Another day, another quest. This one Bahr hoped he could get done in a timely manner - it was something he'd been meaning to get to for days, but had not yet had the opportunity. Now, with only a couple of hours at his disposal, if he couldn't get it done quickly he would need to leave and attempt it again at a later date. But given the information he'd been provided by a broker on the mobs involved in the quest, he was expecting too much trouble. Looked like the monkeys and the witch were absolute pushovers.

He slowly made his way through the woods, listening out for the telltale signs of a gaggle of monkeys up ahead. So far, he hadn't heard anything - but that wasn't going to discourage him. There was a tower he could see hovering over the treeline up ahead, and he suspected that that was where the potion he sought was housed.

Before long, he'd found it. The entrance to the miniature castle, or tower, or whatever thing. Guarding its entrance were four suspiciously quiet monkeys. No screeching, no "ooga booga," no flinging of fecal matter. All things considered, they were actually all quite tame and well behaved. It was almost a shame that Bahr would need to cut them all down where they stood. Quickly. Before they even knew what was happening.

He emerged from the brush with a blade bathed in gold, tearing it through all of them before they even knew what hit them. True to his goal, Bahr managed to shuffled them all loose from the mortal coil in a single, swift motion. One by one, they all burst into their base polygonal forms, slowly drifting into oblivion before Bahr's eyes. He couldn't recall if he'd even gotten a Fallen proc with that one - something told me they were all just really wimpy.

Then, from beyond the threshold, a slightly larger monkey emerged. Bahr cocked his head to the side and eyed the beast precariously as it pounded its chest with closed fists, a symbol of its undying devotion to protecting its queen. It would have been almost a little cute, if Bahr didn't find it so sad. It, like its brethren, was about to be eviscerated before it truly understood what was happening, all in the name of a witch that was using it as cannon fodder. It wouldn't protect her, and she knew that. It would only slow Bahr down.

That didn't mean he was going to hold back, though.

So he lurched forward, brought Dawn's Demise across its throat, and watched its health plummet. It, too, burst into a small cloud of azure dust, which slowly dissipated into nothingness. Now there was nothing standing between Bahr and the wretched witch.

As he ascended the spiral staircase that led to the witch's lab, he found himself wondering what kind of fight he was in for. He was going to be on her turf, and she did make potions for a living. It would stand to reason that she could probably do anything a player Alchemist could do - and then some. She probably had nasty poisons, paralytic concoctions, and possibly even explosives. When it really came down to it, did Bahr have any reason to believe that she wouldn't simply blow them both up? She was a mob, and could return. Dispatching Bahr would be permanent.

But once he saw her, he knew that she wasn't anything special. Simple lab, one health bar. It would be over quickly as long as Bahr could keep up the pressure and deal consistent damage. Even if she lasted longer than her minions, she didn't stand a chance of taking him down.

So when she noticed him and reached for a potion laying on the desk next to her, he slammed his sword down against her wrist and severed her hand from the rest of her.

She screamed, and the decibel level of her shriek was quite possible the most painful thing that Bahr had experienced all day. Obviously, nobody liked losing a hand, but to be so dramatic about it? It was grinding Bahr's gears. He'd lost limbs in Aincrad before, but they always grew back, and he didn't feel any pain aside from a dull numbness. Was there some sort of pain parameter that mobs experienced that he was unaware of? Or was it simply that they were programmed to react in such a way?

Regardless, the screaming didn't stop. In his best effort to mitigate it, Bahr fed Dawn's Demise more scarlet energy and released it into her, a crackle of bright energy creeping from the hilt of the weapon and jumping into her body. A fantastic score, with a whole heap of damage. She wasn't quite in the red yet, but Bahr guessed she was probably only a point or two out of it.

It was then that she did something a bit unexpected. As Bahr charged up another Galaxy Destroyer, she reached across her desk for a small vial with her only remaining hand. She managed to grasp it, then threw it on the floor without so much as a second thought. From the vial erupted a completely unrealistic quantity of billowing smoke, which filled the entire chamber. By the time Bahr realized what was happening, he heard her footsteps clambering past him, then down the stairs.

"Damn it," Bahr seethed as he heard her making her escape. He had no doubts that he would be able to catch up - his speed parameters were all but maxed out at this point. It was the principle of the thing. A mob running away? He had heard of it before, but had yet for it to happen to him in such a coordinated manner. She was clever, he'd give her that, but it didn't mean that he would give up the chase. Or let her get away, for that matter.

It was halfway down the stairs that he actually caught up to her, feeding Dawn's Demise more of the energy that it hungered for as he sized up yet another Galaxy Destroyer. The Witch, sensing her fate, threw herself over the railing of the spiral staircase in an attempt to reach the ground level more quickly. Surely she knew that she would suffer fall damage as a result, but anything was better than a scary red dude beating you up - right?

