A new day, a little different in fact because she was doing some crafting instead of hunting for materials like she tended to do all the time. She ventured to a place where she knew people did crafting and wandered on inside. Except while doing so she was constantly on the lookout for something useful to use. She wanted to appear resourceful when she arrived so that she could score a job… or something of that sort. She didn’t have a clue what to do for crafting, only augmenting so this was going to be a change of pace for her. She spoke with a woman inside who told her to bring her back some crafting materials and then they could get started. That sounded simple enough, she just had to start. She just went on out and started looking for some scraps that might be useable to a crafter. She didn't find anything though. She also poked her head around to find some eggs.

It wasn’t easy finding something that could be arbitrarily used for crafting. She more easily found some eggs that were sitting around. She looked out at a building in the distance. It had an angel on it, its wings were impeccable, shined with all their glory. The angel stood and smiled very tall, have never been so happy to be there. It was a very serene view and she didn’t know if she wanted to keep looking at it. She did not understand what this strange statue stood for or why it was put there. But it didn’t distract her. She kept looking around to find something worth using. But every time she kept looking back to the angel. There was a mystery in this statue’s eyes that she intends to piece together another day. For now, she wants to keep looking around and wishing she had a map to reference. She did not think this boring land was so vast but it was comprised various sections that one could easily define if they had any sense of cartography.

She eventually stumbled across some eggs along with something that she thought might be useful so she tried to see if it actually had any useful properties. She grabbed the tiny thing in her hands and glued her eyes on it before sprinting away as easily as she was used to. It did not take long to find the something to bang it against and test its durability. The item was motionless against her, her head stretched out between her arm and her chest, tried to protect herself from the gusts of wind that kept buffeting her. They were cold in this time of year. The girl was thus fully focused on her inspection of this material. Could it be used as a weapon maybe? She lingered for a long time on the perfectly smooth appearance of the material. She would not dare to ask it, as if it would be a bad omen for her.

She decided that material was worth keeping and tucked it into her pack. Now she had to go find some more. She didn’t want to return empty handed so she would find several more things that were worth keeping. She stepped around and found a metal bar that might be useful for something. She smashed it against the ground and it was working out just fine. She didn’t use her full strength, but it looked good enough. She crosses the chain to discover what seemed to her a giant labyrinth, so vast that she did not even see the end as she scrutinizes the horizon. She caught some eggs in the corner of her eye and added them to her basket. As she looked around for something else to test the bar against, she did not know what this structure contains and how useful it was. She only suspected that it was not there by chance. Since she was confident enough in the strength of her arms, the tired girl began to trek to the building and tested the bar against its metal. It worked just fine!

She then looked up to the building and saw something on the roof that might have been useful to her along with some eggs perched up there. She scaled the wall relatively easily and then looked around. It looked like there was a bunch of junk up here, what luck! She rummaged around and soon enough she had a bunch of things in her arms that she tested one by one by chucking them off the building. If it broke, she wouldn’t keep it obviously and if it didn’t break then she would consider it. At the end she ended up with one chunk of metal that she thought was best of all of them and she kept it. She didn’t need much more now. She, however, did not expect to see the first signs of spring come so early and there was a light shower that made her wet. She knew she should have brought an umbrella on her journey.

"No eggs around here," she noted as she walked around. She ended up spending a lot of time on the roof and she didn’t find much else that was useful. She rummaged through random junk but none of it seemed very durable or useful in any way. It was all well though. She found herself so easily unable to move a lot of the objects or even feel them so much because they were attached to the building and seemed important. She stareed at the clouds as she was recalled to the ground by the owner of the shop who was a little annoyed that she was up there making a ruckus. She descended again without control, unable to properly control her descent after tripping over the ledge. But the fall didn’t hurt. She was able to brace herself and all was well in the end. She was able to avoid falling too quickly but when she rolled on the ground she rolled over a rock and that happened to hurt.

She did not have enough agility to succeed in her intended maneuver so she slipped. Right onto some eggs which she tucked away. Instead of falling against one of the walls of the giant crack, she fell directly into it. It went from a dimly lit blue sky to dark abysses streaked with red as if the cured dust that constitutes the soil of this world remained burned beneath the surface. She looked around and surprisingly she found a pretty shiny rock down here that was actually something interesting that she thought the crafter might think was useful. It was a new concept to her, finding shiny rocks in the ground, but if it worked it worked. Since she did not know how much time she had before reached the bottom of this cave, the young girl applied all her strength to get closer to the nearest wall.  As soon as she came into contact with the ashy rock she freed herself from the pit and climbed on out like nothing had ever happened.

