Bahr had found the priest. He'd accepted the quest. Now, the only thing left was to was fight.

He'd known about this quest for a long time. Everyone did. The problem wasn't the lack of accessibility - it was the difficulty of the mobs. For a Floor 13 quest, the bosses were extraordinarily difficult. There was an easy route, supposedly, but Bahr wasn't about taking the easy way through. There was a challenge to be explored here. Something right up there with the likes of the Forgotten Time King, and the new Cerberus. The sort of thing he took all of the buffs he could manage to get his hands on for - and still be nervous.

But that was exactly the sort of element that Bahr thrived in.

Reports from the info brokers suggested that the quest was designed for a party. No surprise there. But apparently Miirak - the NPC the player was tasked with escorting through the quest - was no slouch. He had some tricks up his sleeve to not only support the player, but deal damage back in niche scenarios. Keeping this in mind, Bahr went in armed to the teeth. If he could keep Miirak alive, perhaps he could blaze through the rest of the quest relatively unhindered.

The Wastelands of the thirteenth floor were, as you may have guessed, inhospitable. Bahr had heard peripheral legends regarding the floor, its lore, and the things that had happened here. But, having not experienced ti himself, he found the details to be lazy. The one thing he remembered was the corruption. It was all that anybody who had been around to experience the floor's horrors had to say about it. The corruption was everywhere, and had seeped into virtually every square inch of the floor.

So, too, were its inhabitants corrupted. It wasn't long into their journey through the Wastelands that Bahr and Miirak found themselves face to face with a collection of what Bahr could only describe as pestilent ghouls. The name attached to their health bars heralded their title - "Diseased One."

"Careful, traveler," Mirrak warned. "They become more powerful the more powerful their opponent is. Do not make the mistake of believing that because you are strong, they are weak."

Scaling quest mobs. Neat.

"Thanks for the heads up," Bahr responded as he stepped forward, Dawn's Demise already drawn. Moments later, it carved through the lot of them.

So far, so good. It was possible that these mobs were indeed as powerful as Miirak had warned, considering how resistant they were to damage. But they were also slow and clumsy - a far cry from the more tenacious mobs that Bahr had endured in recent memory. In comparison to the likes of creatures such as Ugzeke, or the Guardian of Fire, these buffoons didn't hold a candle.

But, staying true to his word, Bahr decided to play it safe and keep a reasonable distance. He took careful steps backward and kept his eyes on his enemies as he waited for the cooldown on Calamity Disaster to fulfill itself. It was just as one of them abruptly leapt toward him that Bahr was once again permitted by the system to pour golden energy into Dawn's Demise and let it loose, carving a red line across all but one of them. The one that had attacked perished, while the rest remained.

Things certainly seemed to be going Bahr's way - for now. The putrid husks that stood before him had yet to land a single hit, and he'd all but shredded their collective HP by now. The only one that still stood any semblance of a chance of harming him was the one that he'd missed on his last attack. A minor setback, but one that was necessary if he was to ensure that he didn't take any damage from the creature that lunged at him.

But every second that passed made the situation more dire. The damage buff that Miirak had been so kind as to provide to him was about to expire, and Bahr had to make the best of it while it still existed. So he filled Dawn's Demise with more golden light and lurched it forward, slicing into the mobs once more. Two perished, but the one that he had missed before managed to hang on - albeit by nothing more than a shred.

Being that there was only one mob remaining, and Miirak had conveniently buffed Bahr's damage again just as the last buff expired, Bahr realized that he wasn't going to have to put as much effort into clearing the final mob as he'd put into destroying its filthy brethren. In accordance with this, he opted for a Sword Art that he'd scarcely used since leaving the fields of the First Floor; Straight.

Dawn's Demise adopted an unfamiliar greenish hue before Bahr felt his body spring forward with surprising agility, pulling him off of his feet as though pulled along by the will of the blade itself. Seconds later, it pierced through the opposing mob and reduced it to nothing more than a cloud of countless polygonal fractals.

