Floor four this time! Try saying that ten times fast. 'Floor four.' Bet you can't.

Cold as ever. But Bahr had learned the secrets of this land from his many times venturing there with Lessa to retrieve nourishment from the White Rabbit in. With the light armor that he wore, getting the chills at this point was seen less as a possibility, and more of an inevitability. That being said, he'd grown accustomed to it. After the shock of the first blast of frigid air to his lungs, Bahr could more or less get a handle on the climate and acclimate to it.

Ever notice how 'acclimate' has the word 'climate' in it? Hadn't ever thought of that before.

Though he had official quest matters on the floor, he didn't bother with them until he had stopped by White Rabbit and eaten a gargantuan meal to bolster his stats. Because, as usual, the quest wasn't the only thing that he had planned for the day. In the spirit of continuing to pursue his absolutely insane leveling curve, he was aiming for yet another twenty second floor dungeon after he'd concluded matters in the tundra.

"Sup douchebag!?" Bahr called out from atop a hill overlooking Icefyre, the quest target of the day. It craned its head in his direction and gazed up at him stupidly, lower jaw agape as though it were witnessing the descent of a humanoid crimson god. Its eyes trailed Bahr as he stepped forward and casually slid down the slope on his heels, inertia and gravity working in tandem to accumulate ridiculous velocity until he reached the bottom.

And then Dawn's Demise carved through the dragon, deleted its remaining life, and cast it into countless polygonal fractals in the blink of an eye. As quickly as it started, it was ended. The quest was complete.

"Neat," the Kingslayer remarked. "A quest where nothing went wrong and the task was completed in a timely manner. That, like, never happens. Wonder if I should buy a lottery ticket?"

But upon realizing he was just talking to himself in the middle of a snowy field, Bahr started slowly shambling his way back to town.

FLOOR 22

Man, teleport gates sure were convenient in the world of Aincrad. Bahr often stopped to consider how much life would suck if he were forced to use the stairs instead of the teleport gates. It would take so much longer to get anywhere that it almost wouldn't be worth it. He'd probably just pick a floor, hunker down, and hang out there.

Oh god. People with orange cursors! Wow, did they need to use the stairs like that? Certainly, entering any main settlement was out of the question. So they probably either needed to use the stairs, or Teleport Crystals to get to where they were going. At least the crystals were an option. But then again, you'd need to procure them from a source that allowed orange players.

Wild.

So captured was Bahr by the implications of an orange player traversing through the castle that he barely noticed he'd made it to his target grounds. Having eliminated the nymph scourge, he'd turned his sights on something more sinister; ghosts.

That's right - ghosts. Apparently the twenty second floor was rife with them. Seeing as Bahr had managed to cull the nymph infestation of the floor by completing a dungeon, he thought that he had a chance of getting lucky in culling the hauntings as well. That was more or less only a theory, though. For all he knew, the only way to actually get rid of them was to kill them.

So that's what he tried first.

He headed out into the deepest, darkest parts of the forest and started hunting the ghoulish creatures. They were more or less on par with the power level of the nymphs - not exactly surprising, seeing as they shared a floor. But it was convenient that the nymphs he was capable of annihilating so easily shared that sort of ease with the ghouls. He'd felled three of them already. That sort of clear rate would have the forest empty in a matter of hours.

They even hit exactly as hard as the nymphs did. Right down to the individual hit point. But with each and every time Bahr came back to this place, it got a little bit easier to withstand the hits. Though a lot of his stats remained static at this point, such as his mitigation and damage, his health and energy continued to climb with each level he advanced. As a result, things such as Battle Healing also increased. It was the beautiful nature of ratios - every benefit fed into another.

Bahr absorbed their dark magic like a sponge soaked up moisture, then returned the favor. Another Calamity Disaster cut loose, and another ghoul felled. The other three that had caught Bahr's aggro found their health bars pitched to half or less depending on the severity of their wounds. And how strange was it that a ghost could gain a wound, anyways? Did it actually make sense that the ethereal  and undead could be mortally wounded by standard weaponry?

Honestly, Bahr wondered, but he didn't care much about it. The ruminations were more or less a vehicle to drive his mind away from the task at hand, which had honestly become repetitive and boring. Yeah, yeah, he'd killed a bunch of ghosts. Yeah, yeah, he'd gotten a ton of loot from it. Sure. How exciting. To a noob, maybe.

Bahr was all too familiar at this point with the systems in place that limited the potential that the items he earned had placed against them. He likely wouldn't get anything good from them - and even if he did, the likelihood of them being good enough to entice him to replace any of his current gear was slim to none.

Though, it was true that Dawn's Demise had started out as a looted weapon. A rare one, at that. Anything could be converted into a monster piece of equipment if given the proper time and care. That being said, Bahr wasn't particularly excited about the prospect of going through the same process with a new weapon.

Then, perhaps, it was time that Bahr started collecting equipment in the hopes of procuring something useful enough to hand off to the next generation of Frontliners that decided to venture onward from the Town of Beginnings. It was one thing to give beginners light armor and hand wraps that they could use to advance - it was another thing entirely to stockpile valuable and powerful equipment with the explicit purpose of rewarding incoming Frontliners and helping ensure their safety.

