[SP|F22] Back for More

After his previous failed attempt, it took a few days for Chase to get all the way back to the grind. This time, with reignited determination to find what he wanted, he got up early in the morning and took a tour around the first floor from shop to shop. First to Sven, then to Bistro, and eventually, he managed to gather all of the consumables he'd need for this little expedition. He left Blizz behind, thinking it better not to bring him out for yet another round of whatever this was, preparing to set off. He had made all the right preparations necessary.

A map in hand, all the meals he'd need to take off fully buffed and the forest right before him. Except this time, he wasn't planning on going to the same dark, murky part of it he had the last time. This once, he wanted to head towards a grove he knew to exist by the lake, curious to see what could possibly await him there.

It felt odd to have unequipped his armor for once, but Chase knew all too well that even so, he was safe. He began to trek down the path with a deep breath, holding Uso-Tsuki's weapon in his hands tightly. He knew that it allowed him to hit anything and everything with little effort- right now, NIGHT would be unable to match his damage output solely on the basis that she could still miss. He would give it his best to clear out this path, and go further ahead if he found it in him to do so.

Walking down without his overcoat, he eventually stumbled into a few trees suspiciously planted right into the middle of his route. He raised a brow and began to move back, seeing one raise its hand in the air suddenly that spurted out of nowhere, trying to bring it down right onto the boy.

"Ah, looks like you tried to pull an ambush or something of the sort. You'll have to try better than that, you know.", he warned rather cockily and ran right at them, slashing widely in order to take them out- and before long, half their health was depleted. Now behind the whole group that unrooted itself, Chase had the perfect chance to strike them down. And it was to be expected that, like hell he would be the one to waste it.

He raised his sword in the air and brought it down upon them in a wave like motion, and before long, they were all broken into tiny shards and the loot was raining down upon him in the form of items upon items in his window. What interested him the most though was the vastly higher amount of Col that he got per kill. Now that was the sweetest part of it all.

Just when Chase was done inspecting the little UI that had shown up, he began to head back down his path before hearing leaves rustling from all over, but no birds were in sight. Hell, nothing that could even climb a tree was either, and after a quick glance around, he knew exactly what he had to do- jump to the side to avoid all the attacks coming his way. Another group of treants, by the looks of it. It's a shame, how the very same creatures he happened to help not once but twice in the third floor were now opposing him.

Of course, they were just of the same species. There was nothing that really pointed at them being affiliated whatsoever, which made sense. Monsters were monsters, each to their own- some attacked like these, others like Blizz were peaceful even when confronted. And that goes for before he became Chase's familiar, too.

Itching to test his still relatively new blade out, Chase held both of his hands around its hilt tightly and moved right in between all of them, planting his foot into the ground and beginning to spin- although, it wasn't until he stopped his third spin abruptly by planting his foot further into the ground and holding a strong stance that a powerful slash managed to cut a whole branch, or arm rather, from every single one of the trees. They tried their best to retaliate, and with a hellish screech, Chase knew it was time to dodge again.

That is, it would be if he didn't cut them down first. He ran his blade right through one of the two treants to his right, jumping onto the other and kicking himself off before cutting it in half. He did the same with the other two, and that just marked another group of monsters taken down much too quickly, much too efficiently.

But of course this couldn't be the end so quickly, could it? Chase knew Aincrad all too well, alongside all the monsters and ways Kayaba had designed them in. You couldn't just get off the hook like that- and that's exactly how it went. With his guard up, he continued forward down the path only to see four more enemies emerge and cock an eyebrow upwards once more. "Why am I not surprised, Kayaba?", he cackled almost, knowing that while they were dangerous, this was fun.

He was much lighter without his armor, and it allowed him to keep his earring on to boost his loot. For once, the madman that had trapped them in there in the first place appeared to work all too well alongside the playerbase- something scary to even think of. While the enemies marched towards him, the bluehead steeled his heart and prepared yet another combo of attacks to take them all out.

He ran in once more, watching the heavy opponents struggle to raise their arms in time to bring down onto him. Before they even could, he slashed at them once to chip them down to half health, before distancing himself and holding his blade with a single hand, the other floating right above its flat. He closed his eyes and opened them again, only for his eyes to glow a light blue the same way that his blade did. And with a single slash, a shockwave was sent flying, wide and thick.

