Here he was. Stealth missions.

To those who knew Bahr, it probably seemed pretty obvious that he wasn't the sort to enjoy gameplay mechanics like stealth. He was bold, upfront, and unashamed. Most of the time, anyways. But in this particular quest, he would need to swallow his pride and commit the impossible in the pursuit of those sweet, sweet Skill Points. As though to spite the mere fact that he had never once, ever, in any video game, in all his life successfully completed a stealth mission - he accepted this quest.

Would he fail? Likely. Was it worth it to at least try? Eh, probably not, but he was going to anyway. There were scarce quests remaining with decent payoffs that he had yet to undertake. This was one of them, and due to his proclivity to spit in the face of all that was stealth, it was probably no surprise that he had put it off for as long as he had.

What was the quest? Well, Bahr needed to collect information from some doofus so Captain Dumbass could plot a proper assassination. Not the sort of thing that Bahr would ordinarily allow himself to get wrapped up in, but these weren't real people. They were machine generated entities designed to look like people. Even their behavior was machine-like. While it still felt slimy to a certain extent, there wasn't much that Bahr could do. He needed the Skill Points for the upcoming boss raid.

Though, it seemed as though they wouldn't be easily earned. Just as Bahr finally found himself near his target, Uso-Tsuki, he managed to step on a twig which snapped loudly beneath his heel. Spooked, Uso Tsuki took off, and the facade of Bahr's pseudo-stealth was shattered instantaneously. A few muttered curses later, and Bahr came to terms with what had occurred. He'd need to pay closer attention to the contents on the ground.

Thankfully, it seemed as though the quest was forgiving enough to have Bahr's target seemingly completely forget he'd been being stalked just a moment prior. The NPC ran for a distance, stopped, looked around, shrugged, then carried on with a conversation with its companion as tough nothing had even happened. Strange behavior, even for an NPC, but Bahr wasn't complaining. Sloppy programming just made his job easier.

But how forgiving could the quest possibly be? At some point, he would have to fail the quest completely, right? There was a very real chance that he'd just fail over and over again, and hit some invisible limit and have the quest booted from his menu. While that wouldn't be the end of the world, the idea of suffering a time sink like that didn't really bode well. Bahr needed to prepare, and had limited time to do it. He literally didn't have the time for failure.

As Bahr approached the pair a second time, much to his pleasant surprise, they didn't seem to notice him right away. Which was bizarre, considering Bahr was wearing a bright red jacket that stuck out like a sore thumb against the verdant flora that blanketed the area. Though, again, he wasn't going to complain about the sloppy programming. More than likely, this was a quest designed to accommodate the stealth layman - someone like Bahr.

As he listened in, he was able to glean bits and pieces of the conversation, but now the whole story. Though he lamented the thought, he knew that he was going to need to get closer to hear anything valuable enough to satisfy the quest criteria. He steadied his boots and paid close attention to the ground near his feet, taking care to plot a route that would make the least amount of noise possible. This wasn't something he felt keen on rushing.

All of the pieces were in place. The NPCs were oblivious, Bahr had identified a route he could take to get closer that didn't involve any sticks or leaves, and the wind had just picked up a bit. Its whistle would surely mask any additional sounds he or his armor made during his movements. It seemed that the timing was perfect, and the approach would go off without a hitch so long as Bahr could avoid one of his famous face slashes into the mud.

But as he took his first step to get closer, one of the zippers of his coat scraped against the bark of the tree he'd been hiding behind. Loudly. Despite the wind's best efforts to conceal the sound, it appeared that the NPCs were savvy to that particular sound. They looked his way, winged their eyebrows up in surprise, then turned and ran the opposite direction. Bahr, now left exposed and embarrassed, kicked the dirt. This damn quest would be the death of him.

It was time that Bahr started getting more serious about his approach. Though he didn't possess any coats that would allow him to better blend in with the environment (seriously, what sort of self respecting tailor doesn't bring a set of clothes for any occasion in a world like Aincrad, where the entirety of his wardrobe would have been accessible at their fingertips?), he had watched enough survival documentaries on Animal Planet throughout the years to have a rough idea of what it was that he should have been doing.

Mud, leaves, and twigs. He slathered them all over his body. Did he look completely ridiculous? Yes. Was there a chance in hell that this sort of thing would work on an actual human? No. Did he suspect that there was a chance he had just wasted a colossal amount of time on something that wouldn't actually work? Yeah. But did he believe that it would work on two of the world's most oblivious NPCs?

Possibly.

Yeah. It didn't work. What Bahr hadn't considered was that, with all of the twigs and leaves newly assorted against the crimson backdrop that was his jacket, there were now a lot more things on his person that were capable of making noise. The sort of noise that would, say, tip off an NPC that you were trying to eavesdrop on their conversation. They simply looked at him, didn't so much as feign surprise, and moved on to a new locale. They didn't even run this time.

