"What?  No... McGuff...aww, forget it." A brief flash of darkness swapped on black blade for another made of pure nothingness - a void, ever-hungry for destruction given the illusion of form.  Bending back at an angle uncomfortable for the others to watch, Freyd's armor wrenched plate against plate as he performed some sort of limbo dance move to dodge the broad swing of the lone remaining matriarch's tail.

"Oww..."  Squinting eyes confirmed it. The move didn't just look painful, it actually was.  In the wake of the titan tail's passage, Freyd swung upward with the hole he held in his hands, unleashing his happy meal prize.  The concussive blast from Samael's Pride rocked the entire cavern as slumbering seals protested their sudden wakening and smashed the entire drake into the far cavern wall with enough force to make neutron stars envious.

"Okay... maybe worth it."

Not quite finished, the matriarch roared in protest, shaking off decimated shards of its own skin, lunging desperately back towards the Whisper with murderous intent.  It was like watching a skier hit a pole at mach 3.  The thing just split in half, both portions of the giant gekko lady simultaneously shattering into a spectacular sea of shards.

"And you're all wrong," Freyd continued, without missing a beat.  "The apple pie McThingies were always the best."

“Apple Pie… McThingies? Freyd, I think you’re imagining things.” Or Cardinal’s translator was malfunctioning. Was Freyd American? The thought hadn’t even crossed her mind. Coworkers who had traveled abroad returned with strange, upsetting stories about American fast food. One of her friends swore that she went to a McDonald’s where they used fried chicken instead of a bun. Acanthus shuddered. The logistics of consuming such a monstrosity aside, it sounded deeply unappetizing. Surely Masako had misheard, or invented the story for shock value.

A chime from her menu interrupted the train of thought. <<Matriarch Teeth (2) Added to Inventory>> Thank goodness. After all the visceral egg-smashing, she was afraid that the game would force her to rip the teeth out herself. She would have done it, of course, but the violence was unpleasant. Acanthus appreciated that the game gave her this one.

“Here are your teeth. The nest is dead, the Draketriarchs are slain, and you are safe to resume mining operations. At least until the next Player drops by to start the quest.” The poor NPCs couldn’t catch a break? She wondered if they knew as much.

Acanthus turned to the impromptu party that had carried her through the quest.

“Thank you, everyone.” Her body bent in a stiff, formal bow. It felt awkward, given the friendship that they had cultivated. But on some level, they still felt like strangers. “I apologize for making my insomnia everyone else’s problem, but I don’t think this quest would have been possible without you all. I’m going home to get some sleep, and I hope you all do as well. Let’s do our best at the Floor Boss coming up, yes?”
