[F1][SP] The First Few Lessons Are Free

Recommended Posts

Hinatao was on a quest. Specifically it was “The First Few Lessons Are Free” quest that people had recommended she get out of the way before moving on with harder missions. Apparently there was no danger so she had gone out from the town and was doing some non combat gathering. If she understood right, all she had to do was keep looking around and the game system would roll a die and hopefully she would get the thing she was looking for. So that’s what she was doing. She was walking through the wild and searching as hard as she could for some unspecified materials. She wondered if everyone could see them or if it was just her because it was her quest. Either way at least she knew what she was doing and with that she could hopefully get some work done. “Come on, any day now,” she would say as she kept looking.

Hinatao looked around as she continued searching for the unspecified material. Around the fields there were many busy workers. There were a couple players thrown in here and there. Some of them were doing other quests and one even looked like had an item to help users to melt stuff, and nanother seemed to have an item that had made it easier for people to move stuff, but by and large they were the minority. Most of the players were just regular people or NPCs doing regular people and NPC stuff. Poor people mostly, but this was hardly the time to start thinking about the socioeconomic status of video game players. Hinatao let out a deep sigh and looked at the clock on her display. She wanted time to pass quickly because she was desperate to find this new material! Where was it? It had to be around here somewhere or another.

Hinatao took a break for about five minutes of searching. She had found her first item and was eager to find her next one too. After her break she went right back too it. She had debated changing her clothes but she was just going to be wearing the same clothes as the last time she had searched and would just be standing around fashionably looking about as usual. As she tried hard to find some more of the materials she needed she thought back to a friend she used to have. He had promised to explain some things to her, so she was understandably anxious for him to explain things but he had just told her to do this mission because it would all make sense or something. There was a lot of things she wanted to ask on top of what she had already mentioned. Hopefully they could find a nice quiet spot to discuss away from prying ears.

Hinatao was surprised that she had found yet another material. That meant that there were only a few left that she needed. She saw someone else searching for materials too and felt a connection with that person deep down. She wondered if the boy knew where the rest of them were. The boy waved to her and to her, this implied that they had met or were at least acquainted to some degree. Her spirits rose up and nodded, “Good luck to you too.” She didn’t think anything less of this boy for operating out on his own because that’s what she was doing herself. That was probably the best way to operate if one dealt in the business of keeping to oneself. She would follow the boy to the next location and would be trusting his sense of direction. She had no idea if he knew where to go but honestly she didn’t thin it mattered anymore. She just kept a lookout for the material she needed.

“How many times do we have to tell you!” Sharp nails dug into Hinatao’s shoulder, her small body being shaken violently, “You hesitate, you die! We don’t know how we can be any clearer when you simply won’t listen!”

Hinatao didn’t know how she had let her guard down enough to get snuck up on. From what she knew, she was a good hider. Yet hiding hadn’t done any good to someone who was so good at tracking people down.

“What do you want,” she pouted to the other person. She had no idea what they wanted. Her bully had come with a crew of bullies hell bent on making life difficult for the youngster. Something about getting hurt by someone older than her really bugged Hinatao. She was on a simple task of gathering and she still was getting bullied out here. She checked her surroundings, still no sign of the material she was searching for… Was she going to have any better luck this time?

“Yes, I found one!” Hinata shouted as she rose up off the ground with the material she needed in her hand. She had gathered so much and now she only needed one more. However she was quickly shoved to the ground, hands splaying out on the cold, black stone mingled in with the grassy field as she caught herself. The bully continued to shout her disdain, the deep resounding chest cavity that she had at her disposal amplifying the sound as it bounced out of her mouth, “You stupid girl! What will I be telling your mother, hm? Shall we tell them both you are too weak -too pathetic to call yourself someone worth living? I can’t believe we’ve spent all this time trying to get you to go do something and all you end up doing is taking a task to go gather some basic ingredients. You should be ashamed at yourself!”

Hinata tried her best to keep the words out of her ears. She just searched around and hoped that another ingredient that she needed popped up. She could only handle so much...

Failure. Despite Hinata’s searches there was no ingredient to find. She had been lucky to find the first few and now it looked like she needed to move on and search for some other. The boy she had been following all this time had conveniently disappeared among the ruckus. All that was left was Hinata, her ingredients that she had found, and this group of bullies. In her desperation she scampered away. She just needed to find a few more in order to consider her introductory task complete. Yet even though she searched she was getting shouted at.  “You think too much for your own good. Use your instinct. Think about survival! These are the only things what will keep you alive.” Hinata took a moment to look back at the bully woman who was peered down at her. Hinata couldn’t help but shudder as she looked at her. This really sucked.