Despite her efforts to look for and find more useful materials, she failed to find anything useful for quite some time afterwards. Nothing else seemed that interesting or useful around here that wasn’t obviously belonging to someone else or just not hers to take. She just wanted something to create even a tiny crack in a rock or something. Seeing the rocky soil that awaits her in the minutes that follow, the girl tries a last effort to influence her fate. A crevice was emerged just below her. If she manages to steer her fall against a wall, she had a chance to slip into a nook in the ground and find something in there. She doubted there was something in there but still, it was worth a look. She therefore carried her weight in a specific direction to allow her to change course. It did not work as well as she wanted.

She kept going along and failed to find anything useful. She tested out some random junk on some ice that still hadn’t melted from the winter and none of it helped her out very much. The ice was strangely resilient. A few nervous beats allow her to finish breaking the unwanted ice but in turn it destroyed what she hoped to use later. She widens her eyes as she sees the ground beneath her suddenly drop. Was it somehow connected to the ice? Rather than trying to fight to fall, she jumped to the side and scampered up to the ground level. The residual speed made it easy to slip a few meters before coming to a complete stop. Tired and panting, she let the blood flow before moving slowly. Her bag was damaged considerably. The clouds covering the sun light did not allow her to be certain, but she was sure all this slipping around was going to make her need a new bag soon. At least she found some eggs laying next to her!

She sighed and though she did keep looking around she decided that she wasn’t going to find anything anyway so why bother. She kicked her feet around and wondered if the crafter was going to even want to teach her after taking so much time to do what they wanted. Destiny. The word stuck to her, and it bolstered her resolve and determination. She knew that she could do this if she put her mind to it. She truly believed, more than anything she thought was possible to believe, that this was where she was meant to be and she could do this small fetch task without having a bunch of people riding her ass about how long she was taking to go find some useful stuff. A smile spread across her face as she rose from her seated position and set off again to find something. She couldn’t give up, not now.

As she kept wandering around and searching, she ran into someone that had a rather interesting title. He had a pin on his chest that said “dean” so she wondered if this was his name or just his title. It was his title. She had to ask him to verify this information. "Dean, it is such an honour to meet you.” “Please, the pleasure is all mine." His smile was genuine but there was something about his eyes that offput her. He was not a well known figure, but he had a title for a small school that he ran with the help of a few others. There wasn’t much to it other than that. She wondered why he was even here instead of going on expeditions traveling around to understand the more about his field since there was a lot for an educated person like him to do with his life instead of strolling around out here.

However when the man started talking some more she felt a warm rush of respect and sheepishness, as if he was thinking too highly of himself and was going out of his bounds. He beckoned for her to come have a seat with him She walked over and took the offered seat and waited patiently for him to tell her something important. As she sat she looked around. She didn’t want to get too distracted. She had things to look for and even more importantly, someone waiting for her to get back to work. She didn’t want to be too slack offish in this environment. She expected him to question her but his straightforwardness surprised her. Not that it should have. He asked about her age and education to which she didn’t have much to talk about. It was a very uncomfortable conversation. She was not very happy with the direction it was going either so she debated just leaving.

As soon as she walked away the same old man from before caught up to her. He paused, partially for dramatic effect and partially because he barely breathed through the whole beginning of his proposal last time and he was eager to keep talking to her. He kept eye contact with her, and because she was more inexperienced with these kinds of things, his excitement bled across their conversation. She could feel it, and he did not know, making it even stranger for her to make sense of what was happening. She sighed and said, “sorry, but I’m not interested. I have some stuff to do now if you don’t mind…” “Actually I’m pretty important so I’m sure anyone would be willing to let you have a break if it’s to talk about education young lady. Give up these violent and time killing ways and come get some education so when your exciting times are over you can go about with a proper career.”

