[SP-F1] The Basics of Combat {Completed}

Recommended Posts

It wasn't an uncommon thing to see newbie players out in the grassy fields of the first-floor fighting mobs, but it certainly was strange that one of those players merely looked around rather than initiate combat. Username Tokki, he closed his red eyes and allowed the cool breeze to gently blow past him, his white hair becoming ruffled the longer he admired the sheer detail of such a simple thing. The moment the breeze died, his eyes snapped open, and a nearby boar was targeted. Drawing his dagger, Jia opted to switch to a reverse grip, only due to personal preference and comfort. Appearing before the boar, the boy moved in for a slash vertically across as he moved past the left side of the boar, a harsh red line appearing, before the creature broke apart into a colorful rain of rainbow shards. A single boar pelt was awarded for his efforts.

Quite surprised at what had just occurred, Jia merely muttered, "That...that was much easier than I thought. Did I get lucky?"

Unbeknownst to him, there was another boar within the area that was aggroed by Jia's sudden assassination of one of its brethren. The coding didn't do anything in terms of pack behavior or anything similar, but it certainly did result in the boar's action of targeting Jia and moving in for an attack. Catching him off guard completely, Jia was swept off his feet and knocked to the side by the charging beast, and found himself looking at the world upside down, with the boar slowly turning around for a second charge. Jia hurridly scrambled to get up, getting back into position to deal with the boar, and to additionally make sure he wasn't going to be caught off guard by more of the things.

Why did I just roll another 10. What are the odds.

Flipping the blade around, Jia ran at the boar and stayed alert for any movements it would make. With the wind rushing past his ears and blocking out any other noise, Jia brought the blade from the bottom upwards, the blade stabbing right through the bottom of the jaw and bringing the health bar of the boar to emptiness. Without another movement, the monster broke apart into shards like its predecessor. Jia knelt where he was, panting a bit. Once again, a boar pelt was awarded for his efforts.

"There's...still a long way...to go," he whispered in between each intake of breath, his weakness dawning on him.

It was ultimately time to turn his sights on riskier fights. Something told Jia that his current level was a bit low to begin tackling other things, so sticking to boars would be for the best. Perhaps he'd take on a few more to get used to the way combat worked. Realizing that he actually wasn't tired or hurt in the slightest, he got out of the kneeling position and stood up straight and confident that he'd be able to take on the next two without much trouble. Moving with purpose towards another boar, he lowered himself, knife held in a reverse grip like he did at the very start.

"Keep calm and strike," he told himself, moving at the boar and attempting to cut it. Being quite successful, he went ahead and the knife drew a harsh red line in the side of the beast, the wound glowing ever so slightly. If he hadn't caught its attention yet, he certainly did now.

Snorting, the boar targeted Jia and swung its head to the side violently, trying to get at him. Ever so slightly, Jia managed to avoid the bashing that would have resulted if the attack had connected. Lucky him. The boar was almost dead.

Stepping forwards, Jia lunged forwards with his right foot. Blade going straight forwards, he was trying to stab through the hide of the boar, right where he had cut before. Grass shifting, he, unfortunately, found himself slashing instead, another line being created by that cut. It didn't hold enough force in it, so it was not that big of a surprise that he boar remained still. He was at the mercy of the boar now, as his current position didn't allow for a quick recovery. The boar turned once more to bash him but missed again, having aimed too high to hit a target that had fallen. Now Jia was staring at the snorting beast head on.

Clumsily, Jia held the knife and tried to get it into a better grip, as only his index and middle finger were around the handle. Slipping up a bit because of the sheer terror felt by being in such close proximity to the boar that seemed too real, he was practically frozen in place. Not taking the initiative to attack, the boar backed up and began to scratch at the ground with its left foot, prepping a charge. At this, Jia realized that he had to do something unless he wanted to be trampled and hurt. Scrambling to recover and get into a stance, the knife was finally situated as the boar charged. Realizing that this was impossible to dodge entirely, Jia sidestepped, a scratch appeared in his side, the red line superimposed and his health falling near half. With this, he flicked his wrist and plunged the knife into the hide of the boar, the beast breaking apart before it stopped its charge.

"I'm weak. So weak. In the face of that, I was actually frozen with terror. So weak," he mumbled, repeating the words again and again, "Stronger. I need to become stronger. Much stronger."

A screen appeared, and gave a good grade item. It was obviously a type of chest armor made from leather, although Jia didn't really read and accepted the items. As for equipping it, he didn't just yet.

Looking towards another boar, he rushed at it like an idiot and actually missed somehow, having thought the dagger was in reverse grip. What a blunder to make, but his contact with the monster caught its attention. Realizing that he had done a stupid thing, he jumped back and luckily avoided the ramming of the boar. This was somewhat problematic for himself, as blood began to rush through his ears, or at least he thought there was. The dagger's positioning was reversed, the tip pointing down now. Jia would need to remember to remain mindful of his weapon's positioning from then on.

