[SP-F1] Feeling Things Out

Recommended Posts

Vashtor awoke with a yawn, stretching out in the cheap bed he used at the simple inn that rested inside the City of Beginnings. His beginner col was starting to run out, he momentarily realized. If he didn't start working, he would have to deal with hunger and living on the streets.. "Meh..." He rolls over and stares out the nearby window, trying to get a grasp for how the virtual day was. After a brief stare he figured that it was a bright and sunny day, and seeing how he had nothing better to do, he wriggled his way out of his bed to flop his feet on the floor. After getting his clothing on and equipping his great axe, Vash headed out of the inn he rotted away inside of, and out into the grassy fields which surrounded the floor's capital. The way he figured, he'd have an easy time hacking some creatures up, and by game logic, explode them into delicious money!

Having finally been driven to leave the city, he found himself drinking in the feelings he had not felt in such a long time. The feel of the hot sun, the feel of the grass beneath his feet, and even a gentle breeze now and then. After taking a nice deep inhale of the fresh air he set out deeper into the fields. He happily kept his axe rested on his right shoulder, supported by the arm of the same side. The weapon could be described as an oversized woodsman's axe, but that didn't much concern him. It was his starting weapon, they are literally created to be replaced! Grinning sightly at that thought, he gave the weapon an up and down look and then took it into his hands and gave it a few swings, just to test its weight and his body's durability. He was surprised at how light it felt, not that it was exactly easy to swing around, but it was certainly manageable. He supposed that fighting some mobs would be easier than he thought, assuming he focuses on the only thing he had going for him. He grumbled softly as he looked down at his simple grey clothing and commented to himself "Oh, you will be the first to go." With that thought in mind he eyes forward to find some prey!

Naturally it didn't take long for Vash to find his first mob, the ever original if not universal, boar! With absent thoughts about the taste of bacon, ham, and other such delicious foods, he readied his axe and charged forward at the beast to try and land the initiating blow! With a successful cleave to the boar's body a prideful grin crosses Vash's face, his first blow was a crit! Sadly the celebration was going to be put off, as the boar was just as lucky. With a critical blow being returned to him via the boar turning quickly and bludgeoning Vash's middle with the side of its tusk!

With a shudder of fear from the boars successful attack and his sudden realization of just how meager his own HP was in truth, he readied his axe for another swing. He took a long breath, trying to focus on the fact that if he lands another blow he would win, and as long as the boar didn't crit a second time, he would be fine for another round. With a grunt he swings the axe as hard as his virtual arms would allow, scraping cleanly across the boar's face and sending its tusks flying a mere moment before the beast itself burst apart spectacularly! After a brief pause where he rested his axe upon his shoulder and let out a contented sigh, he heard a chime and saw a pop-up window show up to give him his results. He grinned happily as he found that a piece of armor had ended up in his inventory, along with a material he could save for later! So far, as far as he was concerned, despite a small bump in the road he was having some lovely luck! Unfortunately he'd need to get the items identified when he got back in town before he could use them, but it was a great place to start!

With whatever embarrassment he once felt for nearly being killed by a boar subsiding as a result of his lucky second blow and reward, he opted to try a more peaceful way to pass his time, but also gain some benefit from the world around him. Gathering! He didn't exactly have any items to help him get decent or numerous materials, but it was a lot better than having your brain cooked because you underestimated boars a second time. First he figured he would want more ore, simply by virtue of the fact that it takes more than one piece of armor to form a set, and furthermore he still had his starter axe! With that in mind he looked around and spotted some rocks in the distance, and thought he should check them out for any spare pieces of ore that may have been laying around! Naturally he had no luck in this regard, only finding pebbles and stones so getting some freshly made equipment would need to wait for a while yet.

Scratching his head in thought he shrugged and said to himself "Well... potions are good too. Maybe I will have more luck finding some herbs." Vash shrugged his shoulders and stepped away from the rock and towards a nearby tree that seemed to have several bushes and wild plants growing around it. Upon reaching the tree he impaled his axe into the ground and started to look at the wild plants. Humming in thought he reached forward and tried to grasp one of the plants. As if sensing that he was grabbing and trying to uproot the plant, it suddenly shattered apart, surprising Vash but not harming his morale yet. He decides to try to tug a few more to see what would happen. Time after time the plants would shatter in his grasp, easily taking a dozen times before he shakes his head and stands up straight and retrieves his axe. "... Maybe it only works if you have a profession." He nods softly, convincing himself for now, and deciding what it was he would try to do next, his eyes glaring at his more than half depleted healthbar.