Well, Bahr didn't let her get that far. His blade swiped at her over the railing before she began her descent, barely clipping her left shoulder before she went tumbling down. As Bahr looked over the railing, he saw her lifeless body resting at the bottom. No sooner had he seen it than it was gone - replaced by azure pixels that filled the chamber at the bottom of the tower before slowly dissipating into nothingness.

Well. That had been a quick quest. As the rewards panel populated in front of Bahr, he dismissed it immediately without even looking at what he'd earned. It was a low level quest, so whatever he got couldn't have been that good. The only thing that he actually wanted was a special potion that he'd heard sat in the laboratory at the top of the tower - something akin to an Easter Egg in older games. Countless people had completed the quest without thinking to peruse the potions that lay in the witch's chamber and, admittedly, Bahr probably would have ignored them as well, had he not heard about this specific potion from an info broker.

So he began to climb the stairs again, not in any particular rush, knowing that he now owned this little spit of land. Even if he lingered around long enough for the monkeys to respawn, he'd be capable of dispatching them again with much the same utility he had the first time. There was no need to go fast.

Within a vial filled to the top with an amber liquid, he found it. A potion that boosted efficacy during crafting attempts or identifications. Bahr doubted he would use it much for himself, but when there came a time for him to get some equipment identified, he could give it to whoever was doing the identifications. If he was lucky, he might walk away with a new Unique Enhancement or two. Not that his current set wasn't already ideal, of course.

Was it even worth farming for equipment anymore? The more that Bahr thought about it, the more he was beginning to come to terms with the idea that he was fast approaching the end of the road. He'd acquired an ideal kit, unlocked most any skill he could possibly need. The only thing left was to continue ascending the level ladder, even if that didn't particularly do anything grand for him either. A larger health pool, more energy, and bragging rights. That was about all it afforded him.

At this point, a part of Bahr felt as though he was simply shuffling from one level to the next in some sort of vain completionist effort. There was no real reason to continue grinding out quests. He did it because he could, and because a bigger level number sometimes equated to more respect in this bizarro world they had all become trapped in. Here, it was less about what assets you possessed, how much col you had, or who you knew. Power was the main currency.

Even then, Bahr didn't particularly seek power. The kind of person that you were still mattered, at least to the people who mattered to him. So, that being said, why did he continue to strive for higher and higher levels? Was it boredom? Obligation? Or was there truly a part of him that yearned to be respected simply due to the volume of experience he had acquired?

A large part of his reason for reaching for the Frontlines, and fighting alongside its patrons, had eroded entirely. He was no longer looking for her, because he'd moved on and accepted her fate. So what did that leave? Fighting for himself and Lessa, obviously, but there was an element missing. He wasn't searching for her - he'd found her. Or, rather, they'd found each other. And accepted one another with open arms. It was a far cry from looking for someone whose status was unknown to you. Right now, if Bahr so desired (as he often did), he could mosey on over to Manderly and meet up with her. There was never a worry that she was in over her head, or in trouble, or unable to handle whatever situation she may or may not be in. She was a powerful and competent woman, and Bahr was confident in her ability to handle herself. It was one of the main reasons he found himself so drawn to her.

So with the angst of his original drive to reach the top mitigated, it left behind something of a hollowness. A hole that once was filled. An insatiable desire to climb the ranks and assert himself as one of the best. And now that he was actually in a position to fill that sort of role, he found that, as things had changed, it wasn't at all what he had thought it would be. There was a sense of personal satisfaction, sure, but the drive that he had originally had had faded. He didn't necessarily want to be the best, or most powerful, or anything to that degree. He simply wanted to make the most out of his life here, and be strong enough to facilitate that safely. Nothing else seemed to matter as much to him.

His desire to normalize their horrid situation, and find the way to best extrapolate meaning from it, had reached the forefront of his ambition.

It was a strange realization, insofar as it was simultaneously liberating as it filled Bahr with a bizarre sense of guilt. On the one hand, it was nice to know where his head was at, and what it was that he truly wanted out of his life in Aincead. On the other hand, he felt a sense of duty; and obligation to lay his life on the line to aid the Frontlines, and do his part to usher the playerbase toward freedom. Trapped between a rock and a hard place, Bahr felt himself at somewhat of a loss as to what he should be doing. Did he continue to risk his life, and risk hurting those he cared about most, for the sake of fulfilling these obligations? Or did he cast them to the side, focusing on his more selfish motivations and an overarching desire to keep those closest to him safe - both physically and emotionally?

Link to post

For whatever reason, a healthy compromise between the two seemed unattainable. The fights on the Frontlines were gradually becoming harder and harder, and if Bahr were to involve himself in the skirmishes to even a peripheral degree, he would be endangering himself. If he didn't attend the raids, he would be surrendering his full utility. Sure, he could craft light armor for the Frontliners, but that would be it. That isn't particularly helpful.

