"Okay, what the fuck," Bahr muttered as he took a step back. His follow up attack, a seven strike Sword Art known as Astral Hell, had failed to connect with the mob even a single time. If any of those swipes had committed so much as a glancing blow, this mob would be gone. But, for some reason, he couldn't bring himself to hit it. It literally felt as though some unseen force was pushing the blade away from the target, preventing that last molecule of health from being sapped away. What was the point of all of those accuracy enhancements if the system was still just going to deny him from hitting anything?

Though, it was possible that this was an effect of the chamber that Bahr was not privy to. As such, he opened his menu and scanned for any previously unnoticed status effects that were ailing him.

There weren't any. He was just missing for no reason.

Now that was a rage that Bahr was a tad unfamiliar with. Anger crossed with embarrassment. It wasn't a sensation he usually had to deal with, as the emotions were almost always mutually exclusive. In this particular situation, they blended together like peanut butter and chocolate. And what a horrendous feeling it was. It filled him with compulsion. As though he needed to do something, anything, that moment, that remedied the emotions he was feeling. It was so uncomfortable it was almost unbearable.

So he dashed forward as fast as he was physically able and unleashed the volley of swipes and slashes with a speed he didn't even know he possessed. Fortunately, this time, somehow, the attack actually connected, and the Red Ghoul was torn into countless shreds before bursting into countless more. At long last, the most annoying adversary of the dungeon had been dealt with. Happy day, though not for the ghoul.

Though Bahr was eager to venture into the next chamber and feast his eyes on whatever hideous combination of colors Cardinal had decided to subject him to this time, he knew that it would be foolish to proceed without putting at least a modicum of preparation into it. Parry was off of cooldown now, so there was no excuse not to get it set up before heading into the next room. The mobs there would be, presumably, tougher. That meant that he needed to keep his wits about him and do everything he could to reduce the likelihood of sustaining any serious damage.

Though, it wasn't like the Nerd Nymphs of the second chamber of the last dungeon had been particularly threatening. In fact, if memory served, they hadn't managed to strike Bahr even a single time. Perhaps this time would be the same? There was only one way to find out for sure.

Right off the bat, it seemed as though opting to commit to a Parry had been the correct call. Because Bahr could not have possible been prepared for what he walked into.

Remember the Nerd Nymphs from the last dungeon? Yeah, those were a doozy. Not in terms of difficulty, but in terms of how stereotypical it was that there were two of them and they still didn't manage to get a single hit on Bahr as he relentlessly bullied them. Well, it seemed like the dungeon algorithm had recognized its flaw and issued a patch. This time, there was a Nerd Ghoul, just like the Nerd Nymph. Frailer, and with thick brimmed glasses to boot. But this time, it was accompanied by a Jock Ghoul. Extremely muscular (for an ethereal undead) and with a perpetually vacant and stupid expression plastered across its face.

Bahr was so dumbstruck by the bizarre combination that he took the Nerd Ghoul's attack to the face without even trying to dodge.

It was a mistake that Bahr didn't plan to make for a second time. While he still couldn't fully understand how it was that these dungeons seemed to be getting progressively dumber, he wasn't going to question free Skill Points. After all, what good would a nerd and jock team do? Eventually the jock would pick on the nerd, and the nerd would then refuse to share its knowledge with the jock. As a result, the jock would either continue tormenting the nerd, or refuse to offer its strength. It was a combination that was doomed to fail from the get go.

Yeah, no.

They actually worked fabulously together. Bahr was kept on the defensive by the jock, who continued to follow him around the chamber and keep up a highly offensive physical pressure that Bahr was forced to avoid. Meanwhile, the nerd was allotted the time necessary to prepare and cast its spells.

Up until this point, Bahr had been doing a reasonably good job of keeping the jock ghoul at bay, dodging the nerd's spells, and occasionally dishing damage back to the pair of them. It was difficult, and required a lot of stamina, but Bahr had more or less found a groove that allowed him to manipulate the AI in such a way that he was taking minimal damage, if any. But, as with all good things, this rhythm would need to come to an end.

It had been awhile since Bahr had had a good slip and fall. He knew it, too. He was overdue. It just so happened that it occurred in the middle of one of the more engaging battles he'd had in awhile. He caught a piece of the cobblestone floor with his toe, fell forward, and instantly got lit up with one of the nerd's spells.

So Bahr quickly got up, ran over to it, hit it with his sword, then gave it a wedgie.

The nerd ghoul didn't take too kindly to this, and promptly set Bahr's ass on fire for it. Though, not before the jock ghoul grabbed hold of Bahr from behind and restrained him. All at once, the branding experience of 2003 surged into Bahr's mind. That school bathroom. The boys who held him down. The Bic lighter that casually scorched the paperclip to a red hot before it was pressed into his skin. And just like then, there was nothing that Bahr could do about it now.

Wow, that got dark. Feel like you learned something about Bahr just then? Yeah, me too.

