[SP] Dreams and Beginner quest 2

Recommended Posts

taking this quest

Hinatao had finished up the first beginner quest and went to take on the second one. She went to the workshop and accepted the quest but wasn't awake enough to do the quest quite yet. She laid down and took a nap. Hinatao needed a dream. A dream to bring her away from the boring grind of getting eggs and fighting inane enemies for all eternity. She fell in her dream. The fall seemed endless. And for good reason, there was a very great distance separated the dream world from the real world. To fall so low, you have to know how to be patient, it seemed. During the first hours, Hinatao persisted in her fight. She fought the invisible force that pushed her further down. She uses the strength of her wings to try to slow down first, before beaten vigorously to recover. She could put all her determination in this battle, nothing helped. She could not stop falling. Too proud to accept this reality, she continued to oppose the punishment of whatever madman put her in this dream to lose consciousness under excessive effort. No person before her had permission to tread the dead lands of a hellish land.

This was probably what scares the young Hinatao the most: there was absolutely nothing down there. At least, for the moment. They didn’t send her there to die, but to accomplish an ungrateful task of which she does not yet know anything. It was certain that it has something to do with humanity. Everything to always have something to do with that for too long. The heat spreads more vividly in Hinatao's body. She felt a strong pain grow far too fast for her to hold back a cry of pain. Her skin turns red, melted under the speed she has now acquired. Her feathers on her wings granted by the dream were the first to ignite, pushed her to flap her wings in vain. Then, plates of flesh burn one after the other. Her face was not spared, making her now blind to her next landing. The minutes that follow seem like an eternity.

Unable to breathe through the flames that consume her body, she goes from a semi-awake state to a painful unconsciousness. What awakens her completely was the crossed of the thick clouds that cloud the entrance to the heavens. Her body hits hard on the serenity of cloud cover before it spread apart. Her fall did not stop while she realized for the first time that the air was saturated with dirt of the town. She always falls faster now than the soil of this world called her. She ended up brutally crashing and she screamed under the terrible pain of her body that after all this time. Silence returned as she painfully opened her eyes. The dust particles that she had lifted from the ground under the impact were still suspended above her. The dust that covered her were, moreover, gradually all spreading so many undesirable particles. She understands why she was unable to breathe in the ambient air. Reflexively, she orders her left hand to cover her.

She did not move. She was too damaged to do it. Not to mention the frightened amount of dirt that weighed her down. No doubt she was grounded for a little while. Coughed still louder, she thought of a way to go back up. Hinatao remains persuaded at this time that she could always force her way into the society of men, even a terrible SAO player like her, so young and naive. For the moment she lets unconsciousness seize her again, she fiercely stared at the luminous hole through which she penetrated the clouds. Despite the parasitic dust, she always clearly saw the rays of divine light from the outside. This was the vision that remains to this day the most painful of her life. When she came to, the dust particles almost all landed on the floor. Her first reflex was to look straight towards the light tunnel. To her surprise, the clouds were engulfed her exit door.

There remains only a thin white ray that was still noticeable. She tried to sit up, felt her spine struggle to a significant degree. The vertebrae have not yet wound up completely straightened. Stubborn, she forces the movement. The heaviness of her gifted wings played her a trick and what had begun to repair herself. She fell painfully on her back, felt a taste of blood mingle with that of dust on her tongue. She was not used to being in such bad shape. She has a hard time believing she still has her vitality since she was so destroyed by the fall. A divine force pushed her down, certainly. Would it be her own who wanted to keep her grounded to look at her only chance to disappear before her eyes? It took her two full hours to feel her body strong enough to allow her to crawl through the carpet of dirt.

Last night Hinatao slept like a rock during her horrible dream. She had tried to gain strength so that it didn’t tire her during the day. It almost made her forget that she had a job to do. She had to go out and kill five boars in the local area and collect the goodies that they were jealously guarding. That thought alone was enough to give her some hope. She went out to find these pups and carried her weapon and armor on her as she went. She realized that she had slept right where she had been given the task so all she had to do was travel away from this place she was at and she could go fight the boards, get some drops, and call it a day. Life was simple sometimes. She exited the building and then broke out into a job, headed towards her destination.

