[SP-F6] Adapt or Die.

Recommended Posts

The sun was setting, and through the trees of floor six, a figure could be seen sprinting through the woods. The sunlight barely made it through the trees and illuminated her running silhouette. Kana could felt her hair flickering behind her as she ran, normally her hair would be tied up in a high ponytail, but it was down today. She had almost decided to wear a dress today, she was glad she hadn’t. She was sporting leather brown shorts, and a white tank. She wore a leather crop jacket with cut off sleeves, and tussles at its hem. She had finished the look with dark brown boots, mainly for practicality, partly because it match the ensemble. A little way behind her, a screeching noise could be heard. A sound as far from human as it possibly could be, like multiple metal plates, scraping against each other.

She was being hunted.

She had gone out to find a higher level beast to fight, now she had started to feel a little more confident in her ability to survive, she had felt she was ready. Boy, did she regret that decision now. She had been fighting normal sized bird-like monsters at first. Something, she hadn’t though had been too bad, she had succeeded in destroying them all and even receiving some eggs as loot. Except for the fact that these had been no ordinary birds. They had been chicks.

And chicks, had a mother.

The screeched echoed through the woods once more, Kana cringed as she ran. Why hadn’t she stared a few floors down, worked her exp. Up slowly like everyone else. Was she ready to take on a monster of this calibre? She didn’t even know what level it was, it was twice the size of her when she had seen it. It’s beak looked sharper than her on sword and longer too. It was no use, she had ventured way to deep into the forest to outrun, she would have to fight. She pushed her heel out to heel out to stop herself, spinning around she pulled out her weapon and prepared herself.

Here it comes. As the bird-beast descended upon her, screaming a battle cry, she charged.

The bird-beast landed in front of her, Kana dodged its landing narrowly. Veering off to the side, she turned around and circled the bird that seemed to be slowly turning its body to match her. Kana assessed the birds open areas. It didn’t seem to have too many weapons, only its giant beak, as long as she avoided that it may not be too bad. Its size was the most intimidation part, it could easily crush her if it landed on her too. She would have to be quick, focusing on speed, maybe her acrobatics would come into use here too. It was so big a lumpy, its speed stat could be quite low.

She had to keep calm, she was too worked up. It’s just a bargain bucket at KFC, waiting to be fried She quipped in her mind, grinning to herself. She almost wished she had company, just so she could have said the joke. Not to mention, she wouldn’t be as worried about risking her life. It seemed it was time, she grew up and stop hiding from the dangers of the game. She had been a good fighter in real life, and she would just have to keep working at it, until she developed her skills in this world to. Who knew? Maybe at some point she could even be at the front lines with the top dogs. It all depended on this moment.

It’s now or never , She thought to herself.

There was a section of its stomach that would rounded under and would be hard for the bird to reach. That was her target, leaping forward, Kana swung her sword around hard and low. Aiming for the bottom of its belly. The bird reached down to block it but was too slow. Kana sliced through, pulling off to the right, to prevent herself from being taken out by that giant beak.

Kana was feeling more confident now, so far she had landed a hit and all the bird-beast had been able to do was swing at her. Laughing she charged once more, only this time she was too arrogant. Upon attempting to hit the back, she clashed with the beak, which appeared to cause no damage. Not noticing that it's right wing had been stretched out, and the bird-beast was veering quickly right, using it's weight to build the speed. The wing ploughed into her side, knocking the breath outta her. She flew into the air, colliding against a tree. "C-crap..." She muttered to herself. Trying to regain her footing, she held onto her side for a moment. Then straighted back up, Don't get cocky, Kana, you haven't won yet, She told herself.

Arrogance would not help her win this battle, focus would. She quickly assessed her options and made her move, she feinted another attack at the beak hoping the bird-beast would be foolish enough to repeat it's attack. Fortunately, it appeared the bird was both slow in body and mind. It made it the same swing, thinking Kana had foolishly ignored the mishap. Kana spun, swinging the blade upwards, directly forcing the edge of her blade into the wing. She managed to cut a good chunk of the bird-beast's wing off. That meant that the creature would only be able to do that move with the same side.

