Sunnylaros 0 Posted 14 hours ago #1 Share Posted 14 hours ago (edited) Sunnylaros | Lv.1 | HP: 20/20 | EN: 20/20 | DMG: 1 Username: Sunnylaros Real Name: Albert James Cross Gender: Male Age: Late 30's Height: 5'7" 'It's my world now. Not his.' Background: Albert grew up in the suburbs of Melbourne in a happy, comfortable home. An identical twin, he always had a companion in his brother: Sam, and although sometimes they had disagreements they were very close. As with a lot of siblings, being exposed to the same things, they shared interests and were often drawn to the same pursuits. Having a ready made partner for games was great. It started with being able to collect stickers together which graduated to trading cards with rules and fights. It wasn't long before they were both painting miniatures and getting ready to take over the kitchen table for another weekend so that they could roll dice and wage war on each others' armies. This healthy competition taught Albert that there would always be another time. Sometimes he'd win and sometimes he wouldn't. He'd just have to be patient and keep practicing and he'd be able to avenge his last loss. Apart from driving games. For some reason he could never get the hang of them and Sam would nearly always win those. 'It's only a game.' Albert would tell himself. As they got older their paths started to diverge. In their twenties, Albert had started to travel, taking in different cultures and experiences. Sam had stayed closer to home and explored virtual worlds instead, playing MMORPGs and exploring distant lands and other worlds through screens. Albert had tried to get into it so they could play together, but it didn't quite hook him in the same way. Whenever they did play, Sam would come with a fully optimised character and Albert was always struggling to keep up. Those extra reactions that Sam had naturally developed meant Albert was always second fiddle. They would still have a nice time together, but Albert didn't mind that when they logged off there wasn't really an expectation that he'd have to log on again anytime soon. So when Sam had messaged saying he'd found a few of their old boxes of consoles and games in the loft and offered a night of old-school, retro gaming with a few beers, Albert's heart skipped a beat as nostalgia flooded through him. There was the small caveat of showing him this new virtual MMORPG that Sam was excited about. But it was just to make a character and show Albert what he was missing. Nothing more. Hindsight is twenty-twenty, they say. As Albert put the NerveGear on he could hear Sam instructing him to take the support package as he'd read it was the best for beginners and rolled his eyes while clicking onto the tank package. Sam was letting Albert have the first try hoping that he'd get his brother interested a little and drag it out. Albert had used the same gamer tag for a long while now: Sunnylaros, named after a South facing valley from one of his travels that always captured the sun. He hadn't paid too much attention to the look of his character as he hadn't planned on it mattering... It was a while since Albert had thought about how he'd ended up in Aincrad. It was strange, knowing that it should have been Sam here. Sam, who would no doubt be on the front lines trying to complete the game with the best gear and build. Sam, pointing to others all the small details that the devs had added with thought and care. Albert had to admit that the world was amazing. Everything so crisp and clean. And life-like. But it wasn't real and he had struggled to accept his new reality. He had tried venturing out a bit a few times but he always quickly returned to the Town of Beginnings, falling into some semblance of a routine without really being able to pinpoint what it was. Not this time, though. This time he was going to do what Sam would have done if he had landed here and make the most of it. Maybe he wouldn't be the hardcore type pushing at the forefront of the game. But he could definitely engage with the world and accept it as an important place that was living and breathing for the players. After all he did enjoy gaming, this was just one that he couldn't put down and pick up. And he wasn't bad at games he didn't think. Until the authorities worked out a way to log them all out he'd be fine. 'It's my world now. Not his.' he thought to himself as he looked at his virtual hands, took a deep breath and stepped forward into his new life. For the memory of Sam. Virtues: Kind - Sunny wouldn't consider himself a hero. But he does believe that everyone can and should be helped. In this world where everyone is stuck together if anyone is struggling the best thing to do is be kind to them. He knows exactly what they're going through. Inquisitive and explorative - despite not knowing anything about the game before putting the NerveGear on, Sunny is naturally inquisitive and willing to take in new experiences. This is a trait he has brought with him from his former life. If he is truly to make a go of it in this world, he will have to learn about it and assimilate as best he can. Quick leaner - One of the positives of having a meta-gamer for a brother is that Suny has spent his time in games with his brother watching a natural at work. It would have been easy to let his sibling do everything and just coast, but that wasn't their style. He might not be the best player out there, but he definitely won't be carried for long. Flaws: Imposter Syndrome - Sunny shouldn't have been here, not really. He tends to think that if things had happened as they should then he'd have a partner or at the very least a guide. Theory crafting was never a passion of his and he feels like if he does interact with others that they will know more than he does and frown at his choices, or worse, laugh. His brother would have known what to do... Impulsive - Maybe that's why he never really clicked with these games. They require a certain amount of thought for the consequences that Sunny doesn't really consider. He makes decisions in the moment and only later thinks that maybe he should have taken a different course of action. It's something that he'd love to say he's working on. At the end of the day, though, the best way to do something is to just get on and do it. Unfocussed - Power level, learn the best rotations, get the best gear, be the best. That would have been his brother's mantra. Try this, try that, maybe start a new profession? This is closer to how Sunny plays. Jack of everything, master of nothing. That's not an unfair description of Sunny. He gets a look at everything games have to offer before moving onto the next thing. Maybe being confined to one game will actually force him to dip more than a toe into a profession or role. If he's going to survive then he needs to actually become proficient for a change.