Hinatao woke up and began her day. Hinata didn’t get much time to talk with her friends as she might have liked. There was so much to ask him about but he went on and pretty much did a big chunk of the current quest by himself. He left Hinatao pretty much sitting around with little else but to chat and keep a watch out for anyone else that might try to take the quest so that they could party up. “Okay, see ya, I’ll keep an eye out for any others that might come by,” Hinata said while easing back onto her elbows. She had doubts that there would be any more trouble today. “So, how are things? Sorry we didn’t get much time to talk last time but it looks like we got all day now. You got family here?” Hinata yawned, covering her mouth with her hand and looked at the girl she was standing next to. She wasn’t scared of looking in her eyes so much anymore, so she’d look right at them, if she had the same feelings.

After her friends left there was one suspicious person sneaking around the edge of their vision. He was the backup sent to annoy her since the first round of bullies failed. It would be up to Hinatao and her friend to notice him. The bully was very worried about how there were still two of them there. Had she been the only one this would have been a cake walk because he conveniently left. Nobody had told the poor bully that there would be people on the lookout. Hinatao was clearly worried if he was scared enough to make friends for this kind of protection. It was enough to make him regret even accepting this task. He slowly crept along a row of rocks and tried to look inconspicuous but though he was in a bath towel it was hard to hide the massive sword strapped to his back as he sweated.

“What do you think of that guy?” Hinata asked, pointing at him, “why bring a sword to a bathhouse?” They were indeed on the roof of a bathhouse. Hinatao was slacking a little before the start of her quest. She wasn’t one to accuse without cause but nobody else here had had weaponry except the last assassin. It would be a damn shame if she had to test out her new dagger skills on him. She hadn’t personally experienced loss in this game yet, but if her friend said it would happen it probably would. Losing her confidence would be quite troublesome unless she had a motivational song on hand. There was still so much she didn’t know like the risks and costs. There was too much to think about and it all distracted her from doing what she should’ve done thirty seconds ago – accuse this bully of ruining her day. But she decided not to and left for her mission. She had some boars to kill.

That didn’t sound like a group pf people that cared about her as a person. They probably just saw her as a tool. These lessons left imprints on the young Hinatao’s mind and made it difficult to reason with staying aligned to such a group. The young lady did not have a clear conscience. She tirelessly tortured her mind to know if everything had gone well and that nobody had made a mistake, but of course nobody could answer her questions. It was not that she had no faith in her abilities, but anyone could make mistakes, and she was the first. Her doubts still gnawed at her like they always did because she was still a child, but now she remembered. She remembered one important thing. She was still her, and she was tied to nobody in here. With that, she saw her first boar of the day. “Let’s fight.”

She swung, and hit the first boar with her dagger dealing 4 damage. Luckily the boar missed.

Hinatao snapped herself from her thoughts and found her first enemy. It was a little boar that was standing next to what she needed to get. There was no telling if she would get it, or if she was going to have to put up a bigger fight to get it. She had drawn her blade, attacked with it and sliced into the boar. However it wasn’t down for the count. It got back up and charged at her just like it had done last time. There were lots of boars in this area so she would have plenty to do if she was going to find all the tusk needed for this task. “Have at ye,” she shouted jokingly as the boar that had no chance at winning charged her again. She just missed it with her blade and it rammed into her, though the damage was completely mitigated by her armor.

Hinatao grunted when she realized that she would have to try again to down the boar. Hinatao used her footwork to reorient herself and take the boar head on. She needed to hit it one more time to kill it. Then maybe she could gather what she needed and be on her way. This time, she swung and the boar spilled its guts. It was gone now and she just had to see if she could find some tusk around here that she could use. She was in luck. She found some that was salvageable although it had been trampled during the fight. She sighed and swung her arms tiredly. She still hadn’t warmed up because if she had she probably would have just killed the boar in one fell swoop. All was well though, she needed to get the practice in. There were plenty more boars around to fight and all of them wanted her dead.

Hinatao pocketed the tusk and then moved on. She saw another boar coming at her and she slashed at that one too. “You guys are really guarding your stuff well aren’t you,” she said with a hint of boredom. As she slashed, she noticed she had a visitor. “What do you want,” she asked the newcomer. He had red eyes, eyes that paralyzed her where she stood. She couldn’t describe how incredibly impossible it was to move. She panted and was finally let go of his stare. “What in the world was that?” she asked with heavy heaves between her breaths. “You froze up in the midst of combat. You’re going out on your own and you don’t even know how to combat?” Hinatao shook her head, “what are you talking about? I know how to fight now.” “If you know it then you should know that any time you can’t move your body you’re being too tense.”