His opponents dispatched, Bahr looked back over his shoulder and gave Miirak a nod. It was time to proceed, and they didn't have much time.

By the time they'd reached Demon's End, Bahr had grown tired of the priest's incessant dialogue. Bahr understood that this was one of the more well crafted quests, and that the dialogue was meant to add to the atmosphere, but he couldn't bring himself to get into it. He was here to fight a big, bad boss. Nothing more, nothing less. The fact that it was an escort quest made it all the trickier, and one so talkative even trickier still. There was no way that Bahr could uphold the element of surprise with his relentless yammering.

And sure enough, once they entered the town, Bahr was accosted by another group of them. He hadn't even yet had the opportunity to recover his energy, and already more Diseased Ones were descending upon him - likely because Miirak couldn't keep his mouth shut, and had tipped the mobs off to their presence. Two of them struck Bahr before he could avoid their attacks, but he retaliated just as quickly, sending a Calamity Disaster rippling through the lot of them.

Despite having taken damage, Bahr was recovering it back just as quickly. Something was telling him that this bunch wasn't quite as powerful as the last pack. It had something to do with the way that they moved; they were built for agility as opposed to power. Bahr hadn't been expecting the uptick in speed, which was why he ended up getting hit. But now that he knew what to expect, he could keep up and then some.

The next Calamity Disaster ripped through the pack and eviscerated the entirety of them, all four bursting into puffs of azure dust simultaneously after the sword had been dragged through them. Despite being proud of the feat, Bahr hadn't time to marvel at what he had accomplished. Already, andother pack was closing in, and he had to be focused and ready. If he let them get the drop on him like the last pack had, he might not make it through this with as much HP as he'd hoped.

Speaking of making it out of this with less health that expected. Wasn't this Miirak guy supposed to be some masterful cleric? Capable of tending to Bahr's wounds when he got hurt? So far, the guy's actions seemed to be totally random. Oh. That made sense. They were totally random. In other words, not only was it an escort quest, but the "ally" he was escorting was practically worthless. Brilliant.

That's exactly what Bahr needed to stay in high spirits.

As the creatures approached, Bahr let loose yet another Calamity Disaster, this time unfortunately dealing a bit less damage than he had managed to inflict on the last batch. To make matters worse, just as Bahr's health returned to full, one of the damn things managed to scratch him and chip a bit away again. It was minimal damage, so it wasn't that Bahr was particularly worried. It was just annoying to see these faster models do so well where their more powerful cousins had faltered.

Despite the fact that Bahr had determined Miirak's actions were random, he had to admit that, when the right action was taken at the right time, it was a massive boon. As Bahr sized up another attack against their shared adversaries, Miirak blessed him with yet another damage buff. That, combined with an unholy Fallen proc that managed to strike every single one of the mobs, felled them all instantly. Nothing was left that couldn't be carried out in a dustpan.

"Thanks for the assist," Bahr said before realizing how weird it was that he was talking to a quest NPC with canned dialogue.

"It's my pleasure, traveler. Anything to help us make it through Demon's End," came Miirak's dry response. Bahr simply gave him a nod, then turned to begin walking further into the complex. It wouldn't be long now before they came upon the real enemies, and the whole reason Bahr had shown up to do this quest at all.

Before he got too far ahead of himself, however, he needed to prep. Recognizing that the Big Bad was likely what awaited him further along, he figured that now was probably a good time to pop a Parry and hope for the best. As such, Dawn's Demise briefly ignited with a golden hue, which flashed away as quickly as it had appeared.

The other issue was energy, as the three consecutive waves of Diseased Ones had managed to drain out the vast majority of his supply. Thanks to his housing buffs, it wouldn't take long for that, either. He'd probably only need to wait around for a minute or two, then he'd be prepared to rush in good as new and lay waste to whatever stood in his path.

The main concern was Miirak. Bahr hadn't any reasonable way to ensure the maniac priest wouldn't get himself killed by whatever they encountered. He didn't carry Howl, or any other such aggro-drawing skills. He'd just had to trust that he could kill faster than the boss could.

