she would be able to have a bit more fun with it until it was all over. She waited for the cockatrice to lunge at her once more. Then she dodged and leaped up and onto its head, slashing right on the back of its neck. The paralysis effect on her weapon took hold of the beast once again as she leaped off and onto the branch of a tree, where she could watch the thing tip over from a high vantage point. Of course, higher in the air, the motion of the giant bird falling over just made her laugh harder. She clutched the tree with one hand as she wiped tears from crying so hard off of her face with the other. "Ooo boy, now that is a sight to see."

At this point, the cockatrice had gotten used to the effects of the paralysis, so it recovered much quicker than Symphony had expected. It caught her unguarded as she was laughing in the tree, unaware that the beast had even gotten up as she was blinded by her own tears of laughter. The beast was enraged and quickly knocked her out of the tree with a flutter of its wings, sending her backwards about 10 feet and into the trunk of another. Symphony lay, back against the tree for a moment her head down. When she looked up, pure anger and a hunger for blood glowed in her eyes. "Now that. Wasn't. Funny," she said as she stood up slowly, blade clenched in her hand. "Now, your death is going to be slow, bird. I'll make sure of that." She grinned as she wiped her blade with her shirt. "I want it clean for when I shove it in your skull."

Blind with anger, she charged at the beast. In its own fear, the cockatrice gave one final kick and flung Symphony into the dirt a good 20 feet away. She got up quickly, glaring at the beast. "You think you can do that and get away with it!?" she yelled. She sharpened her blade against a rock next to her. "No. You won't." She walked slowly towards the beast, blade hanging in her hand, anger in her voice and eyes. Now she was ticked off.

Even Cloak, far up in the air, could tell that his partner was enraged. She didn't like pain, and when she was hurt, it only made her angrier. He knew it was a dangerous situation, so he stayed away, landed in a tree, and waited for her to go berserk on the poor cockatrice. As she got closer, the cockatrice began to quiver in fear. It sensed a powerful energy coming from the small woman in front of it.

And the cockatrice responded to its fear by running. Off through the trees it went, its large body moving the lighter trees to the side and breaking branches. "Hey! Get back here!" Symphony yelled after it. "I'm not finished with you..." She began to chase after it, calling out to Cloak. "Follow me, Cloak! Don't get lost." She raced through the trees, chasing after the beast until she reached a clearing. Out of breath, she rested against a tree and downed a canteen of water, wiping sweat off of her forehead. Stupid giant feathery bird, she thought to herself while catching her breath. And now I've lost sight of the thing. How will I be able to find it again? She thought for a moment and then had a brilliant idea. She found the tallest tree on the edge of the clearing and climbed as far up as she could go. At the top, she sat and listened for the beast.

She closed her eyes and listened to the animals and plants below her. To her bottom right, she heard two squirrels fighting over a few nuts that one had hid in its nest. To her left, she heard a dove settling down for the evening. And behind her... she focused on the noise. She heard something running up quickly. Very quickly. As she opened her eyes and looked down, she saw that it was the cockatrice, running at full force towards the trunk of the tree. I should be safe. Surely this thing can't knock over this tree? She looked down. Well, it does look a little thin. But it should be able to handle the beast. She braced herself for impact. And then she felt the cockatrice hit the tree once. She heard a crack through the trunk. Then it hit the tree a second time, and then a final third. With a loud "snap!", the tree went down with her at the top, causing her to come crashing down into the clearing, straight onto her side.

Symphony tried to push herself up, but she was too sore and just collapsed back down. "I need a bloody nap..." she muttered to herself as she finally got the feeling back in her legs and began to sit up. Immediately, the cockatrice began to charge once more. "Are you kidding me?" She rolled out of the way, gripping her side when she was right side up once more. "Oww." After a few moments the pain subsided, but she still felt uncomfortable. "Stupid giant flappy thingy," she cursed as she slowly got up, walking over and bracing herself against a tree. She knew she would need a few more moments to fully recover from the fall before she could attempt to attack. However, the cockatrice did not want to give her that chance (wisely so) and charged at her once more. This time, Cloak clawed at its eyes and diverted the beast's attention from Symphony at the last moment. The cockatrice then tried to snap up at the black raven, narrowly missing his tail feathers.

