"Why are there so many fish mobs in Aincrad?" Bahr muttered as he meandered through the brush of the island's core. The Scents of the Wild quest line had taken him to Floor Sixteen, which was more or less virtual Hawaii, in an attempt to wrangle yet another goddamn fish. There were fish men in events, fish men in non-events, fish men just because fish men, fish floor bosses, fish field bosses, and now? Yet another fish. Something fishy was going on here.

But that wasn't about to dissuade Bahr from hopping on that and tearing it a new one. If he'd read the stats that the info broker gave him correctly, and assuming the information was accurate, there was no reason to assume it would give him any trouble. It was basically free experience. Though, he intended to be cautious, as this vanity had led him astray before.

Supposedly, all he had to do was approach the water's edge, cast out a fishing line, and hope he caught it. He hadn't gotten any firm physical descriptions of the animal, but he'd heard that he would know it when he saw it. Also, the fact that every mob in Aincrad had health bars floating around its head with a name attached helped. That was, uh, a huge perk, actually.

Luckily, Bahr had been wasting an enormous quantity of time in recent memory fishing like a madman. Well, not really like a madman. If he were too excited when doing it, he wouldn't be able to catch any fish at all. But, he was fishing all the time. On every floor. Where before he would hop out of bed and go slay mobs for sixteen hours straight, now he found solace in the stillness of the water and the fish that were stupid enough to take his bait time and time again.

Oh shoot, he'd gotten a bite without even realizing it during his internal monologue.

Bahr was so distracted, in fact, that he didn't even have his weapon at the ready by the time the creature surfaced. He fumbled for it, missing the hilt twice before finally managing to secure the loosest grasp on it. He swung, missed, and the fish got a hold on his leg.

Now the thing that you should understand about Bahr is that he is by no means a weak man. He worked out, grinding against mobs constantly, sought the best gear he could find, calculated the builds, got the best skills, and all of that other nonsense that creates the min/max player that people either hate or love. He was strong, and capable, and by no means a wimp.

But this fish? Yeah, this fish was stronger than him. By a mile.

It began slowly dragging him out into the ocean as he fumbled at the sand in a vain attempt to keep himself out of its territory. He only had a few seconds to act until he was fully submerged. His only hope was to try attacking the fish again and hope for the best.

Bahr swung Blinkstrike at the fish yet again. But in his panicked frenzy, he managed to miss for a second time, and had now been pulled fully into the water. Without the friction of land fighting back against the fish, it was capable of moving much quicker and deeper than before, pulling Bahr so far down into the depths that it had started to become dark. He could still see the faintest outlines of the objects and mobs that surrounded him, but not with any clarity.

A fight underwater, was it? Bahr assumed that he could swim back to shore if need be, but what was stopping the creature from simply snatching him a second time and bringing him back down to the depths once more? Were that to occur, he would have simply been wasting his time trying to escape to land. He knew full well that he was in the enemy's environment, but perhaps there was a way to use the mob's comfortability to his advantage.

Or, you know, he might just die.

Still, he had to give it a shot. And in accordance with this, he used a similar technique as the one he had used against the Lurker. In deep water, with light obscured, one could charge up their blade with a Sword Art to produce a glow and increase visibility, however scarcely. So he charged up yet another Galaxy Destroyer, and it provided him with just enough visibility to see Moretsuna approaching from his flank.

He turned as best he could in the water and clocked it with a single, mighty blow, sending it hurtling back into the darkness. He couldn't tell from where he was floating, but it appeared as though the strike had had a massive impact on the creature's health. One more good hit like that, and Bahr would be rid of the creature once and for all. Which was only slightly disappointing. Two hits? What a wimp.

In accordance with his technique, Bahr charged up another Galaxy Destroyer to see if would shed any light (pun intended) on the true reality of his situation. Underneath him, he saw a glimmer of some sort sort. As he looked down, he recognized that it was the scales of Moretsuna catching the glow of his blade. With one single, mighty swing downward, the beast was caught by the sword and cast into two pieces of relatively equal size. After a moment, they both combusted into puffs of blue polygonal fractals that slowly dissipated into the darkness of the sea.

Well, that was disappointing. Even in the water, the thing didn't stand a chance. Though, Bahr wasn't too surprised. After all, this quest was meant for level thirty-somethings, right? Even if he'd come less prepped than usual, it was still no surprise that he was able to slay the beast easily.

But there was one issue that still needed attending. Though Bahr's natural recovery was enough to stave off the drowning damage (Which is weird, right? Like, that basically means he can never drown. That's freakin' crazy, man. I wonder if higher floors will have more damaging drowning properties? We'll have to wait and see.), he was still without oxygen, and everything was beginning to get a little dimmer. (See what I did there? That's how you characterize stuff like this even if your character's actual HP is doing just fine. Because, uh, it kinda doesn't makes sense that Bahr could just float underwater on this floor indefinitely. That would just be silly.)