It seemed that they were progressively becoming more annoyed with Bahr and his approaches, though. They could tell that something was up, and they were becoming suspicious of him. Not surprising, but Bahr could feel the noose of this quest tightening around his neck. The more alert they became with each failed attempt, the more difficult his stealth checks against them would become. It was now an uphill battle on a mountain which Bahr had no experience scaling.

Enough was enough. Bahr wiped the grime and foliage from his jacket and took a moment to lean against a nearby tree and collect his bearings. He mentally recapped each and every way in which he had failed the mission so far, but it hardly helped. What Bahr was quickly learning was that there was a lot more to stealth than he had originally thought, and even if he had a handle now on the ways that he had failed, there were probably dozens more ways just waiting to be discovered. He wouldn't know if something was the wrong thing to do until it was already too late, and he'd messed it all up.

Trial and error was going to be the way to go here. He was now in too deep to turn back. Even if he failed the quest and it turned out to be a day wasted, it would be an even bigger waste to quit now while he didn't know if there was still a shot at succeeding. It was worth seeing something like this through to the very end.

Well, there was always the casual approach. It was something that Bahr hadn't considered yet. Perhaps the secret to stealth was behaving in the most nonchalant way he possibly could, and hoping that the reduced effort made it less likely to tip off the NPCs. It was a long shot, but he was at a loss for how else he was supposed to approach something like this. He had no stealth skill investment, so there was nothing helping him here. He needed to rely purely on his intuition and luck.

But, as he suspected, it didn't pan out. As he sauntered by, doing his best not to draw suspicion, they scowled at him and took off in a different direction. Of course, even though they were NPCs, they could probably recognize his bright red coat by now. It also seemed like they were reaching the end of their patience. Bahr surmised he likely only had one or two more shots at this thing before it all came crumbling down.

This was it. Bahr had no idea what would happen if he failed the stealth portion of this quest. This was one of those rare occasions where he'd gone into things not exactly knowing what to expect. Typically he'd do at least a little research on a quest before embarking on one, collecting whatever scraps the info brokers were willing to toss his way. But in this instance, he'd rushed, believing that he didn't have the time to sit back and research what he was supposed to do. The boss raid was in a matter of days, and every hour he spent doing anything other than quests, eating, or sleeping was wasted.

He had one more shot. He still didn't feel any more stealthy than he had earlier, so he was officially at the point where he was going to have to rely on his luck. His stupid, dumb luck that seemed to come out in the least likely of times. It was either that, or wasted time.

What's this? He had... managed to approach them without tipping them off. Was this his dumb luck kicking in? Or was it simply false hope manifest; a cruel joke orchestrated by the whims of Cardinal to suck him deeper into the quest before shattering his hopes and dreams? He wasn't sure either way, but he'd managed to get closer this time than any time prior.

He sat in the grass, back against a cobblestone wall. Uso-Tsuki and his associate sat atop it, chattering away without a care in the world. They were talking about their plans for what they would do the following day. It was all incredibly useful information, and Bahr thanked his lucky stars that he was now privy to it. There was a good chance he could formulate a cohesive plan with the information he had gathered so far - if only he could discern a time for when all of this was supposed to take place...

Yup. There it was. They'd unknowingly shared the time details of the following day's plans with Bahr, and now he had all of the pieces that he would need to deliver the perfect assassination plan to the Chief. Turns out Cardinal wasn't playing a trick on him this time - it actually was his dumb luck that had gotten him through the quest. He had a suspicion that there would have been another way to succeed in the quest had he failed the stealth route, but he was pleased that he didn't need to find out.

He remained there, silently, trying not to give away his location until they finally picked up and set off down the road, away from the area. Bahr breathed a sigh of relief as they departed before a coy smile tugged at the edges of his lips. There was a particular giddiness in having finally beaten a stealth-based mission for the first time in his life, though nobody would hear him vocalize such a thing voluntarily.

"Wait a second..." Bahr remarked as he perused the contents of his quest log. It appeared that he had misunderstood the actual intention of the quest. The Chief wasn't trying to gather information of what Uso-Tsuki was doing so that he could assassinate him - the Chief was attempting to thwart an assassination attempt on himself, and that's why he had sent Bahr to gather information.

Bahr's face ran white as he made the realization. He'd failed to gain anything relevant to the matters of the quest whatsoever! But it was not too late in the day to pursue them any further. The NPCs in question had a daytime routine that they followed, and they would soon be entering a room that allowed them total privacy. Bahr had no choice but to go back to the Chief empty handed and tell him about the mundane activities they had planned for the following day. What a bummer.

"What do you mean you failed?" the Chief demanded impatiently.

"Look, I misunderstood the job. I thought you were trying to assassinate Uso-Tsuki, so I was looking out for information on his whereabouts, times, and so on," Bahr countered, trying not to get too annoyed with the oaf standing before him.

"Well, then, what did you learn?" the Chief asked in a sharp tone. Bahr sighed.

