[F08][SP] Training Your Familiar

Recommended Posts

Taining a familiar wasn’t as eash as it sounded. It required a lot of rng. The hardest part was finding people who had moved or given her some fake advice. They thought that they were safe from her questions? They were sorely mistaken. She was not that stupid. She knew she was being given the ring around, it was only logic. She tried to get her familiar to take some damage from her but it was clear that the bird was going to take some more time to train than she thought. She had thusfar taken a lot of eagle training books so she brought those back to the library and she went back out to find some more. These hidden book hoarders, waited for her to show up. One of them looked out their window with curiosity, having heard that someone was going around to collect books guides for training famliaries.

So she kept looking for a book on how to train her familiar. The complaints stopped. The man in charge of handling the books was none other than one of the library NPCs himself. There would be no need to be alarmed today, not tonight. Silence quickly returned. A few hoots of owls were heard again.. In this part of the town, all seemed to know what she was after. Thankfully she had been able to get the book from the hoarder, saying that he just had to return the book and he could check it out again later. It was as simple as that. The employee apologized for being such an obsessive hoarder and gave the book back without any drama. She used the book to look at whether or not she could use it to help with her eagle training. It didn’t look hopeful. It said to try hitting it and seeing if it could take it.

One person with a familiar training book that might have helped her decided to get confrontational. The NPC started running at high speed. Arms floating behind him, he jumped around and tried to escape. Sweat began to cover his body as his speed increased more and more. The air whistled in his ears. Somehow she was able to tail him. Because he was kind of overweight and couldn’t be bothered to exersize because all he did was sit around and read all day. So even she could catch up to him. He stopped dry. Bbreathless, shocked he looked at the one who stood before him. So it was this SAO player that had spun her boots on him? The poor man, defenders of a dogma that he could not even explain, was very pale and out of breath. “I don't know what you are doing mr NPC, but you need to give that book to me,” she told him while pointing at a book in his hands. He threw the book at her and the familiar blocked it with its body. Progress!

She took the book off the ground and read it. This was the strangest form of training she was aware of but she soldiered on. She read that she should sit with her bird on a wall. “Sit on the wall? Like… on top of it? Or are you sitting on the surface of the wall facing the sky?” she was quite perplexed by the book’s reccomended thing to do. She had a thousand other things she’d like to do before she got so bored she would go sit around. “aww, it can’t be that hard can it? Just do enough training to prove yourself and then… voila!” that was the route she was taking anyway. She didn’t have it in her to go through a complex series of training steps with an imaginary bird.

er voice trailed off as she heard trouble in the distance. She ran around the corner and saw a couple boys ganging up a younger kid, maybe around twelve years old.

She looked at the bullied kid and then took a look around as well after the bullies made their exit. This was feeling more and more like a bad idea but she couldn’t stem the excitement she had felt earlier. She put a hand to her cheek and rubbed her smooth skin in a circular motion. Some more doubts were sprouting in her mind, but they were nothing that couldn’t be resolved. She wouldn’t have even come here if she wasn’t willing to risk her eyes at least. But if they were going to take some more time to think on this then she needed some way to know that this method of blocking with her familiar was trustworthy. She had never heard of this being done before but she threw the book at her familiar and it blocked it again with a wing. It was pretty simple after all.

“How about this,” she offered to the eagle, “I take it since you know about this blocking business, I also take it that you are experienced in scratching people’s eyes out. I know the book said something about having had some synergy in battle but why can’t you do both? If you can do this service for me and prove that it works then I will have no reason to distrust you or doubt your ability to help protect me if things go well then you may find a lot more trust.” She couldn’t believe she was talking to an imaginary bird but here she was, doing it like it was nothing. She threw the book at it and it blocked it again. They were making some progress after all. For the time being, she needed to do some read about which other skills she might want to pursue next.

She recognized that she didn’t give the bird much of a choice in the conversation to say no, but if he did happen to say no then none of this really mattered anyway. She was hooked on the idea and if he wouldn’t treat her then she would find a familiar that would… She kept walking along and reading when she saw some bullies ganging up on a kid. She then saw an older guy come and school them on proper eteiquette and not to do things like that. Wow, the boy’s mere presence was enough to scare them off. She worried just a little about whether or not she would ever have a commanding presence and reputation. She usually tried to be at least a little discreet and out of the way. It wasn’t like people hated her for all she knew, but she liked to avoid confrontation and such if she could help it.