Taking the blade, he got in close once more to strike at the head of the boar, thinking he'd be able to hit the boar when he just tripped and fell, missing entirely. The blunder would have been funny had he not been in the middle of a death game facing off against his potential killer. Pulling himself together, he saw that the boar was ready to run him over and tried to get to his feet, realizing that he was a bit tangled. The boar rushed forwards, ramming him and sending him back a few meters, although now fully untangled. Just somehow, he managed to keep ahold of his dagger and only weapon.

Rushing at the boar again, he stabbed downwards, only to be thrown completely off balance by awkward footing, and feel to the side. It wasn't a pleasant fall, but it certainly saved him a few points of health. The boar had prepped itself to ram Jia, and missed entirely due to his sideways fall.

"I keep missing because I'm not calm. I need to keep calm. Remain calm."

Aiming to stab at the boar again, Jia sorely misjudged his attack. His arm reach as it was did not allow him to stab at the boar's legs and sides, and unfortunately for him, that meant he did no damage. He was beginning to get angry at his sudden lack of success. Compared to his starting performance, he was doing much worse, practically throwing away the expertise he had shown at the start.

The boar chose to swing its head to the side to lazily attack Jia, considering Jia's lack of success was causing the boar's programming to interpret it as an easy fight. Of course, being that Jia was on the ground, the swipe missed entirely, and allowed Jia time to recover and get up. The boar was somewhat unaware of this change, and slowly lumbered to face him.

Jia took a deep breath and stared his opponent in its eyes. His hands shook a bit, but it wasn't fear that made them that way. It was rage and anger at himself that had caused it. Without further ado, he brought the blade uo and to the right, a diagonal slash being made on the forehead of the glorified pig. Jia gave the faintest hint if a smile at his newfound success. If he kept at it, maybe he'd be able to get more done.

The boar in question retaliated, but failed in its attempt. Jia's strike had probably caused it some amount of harm that prevented it from striking back accurately. Would it last? Jis thought not, considering wounds that weren't too major didn't cause that much of an issue for both player and monster.

Moving in once more to attack, the distance this time was misjudged. He was so close, yet so far away. Only a few hairs of the boar's fur were cut away, doing nothing to damage the creature in the slightest. His success was indeed short-lived and variable. Jia was now aware of that, and chise not to be angry about it. He was weak, and as such he needed to grow stronger to combat it. That would be all in due time.

At this point, Jia was pretty sure his bad luck and lack of success was contagious. The boar messed up as well. Merely ramming its large head forwards, the attack feel short by a foot or so, nothing but a small gust of wind messing up Jia's hair. Taking the chance, he lunged forwards with his blade, managing the nick the Boar. Another lucky hit.

It seemed like the tides had finally turned. The boar's second attempt at ramming Jia also resulted in a failure. The creature was probably frustrated by the sudden change with Jia's success. Either that, or the learning system of the creature was being greatly weighed down by the erratic turn if events. The creature snorted and puffed a bit, scratching at the ground with its hooves, rather angry.

Taking another chance, Jia swiped with his blade, but did so practically blindly and without premediation. The edge of the knife went sailing past the snout of the creature and resulted in not a single point of damage done. Jia got back into his ready position, the hand holding the knife poised and ready to strike. The boar struck too slowly to the side, as it had wanted to disarm Jia. Instead, it merely battered at empty air. That attack was a bust on both their parts.

Collecting himself once he landed, Jia noted how great it was to not be able to feel pain. Without wincing or cringing, he git up without a singke problem, although there were definite scrapes and scratches on him. Taking the knife and pointing it at the boar, he chuckled a bit, knowing it was the end. Rushing at the creature before it could get any bearing, he brought the knife from one end of the boar to the other. It exploded in a shower of sparkles as expected.

Sitting down, Jia sheathed his knife and shook his head slightly at what he'd been doing. It was so much work alone to fight something. He should have gone and fought in a group with others. That would have taken a load off, but...he wasn't the kind that worked in groups. A pair was probably a bit better. Seeing a few rocks on the ground, Jia wondered if there were any materials around for crafting of items. Lifting the stones to take a look, none were viable materials. They were just random rocks.

A few shiny rocks were picked up to be examined. It seemed to be possibly iron or some other silvery metal. Further examination revealed nothing good out of the metal, as it was rusted and literally falling apart, as the chunks crumbled apsrt into rusted fragments.

Taking a few more stones, there was one that was coincidentially a geode. It was certainly a good find, and even better as the inside of the stone was confirmed to be completely filled with the crystal as the description stated it to be. Jia dared not open the geode though, as he did not want to damage the first meterial object he managed to find.

Another stone that should have been a geode was found as well. Jia was elated at first by the find, but then rather disappointed. The object was damaged and cracked on one side, which ruined the perfectly good material. He let the object drop, and watched it eruot into crystal shards.