The creature screeched, and attempted to flap a few times. Kana used this oppurtunity to back away again, before preparing for her next attack. That's it girl, stay focused, and you may survive this. She thought encouragingly, it seemed at the moment, without anyone else to do it. She had to rely on her own conscience to coach her through this.

Something occurred to Kana, something that probably should have occurred to her earlier. She was in a forest, fighting a creature twice the size of her, and she was small enough to hide between trees. Something about this reminder her of a history lesson from years ago. Something to do with Vietnam, Kana had never paid too much attention to History, cause she sat behind Hikaru in that class. She always spent most of it, staring at the back of his head, picturing his confession to her. She distantly, remember the teacher asking her to explain the type of battle, where one side hides uses the landscapes and forestry, attacks the enemy then pulls back and hides again. What was it called? After a few moments, she grinned as it came to her,

Guerilla Warfare

Pulling back, Kana ran a circle around the bird-beast, in an anti-clockwise direction. Ducking behind a tree, so she couldn't be seen, she hoped that the games features were so realistic that the creature wouldn't see her. After a moment, there was nothing but screeching. Kana shifted quickly behind another tree, then another, slowly making her way around the bird, looking for the best angle to strike.

However, as fate would have it, despite having remember a battle tactic that could help her win. Luck, was not on her side. As she shifted behind a tree, she slipped, hitting the ground with a yelp. Before she knew it, a sharp beak scrapped her spine, not enough to severely wound her, but enough to sting. She clambered back up and ran a little way, before ducking behind another tree.

Kana took a moment behind the tree, taking a moment to breathe. The fear in her rising once more, she couldn't allow for the panic to take over. The bird-beast was simple and slow, it's main feature was its strength and weight. She could defeat this thing, she had dealt more blow than she had received. She just had to keep trying.

After all, how was she going to defeat a level nine boss in the future, if she could defeat a damn bird. This bird seemed tough to her, but no doubt, in comparison to what she would fight in the future this was mince meat. She had to work at it, she had decided to join the frontline and fight in the guild. She had taken the title soldier and she wasn't going to waste it.

Hikaru, Sakie, the church children and everyone else. She would do this for them, so that their deaths were not in vain. She would come back a stronger woman, maybe not physically but mentally. Then no one would be able to take her one, she would become and asset to the world, Oko-Art would not longer be limited to fashion. She was going to make connections, connections with powerful people. Do everything she could to prevent this from happening again. She had a true goal now, her own goal, not just her families. She opened her eyes, the fear had faded and she was ready once more. Leaping from behind the trees she charged into battle once more.

Kana took a moment to look over the beast once more, Kana hoped it was a slow regenerator. Taking out its wing had been a surprisingly good move on her part, if she could make it happen once more, her chances of win would rocket. There were also other areas she could focus on, the bottom of the stomach, the back, the back of its head and potentially it's feet, although the stomach was so low she doubted she could reach its feet.

Using her << Acrobatics >> skill! she leaped high to the right! moving too fast for the bird to follow. The bird attempted to swing at her, but missed narrowly. Phew, that was close she thought. She began to circle the bird,,depicting her next move, finally she dived forward to strike only to find the bird had thrown its body forward to, maybe her swing collide with its beak. There was a clang as her blade struck it, she felt the force of the collision cause her sword to vibrate slowly. This suggested the strength of the beyond was beyond the capability of her sword. She would have to avoid hitting that, the last thing she wanted was to lose her only weapon.

She jumped back, reanalysing her options. She would have to try from behind, hopefully by doing that she may potentially get a good hit. She definitely needed one at this point. She bird-beats hp was still higher than her own. She wasn't winning just yet.