(didn't realize I already have the 5 materials I need. oops)

With a stroke of luck she found the last thing she needed. Now that Hinatao had all the materials she needed, she needed to go deliver them. It was a simple task really. Just go to the man’s workshop and tell him that she had gotten the things he required. Then she would hopefully be able to help make a concoction or something. She was fuzzy on the details. She had to run all the way back through the plans, trying her best to ignore the bullies that came after her, continually yelling at her as she went. She did her best to push those mean words out of her mind and not flinch so hard when long hands stretched out and began to pull at her and drag her by the ankles, clawing into her calves. She shouted at Hinatao because it gave her pleasure. Anything that caused a low ranking person like Hinatao pain was good.

When finally Hinata screamed for help she finally got some respite. It was against the rules to be hurting her and truly it really didn’t hurt. It was more of a fear factor than anything else because even a giant scary monster was terrifying to look at even if it didn’t hurt you. That was one of Hinata’s problems with taking on bigger and bigger tasks. Things like getting scared by monsters or by bad people always seemed to set her back. As she screamed the woman released her, yellow eyes cold and irritated, waving towards one of her group members that consisted of a bunch of boys that had nothing to do but follow orders. “Come on, I just want to go deliver my ingredients,” Hinata pleaded. She really hated to be stuck here with these people. She wanted to go, to be free. Couldn’t they mind their own damn business?

Hinata had run from bullies in search of refuge. She had tried to talk to this random pink haired girl in the plains, in an attempt to make the bullies back off if they caught up. But the pink haired girl wanted nothing to do with her. Hinata got a moment of peace and then sprinted away before the bullies could catch hold of her again. She went all the way to the workshop that she needed to go to and then she closed the door behind her. “Almost, done, with the first part of my task,” she said with heavy breaths. She could feel her elevated heart rate, could almost smell the sweat coming off her body. She had the ingredients she gathered in hand, all she had to do was walk over and give them to the person who gave her this task… How hard could that possibly be?

Hinata calmed her nerves. She had to tell herself that there wasn’t any danger here. She was safe. None of this mattered right? She just breathed heavily so that she could lower her heart rate and focus. “Right, just hand in the materials. He can’t yell at me, I’m not even late…” She walked forwards but then she heard a sound. The knob was turned and a figure hesitated in the frame before stumbling idly into the open space. It was dark, pitch black, and with her vision Hinata could see that whoever this person was, they did not share her feelings towards being here. She was trying her best to be calm and a bunch of people just kept trying to get in her way and distract her. Why was this so hard? She shuffled into the corner and tried to figure out if she needed to worry or not.

The people that entered were bumbling and vulnerable. It seemed she had lost her bullies but now there were these new people that scared her to some degree. The most noticeable person who endered was a boy. His head was turning every which way as he tried to pinpoint the person he had come here to see. Hinata sensed the caution in the new arrival and quickly began to sneak around the edge of the room so that she could stay hidden for a while. She bumped into a countertop and fell to the floor. Then she had begun to get to her feet, out of breath when the door swung open and the person she was here to see walked in. Maybe he had a routine because she would have assumed that he should have already been in here. “Oh thank god, I can finally finish this task and move onto the next one.”

Hinata watched as the person who told her to gather all these materials reached into his pocket and produced a dagger, pointing it at the terrified face of Hinata. He then held it up to her so that she could examine it, “Don’t be scared. You’re going to use this to chop up the ingredients. Then throw them into the pot. It’s simple but all you have to do is make sure you cut it up into thin slices. Hopefully things will work out and we will have a brew that’s worth selling to the public,” he clicked his tongue in distaste, “Are you done yet? It doesn’t take that long.”

Hinata, not quite sure how this mattered for this lesson, or why she was being introduced to the art of slicing ingredients at all, remained silent. She doubted talking to this man even mattered in the scheme of things. He would probably never be a part of her life again.