There it was; the energy refill that Bahr had been waiting for. Just as he'd suspected, it only took a tick, and he was back to normal. He peered over at Miirak, who was sorta just... standing there. Staring at him. With that creepy, hollow NPC gaze that they all had. The less advanced ones, anyways.

"You ready for this?" Bahr inquired, as though it actually mattered that he did.

"Yes. I'm curious to see what the diseased ones have left behind. Their corruption runs deep."

Great. The exact same line he'd used when they entered Demon's End. You know, the one that got Bahr ambushed. The Crimson Marauder's mismatched eyes flickered about for any sign of approaching mobs, but it appeared that Miirak's custom Howl hadn't worked this time. Which was good, because Bahr was really tired of fighting the same mobs over and over again. Variety was the spice of life, after all.

After making it further inward, Bahr stopped, holding out a hand to signal Miirak to stop as well. The air felt nervous and tepid here, almost as though influenced by something greater than either of them had anticipated. Bahr became overwhelmed by the sense that something was lurking in the shadows, watching them. He waited for a moment, breath hitched, until the sensation passed. Either it had been his imagination, or whatever had been skulking beyond their peripheries had decided to take its leave.

"Sorry about that," Bahr said, lowering his hand. "Just started getting a weird vibe, but it's gone. Guess it was nothing."

And with that, the duo continued inward toward whatever it was that was guarding this place. The further they went, the more that Bahr could feel it - the unmistakable pressure of a powerful Boss. It wasn't so much a physical sensation, as it was a feeling. The same feeling he'd had when he stopped the party before. Any minute now, they would come upon it.

As they rounded a corner, that's when Bahr saw it. A ghastly abomination carrying with it a scythe that seemed to possess the essence of Death itself. And, fittingly, the name attached to the mob was, in fact, "Death."

Two health bars, Bahr mused as he observed it from a safe distance, neither he nor Miirak having seemingly tipped the thing off just yet. With the element of surprise, maybe I can tear one of those down before it can formulate a meaningful counterattack. He took note of its movement pattern. Alright, I think I've got a handle on it. If I just wait until it has turned its back, I can-

"Ah, I see. The embodiment of Death. It's one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and definitely the most lethal."

Both Death and Bahr craned their heads toward Miirak.

"You fucking idiot," Bahr chided as he buried his face in his palm.

So Miirak had surrendered the element of surprise. Brilliant. But that didn't mean that Bahr couldn't still glean the upper hand from the situation. Bahr wasn't sure the implications of an entity that embodied Death being struck by a weapon with a Fallen enhancement. But as he saw the smoky black tendrils begin to crawl across his blade, he could only hope it wasn't immune.

He got out in front of the thing before it fully closed the distance from where it had been skulking and Miirak, who it originally targeted. Swung his blade. Scored a fantastic chunk of damage. No thanks to the priest who, of course, stood there with a dumbfounded look on his face. As though he couldn't fathom that his voice could actually attract mobs.

Fucking idiot, Bahr repeated mentally on loop. If he was going to ruin the entire operation, the least he could do was provide Bahr with some buffs or something.

As Death shrieked and recoiled from the damage that Bahr had dealt to it, Miirak issued a heal to Bahr. Finally. A cleric actually doing what he was supposed to do. And during the Boss fight, no less. It must have been a Christmas miracle.

But had he actually healed anything? Bahr hadn't been struck yet. Oh, he had healed something. Wait, what was going on with his Battle Healing? It was hurting him now? That didn't seem right.

There was no time to deliberate on it. Death was still reeling from the last hit it had suffered, and Bahr's Galaxy Destroyer was off of cooldown. It was a prime opportunity to score some extra damage and keep the momentum going. Fueled by Holy energy this time as opposed to Fallen, Bahr let loose another devastating Galaxy Destroyer and ripped away another massive chunk of the mob's health. One health bar now fully depleted, Bahr recognized that within two hits he was halfway finished.

