[SP-F5] Essential to Life and Happiness (Earning a Living)

Recommended Posts

Vashtor stepped through the desert city on the fifth floor, a piece of bread held tight in his hand as he looks around and explored, taking a good bite of the tasteless bread before he let out a sigh. He didn't believe for a moment that people would be content with something so simple and easy to get, and he wasn't even that picky about his meals. On one hand it filled his belly so he didn't have to deal with hunger, but on the other it just wasn't satisfying enough for him.

He let out another long sigh as he looked around at the nearby buildings. To him it was a huge waste of money to buy anything from a NPC, all it did was take money from players and make it disappear into the system, at least when dealing with other they might further the economy a bit. With one final bite he puts the last of his bread into his mouth, finishing his simple meal for the time being.

His aimless wandering through the streets continued for several long minutes, only made to feel longer in the heated and dry air that filled the floor, but just as his patience started to dry up along with the rest of the desert, he saw something that caught his attention. It was a medium sized building with several windows, and a paper notice set on the front. Curiosity taking its hold on him, he steps towards the building and begins to read the paper.

"The previous owner of this restaurant recently passed on as a result of a failed escort quest, leaving it vacant and in need of a new owner! Inside are five tables, twenty seats, and a bar with six bar stools for serving customers who wish to eat solo or simply desire take out. In the back is a kitchen with various cooking appliances such as a stove and a freezer.

If you are interested in becoming the new owner, then simply touch this paper and accept the quest. Once the quest is completed the building's ownership will be transferred to you, and your profession will be officially set to Cook."

Vashtor smiled a little as he read the paper, unable to help feeling a sense of humor at the size of this coincidence. He never really had any great cooking skills in the real world, but maybe he could try his hand at cooking meals for himself here. It'd give him something to do, people got something yummy to eat if he didn't screw up, and there was even a chance at gaining a profit to boot! Vashtor happily tapped the paper with his finger and a menu popped up to confirm he wanted the quest. All too eager to begin, he hit the accept button and turned on his heel, starting to equip his armor and weapons.

With his iron gauntlets equipped and his heavy axe resting on his shoulder, he set out into the desert while reading the conditions of the quest. It didn't take long for him to get the gist of it, he needed to find and slay four rabbits that lived in the desert. According to the quest though, they need to be defeated within three rounds or they will burrow into the ground to flee. That would make things slightly annoying since he had no accuracy buffs, but it wasn't a big deal he thought. It more made him wonder why such a simple quest would be placed on property, but he didn't waste time thinking too hard on it.

As Vash stepped through the sweltering heat of the desert he regretted not having the materials or money to get a cloak, seeming to forget every time he came to this floor that things only got hotter and hotter for him. Every once in a while he would take some water from his inventory and drink it, just to cool himself and make it feel less like he wasn't going to sweat to death at any moment. Thankfully though there were no sandstorms, then he really would have to worry about this health, but as long as he steered clear of the stronger mobs on this floor, even he should be fine. The quest noted that the rabbits were passive and weak, so he had a good chance of succeeding despite the discomfort he felt, at least in his mind.

It took easily a half hour for him to locate his first rabbit, the desert was vast and the enemies he had to avoid were many, this wasn't the safest floor for somebody of his level. Thankfully though he managed to keep his distance from most the mobs, and he didn't even stumble onto any living just under his feet! When at last he did spot the rabbit hopping around in the sand and he drew his greataxe. In his mind hunting a rabbit with a huge axe was a touch silly, momentarily forgetting this was an HP based game, not a 'how many pieces would this thing be cut into with each attack' type of game. He ran towards the harmless bunny with killing intent, managing to cleave the peaceful and nonhostile creature hard with one good attack! He saw its health plummet but not dip over the edge, making Vashtor realize that he needed to land two out of three hits to kill each of the rabbits! Unfortunately as he was doing the math in his head, he failed to realize the rabbit had leaped at him and bitten onto his ankle! "Ahh! Hey, get off of that!" Vashtor hops on one leg, kicking to try and dislodge the parasite!

