[E3|F10-SP] Wonder Why

Recommended Posts

Embarrassing. Soooo embarrassing. Was DAY going to let her live it down? No, probably not, NIGHT figured.

When they'd closed the space between them, the player was still set face-down, a black unspeakable puddle on the floor. It was hot. Incredibly warm from where the woman was collapsed at, and no doubt it was due to of all her exasperation, spilled over and out of her tiny, frail self. Terrifying, she'd thought. My duple's a monster, but for many reasons other than their power...

... This is stupid. Sooo stupid... Dungeon ground, please swallow me up whole.

"Oh, ma chérie~!"

Cardinal, help me. They're even making jokes about it now...

A muffled, wavering, tearful, "What do you want?" came from the bottomed darkness.

"Would you believe me now, that this face was a gift from the heavens?"

NIGHT pushed herself off the marble, starting to get up on her own two feet. She turned around, resolute, but her face betrayed her determination, cheeks definitely still flushed rosy and red.

"Absolutely not--!!!"

She took off running after that. Whatever. DAY could probably find her way out of there, anyway.

Truth be told, NIGHT had one more task filed under her agenda for today. It was one probably best done alone, even though she craved the company when doing so, and she would've (reluctantly) taken her other along with her for the ride, letting their bickering run its course. That would've been a fine series of events for her, most definitely an agreeable one to loneliness. Guaranteed.

But then of course she had to go and get herself locked into some situation she wouldn't escape easily from, and then be saved by her knight in shining armor. Stupid. Dumb. Cardinal be damned. To top it all off? They rubbed their salt in her wounds, they knew they did, and NIGHT was the one paying the price for... for all of this.

I hate it, she repeated to herself, running down the steps leading up to the prison fortress. I hate it, I hate it, I absolutely hate it.

Her first set of victims were idly shambling about the prison entrance. She'd taken care of them before on the way in, and they posed nary a problem for the two intrepid travelers. However, alone? And pressing for time to just get the dodge out of Tartarus?

The problem found itself to be just a tad bit more complex.

Two entities taking on four targets at once. Eight enemies total. But NIGHT was alone, now, the sole singularity come to fit a wrench in her own plans. And it was a sad truth she had to be willing to swallow, just to beat her own doppel from catching up to her.

Better start from somewhere then. Unleashing a swift set of strikes upon her foes nearby, she tore them asunder with an unusual amount of strength -- perhaps Cardinal was listening, lending the sorry player a hand, as their fury and misfortune channeled through their heavy, disastrous blow.

The next set of foes were trickier; more alert. Now that the jig was up about an outsider in their midst, they charged forth, diving at the escaping prisoner. And NIGHT was fast, sure, but even her speed could be matched by her enemies sometimes. Also, the lucky placements of her opponents' positions when she'd left the stronghold?

NIGHT wanted to spit on that.

One of the closer tormented souls swung at her armor, freezing in place as her armor's venom began to work its magic. Brilliant, NIGHT thought, as the surprise caught her movements off guard. Her angled sword art had been tilted askew, missing one of her targets in verity. Just damn great. Was this curse brought upon her by her settlement of choice or the system itself? Either way, not only did she have to chase after the whiffed later, she wasn't willing to spare the stunned straggler its life, either.

Well, the paralyzed wight would be there when she returned. As long as she kept moving, perhaps she'd pass DAY by, and then at least she wouldn't need to worry about their presence dawning upon her after seeing their golden locks in the subtle, cool light.

And they sure would be pretty to look at. No, sh-t, focus, goddammit--

This was exactly the kind of scenario she'd envisioned trying to rid herself of in the worst possible situation. And boy did it just happen. So of course, her fall out was going to be messy, messy, messy.

NIGHT slid over to the aggravated foe, sinking Dracbane into their side completely, the blade rumbling with joy. A delectable sacrifice, it'd figured, handing the player their rejuvenation spheres, before the latter took off again, trying to catch the other two shadows in a line up. When they'd fallen into place, she cut them both with a single, continuous stroke, shattering them into pieces without mercy.

Back to the foe left recovering in the dust. As it spotted NIGHT once again and began its advance, the player stopped, timing her shift in posture carefully. Her focus was on the chasing apparition, and if she could pull this maneuver off --

-- Well. It sure would look cool, but more importantly she might be able to cut some corners in the fight before continuing her sprint elsewhere.

The enemy behind her got close, and that was when NIGHT whipped around, digging her sword into its skin. Then, continuing her turn on her heel, her next victim fell to her blade too, cut down in a flurry of scarlet and black. Dracbane was appeased, the cunning, cruel sword. And that was the player's signal to continue her escape.

So off she went, leaving the scatter of blue lights behind. Down the drawbridge (she'd paused for a moment before realizing it wouldn't break) towards the crossroads she went.

And when she reached the trees, she figured that perhaps that was enough distance put between them before her speed really mattered again.

