[E3-SP-F11] On a Suspicious Silver Platter pt. 1

Recommended Posts

Once more: Floor 11.

But she hadn't gone back to the [Cavern] for this excursion, no sir— Arabelle was not about to waste an entire sideplot-relevant cave network along with all the mystery that came with the setting on a trash grinding thread. Oh, but for a more legitimate excuse, she didn't want to deal with the entire 'guild grounds, enter only if your name isn't Arabelle and oh maybe also if you have a permit' nonsense again. She was in more of a rush than last time, you see, and event-limited items served as loads better motivation than an extra +1 to a Prosperity buff.

So she came extra prepared. Before she arrived at the [Garden] farthest from Taft, Arabelle swapped her phoenix brooch for an LD trinket she borrowed from An (the lucky girl, she didn't even see a need to participate in the egg hunt) and consumed the last of the food buffs she brought with her.

For this event, the [Garden] was populated with a new type of mob.

Hopping in and out of the area, the busy [Easter Bunnies] looked more like cuddly balls of white fluff than red-cursored creatures who could kill someone if they weren't carefull enough. They seemed content to ignore the players in favor of standing on their hind legs with ears pricked. Pink noses sniffed curiously at the air and fluffy tails twitched with every movement. She watched one bunny in particular as it diligently dug through the tall blades of grass. The creature appeared to grab hold onto something and after some more digging, pulled back with a small round object. It stuffed it into its thick fur and hopped away to continue its innocent search for more.

Chocolate eggs.

Arabelle understood. There was only one course of action from here on.

She was going to kill them.

"Amaterasu."

The pitch black scythe appeared in her gloved hands and she began an offensive.

Aw, the poor things. So caught off-guard that only one managed to launch a counterattack. The brave [Easter Bunny], though small and cute in appearance, had legs that could pack quite a punch! (...or speaking more literally, a kick). If Arabelle hadn't consumed a MIT buff, her HP would have gone down a considerable amount. Wonder what they reminded her of?

Thankfully, she was rarely the type to underestimate.

She didn't dally. Before the four mobs could regain their bearings, the small purple-haired girl sent the attacking bundle of fluff flying with a kick and ignited her scythe. She flowed smoothly back into motion and all were swept away with the force of her follow-up attack. Arabelle gave no pause and started to move forward, eyes sparking a bright crimson, but she stopped short when the small creatures disintegrated before they even touched the ground.

How curious. So bunnies could make sounds, after all?

She always saw them as quiet, docile creatures. Perhaps even a little sweet. She never took care of one herself, but she remembered her neighbors kept a pair in their yard and she'd always wondered why they never ran away. The fences had wide enough gaps that they could slip through to get to her side for an occasional round of petting, but at the end of the day, they always returned to the yard at the other side. So— they were never hers and while they were the cutest to play with, Arabelle didn't have enough attachment to associate them with the event mobs hopping about the [Garden] now.

Tl;dr, girl literally has no remorse about killing innocent bunnies for their eggs. Because they were lines of code. Sentimental dummies.

Arabelle dematerialized her scythe and picked up a chocolate egg and then an herb just nearby. Then she sprinted forward and gathered up the sweets falling gently to the ground like feathers.

The chocolate eggs from the bunnies weighed almost nothing when she held one in the palm of her hand, but when she dropped them into her inventory, the system saw them as no different to the eggs she had amassed from out-of-combat gathering prior. She bet they would taste different too — perhaps with the consistency and sweetness of cotton candy — and that if she pressed down on one a little too hard, she'd shatter the shell as if it was made of paper. As fluffy and fragile as the [Easter Bunnies] who were in possession of it, but she didn't want to try and prove her random musings.

She had no time and chocolate eggs to waste! Not until she got her hands on that reroll ticket, anyway.

Arabelle finished placing her spoils in her inventory (along with another batch she quickly picked up), then checked the totals of her loot. And her jaw almost f-cking dropped. Pardon the French.

The LD buff from Cordelia's food, and then the LD enhancement on An's D20 trinket worked hand-in-hand to boost her loot to levels she'd never once experienced herself before — only read and heard about. Arabelle withdrew the dungeon map from her inventory and cradled it as if it was a sacred relic, turning it over in her hands as she curiously examined every inch of the yellowed paper. It pointed to an entrance that was open only to her, who possessed the map, and nothing more. She knew where she would go to test out her new and re-optimized build after the event now.

Easing herself out of her spellbound state, she returned the map to her inventory and got back to searching. Not too far from where she stood, Arabelle found more chocolate eggs nestled at the base of a few herbs. She dropped them to her inventory one by one and resummoned Amaterasu.

Arabelle had her eyes on a small group of [Easter Bunnies] gathering chocolate eggs together in blissful ignorance of their impending doom. She was a little glad the [Garden] was large enough so that other players weren't too close to her (and even then, she observed they were mostly on the same boat) because she would have received a fair amount of strange stares as she advanced on the event mobs with her scythe eagerly expelling black globules of flame.

