[PP-F1] You Can Work...Or You Can Fish (???) <<Earning a Living>>

Recommended Posts

It was early, 4am game-time, actually. The sky still looks like night! Regardless, Reu made his way across the fields towards the Lake. He had double-checked his supplies, and he even made sure he packed lunch too! Cautiously approaching the lake, he first noticed how quiet it was. Just the sound of chirping insects, with the occasional droop, droop noise coming from the lake. Nearing the pier, he looked for the old lake-house affixed to the end of the pier. The wooden sign, worn down from the weather, was barely legible. Still, you could make out the letters if you looked close enough. Indeed, the slanted sign read, 'Bait and Tackle, Home of Aincrad's First Fisherman!'.

Eager to meet the fisherman, Reu walked out onto the dock, the boards underneath his feet squeaking with every step. Turning to face the front-door. Reu knocked, three times...knock...knock...knock...

??? sat in the shack, counting his worms and supplies. Then he heard the knock. Slowly,  ??? got up and walked to the door, weary of it being a player killer. When he creaked open the door, ??? was happy to see that the player was not a player killer. It was a fisherman. A fellow one. Yay! Is that good or bad? Which one..........??? noticed that the game had not given the player a fishing pole yet. Maybe it would when they got to the dock? ??? really wanted to buy a boat sometime.

"Why, hello my friend! Who might you be?"

Cast in darkness, the only illumination coming from the interior of the 'Bait & Tackle', Reu smiled when meeting the short, blue-haired fisherman.

"My name is Reusririasuir, and I came to learn from Aincrad's very first fisherman!"

"I have heard that you are an excellent fisherman ???, and I humbly ask that you allow me to study under you. I will train hard! Study hard! And ...fish hard!" Reu bowed, hoping to show respect, as well as the seriousness of his intentions. Behind him, you could hear the early-morning sounds of the lake, the insects, and nature. Reu was hoping to begin soon, he wanted to begin before first light.

  • 4 weeks later...

(OOC: ??? has disappeared, I am going forth alone, and will write him out).

Looking back, the next several moments were a blur to Reusrirasuir, being handed a fishing vest, a very fine fishing hat, a tackle-box with an assortment of bob's and lure's, four pieces of fishing bait, and finally, being sent out in a small fishing boat, alone. Slowly drifting out on the lake, Reus looked around wondering just what he was supposed to do next, other then listen to the sound of chirping crickets. He was all dressed up and without a fishing pole. *sighing* Reu looked out over the still waters, suddenly he saw the surface of the water break. *droop* Suddenly, in another direction, it did it again. *glup*

Reu could feel an itch to get to fishing. Channeling his excitement though is what fishing was all about, knowing this, Reu decided to look around bottom of the small boat. hoping to find a pole.

Sadly, he found the boat contained nothing of the sort. Rejected, Reu sat back on the bench and looked over the side of the boat, out over the water. All I want to do is fish...

Reu felt his small boat continue to drift out over the mostly silent lake. Only the quiet sounds of the occasional jumping fish was all to be heard. He was so far out now, near the middle of the lake, that the sound of chirping crickets were too far away, resulting in an eerily, quiet silence..

This silence slowly moved its' way into Reu, who had been quietly sitting in his fishing boat, with only his thoughts keeping him company. Eventually, the silence overtook the thoughts, and all Reu was left with, was a clear mind of perfect silence. Sitting on the small bench of this very tiny fishing boat, Reu cast his gaze above him and looked at the stars above, slowly tracing the constellations of the star-lit sky, one by one.

Finally, with a mind of complete serenity, Reu navigated his small fishing boat, back to the dock. His small boat was the only thing on the water, the darkness filled the void behind him, as his little boat left a small wake on the surface of the lake.

Reu slowly stepped from the fishing boat, to the dock. There, nailed into a small pillar on the rotted-out dock, was a note, hastily handwritten and addressed to no one in particular. Peering down, Reu read it by the light of the lantern.

"Well, you either found it or you didn't.

I've shown you the first step, so please

continue on or go find another path.

Feel free to continue to use my boat,

though you best make sure you tie and

rig it, and, in the event of storms, bring

it ashore.

More bait's in the shop, I recommend

getting an early start on the days

you do fish, it gets hot out on the lake.

I've things need doin' so I won't

be around. You can figure most

things out yourself though; just

give it time.

Sincerely,

???, Aincrad's First Fisherman!

Standing up, Reu knew the the path that was right for him. After sitting out on the lake, letting the silence overtake him, finding a peace of mind within himself, he was now certain-he would become a fisherman! Moving carefully down the pier, each board seeming to squeak, he turned left and moved into The Bait & Tackle, which ??? had left open for his use. He understood why he had been sent out without a fishing pole, and now wanted to find his pole. Looking through the shop, he saw a fine collection of rods, but he didn't want to be greedy, and so he selected the Old Fishing Rod and returned home for the day.

