[F01 - PP] That's my GODDAMN SOUP

Recommended Posts

As Koga swooped in, Dederick shifted his shield and deflected what would have been yet another direct hit. The katana glanced harmlessly off of his breastplate and chipped a minuscule amount of HP away from his health bar, but Regen instantly replenished what was lost and more. As Koga's attack concluded, Dederick's shield illuminated with an azure glow, which then transferred from the sheet of metal and into Koga's body, sapping away his HP. From the looks of their health bars, they were now at a virtually identical - roughly three fourths filled. A grin returned to Dederick's lips as he recognized that he still had a shot in this, so long as he didn't take any more direct hits.

He shoved his shield forcefully against Koga's blade and forced the man back, putting distance between them as he assumed his defensive stance once more. If he was going to lose this, it would be because he was bested - not because he was careless.

There was no way Koga could sustain that much damage from the other player's Thorns and still win this duel, he had to at least wait for his Regen to finish restoring his health. The man stole a quick glance at his HP gauge as he staggered backwards from Dederick's push. He wouldn't have enough to win the duel at this rate. But he had to keep the pressure on at least.

Koga slid back a few more feet before taking off towards Dederick again. Kuiaratame cut screamed through the air as it careened towards Dederick's left side. A place Koga knew the man could easily defend. Just before the other player had a chance to raise his shield, Koga drew back from his feint. He couldn't even risk touching that man's shield or armor right now. If he could just keep him off balance, just a little bit, he might be able to land one more good crit.

As Koga came in for the feint, Dederick retained his rigid stance and adjusted the pitch of his shield to block. But then the man backed away. The edges of Dederick's lips curled upward.

"You might give me guff for talking too much, but if all you've got on the menu is feints, there's not much else I can do. Afraid to feel the sting of my Thorns again?" His taunt wasn't without purpose. If he could get Koga to take damage from the Thorns at least one more time, he would cement the lead and need only avoid getting Blighted again. Surely this was doable.

Even as it stood now, Dederick had the advantage. Though they shared the same Regen Enhancement, Dederick seemed to be a lower level than Koga, and his health bar was filling more with each rotation of healing than Koga's was. Without another Blight, Dederick had this in the bag.

'Almost there...'
That's what Koga was thinking as he listened to his opponent talk, keeping a careful eye on his health bar. It was almost done regenerating. At this rate, Koga knew he wouldn't win this duel if he wasn't able to proc his Blight against his opponent...even then, it might not be enough. He should've just waited out the timer. But then again, where was the fun in that?

"You might give me guff for talking too much, but if all you've got on the menu is feints, there's not much else I can do. Afraid to feel the sting of my Thorns again?" Dederick said with a smile, clearly enjoying the idea that Koga was too afraid to hit him again. Fat chance. Koga wasn't going to go down without a fight.

"Yeah, yeah, keep talking buddy. Let's see who's smiling at the end of this."

Koga really hoped that it was going to be him...otherwise he was gonna looked like a downright fool.

"Yes, let's," Dederick mused, holding up his sword once more. He felt like it was time to go back on the offensive, but something was wrong. His sword refused to jump into action. It appeared as though he did not have enough energy to adequately activate the Sword Art he had planned on using. Instead, his sword simply numbly vibrated in his hand to signify its refusal to cooperate. If only he had been a higher level, this wouldn't have been such an issue. Or, perhaps, it was an error in his judgement when choosing his Enhancements.

No matter. His way to win the duel was by sitting still and waiting instead. When he had the energy to attack again, he would. Until then, he would continue to rely on the Thorns to carry him through the fight. It was the only shot in hell he had at winning this putrid duel.

The last tick of health regenerated in Koga's HP gauge. Still too low...and he wasn't going to be able to bust through that armor. Here goes nothing.

At this point, Dederick could probably guess what Koga was going to do. The real question was whether or not the man was fast enough to react. A quick dash, followed by a rapid swing. Dederick was in the air again.

But Koga could feel the Thorns taking a healthy bite out of his health. The health bar dropped further than Koga would've liked and a mental red flag flew upwards in the man's mind.

That was no good. The swordsman bounded backwards again, keeping as much space between himself and the other man as possible. Koga wasn't going to win this fight at this rate. And that was okay with him. But he was still going to make the other player work for it.

This infernal skill that Koga kept using was really beginning to get on Dederick's nerves. It wasn't that it particularly hurt, and this much was evident when Dederick landed on his feet and skidded back instead of becoming a heap on the ground. It was the fact that he was now yet again too far away and too much time had been wasted to retaliate. Which was a shame, because Dederick had a good feeling about his next swing. Now he would never know.

All he could really do was raise his shield and wait for the man's next attack. Given his increasingly frenzied nature, Dederick was certain that Koga had come to the same realization that he had. He was fighting a losing battle, and the more he attacked without a crit, the worse the situation got for him. But this only seemed to make his fighting style more loose and ferocious. A man with nothing to lose was a fearsome foe, indeed.

Just keep going.

That was about all Koga was thinking as he rushed back in to strike again. No sword arts this time, just good old fashioned steel. The man swung at Dederick, despite the raised shield. The only sound was a resounding knlag as metal clashed against metal, echoing evilly in both fighter's ears. There was no backing off now, it was either all or nothing. Koga could feel the Thorns eating at his health again. Just keep going...