Vashtor kept flailing his leg in an attempt to remove the creature, but then frustration set in and he raised his axe high over his head "Forget this!" He swings his axe downward hard, fully intent on cleaving the rabbit in two! It was at this time the rabbit let go of his leg and bounced off to get away from him, making Vashtor's axe sink harmlessly into the sand. Vash couldn't help but make a little whimper when he realized he had barely missed amputating his foot. Sure, it would have come back, but it's not a good thing to do! He pulls his axe back up securely into his grasp, staring down the rabbit as he readied his next move.

Vashtor takes a deep breath to calm his nerves, resisting the urge to wipe some sweat from his brow he readies his axe to the side of his body, closing the gap between himself and the rabbit! With a horizontal swing he slices his axe through the rabbit, finishing it off and setting his quest requirement up a point! He takes a moment to gather his breath before he lifts his axe up onto his shoulder, his spare hand shielding his eyes from the sun as he looked around for the next rabbit he'd try to add to his list of prey.

With his quest a quarter of the way finished, he found himself grinning proudly as he combed the desert. Briefly a movie fills his memories and manages a chuckle as he remembers what that reminded him of, but in his distracted state his foot got caught in something and he let out a surprised gasp as he fell forward onto his face! Laying facedown in the sand for a minute he hears his axe thump beside him, and thankfully not on or in him. He grumbles as he props himself up on his arms and looks to his foot, seeing it stuck in a hole. He tugs, dislodging his foot and letting him stand back up as he retrieved his axe. He patted himself down with his spare hand, wiping the sand off his sweaty face and the rest of him if he could. Taking a closer look at the hole it seemed he had found a burrow. Was it the same one that belonged to the rabbit he killed, or a different one? Deciding to risk it either way, he peaks into the hole to see if anything was inside. Unfortunately it was in fact empty, so either its owner didn't have much, or someone had robbed it before him. Either way, he shrugged and looked around to try and spot his second rabbit of the day.

LD 2 - Nothing found.

Thankfully for his sanity, after his embarrassing fall it didn't take him long to locate another rabbit in the distance. This one looked like it was sniffing around a cactus. He places both hands on his weapons handle and begins the charge, not wanting to give it time to flee, thinking the timer might start early if he acted too cautiously and wasted time! Unfortunately his haste all but guaranteed his fear, for it heard his approach with its long ears and zipped out of the way of the incoming weapon which swung harmlessly through the space the creature once occupied, running past the cactus as if to place it between the two of them.

Vashtor tsk'd in annoyance as the creature ran behind the pointed plant, making him say under his breath "Get it together, game, its a rabbit. It shouldn't play tactically." He readied his axe to swing again, grip tightening as he ran to circle around and get the beast that thought it as oh-so clever! The rabbit thought, intent on self preservation it seemed, kept running around the prickly plant as if it were from some children's cartoon, doing nothing but wasting time before it could flee! When Vash thought he had a shot to swing, he tried to adjust his weapon's path to match the rabbits speed, but that only caused it to get impaled into the cactus! He had never been happier he was wearing armored gauntlets than right then as he tried to pull the axehead from the leaking plant!

He finally tugged his axe from the cactus, grimacing as he saw it soaked in cactus juice. He set that thought aside for now as he looks back to the rabbit. At this rate it was going to get away unscathed, unless he landed an entirely perfect blow. Feeling a little disheartened he swore to at least attempt it, better than just getting into a hissy and letting the beast get away! Focusing all his strength into his next swing he raises his axe over his head and slams it downward with all the force he could muster! The blade cleaved the remains of the cactus in half as well as utterly destroying the rabbit, slicing it down the middle and causing it to shatter apart as all monsters would! He does a little jump for joy at the success at the last minute!