Having come to the conclusion that gathering just would not work if he couldn't craft, he decides to head back towards town for now. The way he figured, it was better to call it an early day than risk his defeat simply because he was having some bad luck. With those thoughts firmly in his mind he begins the walk back into the city and towards the cheap inn that he kept rented ever since he came to the conclusion he would need a place to sleep since leaving Aincrad was not an option. After paying the usual fee he heads up to his room and shuts the door behind himself, happily placing his axe into his equipment before taking a seat in front of a small circular table in the corner of the room next to the window he stared out of when he needed more amusement.

After a brief spell of zoning out, Vashtor decided to start going through his inventory, deciding he would try to get his items identified later, he instead opted to summon a loaf of bread from his inventory and to his hand. He eyed the simple meal with a dramatic sigh, as it had been one of the few things he had eaten in some time. With that thought good and finished he takes a big bite out of his meal, eating the bread a bit at a time until it was good an eaten. If there was one nice thing about this world, it was that crumbs just shatter away rather than need cleaning up off the floor! Vashtor slumps back in his seat and stares up at the ceiling, debating his next action. Sleep, or keep fighting his instinct to just relax. His close scrape had resolidified the concept of death in his mind, after all.

With the concept of death firmly set in his mind, he found his way over to his bed and flopped down onto it, sighing softly as he tried to get comfy in the rather uncomfortable bedding. He napped happily for several hours, occasionally opening his eyes to stare at his healthbar and then the sun. When his health finally reached his full HP he blinked and finally realized, after checking his stats, that at some point he had leveled up! Rather pleased with himself and in private he does a little happy wriggle in his bed and hops up and out of the bedding. "Time for round two!" He excitedly took his greataxe out from his inventory once more and ran out of his room and the inn! He set out back to the huge fields where the monsters lurked, the sun hanging low in the sky. It was almost night, but he had time to relax he figured!

After a few minutes of looking he saw a boar in the distance, seemingly grazing and minding its own business. A perfect target! With his axe held firmly in his hands he starts towards the boar, ready to swing the moment he was in range! Just as he reached the boar he couldn't help but smile as he swing downward, axe colliding with the boar's low level face! Triumph going through him as he critically hit once more! As usual though, life decided to swing back and the boar lunged at him, dislodging the axe and getting a clean hit on Vash's unprotected body! After being shoved back a bit and regaining his footing he made a tsk of dissatisfaction, eyes moving up and down to check the damage on both ends. It would seem that he of the two had a far better time with that round, and he planned to take full advantage of that!

With his axe held to his side for a wide swing he slowly circled the boar, trying to watch the beast's movements so he could react in time. He kept his eyes planted very firmly on the beast, disregarding just about everything else until he thought he had a window to strike the beast down! Just as he thought, the beast tried to charge at him planning to hit him before he could swing his heavy weapon! He didn't know if the game was learning or anything, but it wasn't fast enough for sure. With a slight sidestep the boar ran clear past Vashtor, who happily too the chance to swing his axe into the boar's rear, causing the beast to shatter apart after a sharp squeal! Before long he heard a now familiar chime and hit the accept button for his new material. Naturally his luck would only go so far, but it didn't stop him from hoping he'd get another item out of it!

With the rush of a far more successful victory going through him, he rests the haft of his axe onto his shoulder and begins searching for his second kill. In his mind, he held the advantage in damage for certain, and his HP was at the same level as a boar. The odds were in his favor so after a good three minutes of walking and he spots another boar, he charges just as he had before to open the fight up! Unfortunately his confidence was greater than it should have been, as when the boars path-finding decided it wanted to take a few steps forward, it caused Vash's axe to miss entirely and get stuck in to the ground! Sensing the hostile presence the boar angrily turns and seeks to avenge its fallen brethren! It lunches at Vashtor and nails him in the leg, knocking him to the side and almost making him lose his balance, luckily dislodging his axe as he hopped to one side so not to fall!