Let's proceed.

Once he'd wrestled free from the ghouls, he tried to fight back, but just like in the last chamber, Tempest failed to emit the pulse wave that typically accompanied a direct contact with a mob. As a result, he only managed to damage and stun the jock ghoul. The nerd ghoul, who should have been dead by now, still remained. Damn dungeons.

It was high time that Bahr put an end to this tomfoolery. Why was he allowing this insane facade to continue in the first place? A nerd and jock? In ghoul form? Honestly, what in the fuck was happening here? Was Cardinal finally going insane? Did this spell certain doom for each and every denizen of the floating castle Aincrad?

Probably not.

But golly, it sure was annoying. And because it was so annoying, and because Bahr was sincerely fed up with fighting the damn things, he opted to make things quick. No more fucking around with Tempest - he was going to return to a Sword Art he knew, trusted, and loved. Calamity Disaster.

Long story short, it worked. Before Bahr knew it, the mobs had been reduced to azure dust, and he had a loot screen in front of him showing of his spoils. And, hey, they were actually decent spoils this time. Who would thunk?

Well, that was it, then. Only one more chamber ahead. And if it was anything like the last dungeon, Bahr had a sneaking suspicion he was about to be sincerely disappointed. Watch it turn out to be the exact same dude from the last dungeon, cheeky smile and one-handed straight sword and knight armor and all, with the bed still hanging out in the corner, with the only difference being that now the guy's name was "King Ghoul" instead of "King Nymph." Bahr would actually be pissed were that the case.

Still, he had to prep. He knew better than to venture into a boss room without at least setting up a Parry. So, uh, that's exactly what he did. He also did some mental chanting, if that helps set the scene. Just vibing, whispering sweet nothings in his own ear. Yeah. Something like that. It was actually pretty goddamn spiritual.

Was this hallway to the boss room longer than in the last dungeon? This hallway to the boss room was definitely longer than in the last dungeon. He'd taken at least twice as many steps, but he was still walking along a curved corridor. How was that even possible? He wasn't going up, and he wasn't going down. He was staying level. So, logically, he would have necessarily needed to have intercepted the corridor again at some point. When he tried to imagine the corridor from the perspective of someone up above looking down at it below, it didn't make sense for it not to intersect on itself. Was this just virtual reality black magic at work? Probably.

Oh, there's a light up ahead. That must be the boss room. Finally. Let's hurry up and get this over with. The only thing lollygagging will get us is quality time with the boss.

"God fucking damnit."

It was the same guy. It was the same fucking guy from the dungeon before. King Nymph. 100% identical chamber, mob model, stats, color palette, and bed in the corner. Same suggestive eyebrow waggle. Bahr could hardly believe his eyes. The only difference between the boss from the last dungeon and the boss from this one was the name. "King Ghoul," the nameplate read. Bahr had called it.

"Seriously, what in the hell. I can understand sloppy game design like this in your standard low budget MMO, but this is a blockbuster MMO. For a revolutionary, breakthrough piece of gaming technology. There is absolutely no fucking excuse for this. You hear me, Kayaba? I hope you're listening. This is actually shit. Well, there was no point prolonging the inevitable. Bahr had suffered through this fight once before. He knew exactly what he needed to do.

The swordsman's blade was dangerous. A lot more dangerous than it looked. Though the mob seemed unassuming and normal, it packed a punch when it managed to connect. The advantage that Bahr had was range. Dawn's Demise had quite a bit of reach in comparison to the man's one-handed straight sword, and it had been taking advantage of this reach in the previous fight that had gained Bahr the advantage. It came at the sacrifice of damage, as getting in closer would allow for greater hits, but chunking the dude down one bit at a time was a strategy that had worked. Patience was key.

Two hits in, and it seemed that it would work just as well this time as it had the last. He just had to keep at it.

Three hits in, and so far so good. Predictably, the mob seemed to be becoming quite annoyed by its inability to garner the range necessary to land a counter strike. And though Bahr understood that the technique he was using would indeed work in the end, he had no illusions about the mob's ability to capitalize on the technique to land a hit every now and again. If it, at any point, realized that it could simply step into one of Bahr's attacks and eat the inevitable damage while closing the distance, it would have a change to bury that sword of its into his abdomen and sap away a decent portion of health.

If and when that happened, Bahr's one saving grace would be the Parry that he activated prior to coming into the room. System assist would guide it to mitigate a large portion of the damage, stun the mob, and keep the flow of battle going in Bahr's favor.

It was somewhere in the midst of the battle that Bahr's anxieties regarding the possibility of the mob stepping into an attack were realized. He saw it was it occurred - King Ghoul didn't attempt to avoid his blade, and instead stepped forward and ate a direct stab into the left side of its breastplate. Being that it was right handed, and that Bahr had suffered damage from this technique in the past, he quickly pulled back on the hilt and jilted the flat side of the blade to the left, barely managing to deflect the counter attack before it managed to connect. No system assist needed.