He spent the rest of the day dry-casting, and practicing his technique. Later that night, staring out the Inn window, he could see the Lake in the distance. Tomorrow, he would wake up and go back out on the lake. He would become a fine fisherman, of that he was certain.

Trotting down to the lake, he was ready. Dressed in his fisherman's outfit, with his very fine fisherman's hat, Reu placed his fishing pole into the boat, and kicked off from the dock. He was feeling good, awake despite it being such an early hour, he had eaten before he left and had remembered to grab his lunch as-well. It was going to be a good day he thought to himself.

Drifting on the water, Reu took a moment to find his serenity and then calmly grabbed his first piece of fishing bait. Looking out over the dark waters, he selected his casting spot. He finished rigging the bait, drew his rod back, listened to the ziiincht sound sent out from his rod as he cast his line, listened to the plop as the lure landed in the water, and watched it slowly slink into the depths of the lake.

Sitting back, he relaxed, and finally, he was fishing.

Memories flooded Reu's thoughts. He was calm, enjoying that he was fishing, but he was enjoying it because it reminded him of home. He had never enjoyed fishing in the real world, but his previous girlfriend had. The first time she went fishing she caught five fish by herself, more then everyone else ended up catching combined. That was a good day. That was such a long time ago... That was an enjoyable day.

As much as he tried to not think about home, in some way, here out on the lake fishing, it was one small private memory he would allow himself to experience. The absurdity of it, an activity he doesn't even really enjoy in real life, is now his escape from this death-game. Staring out over the water, he felt calm...even though he was thinking of home, his calm state of mind hadn't left him.

Fishing was an opportunity for him to think about home; fighting, leveling, even helping other players, all those things required his attention and focus and his...mindfulness, but here, out on the water he could find both. He could think of home, and yet still be mindful of the rod. It was a good feeling. Fishing, would be his very small escape.

Suddenly, the lure dropped. Excitedly, Reu slowly, and very carefully sat up. He checked his line, ensuring it wasn't overly-slack, nor that it was overly taught. Then he began to reel his line in. Slowly and forcefully he turned the handle, so as to draw in the line. He could see out on the lake the fishing line was moving left and right, though the resistance was firm, it wasn't overly-so. Reu felt he had a good handle on the pole, he felt he was doing his best with his catch, being careful to not snap the line. Finally, he brought in the last bit of line from his pole, he watched his catch break the surface of the water, and felt complete and total disappointment.

There, at the end of his hook, was a Soggy Boot. Not even a pair of boots, one soggy, rotted-out boot. Sighing, Reu took the boot off the line and placed it in the boat; no point in returning trash to the lake. Reu re-did the bait, re-cast his line, and sat back. Ahhh, trial and error; so's life. No point in getting upset.

Reu decided he would sit out on the water a bit longer. The weather wasn't bad. The small insects weren't buzzing yet, the sky was still dark. All in all, it's a pretty enjoyable morning. The quietness of the lake was certainly welcoming compared to the hustle and bustle of the Starting City. Speaking of the Starting City, looking over his shoulder, he could see the lights of the city. Well, lights isn't really the right word. Too many people confuse lights for electricity, but here Reu was simply meaning lights as in illumination, as in illumination from burning torches. The soft oranges and red's lept from the torches, but out here, it was almost completely black still.

Reu loved the darkness like this as it was so calming to just feel enveloped in an cocoon of blackness, with nothing but silence keeping yourself company. Looking at the water, Reu reached his hand out and dipped it in the water. It was cool, though not cold, more of a room-temperature feel because of the temperate spring weather of the first-floor. Reu watched the water run between his fingers as his small boat drifted along the lake. Keeping an eye on the rod between his legs, Reu sat for a moment, simply enjoying being out on the water.

Suddenly, the lure dropped. This time, Reu was ready, he quickly pulled in the reel, and felt his line draw tight. This was exciting. He knew he had a fish this time, their was too much movement for it to not be something alive. Watching the line move back and forth, Reu slowly walked the fish in. He would bring it in, let it back out, bring it in, let it back out. These things require patience. What most people don't realize, is that once you have the fish hooked, you've almost caught the fish as long as you don't break the line. Fish once hooked, don't generally break the hook free, it's entirely up to the fisherman to break his line at that point. So Reu took his time reeling the fish in, and before he knew it, he was lifting his catch out of the water and bringing it over into the boat.