The comment of being not so good with comforting others made Hinatao raise an eyebrow. She wasn’t going to question it. She walked over to the crying kid and patted his head lovingly, like a mother might. She had half a mind to yell at him and tell him to stick up for himself but she knew that introverts didn’t like to do that kind of stuff. “Do you have something to say to him?” she asked the crying kid, pointing to the one who broke it all up to begin with.

“Thank you mister,” he said to the man and then Hinata shooed him off. She seemed to have her mind on tracking those bullies down to give them a piece of her mind but she didn’t know them. It was a disadvantage of being this old and being out of touch with the youths.

“Nice job,” she congratulated as she continued reading about familiar training…

She kept reading about familiar training as she walked around with her eagle. Every once in a while she threw something at it to see if it was still learning its purpose. It seemed to be getting the hang of it. She could tell that it was going to get boring though. So she decided to do something else on the side. She was going out to gather which was a pretty common thing for her. She spent a lot of time doing odd things like this to pass the time and usually make a little bit of money on the side. She sighed though, because having to do this was just another way to waste a day. But whatever, she couldn’t be bothered to mope around about the state of things or how broke she felt. She just needed to buck up and get it over with. With any luck she would meet an interesting person or two along the way.

She found herself on the edge of a beach looking around to see if there was anything worth gathering in the area. She knew that there were some shells around here that were worth some money so she focused on those. She didn’t know anything about the creatures that defended said shells though and whether or not she would have to fight at all was currently up in the air. She grabbed her elbows with her opposite hands and took a stroll down the edge of the waters and looked around. Wasn’t someone else supposed to be around here to help her out? She didn’t want to have any horrible surprises. Well maybe it was just wishful thinking. She couldn’t distract herself from doing what she really needed to and that was throwing rocks at the familiar. In real life this would have been abuse, but here it was just training.

Hinata couldn’t help but notice that the bird seemed kind of reserved. Much like herself, but to an extreme. Maybe he wasn’t sure of himself? He might have been ready for greatness but not mentally or emotionally prepared for it? She couldn’t put her finger on it and she didn’t want to pry. Maybe one of these days he would open up to her about what was troubling him. For now, it wasn’t her problem to solve. She smiled at him when he returned from getting pelted by rocks. She kept throwing them though because the bird wasn’t bout to ditch her for nor eason. She had to keep trying if she was going to level up its training bar or whatever it was measured by. Its counterpart stepped aside, letting out a cry of fear that started without ending. The second man appeared and quickly cracked his neck down the beach.

More rock throwing at her bird that wouldn’t talk back to her. It iddn’t stop her from talking to it every so often. “So uh, what’s your favorite food? And the coolest thing that you can do?” She knew that they were coming up to some fast food spots now that they were now entering a part of town that she knew about. She wanted to get him something, if he’d let her. If not they were going to have to burn another half hour or so some other way. He had to like something that wasn’t tanking attacks or something like that. She kicked a pebble down the street as she walked, taking care to keep an eye out for anything wrong but for the life of her she couldn’t see anything out of place. She wondered how much longer training this blasted bird could possibly take. As if getting it to begin with wasn’t toxic enough.

She looked at the bird and saw it look at a food vendor. “You want a maki roll huh,” she said, seeing one coming up. She jogged up, got a couple and then went back to the bird, handing him one so that he could enjoy it. She had no reservations about scarfing her own down in under a minute. “Oh and do you think you can help me travel too? That would be cool… I’m not familiar with stuff that does that. And don’t sweat it. You’ll grow out of being quiet. My trick is not caring what other people think about me. Well, most people.” She grinned and thought about the only times she was super serious. Probably when her boss was around and when her parents were keeping an eye on her. Otherwise she usually just acted how she wanted. She hoped this was building a bond between them that she could exploit.

Soon they came up to the end of the road which was pretty much where they had started. “I’ll be going then,” she said testing if the familiar would follow her into danger, “It’ll be dangerous with a bunch of fighting. I’m doing a bunch of quests and working towards a tier promotion, so if you are interested let’s team up again some time! We can do something a little more exciting and see those defensive moves you can do.” She gave him a way and walked off, eager to get something a little more tasty than a roll in her stomach. And the bird came with her. It wasn’t scared of combat but apparently she couldn’t use it yet. She was off on another stroll anyways. Except this one didn’t have real combat in it for once. She didn’t know how she felt about fighting someone but when she read that she was almost done with training she smiled.