"All I know is that he's planning to get a haircut tomorrow at noon," Bahr offered, hoping that the small snippet of information would be of some use to the NPC. The Chief stood silently for a moment, contemplating what Bahr had said while rubbing his bald chin.

"That's one of our code words. When we say we are planning to get a haircut, it could also mean fulfilling an assassination. Assuming the information you've gathered is accurate, you may have been a greater help than we originally thought," the Chief admitted, allowing his hand to fall to his side.

"This is useful information but we still don't know which way he will be approaching. Did you hear anything else that might be of use to us?" The Chief had once again become stern, his voice hardening as he squinted at Bahr. Bahr fought off the urge to roll his eyes at the pompous asshole and replied just as sternly.

"They did say something about taking a walk through the woods beforehand," Bahr revealed, folding his arms. "Considering you have one to the west of the settlement, I'd assume that's the one they meant. Are there any points of entry on the west edge of the settlement that would allow for a stealthy infiltration?"

"Actually, yes," the Chief replied as he placed a stubby finger against the map strewn across the table that sat between them. "It's possible that he could try to enter through here. If he's planning the assassination at noon, he would need to come through this area at least thirty minutes prior."

"You've done good work, Bahr," the Chief admitted as he assumed a more relaxed posture. "I greatly appreciate your assistance in this regard, but I'm afraid I have to ask you for another favor. My troops are capable, but you seem particular well trained in regards to your swordplay. Could we borrow you and your blade tomorrow in order to put a stop to this madness? We can provide accommodations - our blacksmiths are some of the best in the land."

Bahr squinted at the proposal. It wasn't that he particularly needed any new equipment, but it would honestly be silly to turn down free weaponry. "All you want me to do is take down Uso-Tsuki before he makes it to you, right?" he asked.

"That is correct," the Chief replied.

After contemplating it for a moment, Bahr nodded. "Fine, I'll do it. But I want col in addition to the sword."

The Chief sighed, but otherwise relented. "Have it your way. We will provide both, so long as you succeed in your task."

Once they had shook on their agreement, the deal was struck. Bahr would dedicate a portion of his afternoon the following day to stopping an assassination attempt. While he wasn't particularly excited to be spending his valuable time doing that, he had a suspicion that there was a chance he would be able to get a decent sum of Skill Points from the endeavor. Beyond that, some extra col and a new weapon never hurt anybody. If anything, it could be exactly what he needed to prepare himself for the looming boss raid.

When he departed from the Chief, he immediately set off toward the teleport gate. While the sun was starting to set, Bahr's day was far from over. He had lollygagged for too long, and didn't have the luxury of going to sleep at a reasonable time anymore. There was another quest that, if he couldn't do it the following day, he would need to finish that night. Though he was no longer the sort to take two quests in one day, this was the only way he could fit everything into his schedule.

His target was Floor 21, former home to Tesseleth. Apparently there was a rumored hidden city there, and there had been a bounty put out for anyone who was capable of locating it. It wasn't particularly interesting work, but from what Bahr had discerned, there was a decent col reward, and plenty of Skill Points to be awarded upon completion. Since it was going to be dark where he was going either way, it actually kind of made the most sense to do it at night. Why waste daylight in a cave? It was a twenty four - seven sort of quest, so there wasn't really a reason not to do it at night.

Bahr approached the Teleportation Plaza and stopped just before stepping into the gate, double checking his inventory before proceeding. Though he didn't particularly feel the need to buff up, he'd tangled with the mobs of Floor 21 before. He knew what they were capable of.

All it would take was one misplaced weapon or armor to land Bahr in a tough spot. Were he to have Dusk's Demise equipped instead of Dawn's Demise, or a standard Light Armor instead of his usual attire, it had the potential to be truly disastrous - especially were he to encounter a horde, or a handful of particularly bulky mobs. But, as he flipped through the equipment subscreen, he came to the conclusion that everything was in order. As long as he watched his step and didn't take any unnecessary risks, he would be just fine.

He was about to close out of everything before something caught his eye. Apparently, he had missed a message from Lessa amid his stealth adventure, and now his HUD was chirping at him to check it out. Curiously, he navigated to the messaging panel, excited to see what she had sent him. But, when he looked at the message, it was... blank.

Link to post

Strange. Had something happened to her that she had sent a blank message from an open prompt, or was this some sort of prank? After a moment of inspection, he discovered that there was more to the message than met the eye. He had to scroll to get to the bottom of it. At first, he suspected that it was possible that she'd used a transparent text color or similar trick to mask whatever she had sent, but when he highlighted the characters, no words were revealed. Was this seriously just a bunch of line breaks?

So he scrolled. And scrolled. And scrolled. Then, scrolled some more. Finally, at the bottom, in a smaller size and fancy font, were the words:

"Made you look."

Bahr gritted his teeth as humor and chagrin tugged him in opposite directions. He was equally amused as he was annoyed by her message. He saw it as a challenge - an invitation to a prank war, the likes of which could only had one victor. He typed up a response.