"Whoa now!" Reu was standing up, trying to keep a hold of the medium-sized fish in his prosession. It was a medium-sized Salmon, though it wouldn't hold still long enough for Reu to do a proper item identification. He finally managed to get grips on the fish, and slip it into his inventory. There, he was able to do a proper item identification on his crafted item. "Oooooh, this is an excellent fish. A Coho Salmon, featuring a +2 LD bonus when eaten or cooked with! I should be able to sell this for a high price when I open my fish stand!" Reu sat back with a large smile on his face, happy with his work.

Reu brought his fishing boat to port, and tied it down to the dock. Hopping out, he went ahead and starting making his way back to the Starting City. All the excitement had made him hungry, and because he had already done enough fishing for one day, he wanted to head back and get something to eat besides what he had packed. He had sent out a message to a friend arranging a lunch date, and decided to enjoy the walk back.

Suddenly, he heard a loud grumbling in front of him. *SNORT SNORT SNOOOOOOOOORT* Reu pulled out his sword, he knew what THAT sound meant. Ahead of him, he watched a pair of wild boars stare him down. No doubt they could smell Reu's fish. Well, these guys weren't going to be getting an easy lunch. Reu readied his sword and prepared himself for their attacks.

The first boar charged with a full force tusk attack; diving out of the way, Reu felt the boar rip into his side. The blow hurt, a lot. Reu was a bit surprised too. He wasn't one to mistime his opponent's attacks. Reu was surprisingly elusive, he attributed it to having a good feel for the battle space, more then he did having any type of special stat build.

While he was recovering from the blow, Reu was suddenly blindsided by a swiping claw attack from the other boar. It had gotten him also. "Damn, that hurt. That really hurt! Ok then, now it's MY turn." Reu readied his sword, and attacked the second boar, as it was still the closest. Unfortunately, when he attacked, he hit nothing but air as the boar eluded his attack, a very frustrating round of combat indeed.

The next time Boar 1 rushed at Reu, he was more then ready to dive out of the way of the attack; and in doing so, brought himself far enough away from the second boar that when it tried to rush Reu, he had more then enough time to see it coming, and quickly side-step. The second boar, having put so much feverish energy into it's attack, had its' momentum carry it face-first into a rather large stone. Reu, wanted to attack the boar, but it's crazy, drunken, dazed movements made it rather hard to hit and Reu ended up swinging at nothing. Disappointed but feeling slightly better due to the regenerative abilities of his combat healing, Reu prepared himself for the next round.

The first boar again launched a frenzied charge attack, once again smashing into Reu, who watched his health guage fall again. The boar let out a very loud SNORT in some sort of cheer, celebrating to itself its' successful strike. The second boar, still woozy from hitting itself against a rock, tried to attack Reu, but again ran itself into a bunch of rocks. Reu had a hard time not laughing at this, the poor thing couldn't find its way to save its life. Ha, oh well. Time to slice up some boar! Reu swung his sword overhead and delivered a crushing overhanded strike into Boar 1. He was intent on giving it payback for the two strikes it had previously landed.

As the first boar attacked, Reu again skillfully evaded the attack. This time, he deflected the charging boar, and side-stepped to the right. Allowing the boar to pass by, Reu swept his blade alongside the boar's broad-side sinking it in satisfyingly deep. The second boar, seeing the plight of its' fellow boar, sunk its claws into Reu, payback for Reu's strike on the first boar. It was an interesting chain of attacks, and Reu considered it worth it to deal the damage he did. The first boar was now on its' last legs, and once he was taken care of, the second boar wouldn't be any trouble at all.

Now the first boar attacked again, and again, Reu used a lock, sidestep maneuver to avoid damage. He could see the blue hair of the boar as it ran off in its new redirected direction. It's tusked mouth let out a large, angry snort too. As Reu was working on redirecting the attack, the second boar landed its own swipe by attack, though Reu shrugged it off...mostly. In response, Reu swung his sword around and attacked the boar, but he missed, and sunk his blade deep into the ground.

Seeing that he was stuck trying to pull his sword out of the ground, boar number one decided to charge, aiming for Reu who was standing next to his sword. At the same time, attacking from a perpendicular 45 degree angle, the other boar was trying to time it's charge so that when Reu was knocked back from boar one, he would be knocked back into boar twos' attack. Reu smiled, he knew they would try something like that. As the first boar got close, Reu suddenly swung himself around his sword, like a child swinging around a pole. As a result, both boars' attacks missed and Reu went back to trying to pull his sword out of the ground. It was really stuck.

The first boar ran straight into a large outcropping of stones. It's short legs were having a hard time giving it enough leverage to get back out. The second boar however, charged straight at Reu and went into a leaping attack, digging it's claws painfully into Reu. Frustrated, Reu ripped his sword out of the ground so hard, he ended up losing his grip and throwing his sword across the battlefield. It tumbled across the grassy knoll a short distance away. But at-least it's not stuck anymore...