More pointless meandering down the shore just wondering when she would be all ready to go home with a fully trained combat familiar. She rad that she needed to use SP to even use their abilities so that was already a big turn off. She had some saved up but she had wanted to use those for vanish, not for a familiar skill. Maybe she would get to see some of those sweet explosions next time she was in combat. She arrived at the water and saw her bird flying around pretty easily. She was dressed in sweatpants and a tshirt because why not. She didn’t have any thoughts at her disposal or any significant plans for how to spend the rest of her day so this match was already decided. She was of course going to try hitting her eagle with her fists, but she didn’t think that would do much at all.

There would have been no need for Hinatao to answer. Questions were meant to get her mind to focus on the subject of the question, which then could be read. An unfocused mind was impossible to collect the right information from, she imagined. This might pose a problem. Thinking was not something she could control. Then again, the eagle already knew all about Hinatao. There would be no benefit for the girl to tell it anything else. They were already bound... And, if the she played her cards right, she might be able to find out more about the creature. She threw some more rocks at the eagle and then they decided to take a break in a room that was nice and warm, a pleasant departure of spring temperatures. She was not made for such extreme cold, but with some warm clothing, she could cope if it meant mastering her familiar.

Even in the room she threw stuff at the familiar. It blocked with increasing accuracy and ddint’ look like it was getting hurt at all. Just as she had predicted, the bird had been easily persuaded by the girl, not asking too many questions, let alone ones that were too difficult to answer. They’d been able to move on fairly quickly. Maybe it had helped that the familiar had been a nice bird, and that Hinatao, looking like an idiot talking to her bird had been accompanying it. All in all, things had gone rather smoothly. The girl had swiftly taken the food out of her inventory, having placed them on a small table. There were six apples. She knew what the apple did to her but not to the eagle, but had placed them next to the other items just in case they had some other features she did not know about.

“Do you eat?” she asked as the eagle looked at the apples. “So, what do you think?” she asked the animal, her eagerness only subtly affecting her voice. She was so close. How long had it been since she’d come in the possession of these items? How many people had she approached with hopes of unraveling their mystery? The end of her quest of appraisal was in sight, and her asterism pulsed rapidly. “Do you know what these are?” The eagle eyed the objects rather blandly. After the initial shock of seeing the apples, the woman's own words painted the same picture that the girl was already seeing on her own. This was no great champion of some battle story; just a mercenary, more like, in the right place at the right time to loot an elite soldier of her hard-earned trinkets. That was neither here nor there though. It was clear that the eagle didn’t benefit from apples.

In another time, and another place, she might have been contemptuous of such self-serving lack of devotion, and refused to extend any aid whatsoever, regardless of the implied life-debt. But too many people believed that compassion went hand-in-hand with a lack of honor. And not only did honor demand a compensation for having had her life saved, she was not, in truth, feeling her usual measure of reverence for any of the NPC animals right now herself. She sighed, not knowing how much longer this would take. Hopefully not much longer because it showed that her status for training the fmailar was at “2/3” which just told her to keep doing what she was doing. She threw an apple at the bird and it caught it in its beak. Cool! It brought an ironic glint to her eye. It all added up so splendidly. She realized that the programming this bird must have been subjected to.

She started to laugh, and not entirely in bitterness either; there was genuine mirth within. her gaze turned to the ceiling, and some unseen target, "Oh, you are loving this aren't you." she chuckled to the eagle. Her gaze lowered to find the bird still awaiting some response. "I'm sorry, there is so much history to all this. But I can tell you some other time. Right now, you should know that we are almost done so if that is a problem for you, we should perhaps discontinue this exchange. I myself have nothing to lose. It is up to you." She gave the bird a cold look and then threw the apples at it one by one. It blocked each and every time. Then she punched it, only for her fist to get blocked. “Looks like you’re trained well enough. Let’s have fun in battle together.” She may have seemed like a bipolar but she needed to test if it would block when threatened. Well, that was that. Quest complete!
