[PT-SP-01] Blueprints to Old Magic <<EAL: Artisan>>

Recommended Posts

Freyd's machine mind was a peerless analytical engine.  It made him a good appraiser, though it was a skill he also often turned outwards, gauging companions and enemies alike.  Giovanna's bizarre compass had snared his attention, along with the sudden addition of new skills previously inaccessible due to past choices.  If the constraints on professions had been loosened... a smirk turned into open grin.  Deconstructing the odd tool the NPC had provided to search the woods, he needed to recreate something similar for his own purposes.  Something he could keep.

"Malachi."

Not someone he could recall having many direct interactions with, Freyd knew him mostly by reputation. Fortunately, most of the crafting trainers were conveniently located close to each other, as with most MMOs.  A jingled bell as shadowy form preceded its caster through the door, despite the absence of backlighting, the shopkeep was less than pleased by the interruption.

"Can I help you find something?" asks a middle-aged man as his head of meticulously coifed hair rose from behind a wide assortment of tweezers, clockwork cogs and instruments for magnification.  Intrigued that Freyd would seek to duplicate a fellow trainer's item, he was nonetheless compelled by the system to extort the necessary toll. "I rarely have time for such things, but you've caught me on an unusually slow day. I won't give you any of my materials, but should you find your own, I may be able to help you."

"Of course,"  Freshly pivoted, Freyd was already on this way out the door, plans writing themself within other plans, as was his particular niche.

The salvage piles, often confused with refuse, seemed an obvious starting place.  Most players disregarded the contents, thinking them to be little more than discarded waste.  Freyd's edgy shop in Angel's Point made this place seem like table scraps by comparison.  He'd filled an entire monastery campus with junk, tentatively organized with a complex piling system.  Quip claimed he was just a hoarder.  Probably accurate, but he still successfully leveraged his obsession to considerable benefit.

"Hey Billy," words spoken in absence of a witness as he passed a side alley.  Seconds later, a confused devil child pokes his head out from the secret treasure pile concealed within.  Part of the appraiser quest he'd completed in the distant past, Freyd still tweaked that particular NPC's foibles every change he got.  A few odds and ends left in the alley might serve his needs.  Cylindrical casing, probably from an old music box or jewelry case.  Two fine scalpel blades, dulled and different colours, but made to slide into a pen-like housing, like an old-fashioned cutting knife.

"These will do."

Pocketed and added to a running mental inventory for real time assembly in the not-so-distant future, Freyd's gaze turned to a nearby junk dealer's table. Stray, half-empty spools of fine wire mixed in with a buffet of other flotsam.  Keen eyes instantly upon the prize, haggling to follow promptly while feigning interest in other fare. The Whisper's true intentions never revealed, yet components obtained through guile and misdirection.  He was actually enjoying himself, trailing after nothing more than the barest of clues, wondering whether it might lead to something conceived in the darkest of darks.  An idea, sprung fully formed, as Athena was born from Zeus.  If true, it would be raw, need smelting and refining into proper, malleable ore.  Otherwise, another terror let loose by misguided ambitions mixed with the first inklings of better guided intentions.  Salvageable.  Maybe.  Much work remained and his talents were focused in other areas.

"A chance for growth, at last." Words spoken aloud, as if some secrete blessing only made real by the blending of wind and vocal chords.  Magic manifested by transition of plausible to real.

Exciting.  But, is this the same sensation that drives Mari to her endless mischief?

A pause for consideration, signaled by the ring of truth behind the thought.  Worth further consideration, and understanding.

Sundry other items collected, Freyd made the rounds of the environs, plucking from what others would ignore or discard. The recycling mascot from his old elementary school would be so proud.

"Hrm... a glass face to suit?  That might be a taller order.  But, Malachi would surely have the proper tools and cutters.  I just need..."

Where to find a conveniently sized pane to serve his needs. It wasn't like he could just pluck one from somebody's window, at least not without unwarranted sanctions and consequences.  Most of those would also be too thick for his purposes.  Flat glass also rarely survived getting tossed, meaning the scrap heaps would unlikely offer what he needed.

"Maybe a smith's furnace?  Most around here would be too crude.  And I can't really have it curved."

Nothing immediately jumped to mind, exploration ongoing as he scanned every option and opportunity.  There was always the more ridiculous approach...

One of the unique aspects of Aincrad's crafting system was that everything revolved around the ubiquitous 'material' as its raw protoplasmic currency.  You could gather an eggplant and process it through the system mechanics into a vase, timber beam, sandwich or katana.  As bizarre as it was, it worked, without carrying over any aspect of the original form or substance.  At least, at the most basic levels of transmutation, the principles held true.  Few people were eager to try a steel smelted hot dog, or chug sulfuric acid turned cider without some understandable trepidation.  The close you were in relation between the intended forms, the better its worked out.  Appraisers did this regularly with items, though few people realized it.  Taking some amorphous hunk of armor and turning it into the most epic of epically epic doo-dads took a balance of willpower, vision and luck.

"Glass, eh?  Could try gathering some carefully sifted sand.  If it's light enough in colour..."

Returning to the shop less than an hour after his departure, Freyd laid out all of his scavenged materials across the trainer's work table, eagerly engaging in speculative jargon and technobabble like some sort of DIY maniac, complete with excessive jazz hands.  Carefully tinkering away, seeking the NPC's insights at every turn, he produced what was heretofore impossible: an appraiser crafting a trinket, not just identifying some randomly collected bit of dead mob paraphernalia.  The components required considerable time and effort to individually shape and alight, several having to be re-worked over and over again until they could finally be fused into the whole, but it was worth it.

Cradling his newly minted, heavily worn looking cursed compass, Freyd felt a singular pride and curiosity as to whether it would work the same way as the one it was designed to emulate.  Holding it forth, he flipped open the lid and watched as the needle bobbed and spun, calibrating itself to its wielder's intent.

"Huh..." the breathy gasp conveying sentiments of surprise and satisfaction.  "Not what I was really expecting..."