Whatever it was made out of, he had seen NIGHT use it before- so there had to be a way for him to do the same. He just proved that theory of his, watching this group crumble to nothing but shards again as the familiar window popped up before him. He scratched the back of his head, looking at his energy bar and back down the path.

There was no way that the enemies stopped now, but he knew that all too well. He had enough energy for two more, so he should be good. He took a few more steps before the next group emerged, except this time they got the jump on him- or at least one of them did. Its arm had been planted right below where Chase was walking, quickly throwing him up into the air and hitting him by extending some of the branches from its body.

With a groan due to all the damage he was taking, an unfamiliar amount at that given how well he tanked hits, Chase used all of the height and momentum to go for an attack they couldn't block even if they all tried. And that is exactly what he did, cutting through a part of their body as if it was out of paper, slashing any branches off of their wooden forms clean.

Enraged, the treants all just screeched together. Of course, that didn't manage much in terms of damaging Chase, and only fuelled his will to take care of them as quickly as he could once more. "For crying out loud, just make it less hurtful for my ears.", he nagged as cockily and arrogantly as ever while his battle healing recovered all the health he was missing from the first attack, dancing between the group and delivering slashes left and right.

By the time that only one enemy was left, his blade ran right through its back and came out from the front, causing them to shatter before he could even pull it back. It had been so long since his energy last dropped this low, getting him to sigh and breath heavily. Finally, this group was done. He could probably only take another group like that, at the rate his energy was depleting.

The boy quietly closed his eyes and recomposed himself, trying to shake any adrenaline rush that was starting to build up off after all of the fast-paced action, fight after fight and enemy group after the one before. Once a few seconds had passed, no trees nearby appeared to be fakes or marching towards him- a pleasant sign if anything. He walked up to one of the trees to the side slowly and warily, just in case it was an enemy masking as part of the environment, but nothing. He placed himself down next to it and sat on his rear, resting his back and weapon right next to him, planted into the ground. While this wasn't the best of practices, it was a good change of pace. It kept things interesting and simplified them- the only things present were his weapon, and health. Everything else was either loot or damage to be healed by his battle healing. Just like back in the first tier.

Speaking of which, the first tier was the one that most of the people he knew were trapped in right now. Well... More so 'escaping', if anything. They'd get to his level soon enough, if he managed to do it within a matter of weeks, two in specific. Grimm, Katoka, Elora... While the latter two he didn't have that pleasant interactions with, the first one showed a lot of promise as a person and through his mindset. The bad part was that he was in the same basket that the other two were, and if Firm Anima was anything to go by, most people in there were stubborn and he found hard to like.

There were of course a few exceptions, like Vie, Haine and Kiluia. Maybe some more too, but he probably hadn't met them. And then there was the worst of all- Freyd, somewhere amidst all of these, convincing them that he's a goody two shoes. Tch. With a shake of his head, the bluehead tried to steer clear of such thoughts before he'd get angry again.

"Seeing what happened last time somebody kept pulling my strings, I think it'd be a good idea to turn to Mari and ask her to help me out with managing my anger. His thoughts went on and on in the same notion, but he himself had gotten up and began to stride down the path again, knowing fully well where the next group of treants was. If anything, it wasn't hard to guess with how uniform their patterns seemed to be in terms of placement near the dirt path.

Even when he thought that he had the jump on them however, suddenly roots began to break out from right under him. With widening eyes, he saw the roots dig right through his body- a few through his arm that penetrated him for heavy damage, while others worked as outright whips and damaged him more lightly. Ultimately though, he was crippled to barely just above half of his health. In a sudden rush of the life or death situation that unfolded before him, he recovered as quickly as possible and ran forwards, slamming the flat of his blade into one of the monster's trunks.

What followed was more hops and jumps about, repeating the same attack to stun them all and pull them together, before a powerful slash cut through all of them diagonally and downwards- one being cut more than the one before, until nothing was left but the all too familiar blue shards. That was a hell of an encounter, compared to the ones before. Thankfully, the only one of its kind for the day.

With his health recovering much better during combat compared to while he's out of it, Chase took a deep breath and very carefully moved right on to the next group. Attempting to use the same trick on him twice, he found it easy to predict where the attack would come from, hopping to the side and quickly turning back on his heel to face the roots and cut them in half using the sharpened blade he held. Drops of sweat flew all over the place as the berserk tank danced on the field, gracefully as ever.