It was a tough pill to swallow - the idea of acquiring powerful gear, upgrading it, then giving it away. But it was near identical to other MMOs. There came a time when players had everything that they could realistically need, and the only logical progression for them was to facilitate the progression of others. At least, at that point, Bahr could rest easy knowing that he was truly doing his part beyond simply fighting.

Then it was settled. Bahr would finalize whatever equipment he needed to make something like a one-handed sword work for experimental purposes, then he would set his sights on perfecting various pieces of equipment that the community at large might find interest in using. It was the least he could do to give back to a community that had done so much to facilitate his growth. Believing that he had gotten to where he was completely alone was a fool's errand, and he knew better.

Three more ghouls met their end, and a helping of decent gear materialized in front of Bahr as a result. How much unidentified gear did he have at this point to sift through? Dozens, easily. Possibly hundreds left unidentified. At this point, it was highly unlikely that he could submit it all and not find at least one item worthwhile. Not impossible, mind you - just highly unlikely. Though, the highly unlikely was known to happen inordinately often in Sword Art Online.

He was beginning to get a bit too distracted thinking about the others, and how he aimed to supply them with new armor and weapons. Or, at least, that's how it seemed considering he'd just gotten pelted with another ball of thick black magic. He'd just been going through the motions on autopilot without really thinking about it, and while it had allowed him to carve up most of them, it had also left him open to counter attack. He'd played fast and loose, and suffered because of it.

Not that it particularly mattered. Perhaps it was because he didn't feel remotely threatened by these mobs. After all, even with a direct black magic blast to the face, Bahr's health was barely moved. It almost felt like a sphere of mist hitting his face. He could never be too sure, but he believe that the sword he brought through them in response probably hurt a hell of a lot more than whatever they'd just struck him with.

If Bahr were to change his kit, what would he even opt to change it to? The one-handed straight sword came to mind immediately, given that a particularly good one was the reward for defeating the Forgotten Time King. But then, what else? Would he pack a shield with that, as well? That would take an equipment slot. So, then, which piece of equipment would he take off to make room? Well, that was a tough question as well, because the shield would reduce his evasion completely anyways. And if that were to happen, what would be the point of stocking evasion? There wouldn't be a point. But both of his other pieces of equipment had evasion slots on them. So how could he possible reconcile that? He'd essentially need to get two other completely new pieces of equipment. So it appeared that perhaps his dreams of being a savior philanthropist were further away than he originally imagined.

Ah, there he went again. Getting so distracted by the potential of the equipment he'd gathered, and the potential equipment routes he may need to take in order to make a one-handed sword option viable, that he'd completely neglected the mobs in front of him. As a result, he'd taken yet another shadow ball to the face. And that one stunk in a way that he had difficulty putting into words. It was like a septic tank crossed with burning flesh crossed with animal carcass. Just nasty. How had he missed the stench the last time he'd taken a hit?

Regardless of how unthreatened he felt by the mobs and their attacks, he certainly didn't want to go through that again. So he killed three of them. On the spot. Simply for subjecting him to that foul odor. He probably would have killed them anyways, but he felt particularly compelled to after having his nostrils assaulted like that. Wouldn't you do the same?

There was only the one left his general vicinity, which was probably for the best considering how low his energy gauge had fallen. But as Bahr killed the thing, he took a look around and lamented over how many were left. It was clear that they were respawning now at a rate almost as fast has he could kill them, meaning that it wasn't simply a mob that he could extinguish by repeatedly slaying them in the wild. Just like with the nymphs, he would need to go to the source.

It wasn't like he hadn't half expected that from the start, but it did sorta suck to realize that he'd wasted a few hours that afternoon on a mostly fruitless endeavor. He supposed that he had the loot to show for it, but that was time that he was never getting back. Whatever the case, he now had a much more clear objective to follow, and could expect different results depending upon the outcome.

Parry: Justified Riposte activated.

Now that he had his goal, there was nothing holding Bahr back from using one of the maps that he had gathered a few days prior whilst hunting the nymphs. Why the nymphs had a map for a ghoul cave? Don't ask me, man, I'm just the narrator. My context is, like, super limited. All I can really do is observe what's happening and provide insight into Bahr's bizarre mental state. Don't at me.

Anyways, as Bahr deployed the map, he saw that the dungeon was pleasantly close. He supposed that it was possible that, whenever a map was deployed for the first time, it would almost always show the nearest available dungeon. Wouldn't that be convenient? He hadn't any idea if it were actually true, he just sort of assumed that that had to be the case, considering he had never actually had to travel far to make his way to one.

Despite the entrance to the sub dungeon cave thingy not being particularly far away, it was treacherous terrain out in these parts. Where the overflow moisture from the various lakes of the floor pooled, but were unable to form an actual proper body of water. More a swamp than anything else. Okay, so maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration, but it was insanely muddy. Like, take a step and have mud up to your shins sort of muddy. And what was worse, it was somehow slick and sticky. How does that even happy?

