[SP] [F01] Time for some action, Inosuke the warrior! <<The Second Lesson, Is Also Free>>

Recommended Posts

The boar pup was persistent, Rei slashed out again and once more missed, an invisible force pushing his blade aside from the boar, meanwhile the boar struck his chest once more, this time with a bit more flair as a barely visible wave of force erupted through his body, even so, it did no more than 1 damage and felt little else than a small prick of pain.

Such a fight was not interesting, he couldn’t wait till he got better gear when the system would stop messing with him like this.

Looking over he could see Takumi, solidly raising his shield as a wall to bat aside the boar, charging up his Pierce art all the while, only unleashing it when the boar landed on the ground, in that moment of opportunity.

However, it seemed that even he was having trouble battling against the system and perhaps a little bit of unfamiliarity, his spear seemed to waver and veer off course, missing the boar.

Rei swung at the boar as he stepped to the side to avoid it again, he sighed when he saw that the blade veered off course as if affected by the wind and the Boar changed direction and plunged against his chest, it bounced off, dealing 1 damage, at this point, fights like these were just a nuisance, he needed to buy gear and soon. He had the Col, the only problem was Materials for now.

On the other hand, he was sure there was a quest where he could gain a `Profession`, if he took that, he could become a blacksmith and make his own weapons and such. That would be quite convenient, his friends would probably do the same, it was a good way to earn money after all, even if collecting materials would be a pain in the ass.

He idly wondered what the others would choose as he waited for the stun from attacking wore off.

Yuta… might become a blacksmith? A tailor or artisan? It was hard to tell actually, now that he thought about it, he had no idea what the others would choose, he could imagine Takumi being a alchemist, but he didn’t have a clue as to Kenji’s preference either. He couldn’t really remember what professions there were at this point in time anyhow.

Slashing out at the bore absentmindedly, practically running on auto now if anything, he felt the feedback as his blade finally managed to hit his target, at last and the boar shattered into several shards, again, a failure, no tusks were to be found, a waste of time.

However, he shouldn’t say that, he was getting a further in depth insight into the combat of this game, and if he ever wanted to get stronger here, he will need to study it further. Well, there were 20 floors until the frontlines, and he planned to complete every single quest he came across, so he should have ample time.

He glanced at his energy, did he have enough for more fights? Maybe one more, he whipped around, seeing the next Boar rush at him, it leapt through the air as usual and  he charged his first strike to be the Rage Blow art, after that, he could finish it off with a simple strike, all in the name of energy conservation and efficient use. To his surprise though, perhaps only his reflexes helped out, but the blow neatly bisected the boar as he brought the blade down, with the boar cut down in mid air, a large red gash down the length of it’s body, it separated briefly, displaying a flat red interior like a object rather than a living being before shattering into glass like light.

There was a soft sound as a white tusk fell to the ground, picking it up between his fingers, he dropped it into his inventory. Two out of three. He was getting there.

Energy low, he decided to spent the time it too to regenerate by idly searching for materials, outside of that quest, the only thing he found find now outside of the quest from last time were sparkles of light and a generic gemstone. A Tier 1 material. It was used for any form of crafting and for player run stores, they usually asked for Col and material, he supposed it was to save them the trouble of having to go and find the material themselves, it was certainly a smart and ingenious plan, as befitting any sort of player who had the bright idea to set up shop during a death game, they sure know how to capitalise on the stuff.

He would seriously prefer if he could just settle things with Col though… it would be so much simply. Why did no NPC sell any weapons or armour with enhancements? There were all useless, having no benefit to having them except for the fact it let them use specialisation skills.

“How are you guys doing?” Rei asked through the party chat, “I’ve got two out of three at last,”

“Same,” Yuta responded plainly, “The drop rates aren’t too great for me, I’ve killed a bunch of them already,”

“I’ve only killed a few, but I’ve managed to get it all,” Takumi reported with a exhausted sigh, “It’s really tiring to use these Arts and engage in combat, huh? It’s really weird to feel so damn tired and then for it all to regenerate in a few seconds,”

“It’s really disorientating, yeah,” Rei nodded, “It doesn’t help with mental fatigue though,”

“G-guys? Help…” Kenji cried out, his voice made it sound like he was traumatised or had given up,

“What’s wrong?” Yuta asked seriously,

“I’m still on my first boar and it’s still alive, it’s currently jumping on my chest,”

“… Are you okay?”