As such, he started to make his way back to shore as quickly as he could - whichever way shore was. Come to think of it, it would probably just make more sense to swim toward the light and hope for the best. Once he'd broked through the surface, he would look for land then.

Finally - air. He sucked it in with all the ferocity his lungs could muster, then let it billow out harshly, before gulping in another full lungset of air. The little black dots that were the telltale sign of oxygen deprivation slowly faded from his sight, revealing the island a cool mile away. Well, maybe that was an exaggeration. But it sure looked like a mile at first glance. Whether it was the fish or the current that had pulled him out this far wasn't clear, but one thing was certain; Bahr was going to need to work to get back to shore.

So there was no use procrastinating about it. He began swimming, fiercely at first, but gradually weakening in force over time as his energy waned. He'd gotten closer to the shore now, but it felt as thought he'd hit an invisible wall. He hadn't gotten any closer for several minutes. What was actually happening here? Did the game have a set limit to how far a player could go out, and the fish had inadvertently brought him past that? If that were the case, did that mean that Bahr was doomed to die out here? Cursed by a fish he'd defeated in two blows?

Link to post

Wait, no. This was almost certainly rip tides. He'd heard about this. Usually, at a certain distance from the shore, it became quite a bit more difficult to swim back to it on account of the currents. If he remembered correctly, swimming parallel to the shore until he found a pocket in the currents that allowed safe passage back to shore. Even though Bahr remembered this snippet of trivia, he wasn't all too confident that it would work out. Especially considering this was a simulated ocean as opposed to a real one. How accurate could Kayaba have possible gotten?

Fairly accurate, as it turned out. As Bahr swam parallel to the shore for a few minutes, he could feel the pull on his body out into the ocean gradually weakening. Eventually, he didn't feel it at all, which he took as his cue to continue inward. He changed his trajectory directly toward shore and swam with all his might. He got closer, then closer still, until he had finally arrived.

Land. Sweet, merciful land.

He’d have kissed the sand, if not for the putrid taste it would have left in his mouth and the uncomfortable sensation between his teeth. Instead, he would merely lay there, face down, allowing the gradually rising tide to lap at his ankles. Every inch of his body felt dehydrated and gross, as though tumbled through a rotating orb filled with salt. It had rubbed him raw and sucked the water from his flesh. The irony that he was soaked wasn’t lost on him.

Eventually, be managed to hoist himself into a sitting position and look out over the waves, taking in the sight for what it truly was. Here was an island paradise that he had been ignoring this whole time. How had he been so foolish as to let something like this evade his interest? All of those days when he wished he could just get away, this had always been an option.

As he allowed the warmth of the sun to wash over him and gradually sap the moisture away from his clothing and skin, he found himself wondering if she should move to a place like this. Get away from the dank dark of the tenth floor and try out something more sunny and comfortable. But, then, if he did that, would the novelty wear off? Would island living lose its zeal if it became his reality every single day?

Part of him said, “No way, man. It would always be cool.” And another piece of him countered, “You say that, but you liked the appeal of the tenth floor before you moved there. Now you hate it.” But therein lied the answer to his quandary, didn’t it? Bahr hated where he lived. So why stay there?

Even with that being true, h was hesitant. The cost associated with moving would be of huge detriment to his savings. And was this place even really right for him?

He wanted to believe that there was no right or wrong answer to this dilemma, but truth be told, there was. He had made the wrong decision when he chose to live on the tenth floor. The property itself was gorgeous, but the locale was horrible. Here, the locale was beautiful and inviting, but would the properties be worthwhile? He surmised there was only one way to know for sure.

But first, he had to dress the part.

He summoned his equipment panel and unequipped everything, leaving only a pair of boxer shorts on (which he immediately covered with swimming trunks, pervert). Shed of his heavy, wet armor, he felt t he sixteenth floor in true perspective for the first time. That’s when he knew - this place was a wonderland. He’d been missing out.

If he checked out the existing properties and found them amenable, he saw no reason not to move. After doing some research on the island, of course.

After a few hours of shambling around, Bahr could confidently say that the houses here sucked. Like, a lot. As cool as the island was, there was no way that these little huts and shacks would actually be comfortable than his current home. He had also heard that sometimes shrieks could be heard coming from the forest at night. Given his chagrin with the banshee on floor ten, that wasn’t a good omen. He’d ignored the warnings before, and he wouldn’t make the same mistake again.

This was all very disappointing news for Bahr, as he’d fallen in love with the island the longer he hung around. The locals in the settlements were friendly, and all seemed like a close-knit group considering the low population. But even if he had decided that living here was off the table, there was no reason to leave right away. He could stay. Relax awhile. Take a tour.

