[PP-01] Secret Medicine of the Forest

Recommended Posts

Pandora walked through the quiet and somber Horunka Village, silently berating herself for stepping into potentially hostile territory unprepared. She had taken a look at the Beta tester's manual from the general store, and though she hadn't bought the thing, it was good enough for her to have remembered the details of this particular quest, the «Secret Medicine of the Forest», which could be taken by walking into an NPC house and asking discreetly how to help a certain coughing girl. Pandora didn't have any further details, but she hoped it would be enough to last through until she actually received the quest. Sighing, she observed the buildings lining the sandy path, looking for an open door that she could peek through.

There were several small houses on this particular street, and Pandora noticed one door, slightly ajar, radiating an inner light. Perhaps that was her objective. She walked briskly up to the house, shivering in the dusk sky, and pushed open the door, only to be blasted by warm air. Looking in, she saw a humanoid figure in a country-styled dress, moving a bowl of water and a wet towel. Warily, she pushed the door open so that she could walk in and sit down on a chair, and watched as the NPC woman disappeared briefly behind another door, stealing a look at Pandora before doing so.

Elyth had been visiting Agatha, the female NPC child who was the recipient of the Â«Little Nepent’s Ovule» from the Â«Secret Medicine of the Forest» quest. That quest had been her first, and she was quite pleased to see such a familiar face as Agatha's after a long time. Agatha herself apparently didn't forget Elyth's face either, and thanked Elyth fully. Elyth had then proceeded to hug Agatha really tightly, before the NPC girl began to cough again.

"Agatha! What's wrong?" Elyth asked, alarmed. She turned to face the mother NPC, who had just entered the room with a bowl of water.

"Oh, no, Agatha's sickness must be coming back again," the lady said, rushing to her daughter's side, feeling the gentle flush that had quickly overtaken Agatha's cheeks and forehead. The lady turned to Elyth, a look of desperation on her face, and pleaded. "Please, adventurer, go find the Â«Little Nepent’s Ovule» again! A sword shall be your reward."

By that time, Elyth had already marched out into the other room. There was another girl there, and... not an NPC? Then this girl must have had triggered the quest! And she looked significantly weaker than Elyth, so there was no way Elyth was letting her- Pandora -go out there alone. "You! You're here for the quest, right? Hurry and go accept it in the other room! I'll go with you to the forest!"

The room was a warm color of furnished wood and white-washed floorboards. Pandora stared at the table, and marveled at its sublime softness before curling up to wait for the quest-giving NPC to come out from the other room. Were tables actually supposed to feel soft? She knew the question wouldn't torment her much, but she still thought it. As if to break her reverie, a firm stomping noise came from the other room, and out into the room Pandora was in. The noise came from a girl whose hair was white with the exception of a tint of purple, and she, appearing alarmed, gestured to the other room and Pandora. "You! You're here for the quest, right? Hurry and go accept it in the other room! I'll go with you to the forest!"

"A Quest? What is it?" Pandora asked softly, as not to alarm the other girl- Elyth, as she could read above the other girl's HP bar- any further, and pushed herself out from under the table. With a hand on the table, she picked her body up from the seat and walked over to the other girl, stopping close by the door and peeking in. There in a bed lay a young girl and the lady from earlier, gently caring for her. Pandora was taken by the affection and suddenly understood by Elyth would be so alarmed. She entered the room, and walked up to lady.

"You brought another adventurer, Elyth? Well, please, adventurers, go find the Â«Little Nepent’s Ovule»! A sword shall be your reward. Time is of the essence!" the lady said, looking up as Pandora's figure cast a shadow over the coughing girl.

"Quest... accepted," Pandora said, voice even, and looked to Elyth. She then walked out of the room, and out onto the dirt path, waiting.

"A Quest? What is it?" Pandora asked, and before Elyth could reply, stood up and walked over to the door, where she accepted the quest from the lady NPC, and then proceeded to run out the door after glancing momentarily at Elyth. Oh, okay, guess I'll explain as we run, Elyth thought, and walked out after Pandora. The two stood on the dirt path for a moment before Elyth decided to take the lead.

"Pandora, is it? I'll guide you to the forest. Please, follow me, and accept this party invite," Elyth said, and summoned her HUD, sending Pandora a party invite. She continued speaking, all the while walking towards where she remembered the location of the Â«Little Nepent» to be. "Alright, well, this quest is called Â«Secret Medicine of the Forest», and we're basically retrieving an item called the Â«Little Nepent’s Ovule» from the mob Â«Little Nepent», which we're going to fight. Each one of them is level 3, and have 6 HP each. Oh, and there are three versions of the Â«Little Nepent»- normal ones, ones with flowers on their heads, and ones with fruits on their heads. We'll need to fight the normals to lure out the flower ones, and avoid the fruit ones because they attract other nepents. Got it?"

Elyth spun around to face Pandora again, and smiled. "Don't worry, okay? We'll beat them and rescue Agatha!" Taking Pandora's hand, she continued. "Let's go!"

Pandora was stunned by this girl's suddenness, and stared in fascination as Elyth's hair swayed from side to side as she kept on talking. An almost opaque screen appeared in front of Pandora's face, not unlike her HUD. She considered Elyth's trustworthiness, not forgetting what Elyth had done just earlier for the NPC girl, and tapped lightly on the blue "O" button. In doing so, she had just accepted Elyth's "party invite." What exactly was a party, she wondered, and kept a mental note to ask Elyth later.

Meanwhile, Elyth kept talking, giving Pandora some information about the quest she had just accepted, including the Â«Little Nepent»s that she and Elyth would have to fight. They had more HP than Pandora did, too. At least Elyth seemed more experienced than she was. They would not have much difficulty with the fighting part.Though she didn't really understand everything Elyth had spewed out just then, she decided to just fight when the situation called for it. Elyth twirled around, and grabbed Pandora's hand. "Don't worry, okay? We'll beat them and rescue Agatha! Let's go!"

"Agatha? Is that the younger NPC's name?" Pandora asked between short breaths as Elyth dragged her, running towards Â«Horunka Forest», where the quest took place. The forest was tall and disorienting. And, the sky above the forest was significantly more cloudy than that of the sky behind the two. Pandora wondered exactly how scary this experience would be, but soon shook away the thought. "We're here. Let's go find those Â«Little Nepent»s, Elyth."

The two adventurers entered the forest of Â«Horunka Forest», and Elyth equipped her battle gear: the Â«Hell Fang», «Prismatic Weave Top»,  and Â«Mist Weave Coat», all player-crafted items with several benefits. She looked over at Pandora, and noticed how the girl was wearing starter gear. Oh dear, she should've noticed that before.

"Oh, my, this is going to be a bit hard, huh. Well then, Pandora, please attack from a distance behind me. I'll try my best to distract the Â«Little Nepent»s from attacking you," Elyth said, considering the situation. She didn't have the hate skill so she couldn't guarantee that no Â«Little Nepent» would attack Pandora, but she would try to attack the mobs to distract them. Hmm... Not a bad plan, but not exactly good either. Elyth turned back into the forest, drawing her sword. She motioned for Pandora to do the same, albeit with her spear instead of the sword.

As the two walked a little further into the forest, Elyth noticed a certain crunching noise from up ahead. "Do you hear that?"

A moment later, a Â«Little Nepent» with a fruit on its head waltzed into view. The mob was grinning, giant red lips parted to reveal white teeth. Elyth grabbed her sword, and activated her sword skill, stabbing at the Â«Little Nepent». But alas, the Â«Little Nepent» was too fast. Elyth missed, and was hit instead. At least the mob was focused on her and not on Pandora.