“Yeah… It’s only doing 1 damage, so it’s not I’ll die unless it hits me a 100 times, but still, it’s too hard to hit…”

“I’m busy,”

“I’ll go…” Takumi sighed, resigned to his fate,

Hm, another gem, in Rei’s hand, the sparkle on the ground transformed into a gem in his hands, it seems these sparkles were gathering spots, it was up to chance if you got something or not even if you spent time searching it, it wasn’t instant and took time, he was reminded that there were skills to make these kind to tasks easier, but it seemed a bit costly.

It looked like his energy would soon recover, he let out a cold, foggy breath in this winter morning, as he looked to the sky, he had a strange pensive thought in his mind as the wind blew past him, just how long have they all been here? How long until they were free?

He’s already said he might not want to go back, but the idea of having to stay here forever was a pretty bad decision as well, after all, think of all the other games waiting for them out there, it would be a shame to limit himself to just this one.

Energy full, it was time to recontinue the fight to get some boar tusks, he sighed as he got up from his crouched position by the gathering spot, turning to look at the small boar pups that respawned and were charging towards him, raising his blade in the now familiar position, he readied his art and unleashed it when the boars were flying towards it, it made it just that little bit more fun even if it was reckless.

The boar shot towards him as if propelled by an invisible force, steaking towards him at speeds not physically capable for such a young living beast. Well, at the same time, Rei swung down with all his might, his watery blue arc sliding around the boar and crashing into the floor like the wave of the sea, missing entirely and causing grass, dirt and stones to kick up at the air, he winced as the recoil from missing a Art hit his energy and less from the small tingle from the boar punching into his side.

One more time.

He raised his blade and preformed the art again, hoping to kill the boar pup in one strike, but it seems it was fated not to be as the boar curved in mid air by unknown forces, missing him, but also dodging his strike.

The constant failure made him wish he kept his starter gear instead of selling it all off so that he could laze around, but he was afraid at the time, hopeful for someone else to come and save them, to make the decision for him. But now that it had run out, they had begun moving. Like lazy, moldy, old statues, they have begun moving, discarding that dirt and rust, gears were turning and eyes were looking forward to the future, they had momentum and it would be a shame to stop any time soon.

Another cascade of debris hit the grass from his missed attack, unable to stop the destructive swing, it passed the boar and struck the earth, nearly throwing his lower body upwards behind him, both his feet touching the ground again, the turned to face the boar.

One more time.

He lashed out with his Art, the descending wave smashed into the boar, throwing it to the ground with a hard slam. The boar gave a high pitched squeak of pain as it bounced and fell still, Rei saw it’s health bar fall low but it was still alive, before he could make the decision to move back, the Boar leapt up, hitting his jaw with a loud crack, it hurt about as much as accidently walking into a table or biting his tongue. Stumbling backwards, one hand rubbing his jaw, he winced in pain as he looked at the boar that seemed to stand straight and smug at him, the sight of a perhaps imagined humanity or sign of life in that little creature made Rei smile a little despite all the trouble it was giving him. He was in no danger from this boar and it was really a matter of time until he succeeded. No too long now.

One last strike, normal without the use of an art since it was unnecessary, Rei punched the boar out of the air as it charged towards him, time to end this, it was a brutal stopping force against the boar, dealing no damage however, the boar bounced off and collapsed onto the ground, stunned and surprised. As it shook its head with a determined expression, trying to get back up with its eyes facing the sun, the shadow loomed over him as Rei stepped forward over it, blade falling, finishing it off into a explosion of glass.

All that was left of the boar was his tusk, picking it up, it dematerialised in Rei’s hand.