The heads of the small fluffy creatures snapped in her direction, pink noses twitching. Now alert of her approaching presence, they seemed to pull closer together — but that only made the AoE DPS's job loads easier! Her scythe ignited with the black flames of a Sword Art and she took off in a sprint, effectively slicing through the bunnies with an AoE. As her attack ended, two of the braver mobs leaped to the air and kicked her on the head.

Well, these mobs weren't as taken by surprise as the first bunch.

Arabelle would have ambushed them and obliterated them before they could even so much as squeal, but since she was at higher health, she was a little curious of how they made their attacks. They were so light, so easy for the scythe-wielder to shrug off, but they were rather vicious. As soon as the blunt end of her scythe sent an attacking bunny harmlessly flying back into the grass, another was taking its place and throwing itself at her with a loud squeak — which she figured was an attempt to sound threatening but the high-pitched sound only made the small creature look pitiful.

What was the term for it?

They fought like cornered animals, and they had the event to thank for her not playing with her prey like a curious cat. She was on a time limit.

With ease and a little bit of urgency, Arabelle sent another [Sword Art] the bunnies' way.

Arabelle: 2; [Easter Bunnies]: 0!

Well, she expected nothing less. As the data crystals slowly rained down around her, the small purple-haired girl allowed herself a proud smile. She went and caught the eggs and the various other spoils once again, grabbed some materials off the ground (yeah, it was that easy. deal with it) and tallied up her totals. 20k col, 20+ T2 materials, and 30+ chocolate eggs... and from two sets of mobs. If Arabelle were the type to be satisfied by simply sitting around and, well, surviving (she guessed) like more than half of Aincrad's player population did, her haul from this grind would kept her fed for months! That wasn't even counting the unidentified equipment she could take An to sell.

And maybe the curious girl might even want to come along for the dungeon, too? Arabelle remembered the amateur merchant seemed to have a penchant for exploring and she was steadily tiring of the safe zones and wanting to explore the higher floors.

...but before that! Arabelle needed to finish this. She was more than halfway through to her initial goal of fifty eggs, all for another unique enhancement on Amaterasu, of course. Though there was a quest that rewarded an item that gave a weapon a [Burn] enhancement (talk about just giving away uniques for free, right? but she was benefitting, so she wasn't one to complain), one slot of [Accuracy] would still remain on her weapon.

She did not like that.

Regular [Accuracy] was for trinkets, not weapons — who could hold some of the most powerful game-breaking stuff! Plus, could you blame her for wanting to be a little perfectionist? One enhancement distributed between two different equipment simply didn't look pretty.

Her energy was still regenerating. Small and cute as they were, it cost almost all of her EN to wipe them out. So she waited and moved about the flower-populated greenery of the [Garden], whistling a little pop tune to herself as she picked up both performer crystals and chocolate eggs.

Good old gathering.

When was even the last time she gathered out of combat like this? Not too long ago now that she thought about it, but at that time, Arabelle had been too preoccupied with exchanging choice words with her very unwelcome companion for her to properly put her mind to it. And before that... it was the guild gathering trip but oh, she'd also been a little too preoccupied with poking and prodding at Jinx for a reaction. And before before that, it was probably during a small trip with Dustin.

She hadn't even tried. Too busy flirting.

Turning her head down to a point in the ground at the base of a large tree, Arabelle moved closer to the shade and dug out the soil with her boot to reveal a hole between its large roots. She reached in and first pulled out a shiny performer crystal before moving on to gather the eggs hidden behind it.

Energy regenerated.

Time for some murder.

This time, she did try to sneak up on the bunnies. There were four again, the typical amount for a mob group, and they were gnawing happily on chocolate eggs they'd pulled out from... wherever they stored it in those fluffy pelts. Arabelle advanced, moving to hide behind a tree, but she noticed something strange. They all had their backs to a moderate-sized rock, facing outwards with their ears perked.

Well, they looked alert and a little defensive. Maybe news of a certain small purple-haired girl had spread across the bunny-dom of Floor 11's largest [Garden].

She called forth Amaterasu's flames and burst from her cover, sprinting forward. Almost immediately, the [Easter Bunnies] jumped to attention and began to hop behind their rock. But if bare fists could break a giant boulder, a mere pebble by comparison was no match to Arabelle's strongest [Sword Art].

It didn't even give any resistance. Her first swing left the shelter in pieces, her second swing cut the hiding bunnies' HP in half, her third and fourth prevented two of the small mobs' from getting closer to attack — but that didn't stop the pair who leaped higher than the other two and kicked and punched, breaking past her guard and taking points off her HP.

Really though, she cast a very quick glance at the shattered rock and had to hold herself back from laughing. Arabelle didn't want to be mistaken for a psychopath more than she already was with this bloody (okay, not really) Easter egg hunt.

As soon as the counterattack was over with, Arabelle circled the mobs and rounded them up. It took three more swings and a strong slam to the ground before all that was left of the four (and the rock) were pieces of data fragments and the spoils of combat.