Cloak did his best to keep the cockatrice away from Symphony as long as he could, but the large bird got bored of him quickly and turned back to his larger, more dangerous companion. Symphony looked up at the bird, still stiff from the high fall she had had. It must have been a drop of at least 20 feet. She was glad that the pain scale was dialed way down in game. In real life, she knew she would have had either very serious injuries or be dead. The cockatrice bent down and huffed in her face, its breath smelling horrible. "Gah! Get your stupid bug breath away from me!" she cried as she pushed its beak away with her hand. As soon as her hand touched its beak, the cockatrice became enraged and grabbed Symphony by the arm. It threw her to the other side of the clearing where she fell into some barbed bushes. "Ow..."

Symphony got up slowly, holding the side of her head, which was bleeding slightly. Still covering the right side of her face she readied her dagger. The cockatrice raced over at an impressive speed towards the weakened woman. Come on, just a little closer. A little closer, Symphony thought to herself as she judged when to attack. At 15 feet, she waited. At 10 feet, she still waited. It was finally at 8 feet away that Symphony threw her dagger straight into the middle of the giant bird's forehead, piercing the bone and going straight through into its brain. Symphony leaned against the tree as she waited for her injury to heal, the pixels of the cockatrice exploding into the air. Cloak quickly flew over to check on his human companion. "I'm alright, Cloak," she said, finally taking her hand off of her forehead. The bleeding had stopped and the scrape healed.

Now the next bit of business: seeing what the monster had dropped.

Symphony sighed, happy that the long fight had finally ended. She glanced around for any more materials that she could find in the general area, but found none. So she decided to take a break for lunch. She called Cloak over with a whistle and got a silver bowl filled with fresh meat chunklets for him to eat while she ate her own lunch. She laid the bowl on the ground, and Cloak quickly and eagerly started gobbling it down. "Don't go to fast, bud. You don't want to choke," she advised him. Meanwhile, she pulled out her own lunch: a peanut butter and banana sandwich with a fruit juice to drink. She quickly found a nearby tree to lean up against as she ate her lunch. It all tasted so good, especially after a long fight. The mix of banana and peanut butter in her mouth made her happy and content, her anger from earlier nowhere to be found now.

Once she was finished eating, Symphony tried looking around her to find any sorts of flowers or herbs to gather for dying leather, but she could find none. So she decided to sit back down and write an entry into her journal. One day, she would publish these entries into a book for beginners like she used to be.

Entry #1: Cockatrice, Medium Variety
Description: The medium-sized cockatrice stands about 8 feet high with the stature and build of a normal-sized chicken. The main difference between the two is the difference in size. The cockatrice also has razor sharp cartilage lining the inside of its beak -- perfect for tearing apart small creatures. The cockatrice also has a broader wing ratio, allowing it to soar over tree tops for a short distance. This variant comes in a multitude of colors and color patterns, ranging from white and brown feathers to blue and orange body feathers with blue and purple, long tail feathers. The legs of this beast are scaled, which makes it harder to penetrate from head on. It has about 5 - 10 inch long nails on each toe that are razor sharp and cut a player open easily.

Symphony took a break from her writing to go try and gather some more materials. She gathered some silk-weaver spiders and stored them in a jar with air holes cut in the top of the wood. She would add them in the collection to her shop where she kept them all in a safe glass tank with food and plenty of room. Their webs were made out of silk which could be turned into thread to make fabrics. Once she had completed her task, she sat back down in the shade of a tall oak tree and took out her journal once more. This time, she would write about the basic attacks of the cockatrice.

Quote

Attack Patterns:
+ Basic attack with its razor sharp talons. Usually attacks player's front.
+ Gust: Uses its powerful wings and size to blow its enemies away/into hard objects.
+Charge: (unusual move) Charges a tree or large bush that enemy is hiding in/perching on until the object breaks and the enemy either falls or is exposed.

Weaknesses:
+Aim for the back of the neck and back of the animal.
+The legs of the cockatrice are not scaled behind the knees and wrists of the beast. Also not armored between its toes.