Kana began to move through the trees, she could hear the bird -beast flapping around. It was getting restless with her lack of movement. It was moving after her, trying to swing at her with its beak and remaining wing. Fortunately the trees blocked most of it's attacks from even coming close to her. Although she was worried that if the bird-beast kept hitting at the trees they may topple. As far as she knew, there was a vast amount of objects into the game that had a durability rate, trees she wasn't sure about. She didn't know if the game worked that way and she didn't want to find out.

Once she was behind the bird, she aimed her swung, she needed to hit this or she wasn't going to make it. Shifting her fitting, she pushing off her feet, diving forward quickly. With a yell of effort, she brought her right arm across her body, slashing her blade across its spine. The bird-beast squawked as the blade connected, leaving a glowing scar along it's back, proving that she had succeeded in hitting it. She watched as the bird rearing forward. Kana grinned, and moved back once more.

As Kana swiftly moved back, the bird-beast swung it's body around to face her, clearly not happy about her sneak attack. She smirked at it, "I won't let you defeat me," She told the creature, her tone challenging it to try harder. She had figured it out by know, the birds speed was mainly due to its wings, that why it had chased her down so quickly. It had flown. But since she had cut down its wing, it had dramatically reduced the speed of its attacks. She could see that the bird was using its weight to add speed to its attacks, almost likely allowing itself to fall to speed it. It was a weird tactic, but the clumsy looking creature using it to its advantage.

The bird swung forward, it's beak veering across, Kana jumped back, the tip of the beak millimetres away from her stomach. Before she could recover the bird did it again, Kana jumped once more, but not far enough. The beak was going to hit her, but then she lost her footing and fell back onto the ground. The beak narrowing missed her once more. Kana rolled into her stomach, climbing onto her feet she sprinted away, putting a little space between her and the bird-beast. That had been too close for comfort.

Kana elected to get damage in soon, closing her eyes, she prepared her weapon. Allowing its power to build up to the point where it's release would be strongest. She waited for its power to build as much as it could, she knew it wouldn't be a great deal more damage than she already could do but it would be better than nothing. Anything that could possible help her in this moment she would take gratefully. She knew she had a little way yet before she would defeat this creature, she had no boosts to help her deal more damage. Once this was over she was going to invite in a weapon upgrade to help her deal more damage.

Once the blade was ready she swung her body forward, thrusting her blade into the creatures chest. Leaving it there for a moment before yanking it out. Red shards of pixels sprinkling her a little before disappearing. She divided backyards, their hips seemed to match a little more now, meaning that she was one step closer to winning. "You can do this Kana," she told herself encouragingly.

"Dad, When I grow up I'm going to be rich!" Eight-year old Kana told her father, who was bouncing her on his knee.

"Idiot, We're already wealthy enough!" Kyoko muttered from the armchair, The three of them we're lounging in their living room, watching that years children in need programme. Kana turned her head to him and blew a raspberry, annoyed at being called at idiot.

"I know we're wealthy stupid-face! I mean rich, like super duper rich!" Her father laughing, patted her head gently.

"And why'd do you want to be so rich princess? Money doesn't buy your happiness," He told him, she looked back at him and beamed.

"It's not for me, It's so I can help all the poor people, I'll buy them so much food, they wont be hungry no more. I can save them all."

"You can't save them all, idiot." Kana spun to glare at her brother once more, he was such a stupid head, he really made her mad.

"Watch me, stupid-face!" She retorted, sticking her tongue out at him, their father chuckled behind her.

Kana would save everyone, she had too, she wasn't going to let being stuck in this game take away her dreams. She would survive this, save everyone in the game, them develop OKO-ART's resources and connections. She would build the franchise, and use the profit to create a charity foundation. That was her dream, and to hell with this game if it tried to stop her from making it happen. With a battle cry, she swiped at the bird-beast once more, scratching it's forehead. Not as hard as her last hit, but enough to leave a decent amount of damage.