Keep the pressure on. It was the only thing that Bahr could think as he barreled ahead, Dawn's Demise once again flashing with a stunning mixture of scarlet and gold before ripping through the mob and dealing another massive chunk of damage. Just as expected.

Something that Bahr hadn't expected was the Miirak for finally fire off an attack of his own. Seemingly imbued with the same Holy energy that had just leapt from Bahr's blade and into their shared enemy, Miirak fired off a laser beam from his palms. Straight Kamehameha status. It was wild.

Unfortunately, Death, which still hung on by a thread (a thread!) of health, was not too pleased by this. It lashed out with the first attack that stuck, striking both Bahr and Miirak and sapping away at their health. Bahr managed to Parry a good portion of the attack and dish back a stun, but it was Miirak that he was mostly concerned about.

"You alright?" Bahr called out over the commotion, looking back over his shoulder toward Miirak.

"Y-yes! But don't worry about me! The demon is almost slain, finished the job before it's too late!" Miirak countered.

Fair enough.

Once again, Bahr's sword sprang to life with a lethal hum. Once again, Holy energy crackled into existence and danced along the blade. Today, Dawn's Demise may as well have become Death's Demise.

Actually had a nice ring to it. Bahr would do well to remember that.

He leapt forward and drove the weapon through the Boss once more. The last shreds of its health drained from the gauge, and it disintegrated. But instead of turning into a cloud of azure fractals, it instead turned to dust that was carried away on the breeze. They'd done it. They'd cleansed the corruption. Or, at least, so it seemed.

Bahr turned his attention back toward Miirak with a confident smile sprawled across his face, but instead found disappointment in the NPC's hollow eyes. Had he done something wrong?

Miirak explained to Bahr that the damage to this area had already been done. Despite having set a seal, the demonic presence had festered into something far more powerful than he ever could have imagined. And that, while he didn't expect that it would progress any further than it already had, there was no hope that these entities would ever not exist in Demon's End. There was always going to be Famine, War, Death, and Pestilence. It was futile to stay and try to destroy them, as they would always return in due time.

So it seemed they were destined to respawn. Not unlike any of the other quest bosses in Aincrad, Bahr supposed.

Then Miirak asked Bahr to put his hand upon him. Weird request, but the strange old coot swore up and down that it would return them to where they had started. Which was convenient, because the idea of backtracking all that way made Bahr's legs tired. He'd done enough work for the day. He deserved to take the easy way back, even if the road he'd taken to get here hadn't been.

When they had been teleported back to where they started, Bahr hastily snatched his hand back from the man. "Thanks for, uh... tagging along, I guess. I don't think I'll ever be doing this again, but as long as you're saying the corruption won't spread any further, I guess that's fine."

Miirak stared at him blankly.

"Oh, right. The quest is over now, so your memory has been reset. You have no idea what I'm talking about."

More blank staring. Poor dude was totally lost.

"Right. Well, uh, be seeing you, then."

In truth, Bahr couldn't wait to get away from the guy. He was just so weird. And apparently he had been involved in an event of some sort? One that was super detrimental to the players? Like he was inhabited by a spirit or something. Bahr's details on the subject were all secondhand and fuzzy, but the guy gave him the creeps nonetheless.

Strange as it was, Bahr felt better for having finally completed this quest. A part of him wished that he'd taken it sooner, after learning just how seemingly easy it actually was. It was probably smart to have taken a more conservative approach and played things a bit more safely, but in the end he really didn't need to. Had he simply listened to his own advice, he may have found that he was capable of soloing this quest by the merit of his own prowess - not whatever consumables could offer him.

It was something he would keep in mind for next time, assuming there actually were one. Even if not, when facing more challenging mobs in the future, he might take a moment to consider whether or not he truly needs the buffs he's going to be consuming in order to fight it. He'd been surprised by his raw ability before, but also surprised by how quickly he could get snuffed out by the most unlikely of foes. It was a thin line to walk, but he was figuring it out more and more with each quest he completed.

(Is that 150 words? I think that's 150 words. Nice.)