"Won't be that easy," Bahr warned. "I've fought your kind before. I know your tricks. You'll need to pull off something truly extraordinary to catch me off guard. Standard techniques won't get you too far. Might even get you hurt."

But the mob, of course, did not respond. Because it was a mob.

He shouldn't have said that. He should not have said that. Because though Bahr was capable of learning from the mistakes of his previous encounter with the mob and adapting to its techniques, it seemed that the AI of this boss was particularly competent among mobs, and was also capable of adapting and improvising. When it stepped into Bahr's next attack, Bahr quickly pulled back on the hilt of Dawn's Demise and moved to shift it to his left to deflect King Ghoul's blade. But, as he did, King Ghoul predicted the maneuver and used his left hand to catch the blade and allow his to sail through and directly into Bahr's chest.

Bahr coughed harshly and took a step back, gripping his chest where the wound would have been were he actually flesh and blood. Though he felt no pain, there was something to be said about the feeling of a sharp object in one's lung. Unpleasant was an understatement.

If Bahr hadn't felt a fire lit under his ass before, he certainly felt one now. The AI was adapting. Improving. And with the damage it was capable of dishing out, Bahr didn't want to see how bad things could get if it were allowed to stay in a fight for a while and learn more of his tricks. He needed to end the fight, quickly, and stop this before the AI got too smart and began landing hits reliably. If it learned too much, there was a very real possibility that Bahr could die.

In the typical fashion of throwing all of his eggs into one basket, Bahr prayed for a Fallen or Holy proc and dashed forward with all of the speed he could manage. Knowing he was faster and more nimble than his enemy, Bahr first feinted left, predicted the mob's response, then quickly shifted right. This allowed him to narrowly avoid the one-handed straight sword and counter attack with a single swing of Dawn's Demise.

And it worked.

King Ghoul defeated, Bahr was treated to a healthy sum of col, some materials, and a trinket. Yeah, a trinket. All of that work for a trinket. He was just as disappointed as you are.

As Bahr emerged from the dungeon victorious, he couldn't help but notice that a lot of ghouls were still around in the swamp on the surface. Since they were in between him and his route home, it only made sense that he'd clear a few of them out on his way back. Completely eradicating them wasn't necessary, assuming that they would stop respawning now that their king was dead just as the nymphs had. Though, assumptions were never really a good thing in Aincrad. There was always a possibility that they wouldn't stop respawning, or that they would for a time, only to resume once their king inevitably respawned. Either way, there was just no telling for sure.

Perhaps they had sensed a disturbance in the force after their king had died, and innately new that an imminent threat existed in the immediate area. Or, perhaps, he just wasn't as stealthy as he would have liked to be in a swamp like this. Or in general. Whatever the case may be, Bahr didn't get the drop on them - they got the drop on him, and landed the first strike.

Bahr, unphased, new that he could handle these little assholes. He'd just killed their king, after all. A little bit of damage was nothing, and he'd prove it by killing them in half the time. Which, miraculously, he managed to accomplish. All of them died except for one, which sorta just floated there and... wiggled. Bahr actually kinda liked it, so he decided not to slay it right away. Perhaps its wiggling would attract more so he could rack up a few more kills before the day was done.

Wow. It actually worked. Ghoulish wiggling attracted more ghouls. Absolutely spectacular. If it did turn out that the ghouls' spawning wasn't permanently hindered by Bahr's shenanigans in the sub dungeon, he would need to make sure that he employed this technique more often in the future. Find the ghoul that wiggles. Make it wiggle. Attract more ghouls. It was such a simple, fun, and easy technique. Hell yeah.

But then he killed it, because honestly the wiggling was starting to get a little annoying. Got some decent loot. Then attacked its buddies as they showed up. While it was kind of fun an interesting that he'd found such an easy way to manipulate mob AI, he did want to be getting home at a reasonable hour. If he'd left that thing keep wiggling - or, God forbid, it's pals to start wiggling, there was no way he'd be getting home before sunset.

He'd known that fighting them was a gamble. He'd known it. Yet, still, he'd chosen to fight them. Why? Vanity? The pursuit of loot? Fun? Humor? Even he didn't know.

But he'd killed all of them, and now only one remained. And guess what it was doing? Wiggling. That's right.

For a moment, Bahr considered running. It was a thing that, since the beginning of his journey, he had opted to never do. But ever since that encounter with the Gatekeeper of Fire, wherein he was forced to retreat, it seemed as though fleeing had lost its stigma. It had already happened. And while he didn't feel like he was in any sort of actual mortal peril, the thought of fighting another wave of these things just disgusted him to his core. He wanted out of this swamp, he wanted out of this floor. He just wanted to go home, kick off his shoes, and grab a beer. Not that he could actually get buzzed from it. Or that he was ever particularly a beer drinker. It just sounded nice in that moment. Better than fighting mobs, anyways.