Tours? Actual tours? Had he read that right? Considering the language the natives spoke (that the language filter was luckily able to translate) and how they generally kept to themselves, Bahr hadn’t exactly imagined there to be a bustling tourist industry. But there it was. 500 col for a tour of the entire floor. Bahr had nothing but time, and the price was too good to pass up, so he paid the eager tour guide and before he knew it, they were off.

Bahr was taken on a wondrous tour through the main settlement (which was really difficult to pronounce), around the base of the volcano, through the (safer) parts of the Forest of Haunting Echoes, before he knew it they were right back where they had started. Bahr, who assumed they had reached the end of the tour, thanked his tour guide and went on his merry way.

“Where are you going?” the tour guide inquired in his native tongue. “We haven’t even gotten on the boat yet.”

Boat? Now that Bahr hadn’t expected.

He hurried back to the tour guide, who then led him to a small, rickety boat that barely seemed seaworthy. Despite its rustic and delapidated condition, Bahr wasn’t worried. Worst case scenario, they sank, and Bahr would have to swim to shore again. He’d already done it once today - would another time really be so bad? At least he was in his trunks now.

The tour guide untied the boat from the dock it was secured to, and they were off. The bow of the boat carved through the turquoise water like a hot knife through butter, the ocean breeze catching the sail and propelling them along the coast with surprising agility. As Bahr felt the spray of the sea against his face, the wind through his hair, the rock of the boat, and the heat of the sun against his bare back, he knew. There was something special about this place, and he was connected to it.

The boat brought them around the mainland, and then splintered off to explore the peripheral islands. They were all much smaller than their larger cousin, but were plentiful. Bahr marveled at the variety of them. Some of them seemed like a thorn of stone sticking straight up out of the water. Others elevated rapidly, but leveled off very suddenly. Some barely classified as islands, more like afterthoughts than anything. Others were of a more standard variety, with modest slant shores leading into dense forests.

On one such island, Bahr spotted what looked to be a sign. He asked his tour guide if they could get a closer look and, after some convincing and a 500 col tip, the main sailed them inward. As they neared, Bahr came to recognize the sign as a property listing. He’d seen a similar such sign when he purchased his current home. But there wasn’t a house on the island, so what gives?

Link to post

He stepped off of the boat and onto the pearly white sand of the shore, the grainy material clinging to the moisture on his feet as he made his way to the sign. As he inspected its details, he came to discover that the entire island was for sale. The purchaser would be provided with some tools, and tasked with clearing out the trees and flora there. From those materials, and some other materials for sale around Aincrad, he would then need to build his own house to have a permanent residence on the island.

Players were warned in the notice that, despite the game engine making it easier than it would be in real life to collect and assemble the materials, this would still be a major undertaking, and would take a lot of time, effort, and dedication to finish. It was no fool’s errand, and only people who were serious about the prospect of putting in back breaking work should consider purchasing the property.

Bahr mulled over his options for awhile, much to the chagrin of his tour guide (who was still waiting back at the boat). On the one hand, this property was perfect in many ways. It offered him an opportunity to build a house of his design on what had essentially become his dream floor. He wouldn’t be relegated to the huts and shacks that were currently available - he had a chance to make something really nice for himself. It was also far enough away from the mainland that the night time wails of the Forest of Haunting Echoes, mitigating that drawback to the floor as well.

On the other hand, this was no small undertaking. It could be weeks or months before he had the place built, and that was hard work and dedication every single day. Likely some sleepless nights as well. Though, it wasn’t like his nights weren’t already sleepless, as it was.

In the end, the property was cheaper than most others, and there was nothing saying he had to give up his other house while he built this one. He could pick up this property and chip away at the project in his downtime. Even if it took a long time, he would still have somewhere to lay his head, and the payoff would be huge. When he was ready, he would make a pretty penny off of his house on the tenth floor and convert over everything inside.

Well, it seemed as though he had made up his mind.

Before he started having second thoughts, he tapped accept on the panel, and it was done. Bahr now owned an island, and had a project to work on in his downtime. For better or worse, Bahr had given into his impulses. And he had a feeling that very soon he would know if it were a mistake or not.

As Bahr made his way back to the boat, the tour guide regarded him with an upward nod. “So. Did you do it,” he asked. Bahr nodded in the affirmative as a response. The tour guide shook his head. “Good luck, my friend. You’re going to need it.”

Perhaps the man was right, and Bahr had made a huge mistake. But even if that were the case, he had a horse or awesome friends that would probably be willing to help him on it. Hopefully. There was no way he couldn’t do it if he had a little bit of help. And even if he didn’t, it wasn’t like he didn’t have three quarters of Aincrad left to figure it out.

So a little bit of col may have been lost. So what? It was an infinite resource. He could make more, and forget about the island, if need be. But if things worked out, he could be living in paradise.