The same grace that became pure, raw violence in moments of heat, like back in the twenty first. It was in moments like this, that he truly performed at his best. His mind was in overdrive, and his body coordinated accordingly, making him a most dangerous opponent. To think that right now he wore no armor but vanity clothes that weren't fit for fighting, yet his agility and recovery were still impressive as ever.

And with the roots out of the way, the next problem were the trees they came from. Not that they'd persist for much longer, given Chase already had his sights on them. They tried to prevent him from closing the distance between them, but that wouldn't be enough to keep him at bay. Drawing his blade back, he quickly charged up another sword art and slashed the same shockwave he had before right at them, cutting them in half and driving their healths to zero.

Their roots seemed to wither before they disappeared, and it was then that in the distance, Chase knew he could see something. Something that he'd been looking for after all this time- could it be the entrance to the forest's grotto? The answer laid just a few steps further ahead, and he had no reason to turn back now. Maybe his expedition would be much shorter than initially anticipated after all.

Just when the trees seemed to finally be clearing out, the first group to have smartly blended in with the environment made its appearance, trying to use the roots as tendrils to penetrate Chase from the sides in a stitch like pattern- two to the left of the path, and two to the right. They failed though, and were only punished by having their roots slashed right where they would meet to assault the blueberry. "You're competent enough, I'll give you that much!", Chase congratulated the constructs as they ripped their monstrous wooden legs off the ground and began to slowly head for him, leaving themselves exposed due to their agility- or rather, lack thereof. You could only move so much when your body was out of wood and especially the size of an oak tree, let alone a literal oak tree. "I am actually curious, this reminds me of the mushrooms from back in the eleventh floor. Could there be a similar hideout around here?"

While his mind went on, so did his body. The treants tried to stop him one by one, slamming their thick arms and flailing them all over the place, but to no avail. This ant right before them was dancing about gracefully and dodging their strikes in full, and just when the last one's attack hit the ground, he even climbed on and began to run straight for its face carved into the tree's bark. He slashed it down, jumping on to the next and taking it down along with the first.

With only two left now, he made two swift cuts to take the third one out. One to the arm, and the other right to the middle of its body. The last treant remaining screeched only to be silenced by Chase's blade running right through its mouth, letting out a huff as he saw a final group approaching from what definitely seemed like a clearing and the end of the path.

Chase had definitely broken a sweat, and if anything, he'd even argue that this has been some of the best practice he's gotten in a long while. It wasn't as practical as it was good at helping him master his way of movement and all in the game, but he very much appreciated any practice that he could get around these parts. "It's under me!", he noted and quickly jumped up, although the tendrils coming from below managed to hit him. They grazed his leg, but hit his arm fairly hard. Nothing to be too worried about, but it was still a fair bit of damage all the same. In his effort to counterattack, he managed to wound all four by chipping some of the bark right off of their log-shaped bodies, and then carved a horizontal line into all of them with repeated strikes in a scissor-like motion. "And one last hit to finish this off!"

Just when he finished his thoughts, he made a quick spin and stopped, his blade twirling right behind him and managing to reach all the way to the treant to the side, as well as to the ones right before him. As a result, they all froze with their heavy hands raised right into the air, receiving a smile and rather tired glance from the boy who seemed ready to call it a day. He expected to go for much longer than this, but he also didn't expect the onslaught of monsters to have been this intense or lasted this long in the first place.

"And that's that. Now let's see what's behind you...", he commented lowly to himself with the same smile, walking around the seemingly frozen in place treants before they shattered as he began to make his way right into the clearing. What he'd find there, he was prepared for. He still had a teleport crystal on him in case it was something worth being wary about, and he had all the consumables to patch him up and prepare him for another brawl otherwise.

Instead, he found exactly what he'd come here for. The grotto he was looking for- starting at the very far back of the clearing with vines all around what would seem like a house if he didn't know any better. Maybe if forest ferries existed and lived in massive, stone structures covered with moss, vines and flowers all around, he would believe it. But he knew it was a cave instead, probably one where most of the Treants resided. Whatever the case, he couldn't enter it on his own.

And that's exactly where the map he'd packed along with the rest of his equipment came in handy. He opened his menu to take it out of his inventory, before moving on to his in-game map on his menu and making an exact copy of his current location. With the location now pinned down, he grinned and began to walk back home once more as he hummed lowly to himself. "My job here's finished~."