NIGHT nearly collapsed upon the dirt floor, her chest burning and sore from the lengthy exertion and incredible panic the player had put herself in. She knew she would recover easily -- the system would ensure that -- but in her current state she found herself unable to budge, despite her desperate need to keep pushing on, going elsewhere, just anywhere else from here. A hacking cough, a dry swallow and deep panting breaths, the woman dragging herself along the road, gripping Dracbane's hilt in a loose, slow tug, before she crumpled to the floor again, giving into exhaustion if only for a beat.

Maybe it's better if I just don't move for a bit... Grrrhhh....

Clenched fists and gritted teeth. At least her vision was working. Right near where she was were a set of materials that had snuck itself into a corner of her environment.

So when she could move again, NIGHT clambered to her feet, trying to regain her breath. That was probably the most important part about her recovery process, she figured, as she stumbled around the area. First -- the retrieval of the material cache by the side of the road. And then...

"Mew!"

In the commotion, it was a miracle that Nyanko hadn't woken up sooner, the kitten popping its head out of her bag for a spell. And while NIGHT would be more than welcome for the sudden company of her familiar, this current predicament required some other finesse for a better play. One that didn't necessarily call for a cat in her presence.

But she'd still take him, anyway. Nyanko was baby, after all.

"Hey," she managed, tucking away her sword. "Sorry I woke you up, kitty."

"Mrrow!"

"I-- sorry." It's not like NIGHT could understand him, but she assumed he objected. Instead, at an innocent stare and a quick beckoning of his paw, she turned to look in his direction.

Another set of materials. Brilliant.

Already awake and down to business? Truly, her cat was after her own heart.

And so was something else. NIGHT hadn't forgotten -- but she was pressing to move on. The matter of avoiding DAY was urgent; she swore she could spot the familiar gold and white sauntering down the way she came from in the distance.

That's not good. And to think, the entity would probably ask why she did that in the first place. How would she find herself explaining human emotions to such a strange being?

Okay, no time to waste. Swipe the cache, and bounce out of there -- NIGHT tore her way down one of the paths by the crossroads, just any old path, and hoped that maybe her double wouldn't expect her to have picked it during their return. Or that they would go down another road instead. Or--

Or just ignore her, and go about their day, whatever that may consist of.

What-- what did it consist of?

Even though NIGHT would appreciate the time taken to muse upon her query, a. it wasn't a definitive brilliant idea for her current state of mind, right now, and b. the zombies up ahead were more than ready to help take her mind off of things.

Because they, too, were looking for a fight.

Oh great! So am I-- according to today's schedule, anyway. Look, can we check back in later?

No? Oh well. She did try to reason with them.

So much for storing Dracbane, the sword pulled out from its sheathe once again. NIGHT whispered an apology over to it, wondering if the blade was even the attentive type, or if she was going crazy from working her body this hard, and speaking to her sword was a side effect of her brain going haywire. Either way, the weapon spoke true, returning concern for the player as it shattered her opponents' forms swift and true, returning them to their sender as another wave of attendees began gunning for her instead.

In the chaos, there was always one enemy that refused to die. For the monsters, that would be NIGHT. It seemed reasonable why Cardinal would pair off a grating measure just to hinder her progress after some easy contemplation. Just to keep the player on her toes, and also to unsettle her nerves, so that the computer-controlled devils she faced constantly could even have a slither of a chance at winning their fight.

For NIGHT, in her eyes, it was always one lucky bastard that just moved the wrong way once. Once, and only once, and it was enough for her to be set off her groove.

Also, there would be more than one most of the time. She hoped that this time, it would be different (it wouldn't).

Calamity Disaster made quick work of chopping up the undeads' health bar, save the one that got away. She eyed the lone revenant, seething, before continuing her onslaught further.

Apparently, she must've given it some kind of invitation to strike her, an evil eyed curse of sorts, as when she whirled around to address the rest of the pack, NIGHT found herself stumbling forth, pushed off her mark once again.

She swore under her breath, before turning around to press Dracbane across its side. With the deviant properly punished for the moment, she returned to the squalor, and with two equally great strikes, tore apart two of the creatures, isolating one from the group.

... Oh, heavens; but I just asked for a situation otherwise...!

This was bad. Each moment she wasted on an enemy of non-importance stalled her trek further into the darkened floor, and subsequently made her this much closer to being caught? Followed? Found by her gleeful follower. And, maybe, it would have been fine some other day. I mean, it's not like DAY was hunting to kill her, or anything.

Just ruin her emotions for a beat.

No no no -- NIGHT shouldn't take her eyes off the goal for a second just to muse. Take the enemies down, run. Two easy steps, instructions she should be able to follow without fail.

Back to it, then. Aligning the foe she'd missed earlier to the one locked in place, it took her sword art a single, graceful line of attack to cull the apparitions hanging onto their dear lives. And when that was done, she glanced down the path she took to reach the mob pack.

DAY was inching ever closer. If it weren't them, and it was some player else, then at least the anxiety would keep her in good shape from escaping her goddamned curse. It was high time to move, then. NIGHT turned around and raced off again, further down the lane she took.

Which way did I go again? Back at the crossroads? ... Nevermind, it can't be too important, right?

After each sprint, NIGHT wondered if the momentary break offered to her was by a stroke of luck, or was calculated by her duple's efforts in catching up to her. Either way, the time lent to her was greatly appreciated, because not knowing which way she'd gone was setting her plans awry. Just a hair.