It was, indeed, a quandary. One he had to resolve on his own. But even though he recognized that the burden of making the final decision lay on his shoulders, he wasn't so foolish at to believe that meant he couldn't gather input from others. The ones in his life who were closest to him - Lessa, Oscar, NIGHT, even people like Cordelia and Morg, probably all had useful anecdotes. He could rely on them to provide insight he didn't have, and help him see the forest for the trees.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions, after all. In his fervor to reach the Frontlines, he had almost lost himself. He'd put the people most important to him at risk. He'd lost treasured friends. He'd allowed himself to be motivated and guided by blind rage. He'd almost gotten people killed. And despite dodging the proverbial bullet each time, there was still no ignoring what his tunnel vision had wrought. He was not perfect, and to pretend that he was - or could even get close - was a fool's errand.

It was because he had decided to go it alone. Internalize everything. Keep everything inside, away from prying eyes, where he couldn't be interfered with. Bahr may have been a stubborn man, but he wasn't foolish. He was capable of learning from the mistakes of the past. Any excuses he made for himself, such as not wanting to burden others, were mute. If he reverted to the way he was, he would be a much greater burden than if he'd simply sucked it up and asked his friends for their opinions.

For now, it was no use dwelling on it. He'd simply talk himself in circles, and he'd vanquished the respawning monkeys three times over by now. It was time to move on, both physically and metaphorically.

His steady steps guided him straight back into the woods from whence he originally came, under the thick canopy of green that shaded the trail from the harsh sunlight that beamed down from above. Everything here seemed to be painted with a verdant glow, the subtle translucency of the leaves overhead filling the trail back with the colors of nature. Greens seemed greener. The air felt fresh and soothing, inside and out. The occasional chirp of one of the local birds or the panicked skittering of any other variety of woodland creature created a soundtrack that wrapped into the environment with perfect harmony. At the very least, he wasn't in the wrong place for a little soul searching.

Unfortunately, Bahr was all soul searching'd out. It was almost surprising how exhausting simply thinking could be. Bahr didn't consider himself a Neanderthal by any means, or in any way otherwise "stupid," but he simply wasn't used to putting forth this sort of mental energy. Even when he did, somehow, it still didn't seem as tiresome as this. When he and Lessa had worked together to solve the riddle posited by Sanctuary's guardian statue, he'd used a lot of brainpower then as well. But their conquering of the obstacle only served to reinvigorate him. Here, it felt like his entire future was on the line. Bot quite so entertaining a riddle to discern.

The truth of the matter was that Bahr had been tired for a long time. It wasn't a new development. For months, he'd been tired of this. The back and forth, trying to prioritize this or that. It would be so much easier if he could pick a path and stick to it.

Before long, strips of amber starting permeating the barrier of vegetation that loomed above, striking the earth in ethereal columns with all the grace and majesty of laser beams - but none of the bite. Just how long had he been out here? The last time he checked the sun was still high in the sky. But this light held the hints of tangerine that served as foreshadowing for the sunset that loomed.

Hours wasted lamenting over a single decision. Bahr couldn't remember the lad ttime something like that had happened.

The change in lighting changed the atmosphere, too. The silliest parts of him almost thought that it felt like closure. Like one day was ending, and another beginning. As easy as flipping the pages in a book, and arriving on another chapter. From day to dusk, from dusk to night, from night to dawn. An oscillating cycle, a familiar sameness. Even if no one day was the same as the last.

Considering he was drawing the parallels, did that mean that Bahr had already made up his mind? No, not exactly. Again, it was the sillier parts of him that had thought of it - the same parts that pulled the strings on his heart. And that was really, in the end, what this was. A struggle between his brain and his heart, a vain effort to understand the forces that truly influenced him. People say that only you know yourself better than anyone else. As it so happens, people are also full of shit.

Nobody is capable of seeing themselves objectively. Nobody has the perfect perspective on an issue when they're sitting bit he middle of it. It was the difference between standing in the middle of a mirror maze, and looking down on it from above in a way that let's you see both the way you came in, and where the exit is on the other side.

What a situation. Bahr prided himself on being decisive, and effective as a result. But this one truly was a doozy. There were pros and cons to both options that it was beginning to look like there was no one, "correct" position to take. Both were right, and both were wrong. In equal measure. In the end, it was going to boil down to what it was that Bahr preferred, as opposed to whichever option was objectively best.

That being said, he still felt the need to seek council. As it stood now, he didn't actually know what it was that he preferred. Perhaps, after gathering input from his peers, friends, and loved ones, he would be capable of discerning which was. Until then, putting any more effort into figuring it out was an exercise in futility. Just as he'd anticipated, he had only succeeded in talking himself in circles. There was a better way to approach this.
