Off on her first hunt for a familiar. She had on her all her money, as well as a bit of materials that she had gotten in a previous quest. As she waited for the gysy to show she thought about the quest itself. It was an beginner one but  for some odd reason people said it sucked. It told her that she was in for a difficult time, though she doubted anyone would bother attacking her for no reason. No, her job was really only to find a familiar and tame it so that told her that the process was just that difficult or the people they needed to work with were real buttholes. Either way, she was ready for the challenge. Soon the gypsy came along and thus the quest started. She started her search for the familiar… immediately! But she also wanted to search for materails and eggs too so she did that on the side. Oh look, 5 eggs right there!

A meandering adventure on a hunt for not only materials but other things as well. Since she was after the familiar though primarily she used her pheremone potion. She was told it would help. Hinata was spending a lot of time lately doing all these things and it never ceased to amaze her what all the obstacles were that inevitably got in her way. Today she was gathering, but not only that she was following. There was a woman she was after, to see what she was up to. Following the woman proved to be something of a problem. Not because there were a whole lot of people out and about, but because of the brisk pace with which she walked. It did not pair well with the nearly melted snow as far as Hinata was concerned. It made her attempts at speeding up and keeping an eye on the woman a tall order in of itself. One wrongly placed foot in this uneven snow to grass to rock setting could send her falling towards the cold hard ground.

As she pursued the lady, she couldn’t help but find that it was getting incredibly difficult to gather. Having multiple objectives made it hard to do well at any of them. She stopped following that woman for a couple minutes to go gather some eggs from a nearby location but she couldn't. She decided to stay for a while but she was interrupted by a white fox that crept up on her. An enemy? This was going to be easy. She attacked it, sending over a wave of her fury that didn’t do much because all it amounted to was nicking it in the side. A fast fox, what a surprise. Why was there so much snow here anyway, wasn’t she supposed to be near a volcano? Or did she have her head on backwards? It was hard to keep her location straight when she was busy with so many different things today.

The fox thing came at her again but this time she wasn’t playing around. She used one of her more powerful attacks to hit it, knocking it to the side where it skid across the ground and couldn’t do anything but let out a whimper of pain. But it wasn’t out of the fight yet. She searched around, grabbed some hemlock and ran. She didn’t want to fight this fox. There was no incentive to. It was just battle for the sake of battle so she had to do her best to gather while she had the chance, but it was hard when something was trying to kill you. Near the walls of the trees though, the footing was a lot less slippery, so even though she began to fall, she could easily steady herself by gripping parts of the trees. Would this be enough to get out of here?

The fox didn’t give up. It continued to pursue her so she attacked it again. This one wasn’t a warning shot. She watched as the fox tumbled gain from her attack but it just came to try striking her again. It missed, because it was an inferior animal with nothing to its advantage that served only to bother her. With this assurance that she could do her task in peace, the girl spent a lot more effort into running around, speeding up as much as she could without breaking into a run, hoping to evade the beast. It was a tricky thing; running from something and tailing someone at the same time was an artform. Too close and they could spot you, noticing you’d been following them around. Then again there was always the chance that she wouldn’t be found at all. Perhaps at first they’d think it a coincidence upon seeing her but that wasn’t her focus right now.

She thought for a moment that maybe the fox was done following her but no, she still had to deal with it. Instead of waiting for it to catch up to her she charged right into it, striking it with all her might and sending it soaring through the air. Though this was also enough to stop the resilient beast. Was it so hungry that it couldn’t just find a deer or something? Why her? She wished there was some kind of defense force in this area but then they’d be on guard from that moment onwards, especially so if they had something to hide. That is not to say that Hinatao thought she deserved protection, but she would have gladly paid for safe passage. Sure, the woman was capable of defending herself but it wasn’t always worth it was it? What did she expect to gain from fighting this thing? Absolutely nothing.

More fighting ensued. It wasn’t like she could avoid it at this point. She had hurt the fox enough to make it pointless to not finish it off. She had to show at least a little bit of mercy rather than letting it bleed out and getting slaughtered by some other animals. She jumped behind a tree that fully hid her features, but it was cold out here and her shivering made it hard to actually hide. She leapt out at the fox who wasn’t fooled by her notions and hit it again. Then she retreated before it could retaliated. Such things were not uncommon. Besides, she was a fighter through and through, and from all the enemies had seen, foxes weren’t particularly dangerous in these parts. It made sense to want to avoid these things, but what could she do? She thought that the woman she was trailing was probably long gone by now. So much for that task.