3/3 mission complete, it was time to head back,

“Hey, how’s everything on your end?” Rei pressed a hand to his ear,

“Done a long time ago,” Yuta remarked,

“Hey! Kenji! Watch where you’re going!” Takumi shouted, watching as Kenji was being smacked around by the boar, it was less painful and more shock that made him stumble everywhere, coming dangerously close to Takumi,

Glancing back to apologise, Kenji didn’t see the boar agilely leap to his lowered shield and use that as a platform to dive towards his jaw, achieving the same effect as it did on Rei, it felt like he hit his jaw on a table or something as he fell over right into Takumi behind him.

“Gah!” Takumi cried out, “Hey, get off me!” pinned down by his heavy armour, Takumi, no matter how much he tried to push him off, couldn’t move him,

“S-sorry!!!” Kenji repeated, scrambling to get off,

“It’s… hard to fight together against a small monster huh…” Yuta sighed, watching this happen from a few metres away, they had come to help Kenji and things were going relatively well, but Kenji had to land the last blow to get that boar tusk for the mission, since they all had to get 3 and they wouldn’t get any more once they’ve hit the quota.

Well, it took some time, but they soon returned to the town after the few hours of being beaten around and beating some boar pups. It wasn’t their damage nor their health that was the problem, but it was how hard it was to hit the small things.

If this quest’s length was anything to go by, they probably could only do another two quests after this, hopefully, they could complete the chain within the day. The 4 of them looked rather rough, messy from playing around in the grassland and getting pushed around by boars. Some significantly more than most, Yuta seemed to be mostly fine, Takumi was dirty from having fallen, mostly because of Kenji falling on top of him. Meanwhile Rei had the most trouble because of Inosuke, so he wasn’t looking too good, mostly a lot of mud. But Kenji, his new armour as slightly dented and scratched all over, dirt and grass covered most of his body.

Well, the first thing they did was head back to the Inn, there they could take a shower and through that, their equipment could be quickly cleaned off, because they were not going to go through town looking like that.

As they walked through the town over to Lyle’s blacksmith, it had only been a few hours since they were last here, but it seemed like a lot more shops were open, ones they didn’t recognise, granted, there were plenty of player run shops and almost all of then ran on Col and Mats, they had the Col, but not the Mats, so they had to just leave most of it behind.

They soon arrived at the blacksmith, finding that familiar golden leaf and black anvil, walking in, Lyle was back in the forge, working away. There seemed to be no one else in the shop as usual so they rang the bell to call for him. Wiping his hands on his apron, the old man walked over, eyes widening with recognition as he heartily laughed, “Oh! Welcome back, how did everything go?”

“we got the boar tusks,” Rei nodded, materialising the items on the counter, his friends all followed suit,

“Ah, very good! This is excellent!” he seemed outrageously overjoyed, “Alright! Here, take this!” he slammed four strange blue potions in a slightly conical vessel, on the counter table

“It looks like a blue lagoon,” Takumi frowned, holding it in one hand and poking it with the other, watching the bubbles rise.

“What’s this?” Yuta scrutinised it.

“It’s a safeguard potion! If you drink it, the very next attack will do nothing to you!” Lyle declared,

“Interesting…” Rei mused, “So this will come in handy against strong opponents,”

“Exactly, it’s perfect for young reckless warriors like yourselves,” Lyle nodded enthusiastically, “On top of this, I noticed that you had no weapons or armour before coming here,” he stared them over, “I don’t have much, but I can give you a selection of weapons and armour enhanced to the first level.”

He manoeuvred his way around the counter to gesture towards the items on display, “Take your pick! My weapons here do extra damage and my armour will protect you better than what you currently have,”

“Thank you very much,” Kenji bowed slightly, Yuta and Takumi ignored the man entirely and quickly went about searching the racks for a weapon of their choosing, they knew that he was just a unfeeling NPC after all.

“Thanks,” Rei nodded to him, “We appreciate it,”

“No need to be reserved, young lad, I remember when I was your age,” he laughed, slapping them on the back.

Yuta brushed off the weapons, settling only for the daggers of which there was a number but he tried to find one that he liked, sleek, practical, ignoring any semblance of appearance he didn’t care much for looks but simply for how useful they were.

