   An American student, Kris has benefited from the (minor) wealth of his family for much of his life. It allowed him to always have what he wanted, within financial reason, buy the friendships of other, less fortunate, classmates, and study abroad. Staying in Tokyo, Japan, and attending high school there was one of a series of many semesters of school spent abroad. He never really cared that much for school, but knew he wasn't getting out of it, so to make the most of it, he traveled to other countries as he did so. He's always had a fascination with hand weapon combat styles around the world, and whatever country he's been in, whether it's Germany, Italy, or Japan, he's studied at least a little of their melee combat traditions. This fascination, and the idea that he could use his knowledge of combat in SAO, is what drew him to the game.

 

  Kris is used to being able to get things his way, with a little work and cleverness. When in a difficult situation, he will push as far as he can to improve it, without risking causing a problem for himself (unless there's a good reason for the risk). He's also a very independent person. He's not anti-social, and is happy to accept help from people, but also needs to know that he CAN do things himself, and he can choose to take help to make things easier.

 

» Virtues:

 

1. Fortitude- Kris's Honor and just behavior are paramount to him. Because of this, he chooses his words carefully, and doesn't say things he doesn't mean. Bribery and other similar temptations will have no effect on him, as he will refuse to betray his Honor for any reason. Though he may stand to gain a great deal by betraying a friend, or stealing something, or perhaps even harming someone he doesn't know, he will accept whatever consequences there are for not doing so, and give up whatever he stood to gain. This is not for any external reason, such as fear of divine retribution, but because of deeply held personal principles about what makes him worth something and significant.

 

2. Charity- Kris cares more about others than himself. He doesn't feel that anything he's ever gained (except perhaps his meager martial prowess) has been deserved or earned. Everything seems to have been handed to him, or already been within his capabilities due to natural talent. He doesn't see himself as being a strong person, or someone worthy of note. That is the underlying reason for his charity; he believes that others can make better use of, or more greatly deserve, his gifts and possessions. Due to this fact, he also will give up anything he knows he can't make use of, or things he feels others can make better use of than himself. If he DOESN'T feel that someone can make use of his charity though, he won't give it. (see Callous)

 

3. Honor- Kris's philosophy that other people are worth more than him (due to their ambition, or willpower, or devotion to a cause, or what have you) has driven him to decide that he ought to determine his worth by his Honor. As such, he believes that the sole factor that shows whether he is worth something as a person is his Honor. Because of this, he will not impugn his Honor in any way, be that lying (even by omission), breaking a promise, or other such bonds or Oaths. If Kris were to dishonor himself in such a strong way as say, betraying a friend of his, or going back on an Oath, he would likely kill himself. It is of utmost importance to Kris to keep his word, and he will knowingly throw himself at certain death if his Honor requires it. Because of this, however, Kris is VERY selective about who he will make promises to. He avoids committing his word to others as much as possible.

1. Arrogance- Kris is certain in anything he believes. If he believes he CAN do something, he will not back down from that claim no matter what, unless it can be PROVEN that he CAN'T. And anything he doesn't know he CAN'T do, he believes he CAN do, with enough effort and willpower. This flaw stems from the same willpower behind his Fortitude virtue, meaning that in the same way that his Fortitude won't let him compromise his principles, his willpower and certainty therein won't allow him to lose confidence in a task...even when he should really just cut his losses. If he feels that something is worth risking himself for, (i.e. it's POSSIBLE but will be very difficult, and is for something very necessary or important) he will do so. It doesn't matter what the odds are that he fails, even if that means death.

 

2. Callous- Kris has essentially indomitable willpower (for better or for worse), and also feels that he is nothing really special as a person. The combination of those two things has led him to believe that anyone can have the same degree of willpower and stubbornness he does, and if he sees that someone doesn't have that same determination, he perceives them as weak. This perception leads him to think less of that person, and if they don't already have distinguishing traits that make them obviously significant, he'll not care about that person. He won't even feel his normal impulse to give charity to them, because he feels that they will make even less of his charity than HE can.

 

3. Shameless- Kris doesn't care if something he says offends you. He's not malicious about things, normally, but if you take a joke he makes as being offensive, or otherwise complain or "whine" because of something he says, he's gonna laugh at you and ignore you. If you get upset at something he says, he takes that as a sign that you CHOSE to be upset by that, and therefore are weak-willed. Continued whining at him about, "your delicate sensibilities" will drive him to completely give you the cold shoulder and no longer want to help you whatsoever. Sometimes he will say something that he thinks you might find offensive, just to see how you react, and therefore whether you're "worth anything" or, "important".