She had to try hitting the fox thing again. It worked out fight except for the fact that she missed. At least the bleed kicked in. She wished she was on another material gathering quest. Except one that wasn’t really “gathering” but rather “protecting.” She thought of an idea quest. Like one where she protected a cottage from one or more bandits that were trying to take some dude’s stuff then she would be rewarded with col and some of said materials. So she had made her preparations and was sitting on the roof waiting for something to happen. But she didn’t get what she wanted. See, it was midday and the temperature was still frigid, the opposite as if she was on a vacation as didn’t want to be caught in the middle of all this when things got nasty. So, she prepared for the fox to attack her again.

“Let’s try again,” she said, activating her sword art and running at the fox. She slashed at it six times along its body creating invisible wounds, somehow. Anyway she hit finally. She just needed like one or two more hits and she would be done. She took off her glove portion of her armor off, bit her thumb to wake herself up and then she made the necessary movements to dodge the fox’s attack. She felt the cold with her exposed hand then put her glove back on, and explained the purpose of being here to herself again because she thought the reiteration would be useful for when the familiar she was after came by. She just needed to waste enough time for a familiar to wander around. She spotted a cottage in the distance. Maybe that would be a safe resting spot. She really needed one with how low energy she had.

Panting a little, she made another attack, cutting into the fox. It did some damage, but not a lot. She dropped her guard and was slashed by the fox, bringing her health bar lower. She just wanted to get to that cottage. The cottage itself was made of stone and wood and was essentially a cube 10m long on each side. The surrounding area consisted of just grass for thirty meters surrounding the cottage in all directions. The area lining the outside of this grassy radius was full of trees. A stream could be heard beyond the trees. The land was flat and sitting atop the cottage gave whoever went on it a vantage point for the surrounding area. She looked around the area for signs of danger. She would easily be able to see anything in the grassy portion of the area and would not want to get caught in another fox fight again.

She attacked the fox again, not that she thought it would do much damage. She didn’t even think its health bar went down when she struck it this time. She sighed, knowing that she hardly did any damage but at least the rng gods told her that the wolf missed her. What luck, ugh, she just wanted to rest! She had two whopping energy left and couldn’t even use sword arts. She would also look into the trees up to 100m from her current position. Now all she had to do was wait for this stupid fight to be over. She wondered if she could use another weapon other than melee ones. Were there ranged weapons in this game? She didn’t even know. She thought back to that cottage and how she would love to have a shortbow lying by her feet along with her ten arrows that she could use as deterrents if mobs got close.

Either way, spending too much on this fight too closely was a bad idea. Too far was as well, but only because it made it easier to lose track of the person you were trying to follow. The idea was to find the middle ground between the two, staying far enough behind so you wouldn’t be noticed, but close enough they would not escape your sight. She slashed at the fox again which was a tricky thing indeed. She hit it, made it bleed. Yes, it would be dead soon. Especially so when you’d lost sight of them from the start. From that moment the subtle game became something more akin to a wild goose chase, with the stalker looking franticly for their target when they reached a corner. Did they go left, or right? The fox jumped back at her and it missed. It might as well just die soon if it wasn’t going to do any more damage. What was that over there?

She cut into the fox, killing it dead. Boy that was hard, but at least she got some decent loot out of it, she thought. Maybe it was just a waste of time? How could she know? She sighed, but then she saw a cloaked figure just rounding the next corner? Right it is! Quickly now, quickly close the gap! [censored], too close! Veer off to the side, pretend to look at a wall or something while observing the target from the corner of your eye. Let them put some distance between the two of you again, then get moving once again. Slow down at corners, take an inconspicuous peek around it first, then follow them into the next street. It was a tricky thing to be sure, and Hinatao started overthinking things soon enough, second guessing herself multiple times. The movement of the hood, did it mean the girl was looking her way?

She swapped out her accuracy gear for LD gear because she wanted to be able to see more clearly. Had she seen her? No? Yes? Probably. Better wait a few moments. [censored], too long! Lost sight of her! Quick, speed up the pace! Need to catch up! [censored], she’s just behind the corner, abort! Abort! Just keep walking past that street then, but keep an eye out. She’s moving again? Good. U-turn and resume tailing. Things continued in this fashion for a while, and Hinatao was sure she’d been spotted at least a dozen times. Still, the girl did not stop to turn around and confront the girl, and Hinatao hoped that to the girl all of them kind of looked alike enough that she hadn’t noticed she’d been followed. Did it matter if she were to be discovered? Yes, yes it did. She’d just be given the cold shoulder again and the girl would make sure to shake Hinatao off her tail.