Shucks, drained again!

She'd only done three rounds of combat, but she was beginning to feel hints of exhaustion. Of course, she wasn't too tired yet; it only lasted for as long as her energy was on the lower levels and practically vanished when it shot back up to a full bar after a while, but experience told her that if she kept this up for much, much longer, that fatigue would be felt even at full EN levels. That was just how things worked, and if anything, Arabelle should admittedly have already felt more exhaustion from swinging a big scythe around.

Well, once again, she had nothing left to do but catch her breath and gather. So gathering again she did. It was better use of her time than sitting beneath the shade and watching the clouds lazily like she had observed some nearby players doing.

...it looked tempting though.

Materials and chocolate eggs... where else to find them and how else to describe gathering them? Arabelle must only have been sticking to the usual places because she had absolutely no idea how she would narrate picking up four eggs and another performer crystal from the grass any different.

But this was probably more than enough to spark her interest in crafting once again. Arabelle had reached forty T2 materials already, and that was around the same amount she had collected when she went down to the caves on a dedicated gathering trip. And she wasn't even done yet. She'd gotten stronger, that much was obvious, and she was only glad the results of her efforts manifested in a more crucial time. She smiled, a little distantly, as she absently watched the reflection of the [Garden], the plants waving gently with the breeze, and the movement of unnamed players some ways off.

It will be dyed a pure black soon.

How would he like more debuff crystals...?

She dismissed the crystal to her inventory and picked up another. Then, almost routinely, she looked around with appraising red eyes, and found a little bundle of eggs just a few steps away. She gently picked them off the ground, brushing the dirt and soil away, and dropped then into her inventory.

What were those NPC kids going to do with these eggs, anyway...? The event information had only stated that players should trade them over for special prizes, and they'd said the same when she paid them a visit — but one thing that stood out was that they were labelled as sweet-tooths.

Were they actually going to eat them?

Arabelle could only imagine the more questionable methods other players used to farm the event currency. And her own. She might be a little comfortable taking a bite from the eggs the event-limited mobs dropped, they looked clean enough, but not even a double Fallen enhancement would be enough to convince her to try the ones she just picked up from the ground.

This next batch...

She hadn't tossed them so much as a glance, but they were already running away from her. At full speed. Perhaps they smelled the bunny blood on her coat or something. These small bunnies were scared — and they were scared enough that they didn't even mind leaving behind the chocolate eggs they had worked to gather on the grassy spot they had been standing in earlier.

Well, Arabelle didn't mind the eggs either.

If the event currency was the only thing she wanted, she wouldn't have bought a Prosperity buff from Cordelia now, would she? Or even tried the combat. Out of combat guaranteed a steady flow of event currency, albeit it was a little slow and boring, but she could have handled a boring job all for a unique reroll. Nope, she wanted chocolate eggs and everything that came with the combat.

So Arabelle resummoned her scythe and gave chase.

And there was her first and only miss for the day. One had been more alert, more cautious with whatever warning the little mobs received, and it had raced farther ahead of the others. When she swung her scythe the first time, she felt it cleave through all but the escaped bunny and before she could chase it any further, one of the three had hopped forward to attack her. The other two formed a sort of defensive 'wall.'

Were they... protecting it?

How courageous. And sweet.

Arabelle wanted her loot though. The sharp point of her blade pierced through the attacking bunny's chest with ease, then she twirled with all the grace of a ballerina and slashed the other two in half. Now all that was left was the one she'd missed, and finding no other alternative, the last Easter Bunny decided to go down fighting.

Like she'd said before. These things packed quite the punch.

Facing a single bunny like this... kind of reminded her of the Easter event of last year. The quest mob had been a cute bunny too, though it was a much larger than the mob in front of her now and packed more of a punch when matched against her T1 self. From the start, the rewards hadn't been too impressive. And there were her incompetent teammates. The amount of times they missed the quest mob. And the quest mob's unnatural speed — a very annoying challenge for a girl who'd just wanted to get it over with.

But while this was technically stronger, it was hardly on the same level.

Because after she shook the fluffy creature off and sent it flying, its body slammed against a tree trunk and it slid down to the ground. It struggled to get up. Arabelle inched closer, never dropping her guard, and the small bunny scrabbled uselessly at the soil until it finally gave in to look up at her pleadingly with big watery eyes.

Poor thing.

Arabelle slammed her scythe on its head with the full force of a [Sword Art] and claimed her loot.

It might have been a heartless massacre of adorable fluffy creatures...

But Arabelle had all she wanted — and more! With her energy drained again and the exhaustion a tad bit worse than last time, she finally went and rested beneath the shade of a tree. Red eyes scoured the area one last time, finding only chocolate eggs and materials, then quickly snapped to the center of her vision as a series of notification chimes bounced about her hearing. Messages received mid-battle. Arabelle checked the sender and flicked open the PM window.