Vashtor smiled as he pulled his axe up out of the sand, soaked even further in cactus juice this time and the sand stuck to his weapon! He spent a good five seconds staring at the weapon to decide what to do about his predicament before said "Oh, wait." He goes through his menus and unequips, then reequips the weapon! The mess fell from where the axe used to be, and then returned to his hands not dirtied in the slightest! "Abusing the system FTW" He snickers as he would likely never say that if someone was around. On that note he started to wander again, eyes watching the horizons for the next bunny on the list!

As he walked he brushed sand from his clothes, not willing to strip down in the middle of the desert, both for reasons of decency and fear of a monster catching him off guard while he's vulnerable. As much as he loved the desert he would need to get proper attire for it in the future so he wouldn't have to go through these problems every single time he steps foot out of town. As he mentally whined to himself he saw movement in the corner of his eye and happily readied his weapon, his next target entering his sights! He didn't hesitate to charge after the creature, axe held to his side and cleaving towards the beast the moment it came in range, the force a bit more than he expected, but not enough to score him any bonus points. The bunny was sent flying a few feet before it stood itself back up in a more guarded stance, unable to return the favor to its attacker from where it was!

Seeing the rabbit unable to strike back right away he presses his advantage, stepping closer as he prepared his second swing, using the momentum of the first to get his weapon into position! It was at this moment the rabbit decided to channel the strength of Monty Python to lunge at Vashtor, biting at his arm just under the gauntlets he wore, making Vashtor gasp and drop his weapon in a panic, shaking his arm to try and remove the furry monster. "No! Bad! Bad rabbit!"

Vashtor kept shaking his arm for a short time before finally realizing he had another. With this rediscovered knowledge he tries to punch the rabbit, but it was at that moment the monster released him and dropped to the sand! Vash was going to try and punt the thing but it had already burrowed into the sand and gotten away! Vashtor frowned and crossed his arms as the beast escaped him, leaving him with nothing but a wounded pride. Oh, and also wounds. He sighs and kneels down to retrieve his axe, resting it on his shoulder as he continues the search. There was not much else he could do, honestly.

After that failed attempt he was determined to get the next one, and the gods didn't keep him from having a chance. Before long at all he spotted another rabbit and began his approach, axe held at the ready and his determination in his eyes! Using his surprise attack to his advantage, he manages to land a blow across the side of the monster as it tried to dodge, doing damage to it but making him gasp as it darted right at him and lands a critical bite on his leg, this time at least not latching on! "Agh! Come on!" He exclaims as his health drops officially into his uncomfort zone.

Feeling the burning desire to gain himself some vengeance, Vashtor brings his right leg back, and kicks forward! He punts the rabbit back a few meters and he gains a satisfied grin as the mob shattered from it! He laughed and pointed at the pixely-crystal things that filled the space the rabbit once existed in. "That's what ya get!" He can't help but be proud of himself for that, but it was still only a temporary victory. He needed to pin down one more!

((OOC: If anyone realizes I have no martial arts, attacks do a minimum of 1 damage and there is no reason a skill is needed to punch/kick. Attacking with the axe doesn't need a point in the skill to do 1 damage. Plus, the rabbit is dead either way, I get to choose how!))

Vashtor smiled when the chime alerted him that he gained a material from the rabbit. Considering how weak it was, that was nothing short of a miracle to him. After confirming it all he stretched out and said "Aaaaalright, one more and then I can get out of this sun. Whew!" He temporarily slips a gauntlet off of his hand and sandwiched it between his opposite arm and his body so he could wipe the sweat from his brow, his eyes scanning around as he kept himself in somewhat acceptable condition.

Seeing his hopefully final target in the distance he begins to approach, his breath a little ragged from being out in the heat for so long, ontop of being active the entire time. He hadn't exactly taken any breaks, and because of this when he swung his axe towards the monster, it seemed to have an easy time dodging away. After that though, when the rabbit struck out at him Vash had an easy enough time sidestepping and getting some distance from the monster. This left them even in the damage department, but him low on luck. He had two rounds to finish this at the moment, after all.