As long as she wasn’t discovered though, the girl could follow her to whatever the destination was, and trap her there. That, and there was the nagging suspicion that the girl wasn’t up to much good. Perhaps it was just Yana’s imagination, but the woman seemed to be looking around as inconspicuously as possible from time to time. It wasn’t a conscious observation though, just something nagging in the back of her mind that kept her from revealing herself. Perhaps she recognized herself in those mannerisms, as if it was her there, looking for a safe place to shift into her alter ego. She wouldn’t want to be followed then either. When two others, cloaked and hooded, joined the first girl, her suspicions were growing into the front of her mind now too, into the conscious part. It could recognize trouble, and was debating what the best course of action was.

Three times the eyes meant three times the chance of getting spotted. And if they were about to do something that shouldn’t be seen, and discovered her… It was her curiosity that kept her where she was though. Rather close to the trio, but not as close that she could hear what they were saying. And even if she could, the language they used was foreign to her. What she could do from her spot was see one adjust her cloak, a metal shimmering in the light. A blade? Hinatao frowned. This was probably going to turn ugly. Maybe she should turn around and leave. This had nothing to do with her after all. She’d lose her lead, yes, but it was better to lose a lead than to lose her life. However, it was the approaching person that kept her in place. Not an NPC, no. A girl. Another one.

This must be her lucky trail. Or unlucky trial, depending how one looked at it. Either way, it was a girl walking right into what looked to be an ambush. Hinatao scanned the area quickly, unable to spot anyone else besides the five of them. It was too early for people to be outside already. Hinatao had been on her way to the academy, where she was supposed to arrive early, but everyone else was still sleeping soundly. The perfect time for an attack. Hinatao frowned. What to do, what to do? If she stepped in, she could potentially turn the tides for the ambushed girl. She could maybe ask a favor in return for her help… On the other hand… no, these assassins probably wouldn’t share their time and secrets with the girl. She’d get rejected again and again. If she could even find them at all after this was over. If she walked up to them right after they had done their business, she’d be a witness, no doubt. But then... another fox jumped out at her. "Again?" She asked as she attacked it.

There wasn’t much to say other than she just kept beating the crap out of this fox. She finally abandoned her desire to rush the fight through. It wasn’t like she was getting mobbed by a bunch of different creatures and she really did appreciate being in the outdoors especially when she knew she wasn’t going to lose. She had no contemplation of the outside, from where she saw nothing, to turn to the other people in the area that were chosen to walk around. They were not the fastest, nor the best. They were not the ones who knew the most about the area though, but quite simply those who rallied to the cause of a certain group of people. That was none of her business though. She attacked the fox and dodged when the fox counter attacked. It wasn’t like the fox stood a chance, even though it did have a chance of crippling her if it got off a lucky shot.

She must have gotten distracted by those many people passing by because she missed completely when she attacked the fox again. She couldn’t like… not focus on the people passing through. What if one of them had it out for her? She wasn’t exactly sitting at home in her PJ’s, she was out here doing combat and vulnerable. She didn’t have any friends of family in the area and she was mostly alone, daydreaming, thinking about creating a better, less artificial, more real world. Large forces prevented this world from existing. Why? Who knows. Perhaps out of greed, perhaps out of a thirst for power. If this world was going so badly, if there was so much war, poverty and unhappiness in the world, it was not because of the criminal factions out there, as some honorless men dared to claim, no. It was the fault of only a few dozen people or even just one person in the end.

She was eager to get her shot in at the fox as she really wanted to continue thinking about the state of the world she lived in. She managed to punch her weapon right through it this time and that was enough to make it disabled for the time being, or so she thought. It came at her unexpectedly but she was still fast enough to jump back and hide in the frosty trees. She saw a vine of hemlock growing as she landed and snatched it up. That was why she was here after all. Now where was she? Ah yes, she was thinking about the system these men had implanted in the world to control it, to have a stranglehold on it. These are the people who had to be removed. The people who followed them, the system they created. They claimed to have created the perfect system for large groups to have such an advantage over smaller ones.