Hinata went to chop the ingredients and felt a gross substance squirt out as she sliced away. Inside was a tiny bug that crawled out and scared of. “He’s young and starved, but even one that size will do. If you didn’t know, we want the bugs that live inside the ingredients, not the ingredients themselves. As formidable as any small bug, they also have the ability to make a special juice when they’re crushed. Have at it then, crush them nice and smoothly.” The words struck something inside the young Hinata, and she straightened her stance, squaring her shoulders and wiped off the very blaring discomfort off her disgusted face. She watched as the man produced a small stone which he gave to her to do the grinding. This was gross. Too gross. Hinata didn’t want to do this anymore! It was just so… eww… Who signed her up for this anyway?

“Ah Hinata, glad you’re back. It’s time to use the ingredients. I’ve prepared the rest of them so all you have to do is toss them together and hope for the best. Don’t worry about failing, it’s not the end of the world and we have plenty. More than plenty. Just use a careful hand and hope that things turn out okay.” The boss pointed her in the direction of all the many different things that needed to be combined and she got to work. It was easy to do and Hinata quickly got the hang of tossing things together. All she really had to worry about was things going wrong. If she failed, well that would be a pretty major hit to her self esteem at this point in the day after all that had happened… How many more hours would she spend here? The time was ticking much too slowly.

Success. Hinata hadn’t felt success all day unless you counted all that gathering she had done earlier. She had also outrun her bullies but she didn’t consider that much of a success either. She didn’t notice that the bullies were just outside the building, watching her when she celebrated and tossed the rock at her. The rock missed, but it made Hinata turn. Then, she headed towards the door, leaving a surprised boss in her wake. It took only a few moemnts before Hinata was launching herself towards where the stone had landed, wondering if it was some kind of clue.

“Who left that window open?” her boss asked absent mindedly, “anyway I need you to go to the workshop of an associate of mine. It’s the same one you visited across the street. I think he may have use for you when you have some free time. It’ll look good on you if you broaden yourself.”

Hinata didn’t want to leave, with her apathetic boss that didn’t care that there were bullies outside waiting for her. She ran out of the door and hoped they wouldn’t catch up. But the bullyies were right behind her. Although it was clear she had the advantage. It wasn’t like they could really hurt her out in public like this, especially in an area considered safe for young people such as herself. The worst they could do was verbally accost her or something. She kept the rock in her hands though, in case she needed to throw it at them. She just needed to make it across the street in order to see what the next guy wanted with her. Hopefully he would just tell her to go home because he had been pretty rude when she had stopped by earlier. Maybe his tune would change when he found out that Hinata was there on official business.

Hinata wanted to escape, she really did. But pain seared her cheekbone, and she fell upon her back, immediately gripping her face. Wait, no, it didn’t actually hurt, but it stung her feelings instead of her skin. The bully’s teeth were bared and he looked more animalistic than human, trying to intimidate someone he could barely relate to. Anger at being attacked rose within the young girl and she rolled to a crouch, and uncoiled like a loaded spring. If only they were allowed to fight here, Hinata would have went at it and fought as hard as she could, but she kept the rules in mind and redirected her momentum across the street. She opened the door to the blacksmith’s store and closed it behind her. She knew the bullies didn’t want to come in here and cause trouble. They’d just wait for her to come back out to resume their torture.

“Did you want to see me?” Hinata asked the blacksmith. She knew already that she wasn’t a fan. But she was here in the shop looking for what she presumed was another introductory quest. She needed some more of those because she didn’t have any reason not to be doing them. Lots of money for some chump change work was nothing to scoff at. She didn’t know who would be here from the player side of things because she hadn’t even looked. She had a gut feeling that a friend or two would show up because some people she knew were trying to get into questing now. If she had friends come then their mere presence were to remind her about the job she wanted to perform. All this persistence was definitely enough to get her to get into the idea and she had to applaud them for that. But maybe she was assuming too much.

She walked around and it suddenly looked like her quest was complete. She was supposed to talk to this blacksmith and she’d done so and now it was all over. She saw a quest marker showing her that it was time to accept a new quest and she guessed this was meant to introduce new players to a bunch of new quests to get her going. She wasn’t going to talk to this guy quite yet but she would be back at some other date to take this new quest on. Taking on multiple quests in one sitting was too much for her gentle heart to handle.

At least she was dressed the part this time. She brought her best clothes along with her and did her best to avoid looking like fool this quest. She wasn’t keen on having to do a full body cleaning but luckily in this world her clothes were never really dirty.