With what she needed in hand, Hinatao turned to the next boar and let out an attack to slash at it. She had gotten so distracted last time that she and the boar had missed each other in some freak occurance. She shook her head and looked over at the man who was telling her this stuff that she already knew. “Just go away,” she shouted at him and then she turned back to the boar. She sliced into this boar just like the last one just as its tusks missed her. She then kicked it away in order to look back at the man who thought it a good idea to get in the middle of all this combat. “what are you still doing here, oh god. You’re not here to distract me are you?” It wouldn’t have been the first or the last time that someone tried to eat up all her time.

She performed one more practiced slash at the boar and it was now dead. She rummaged around it and pulled out a couple items that she needed to complete her gathering task. “All in good fun,” she thought as she looked around. The man was still watching her but at a distance now. It was clear that he wasn’t going to leave anytime soon. It seemed she had a moment’s reprieve in which she could rest up and look for the other boars. The boars were the guardians of the item she needed so she had to slay them, not that she particularly wanted to slay a bunch of pigs. She thought back to her village that taught her the art of using a saber. Yes, everything held together; that is why she knew without being part of the village techniques and could use them. If only everything translated this smoothly.

“Next one already?” she thought as she turned around a bend and saw another boar protecting the precious stuff that she needed. She slashed at it, intending to end this in one hit. Everything, but really all, stood. Her life had meaning. She was no longer a baby anymore but she was still a child. Here out gathering she was a child with no meaningful life; no. She remembered. She remembered everything that had forced her not to accept others, to trust only a few people. Like this man who kept looking at her. “Do you remember what I told you before? I’m not leaving you until you demonstrate you can fight without freezing up. It’s not safe to be out here when you could be paralyzed and killed in an instant. Try this.” He jumped at her and made her freeze but she simply shook herself out of it. “I got it, just go!”

The one good thing that came out of this was knowing what to do if she ever got paralyzed. She had a feeling that it would come in handy next time she was in a battle. But she had other things to worry about. She ran up to the boar that she happened to miss and tried to hit it again. She was getting bored of fighting boars for the tusks they guarded anyway. But she missed as it jumped out of the way just in time. She sighed and side stepped the boar’s counterattack. She wished she had a challenging opponent so that she could push her abilities to the maximum to be able to fight, for her survival. It was like that. Young woman finally remembered a great moment in her previous life. A large part of the key that would bring her the rest of her life. She’d have to try again.

This time would be better, she promised herself. The boar stood no chance at winning nor did any of its siblings. It was just sitting around waiting to be slaughtered pretty much. Even if it did hit her, it wasn’t like it was going to be able to pierce her super amazing armor. She felt her blade pass through the boar’s head and then it was over. She kicked it aside, gathered the tusks she needed and that was that. “I wonder how many more I need before I can finally be done with it.” She could have easily checked her instructions but she decided she would kill at least one more before checking. For now? She could rest easy and walk around in search of more tusks. It wasn’t like she had anything better to do. She didn’t even want to nap after that crazy nightmare from earlier or if creepy dudes were wandering around.

She thought back to her early memories as a child, a prodigy of her family and someone destined to make everyone proud. And yet here she was doing all this menial work in this quaint setting. And it was only now that she noticed it, when she had always had the clues in front of her the one who seemed to be like he had always known her during the family meetings they had had in the space of a year. She saw a striking resemblance between him and the man who was watching her. Then the flashbacks that came back to her the very moment she used her blade techniques for the umpteenth time to slice through another boar in hopes of finding the goodies it guarded. She nearly killed this boar in one blow but one blow was never enough with these types. They liked to fight and fight until it was the bitter end.

Having nearly slain the boar the only thing to do was finish it off, which she did with a follow up strike from her blade. She looked around and didn’t see any tusks though. “Ugh,” she commented with disappointment. “Okay time to check how many I need.” She brought up her task details and saw that she just needed one more boar tusk to call it a day. But there was no doubt a boar guarding it as was tradition with these kinds of menial tasks. So she went around looking for another boar but didn’t find any very quickly. This area which always seemed familiar to her seemed boring now and contained no information that she needed simply because she had already mastered this simple stuff. And then of course, her know it all friends who knew her always tried to fill her head with useless nonsense. She didn’t want to think about them.