Only in Aincrad, man. Only in Aincrad.

He made his way over yonder, one step after painstaking step, gradually getting closer and closer to his target. But the closer he got, the thicker the mud became. Being that his mobility was severely impaired by the terrain he felt a bit of anxiety building up the further he got. What if the mobs all decided to turn on him at once? Would he even be capable of defending himself in a position like this?

Bahr used [F22] Intermediate Dungeon Map [ID: 176057].
Energy fully replenished.

At long last, he reached it. He'd been fortunate enough not to run into any unwanted mobs in the meantime, though not without some exceptional (read: totally worthless) stealth attempts. He understood that, had he been a lower level, the mobs in his immediate vicinity likely would have turned on him in an instant. But by the grace of having a reasonably high level for the floor, they ended up ignoring him - likely because the AI understood that he'd absolutely demolish them if he had his mobility. But as the AI of Aincrad was sometimes dumb, it apparently had not factored in his almost entirely immobile state, and left him alone.

Now inside of the dungeon, he found himself in an area with no mud to slow him down. The cobblestone that lined the floors was crooked and uneven, but it was still leagues beyond what he'd just trudged through. He kicked the mud from his boots, took a deep breath, and ventured further.

Unsurprisingly, the mobs of the first dungeon chamber were practically identical to the mobs that he had fought outside, with only one key difference; these ones were red. In typical MMO fashion, the developers (or perhaps Cardinal) had followed the tradition of taking a model, tweaking the numbers a bit, and slapping a new color palette on it. They were otherwise indistinguishable from the ones outside, all the way down to the sound they made when he drew a line through them with Dawn's Demise.

And look, Bahr wasn't trying to be picky. He'd just hoped that they would be at least a little different. Although, he had to admit that they at least weren't as stupid as the "Omega Nymphs" from the last dungeon, which didn't even attempt to change the color palette. Perhaps, if he were being generous, he could consider something like this to be "progress." But that was being very, very generous.

Apparently, the red ghouls refused to be as generous. It was a good thing that Bahr had prepared a Parry prior to entering, because they seemed keen on popping it as soon as physically possible. To their credit, the attack did seem like it would have hurt more than the attacks from the ones outside - had he not halved the final damage before it got to his health bar. And the magic was purple now! Considering the ghouls outside were an amorphous mixture of black and gray, and their attacks were much the same, Bahr had been expecting a red attack. But no, it was a hideous mixture of red and purple. Gross.

Bahr was unreasonably angered by the choice of color palette for the attacks, and retaliated with a fierce counter attack that ripped through the bunch and dispatched three of them instantly. The look that they dropped was, by all accounts, absolutely fantastic. Best Bahr had probably ever gotten from a single attack.

As tenacious as Bahr was, it went without saying that the mobs were equally tenacious - if not more so. After all, they weren't red for nothing.

And neither was Bahr.

As they fired off their next volley of noxious flaming balls of mist, Bahr bobbed and weaved through the onslaught, steadily advancing on the ghouls until he was readily within range. Dawn's Demise ripped forth and through the lot of them, but failed to score any particularly impressive damage. He'd focused too much on getting the attack out as soon as possible in an effort to thwart their offense. And, to his credit, it had worked. As they recoiled back and witnessed their health tick away, the fireballs stopped, and Bahr was offered the reprieve that he was looking for. It just came at the sacrifice of damage.

It was no matter. Bahr could wind up another attack before the volley resumed. Whether or not it would be enough to cut them all down for good remained to be seen.

As he suspected, he was quicker than his foes, and more than capable of readying up a follow up Sword Art and releasing it before they gained the bearings necessary to unleash their counter attack. Dawn's Demise whistled as it traced a line straight across the lot, casting one to oblivion while the other two were forced onto their last legs. Pitifully, they attempted to level their attacks against him, but they were far more feeble than before and petered out after only a few feet. It was a little sad, but mostly humorous.

"Running out of steam? Yeah, I get it," Bahr nodded. "Guy comes into you house, starts slaughtering your family. It's gotta be tough. Life's tough, you know. Or, well, not like you'd know. You're just machines, after all."

He then pointed his blade at them threateningly. "Whatever inkling of it you have will only last about another three seconds anyways. If I were you, I'd say whatever little robot prayers you used to recite before bedtime."

Bahr then lurched forward to deliver what should have been the killing blow to the remaining two mobs. Notice that your read "should have been." This is because, for some inexplicable reason, the shockwave that was usually emitted from a Tempest connection did not emit. Was it a dungeon effect, or had some sort of unfortunate glitch just occurred? It was pure luck that Bahr managed tor react quick enough to avoid the fireball cast by the one that remained.

A part of Bahr wanted to call out, question Cardinal for this turn of events. But the reality of the situation was that he was fine. His hit points were in order, he hadn't taken any damage, and he was still in a prime spot to finish off the one remaining mob. It was just a little annoying that he needed to commit yet another attack to taking down something that should have been dead already.
