Vices & Virtues intelligentKana is exceptionally book-smart. From foreign languages to ancient history to complex mathematics, she has quite a bit of knowledge locked away. While much of it is useless within Aincrad, she occasionally puts it to work problem solving, or impressing people with random facts. perceptive As her upbringing required a certain attention to detail, Kana has a knack for reading a room. She was groomed to impress anyone she met, and now her talents lie in saying just the right thing at the right time. Of course, this can be considered manipulative by some, but she generally has the best intentions. LoyalHaving grown up without real social attachments, the relationships she forges now are made to last. She loves deeply, be it romantically or platonically. She would do anything for those she cares about, even if it hurt her in the end. explosive Though she does a decent job of keeping the fact hidden, Kana is constantly fighting a war within herself. The mousy Emiko and the lioness Kana battle for control, and that can often result in dramatic mood swings. While she is working through this with Caliburn, strangers and new acquaintances can be caught off-guard by her seemingly unexplainable reactions. criticalFor most of her life, Kana was told she could be better. She could score a little higher on the test, run a little faster in the meet, play a little cleaner in the concert. If she could just try a little harder, she might do great things. Perfection seemed just out of reach. As a result, Kana has an incredibly warped sense of self-worth. A small voice in the back of her mind forever whispers "you're not there yet." And while her portrayal of a confident, care-free badass is often convincing, the self-doubt occasionally leaks through. disconnected While the silver spoon upbringing absolutely had its drawbacks, it spared Kana from many of life's harsh realities. She never knew hunger, loss, or true fear. Because of this, she struggles to relate to those who have. HISTORY Emiko was destined for greatness before she was even born. The only child of a celebrated doctor and successful lawyer, Emi was given everything that she could have ever needed growing up. She had the best of everything. Retired professors tutored her, while award-winning musicians taught to play, and world-renowned athletes coached her through various sports. Her clothes, though on the conservative side, were expensive and well-made. While children her age dreamed of formal dances or shared their first kisses, Emi studied etiquette, learned to cook, and met with Tokyo's most important people. She had everything she might ever want - except choice. Like livestock being groomed for the showring, Emi felt herself being molded into something she didn't entirely like. By the time she had reached her teenage years, she had grown into a well-spoken, intelligent young woman with no friends and no backbone. Eager to please her parents, she had avoided dreaming too big, or even considering anything outside of what they expected of her. Why should she? They had given her so much. Was she not obligated to provide them a return on their investment? Be either a doctor or a lawyer? Or, if her mother had her way, marry a successful (wealthy) man? Pinned beneath the family pressure and crushing expectations, Emi played the part of the pleasant yet timid poster child. Except for when she was online. When her homework was finished and her lessons were through, Emi left the realities of her perfect life. She became Kana, the fiery, passionate, kick-ass, fearless woman who took what she wanted and didn't care what anyone else thought of her. Through online roleplay, Emi lived the life she felt she could never have. She made friends with her fellow writers, and found herself drawn to one in particular. Caliburn captured her attention with his goofiness, his easy way, and his simple outlook on life. With his caring nature, his irresistible charm, and his endless sweetness, he captured her heart. They talked constantly, from good morning text messages to falling asleep on the phone. Unsure of how to deal with these new emotions - she didn't even know his real name, for goodness sake - Emi simply leaned into their friendship. She told him everything, from her deepest secrets to the weird dreams she had to the particulars of her day. Before she knew it, Caliburn became a constant in her life. He was her rock. And the need to be with him became so great that it began to ache in her chest. Her parents, of course, were vehemently against the meeting. In fact, despite Emi being nearly eighteen, they spoke of censoring her internet usage. How could she trust a man she hadn't met? How did she know if he had good intentions? What if he meant to rob her, or worse? And besides, she shouldn't be fraternizing with anyone if she didn't know what kind of family he came from. As her eighteenth birthday approached, Emi used her allowance to purchase two sets of Nerve Gear, and two copies of Sword Art Online. She sent one to Caliburn, promising him that it would only be a stop-gap until she could convince her parents, or find the courage to disobey them. In a strange twist of fate, their temporary tryst became a true sanctuary.