Finally they were equal, Kana grinned at the bird-beat. It's black eyes boring into hers, they were completely stoic and revealed nothing. Of course it wouldn't, it was just a monster after all. A monster in a game, waiting to either kill or be killed. Whatever the result was, it didn't care, it didn't show fear. If it died, it would simply cease to exist and if it lived it would carry on in the woods, fighting more players until it was eventually killed.

"Didn't think a weakling like me would give you so much grief huh?" She told the bird-beast, it didn't react, she hadn't expected it too. She leaped forward to strike it's throat, her blade collided with the bird-beast's beak as it blocked her attack. She was pushed back, the bird-beast slashing at her arm as it did so. Kana winced, backing off a little. "Oh you wanna play rough do ya?"She growled angrily, she was starting to get pissed off with this bloody ball of feathers. "I swear when I get home, I'm having chicken tonight!" She told the creature, as though this would offend it. Obviously it didn't, but Kana felt better for saying it.

Kana moved forward once more, there was clearly no running away at this point, it was do or die right? She felt like she had been fighting for hours, but the truth was it had only actually been a few minutes. She hoped the inn would still be open when she got back, he would probably stay up to let her in. He was nice like that, the innkeeper. She would have to tell him all about this when she got back, Kiluia too, no doubt she'd be scolded for doing something so dangerous. But hell, it was exciting stuff, and this didn't happy very often in this game. Not for her at least.

She feinted to the left, causing the bird to turn that way, before spinning right and attacking it's chest. She left a deep cut, bring down the bird-beasts hp once more, once again they were equal. Now Kana just had to keep trying to get ahead, as soon as she was ahead, the game would be pretty much over. Fortunately this creature didn't have the strength to take her out in one hit. She was lucky not to have run into a creature like that, else she would not even be fighting right now.

BOOM!

Kana whirled her body to the left, narrowly missing another attack from the bird-beast, it was clear the weaker this bird got the more violent it's attack. It desperately didn't want to lose, neither did she. She fell forward into her knees, quickly using her palms to push herself back up again. She ran forward, ducking under a branch, as the bird-beast squawked behind her. "Your a feisty old thing ain't ya, if you were a person, I'd swear you'd be my Nana!" she exclaimed, making light of the dangerous situation that she was in. Because that's what Kana did, if she didn't joke she couldn't cope.

Humour had been something she'd picked up from her dad, he was just a quick-witted as she was. She missed the times they would banter against each other, they could go for hours, much to Kyoko's annoyance. Kyoko, wasn't as much of a comedian, he pretended to be more of the ''cool-type". At least that's what the local girls seemed to thing, Kana thought it was a lame act. But if it worked for Kyoko, then so be it.

Kana returned to her method of switching between trees, she needed to keep out of range of the bird-beasts lethal beak. She had been way more than she had hoped to be already. She still hadn't managed to get one up on the creature despite her constant attempts. She wished that the bird-beast was just a little weaker. She wanted desperately to defeat it on her own but at this rate this thing could easily knock her off the surface of the game.

She couldn't allow that to happen, she had so many people that she wanted to help yet. She had big plans for the future and she couldn't do that if she allowed herself to become a handle of pixels. She still had to make her grandmother Akana proud, she had finally learned who she wanted to become and yet she was still too weak, defeating this creature was her first step, she would do it, she had to. With another loud battle cry, she leap out from behind the true and struck the bird-beasts remaining weak, not hard enough to cut it off. But enough to do a little damage, she cheered to herself before ducking back behind a tree.

Finally...

After all of that effort and struggle, she finally had the upper hand. Only by a little, but at the moment, it meant a lot, she could help but grin at this point, and she had every right to. She never would have imagined herself being able to take on a beast like this and yet here she was beating it. If there anything as exhilarating as this, she would be lucky to find it.

She could see the faces of the children in her mind, the ones that were gone. She liked to think that somewhere they were cheering her on, stood beside Hikaru and Sakie. Had she not pictured this, she would have felt very alone in these monumental moments. There was no one here to witness her first win in person, and yet she knew she was being smiled upon. Not in the real world, but in another existence.