He settled on something similar to a medieval dagger, it was really just a small sword, as things should be. A silvery blade as long as one’s forearm, double edged, straight blade as wide as the hilt, the guard was small and less cumbersome, it meant that he had less hand protection, but he was going to switch to unarmed attacks later down the line when he could anyway, the dagger was just a placeholder for him and a good choice for close quarters combat for him.

“I’ll take this one,” Yuta held it up to Lyle too make sure his choice was understood by the system more so than his worry of Lyle’s acceptance, but in any case, he gave his approval,

“A good choice lad!”

Takumi quickly picked a spear, he didn’t have all the knowledge or consideration put into it like Yuta had, he just looked at a spear that he felt that he could use, that wasn’t too flashy or confusing and took it.

This one seemed mostly made of metal, the shaft coloured with a bronze like sheen, the top was fixed with a steel spear head, with two slight protrusions, in a sense, it was a spear’s guard, a piece of metal on the side made to deflect or block incoming attacks. The other end of the spear ended in a single sharp spike, it would be used in close combat or used to finish off downed opponents.

Kenji was much the same way, with no real preference, he chose the most normal looking steel arming sword, it had the usual leather wrapped grip, long, straight double edged blade that tapered to a sharp point. It was at least brand new so it was quite shiny and clean, soon to gather a variety of scratches from combat to give it a good worn appearance.

Rei looked around, hoping to find a katana, but of course there were none here, he sighed, looking down at his Dao, he took a lot of time to find it, sure, it was a base weapon with no bonuses, but he liked the look, he next best thing here was the scimitar, with a large broad and pronounced curved blade, a golden triangular guard and a hilt that curved the opposite way, it only had the space to fit one hand and due to it’s extreme curvature, it was perfect for cutting.

When he picked it up, he noted that it had the Damage 1 enhancement, it seemed to increase his base damage by 1, a small increase, but a increase nonetheless, he was sure that this would be of use to him.

Once they all picked out their weapons, Lyle suddenly realised,

“Ah, right!” he ran to the back of the counter, rummaging through the contents and brought up a brown package, much like the one they brought to him, hell, it looked identical.

“Before I forget, Hannah asked me to finish a gold ring band for her, could you please give it to her? I’m er… kinda busy,” he glanced over at the forge nervously,

“Of course, we’ll give it to her,” Rei nodded, the four of them received the same packages as the man nodded,

“Many thanks! Good luck on your quest to the top!” he quickly scrambled back the forge, leaving the four of them staring after him before looking at each other and leaving the shop together,

“So, this is the third step?” Yuta asked,

“Yeah,” Rei nodded,

“Hm… we have to explore a cave… defeat the golem inside and… somehow find a single gem inside,” Takumi read off his memory,

“Er… w-will there be a lot of fighting?” Kenji shuddered,

“Probably, I mean, it’s a dungeon right?” Yuta shrugged,

“Dungeons are a bit different here, but yeah, there’s probably monsters in there,” Rei nodded, “How strong was it again?”

“Not too strong,” Takumi replied, “20hp, it does… 50 damage on the first hit and then it’s 5 from there on out.”

“50!? What the hell!?” Yuta cried out,

“That’s probably what the safeguard potion is for, huh,” Rei noted,

“Yeah… it won’t kill us, but it would be best if we drank the potion the moment we find the golem,” Takumi nodded,

“…What if we get tricked by another golem to drinking it?” Yuta suddenly said,

“Can that even happen?” Kenji frowned,

“Maybe, you never know,” Yuta shrugged in response,

“Well, the item’s a quest item, we can’t even use it outside of the golem battle according to the notes,” Rei replied, having opened up the menu already,

“Seriously?”

“Wait, since all these missions have been duplicates, do you think there’s going to be 4 of them if we go together?” Takumi suddenly brought up,

“Uh….” They all glanced at each other with horror filled eyes, if all four of them were having a boss battle next to each other, it would be chaotic.

“I hope not.”

“… Let’s go get lunch, it seems like it’ll be a long one,”