The air seemed charged with ferocity, appearing to stem from Koga. If it wasn't clear before, it was now, Koga wasn't going to forfeit. Regardless of who won, it would be well earned. Sweat would drench their clothes, and their lungs would scream for air. The swordsman was going to make sure of that. The timer was ticking down. There were only going to be so many more chances for Koga to land his hit. But that was all he need, one hit. Just one, good, hit.

As Regen was procced again, Dederick watched his health climb ever closer to full. Meanwhile, Koga's health depleted further and further with each failure to issue a good hit. Dederick shifted his shield to account for each of the man's frenzied attacks, eyes coolly following each strike with calmness and precision. When the opportunity seemed right, Dederick thrusted his shield forward to throw Koga off balance and moved in with an attack of his own. But his opponent was too nimble and managed to avoid taking any damage easily.

Dederick scowled at his failure to deliver any raw damage, but nonetheless raised his shield for the next inevitable onslaught. In the end, the Lantern of Justice needed not to use his weapon, but only keep his defensive posture strong enough to either run out the clock or force Koga to eliminate himself from the duel.

Koga's next attack was met with resistance from Dederick. The man attempted to push back against the swordsman's blade. On one leg, the man wasn't able to balance himself and press forward. But Koga was quick to adjust. The man let his body be pushed back. He saw the shield user's next attack coming, and used his momentum to twist and duck beneath the sword. The man was facing the ground at this point, and with his free hand, pivoted around, the katana cutting the air to strike at his opponent's side. The blade struck Dederick's shield again, draining Koga's health further. Damn, this was really not going his way.

Koga was pretty much resigned to losing at this point. He only had one more chance at this. Should he take it? Or should he play it safe. Well, one way or another, he was gonna lose...might as well go out with a bang.

The man's retaliation had been quick, but Dederick's shield was quicker. A metallic hiss sounded out as the Katana bounced harmlessly from its surface, a translucent blue light flashing from its surface and directing itself into Koga's body. As Dederick witnessed the man's health bar dip impossibly close to half, he knew that now was his time to strike.

But he needed to clever. Quick. Nimble. The same tired approach he had been using would only fail again if he didn't get it right this time. So he tried something else. With his blade coated in amber light, he took two powerful strides forward, bringing his blade down in a diagonal slash toward Koga. But just as it had been when their battle started, it was a feint. He knew that Koga would expect this.

So he followed it up with a horizontal sweep, which the man again avoided easily. This, too, was a feint. Dederick carried the momentum of the swing and spun rapidly, issuing a harrowing slash that finally found its mark, depleting the man's HP into the yellow.

WINNER: DEDERICK

With a sigh of relief, Dederick let his sword and shield fall to the ground with a clank and plopped down onto his ass, allowing his arms to fall behind him to support his weary frame. That had been so much more intense than he ever could have imagined. "That... was awesome."

Koga's blade bounced off the other player's shield, the sensation of Thorns rippling through his body as his health bar dipped dangerously close to half health. Dederick knew this was his chance. The first went for Koga's left shoulder, and the Swordsman raised his weapon to defend, only to realize it was a feint. Dederick shifted to slash across Koga's waist. The man couldn't move his blade quickly enough, so instead he leapt into the air, throwing his body horizontal as he spun only to feel a weapon slam into his body and send him flying through air and into the dirt.

"That... was awesome."

Koga lifted his head off the ground and looked into the air. 'Winner Dederick!' Koga let his head fall back into the dirt as he started to laugh. "Ohhhh, man. That was a good fight!" The man finally got back onto his feet and sheathed his sword as he walked over to the other man and offered his hand. "GG man. That was a great fight. Been a while since I've had my ass kicked like that."

Dederick took the man's hand appreciatively, giving it a firm shake. "If I'm being honest, it really felt like I would be the one taking the pounding here," he admitted as he bent over to retrieve his fallen equipment. Despite the win, Dederick didn't feel any better about the soup. He'd avenged it, but for what? It still stained the grass between them.

"Hey. Let's go get some new soup. That's really the only appropriate way to amend a situation like this. My treat."

His sword and shield came to a rest on his back before he turned and began meandering back toward the Town of Beginnings. He hoped that Koga would follow, but whether or not he actually did didn't matter in the end. Chicken dumpling soup. It was the only thing that mattered at the moment. Dederick was absolutely famished after a duel like that.

It seemed that the day hadn't been so ruined as he had originally imagined. There would be more soup. Life would go on.

The victor gave Koga a firm handshake, "If I'm being honest, it really felt like I would be the one taking the pounding here."
Koga couldn't help but chuckle, "Not gonna lie, so did I. But, once I realized you had not only Thorns and a crap ton of Mitigation, but also Fire-Proof? Yeah, I pretty much knew it was over."

A moment of silence passed between the two players, before the other man spoke up, "Hey. Let's go get some new soup. That's really the only appropriate way to amend a situation like this. My treat."
Koga held up a hand as if to stop Dederick, "Ah! To the winner go the spoils. It's on me. Don't bother arguing, or else I might have to duel you a second time." It was only right that Koga be the one to buy the soup after all. It wasn't very often that Koga got his ass kicked by a lower level player anyways. It was a rather humbling experience.