“See, just listen to what’s possible. We discovered a couple new things so with some rather educated guesses and, what I can only assume was a stroke of luck, we put together a basic primer for deciphering the environment around us.” But she wasn’t interested anymore. “Dean, teacher, whatever you are, please believe me when I tell you that I’m not interested.” She turned and jogged away. She found a couple things that she had been looking for, but she just wanted to avoid getting roped into another conversation. It raised gooseflesh on her arms to know that he could be lurking right around the corner with another proposal that she wasn’t interested in. And so, armed with that knowledge, she worked out a path that would avoid him entirely. There was no way he was going to follow her forever. And if he did, well she would have a word with some higher ups about that.

She finally escaped the man and could go back to full time looking for more things that the crafters might enjoy. Things that she could learn to turn into useful items and equipment that all could use. Or something that could make her have an easier time in battle. There were just so many possibilities that she didn’t want to give up. She wondered if that dean was a noble from a notoriously wealthy family or something. Him being a patron of education would assert to his new constituents that he valued their education and future, and it allowed him to pass on his knowledge in these trying times. She didn’t dislike his goals or ideals, but she didn’t want to commit to something like what he was wanting and giving up her life as it was. Oh well, she couldn’t always have nice and conflict free days. Every single day of her life seemed to have something going wrong in it.

After looking around for another half hour she find the final piece. It completely filled her pack with materials and she was going to go back to the crafters now to turn them in and then be taught how to make stuff with the junk she found. It was nothing special in reality but for this young woman, anything would be interesting and exciting compared to wandering around and gathering herbs all day. It was enough to make someone this young tired and bored with her life. But still, she showed excessive politeness was deemed awesome by most of her superiors. She walked along and noticed some more junk along the way which she held in her hands since her bag was full. Then she returned to the area where she was going to be doing the crafting so she could finally get her lesson. Hopefully she was going to put all this time to good use.

Making the thing the crafters wanted her to was not exactly the easiest thing in the world which was why she failed. It appeared to be at first, but it was clear that it was going to take a lot more than just mashing things together to make something memorable. The people she was working with in this laboratory were more than kind enough to help her out, but she was still young and green and everything that professional had to be when they first started their craft. She hadn’t thought such a thing would be acceptable in this kind of setting but the people were very accepting of her newbishness especially since she was doing this for what was propbably the first time. Then again, this was a modern age where many people had done much harder things than just collect and mash things together as far as she knew. The girl was young and… well, she hadn’t been groomed for this kind of work over the years.

“Okay, just try again dear. There’s no need to feel sad and there are plenty more materials available if you can’t finish on your own with what you used.” They were working with heat and metals, something that would ruin the other if she messed up, which she had done spectacularly. She tried again though, to make something worthwhile from the materials she had found but they just melted again and became useless puddles instead of enhanced materials. It was unorthodox, definitely. The girl wondered if this arrogance of hers thinking she could succeed and flout her success after following the proper procedures would result in a negative reputation for herself. Nevertheless, it was done now. Failure just meant she was going to be able to do better on the next attempt. She tossed the materials in the tin can to her left and then got back to work, furrowing her brow as she concentrated.

It was time to succeed, she thought to herself. How could she fail three times in a row when the saying was third time’s the charm? She frowned as she worked and asked, “so what’s the impact of your research here in the lab? Why does it exist?” The worker said, “regardless of the impact our research could have on the world, the potential ramifications of not researching puts us at a disadvantage compared to our adversaries. The risks of not pursuing science are substantial.” She spoke slowly, forming her words carefully. She needed to impress upon the young crafter the impact of doing things properly and taking everything into account. “It is not normally something I would entrust to someone who has not even yet completed formal education, but we understand that you are a special case and a beginner in these sorts of things.” She was very understanding and didn’t mind helping anyhow. That was probably why she succeeded this time!

Looking at the item she made she was able to decide what it was going to be used for. She decided to make it a salve used with toxic venom. That made sense right? Then she could use it to help make her damage go up when she needed it to. She hoped that it would help with upcoming boss monsters and she could use them to help not die. In this laboratory of sorts, there was still much to do after making the item. The lady in charge brought her to a crafting bench and showed her how to put the things she had made together. It was actually fairly straightforward and didn’t leave much room for questioning or messing up. She combined the items she found, desperate to make all of this time not go to waste. She was making a salve type thing she guessed. Only at the end of the day could she go home…