Feeling a flush of embarrassment from his rather obvious screw up he readies his axe for a counterattack when he regained his balance, lunging forward as he swings his arms towards the boar! He had every intent of cleaving the beast in half, even if it was not plausible at his level! He had enough HP to survive even a critical, so he tried not to panic or get out of hand. He could still win! With those thoughts motivating him he lands a successful blow on the boar, axe cleaving into the side of the beast! The boar, taking offense to the attack, grunted and slammed its tusk against the hand which now rested near its head! This caused the axe to leave its body and do some damage to boot, Vash taking a few steps back to consider his options.

After a brief mental debate, he thought he would risk another round. Even if their health was currently even, he held the advantage. The odds of the boar doing anything overly powerful to him were low, and all he needed was one crit, or even the monster missing once and two hits, to finish the beast off and relax for the rest of the night! Unfortunately the gods had other plans that granting him and easy kill, as when he swung his axe he missed horrifically, not even landing close to the boar which, thank goodness, decided to charge right past him as a result of his fumbling!

Seeing how neither of them had made any headway in that turn, Vashtor decided to try another time. He promised himself that if he took even a single point more of damage he would quit the field and flee. The last thing he needed was to be a corpse, after all. That would only cause problems for everybody except the boar he was fighting at the moment. As if responding to his thought, just as he was getting ready to swing his weapon towards the boar, he felt a sudden impact! He was hit square, and he saw his health drop right down into the red! After reeling from the blow he shook his head and paled a little. He was far closer to death than he ever wanted to be, and so after unequipping his axe to remove its weight from the equation, he ran.

It took several minutes of sprinting and exhausting himself before the boar finally left aggro range, having chased after him on its surprisingly fast legs, but he managed to reach the city safely and without any further incident. He let out a long sigh of relief as he panted at the city's entrance, hands on his knees as he braces himself up to catch his breath. He didn't care if he looked pathetic or weak, he survived! As far as he concerned, that was a victory in itself seeing how one life is all you get. After finally calming himself he stands up straight and decides to treat himself to some real food to calm his nerves. He hadn't much col, but he knew how to get more, and he had a feeling things would only go better next time... Granted he had better armor and weapons when the time came.

Having his memory jogged by the thought of better armor and weapons, he smiled and started looking around for a merchant that offered free identification. He figured that it worked as a free service to draw in customers, for at least some merchants. With those thoughts going through his mind he wandered his way into a NPC shop and asked the owner "Hello, do you offer item identifications?" He starts swiping through his menus to find the two materials he had earned along with the piece of armor. While he did that, the merchant said with a curt nod "Yes, we do, show me what you have and I will tell you what you actually have." It didn't take long for Vashtor to return the NPC's nod and place the three items on the table for him to identify.

It took a few moments for the merchant to identify all his items, but soon the merchant gestured to the items and said "That is two iron ores, and a set of iron armguards. Is there anything else I can help you with?" Vash was eager to tap a few commands to put the items back into his inventory. "Not today, thank you, but maybe when I have more col!" He still had food to buy, after all. He gives his head a slight bow in thanks and then turns to leave the shop, humming happily to himself as he heads out to find a decent tavern!

It didn't take long for him to find a tavern bustling with people, it was late by this point, so people were settling down after their adventures much like him. It took a moment for it to sink in, but before long he came to the realization he could count himself among them! A sense of pride filled his heart as he stepped into the building and found a seat at the bar, waiting for the barkeeper to acknowledge him so he could make his order. "Can I help you?" the female NPC finally said, and he gave a happy smile. "Indeed! I'd like a baked potato, some steak, and a cup of cider!" The waitress nodded with an unusually natural smile and got to work sending his request to the kitchens in the back.

Thanks to the miracles of automated systems, Vashtor didn't exactly need to wait that long to obtain his delicious meal! It had been a long time since he smelled these scents, and without so much as a second thought he started to dig into the meal, a pleased look sticking itself to his face as he consumed his little feast. He would worry about the price in a bit, right now he was enjoying himself for the first time in a while. It was much better than bread and water, that was not even remotely in doubt for him!