And by hair, NIGHT figured she meant a lot.

For starters -- there were way more trees than she'd expected, approaching fast on a rocky clearing. This wasn't the Stygian, she wondered, pausing her rushes in a slide with her arms outstretched, finding herself a little in shock. Maybe this was fine; at least DAY might think twice about where NIGHT had gone, and that would buy her plenty amounts of time to dish out her feelings on entities that barely deserved her anguish, sorrows and deep-seated fears.

But like, on the other hand. Where in hell was she, exactly?!

Gentle nudging and clattering from her waist bag. NIGHT looked down, giving her kitten her time of day for the moment. After all, she was already lost. Maybe her familiar might've picked up on something she hadn't noticed yet?

Ah, and Nyanko, ever observant, pointed her to some egg caches by the side. She tried to offer the cat a smile, but it came up... half-hearted, or at least muddied with uncertainty. Not that Nyanko's efforts weren't as appreciated, of course not. As she leaned down to grab the handful of items, she took her time to examine her surroundings. Tartarus, the river -- if she hadn't been to either of them, then the last item on that list would be...

... Oh. So there was nothing here, effectively. Well, it at least gave the player some amount of respite, hiding out in the middle of nowhere, the locale being a place where people wouldn't bat an eye at going to. That was good for her, right?

Well, mayhaps. If she wasn't also bothered by more undead creatures roaming about her vicinity.

Look, this was theoretically the underworld, or a similar equivalent to it thematically in the castle? The castle was obligated to its hordes of enemies; shambling undead or radiant insectoids, from here and there and of any creature, from anything and anywhere else in between those parameters. But did it have to clutter her sights today? And like, right now?

The bitter taste of regret lingered on her tongue, as well as a faint saltiness of sorrow at the side of her mouth. Well, it was penciled in on her task list after all. Might as well be somewhere secluded so she wouldn't be interrupted, right?

By the rocky clearing were where her enemies lingered, weary souls waiting to be put to rest. And NIGHT would oblige them, fishing Dracbane from her back once again. Neck cracking. Time to get to work.

The first wave was somehow always the easiest, she'd noticed, in her furious attempt in an escape from DAY. She'd chalked it up to some supernatural, poetic, dramatic mechanic the system had in place, where maybe her emotions would synchronize with Cardinal's mercy for a moment, ruled by some random number generator. Then, when the stars aligned just right, anyone, any player from all around the castle, might be able to pull off an impressive maneuver just as she did in the heat of the moment, tearing apart their prey fancifully and theatrically. Like an actor in a stage play, so to speak.

On the other hand, maybe it was all just numbers, after all. And NIGHT stood at the top of the food chain for the moment, from where she was currently standing. Floor 10 was just a Tier 1 site, after all. It should be little wonder to anyone that she was able to ease her opponents onto the chopping block here.

So why was it that the second block of enemies just... always made themselves trouble makers?

Y'know what? Maybe it was luck. Yeah, that's it. It was entirely up to luck, after all. Whether or not her sword art would land upon a wandering vagrant, or she would be pushed away from her target, or if Dracbane decided to fuel her movements or bleed an opponent out -- all of it was just time and numbers. And it was a fate she had no say over, merely playing out her role as the judicator, sending her foes onwards to death row.

How morbid. And surprisingly fitting. Yomi, hell; the underworld was such an interesting place for formalities and casualties to reside in.

NIGHT was snapped out of her thoughts with a backslap from one of the specters, the woman choking out a grunt and a growl. No, she wasn't planning on missing this time, she ruled. One quick slice, a punishment for her attacker, before she went back to the rabble.

She should've felt safe. NIGHT was working with some modicum of secrecy, taking out her anger and embarrassment out on some poor souls of the underground. And her opponents were nothing more than playthings, the difference between their strength and her own more striking than the mountain ranges out on Floor 1. (Were there any other mountain ranges out there? Well, she wasn't going to spend time in recall for that.) But still the woman found herself on edge, and it wasn't due to the sight of the grotesques in her midst getting cleaved and marked up in half.

Still, still her thoughts remained with DAY. What she should say, what they would ask, how their confrontation would play out. She had a home to return to, for Cardinal's sake, and she was hoping she'd be able to slip back into her room without so much as an eye contact passed between the two of them from today's activities.

But so much for that, if they ever brought it up. NIGHT hated that element of uncertainty, of raw fear of speaking to someone you didn't know or you hated. Or maybe, it wasn't that specifically. After all, they'd managed to hold a conversation just fine, back when the player had finished meditating and recovering from her mental trial some time before, right?

And even before that, the Gemini had approached her in her own workshop. Approached? No-- barged in or intruded, even breaking in was the right word. They'd tried to kill her, yes, and still NIGHT offered them her time and her voice. It might've been strange, sure. But it didn't set off her warning bells with an intensity to match her fears today.

It's got to be something else. NIGHT knew the answer. She was a smart cookie. But its admission... was something she didn't want to go through with. To entertain the thought, or even have it linger in her mind... She'd prefer none of it, to continue living in ignorant bliss.
