Her parents had always wanted a son, especially her father. Having already had three daughters, he has always wanted a son—someone he could bond with and soon be the next man in the family—rather than his other three daughters. They had everything planned for the soon-to-be-hopefully-born baby boy. They prayed and hoped, but not all prayers can be answered. Daehyun's mother was in labour; it was the moment of truth. "It's a baby girl!" The doctor cried out, and it was the straw that broke the camel's back. Rather than being excited and happy for her childbirth, her parents' emotions took a 180º. Their eyes filled with disappointment as they looked down at Daehyun. Thus, this resulted in her name: Kim Daehyun, the name that was meant for the son they wished for and never bothered changing when she was born instead. Raised in Incheon, one of the more populated and urban parts of South Korea, Daehyun had an idealistic upbringing filled with many expectations meant not for a daughter but for a son. Nonetheless, she went to school and participated in numerous extracurricular activities while balancing them with her school and social life out of consideration for living up to idealistic expectations. The expectations weren't so high to start with. She did well in school, keeping an average of B's and C's grades while participating in sports such as volleyball and taekwondo and playing the guitar as a side hobby. Eventually, as her parents felt like it wasn't enough, the bar gradually rose. At first, she had to keep the average grade of A's or B's across all subjects while participating in her current extracurricular activities. Soon, it became a consistent A's across all subjects' grades, in addition to all her after-school activities, with additional tutoring and music lessons. They had begun to build up a lot of expectations; some were unrealistically high, putting a lot of pressure on Daehyun as she grew up. Frustration bubbles up each of the many times she fails to meet those impossibly high expectations. She reached the point of just feeling like she was a letdown. Her motivations hit rock bottom, and she eventually gave up entirely. Her sisters tried to motivate her and help get her back up through the struggle. In the end, it was all for naught. Daehyun grew weak-willed and lazy, unmotivated to do anything, making her the prime target for bullies at school.
