Purely through rumours, he had learned of a cave that existed nearly three days worth of walking south of the town of Vulcan, and within the cave rested a massive three-headed dog that dropped an interesting item. With his guild's recent absence in his life, he had taken to questing on his own, which was dangerous and reckless. He knew very well how risky it was to be a solo player, he'd nearly met his end enough to drill the point home, but his options were limited. He'd really only come to know lower leveled players as well, which meant the well of potential partners to take on his adventures was rather dry as of late. He was confident in his ability to read a situation well enough to determine whether or not to proceed, so with his trusty reptilian companion in tow, Takao set out on yet another adventure throughout the brutally warm landscapes of the ninth floor. It took him as long as he'd expected it to, which was nearly two days and three nights exactly. The morning of the third day had come quickly, and his green eyes slowly opened and began adjusting to the morning light. He'd located the cave the night prior after tracking the faint fiery glow of Hellhounds through the darkness, which lead him to the cave's entrance. He didn't dare to enter while tired from a day's worth of searching, so he resigned to resting for the night, and decided to take on the monumental task of traversing the cavern in the morning.He slowly rose to sit up and glanced down at the familiar that rested on his stomach, only lightly stirred by his movements. The brunet picked the monster up, then set it down on the bedroll he'd slept on the night prior before he stood up and stretched his virtual avatar's body. Resting out in the wilderness was definitely not a comforting activity, especially not for a light sleeper like him. Every little noise stirred him awake, and each time he woke up, it became that much harder to sleep. His exhaustion from the day before had afforded him plenty of rest, thankfully, and the light meal he chowed down on gave him a surplus of energy.After he finished eating, Takao approached the edge of the cliff that overlooked the cave entrance. A single hellish-looking canine stood on the flat expanse just outside, presumably guarding the entrance. He knew he'd have to take down a few of them in order to spawn the big one, which meant that he was just burning daylight. Takao turned to his familiar and woke it up, then collected the items he'd used overnight and returned them to the safety of his inventory. "Alright then." He said as he reached back and wrapped his hand around the handle of his sword, tightening his grasp firmly around the cloth that wrapped it. He estimated the black, loose stone covered plateau he stood upon to be around fifty to seventy five meters in any direction from the middle, with larger plateaus and tall cliffs surrounding it on one side, and a sheer drop off the other. The north side of the clearing was towered by the mountain holding the cave's entrance, and before the entrance stood a snarling hellish looking canine, whose eyes immediately began to glow red upon seeing Takao. With his familiar nowhere in sight but the buff it provided him with still active, he engaged the canine. Takao started with a sword skill executed to near perfection. Takao wasn't going to let the monster take an offensive stance in the fight, so he continued on with his pressure by shifting his stance again to prepare a second sword skill. His movements were precise and natural as his form took shape, and in mere seconds he had preformed the necessary stance for a sword skill's pre-motion. His blade began to glow a bright, vibrant green colour, and in the following instant he allowed the system to take full control. By the time the canid monster had recovered from his previous sword skill, the rigid paralysis that overtook his body during the post-motion had already worn off, and his body effortlessly slid into another stance to activate yet another sword skill. His skill in executing the latter afforded him just enough time to interrupt the Hellhound whenever it finally gathered its artificial senses enough to try launching an attack. Just like the few times before, Takao stopped the monster in its tracks, although this time its health gauge had been entirely depleted. The monster froze for a moment, then flickered and shattered into hundreds of colourful data fragments. The brunet glanced up at the cave entrance after confirming his success, and rolled his head over his shoulders. "Alright then. Something about the situation didn't sit right with him, and although he trusted his ability to read a bad situation, the cave wasn't setting off any mental red flags. He was right to be cautious before entering, considering what exactly was at stake. He shook the unease from his head and, with his sword in hand, entered the cave. The narrow opening let off into an expansive cavern, with an eight meter wide pathway on the right, and a sheer drop with a flowing river of molten magma at the bottom. Although the cave was dark, he was still able to see well enough, although the large hellish canid that had snuck up on him had gone under his radar. He heard the snarling just in time to turn and put his arm between the monster's teeth and his neck, though the beast still seemed to chip away at some of his health. However, unfortunately for the black-skinned canid, it had failed to notice that Takao had already slid into one of the many memorized stances to activate the usage of a sword skill. He adopted the form almost effortlessly, and just as the beast was about to close in and leap at him for another attack, Takao released control to the system. His blade was guided with unmatched speed and precision, and the monster was thrown back from the superior force of Takao's attack. Takao 0 Posted August 19, 2015 Author #9 Report Share Posted August 19, 2015 (edited) The hellhound recovered much faster than Takao had been anticipating, and while stuck in the paralysis that came from his previous sword skill's post-motion, he found himself unable to defend himself or evade properly. The post-motion rigidness had only just barely worn off when the hellhound's jaws clamped down on his left arm again, its digital serrated teeth tearing through his digital clothing and flesh. Luckily for Takao, and unluckily for the hellhound, his armour prevented a good deal of damage from getting through, and reduced it to an absolute minimum. Takao, who was feeling no pain from the bite, retaliated with ease by thrusting his sword through the monster's stomach. It slid across the ground and whined in simulated pain as its digital flesh scraped the hard volcanic ground. Magma spewed from the flowing river below, illuminating some of the cavern with its unsettling orange glow. His body loosened after the system relinquished control, and he rolled his shoulders after reasserting his authority over his digital avatar's body. The Hellhound had just begun to stagger and wobble to its feet when his blade sliced through its head, cleaving it off in one clean motion. The beast froze, flickered, and then shattered and burst into countless shards of scattered data. He dismissed the menu that appeared in his face and glanced further into the cavern. It was illuminated oddly, as if the molten lava was acting as a light source. Takao 0 Posted August 19, 2015 Author #11 Report Share Posted August 19, 2015 Another few minutes of walking had lead him into a more expansive cavern that was illuminated by several large holes in the ceiling, as well as two shallow rivers of flowing magma on either side to create a raised platform of sorts. Standing in the middle of the platform was another Hellhound, and behind it in the cave wall was a large crevasse shrouded in shadows too dark to see through. He had a good idea of what lurked just beyond those shadows. His survival and battle healing skills were in a never-ending battle against the harsh environment, though they seemed to be winning the fight, as his health had only wavered slightly and had since returned to full. Takao engaged the Hellhound, fully aware that once he killed it, the monster that lurked beyond the cave's darkened opening would emerge. With his body loosened and free to move as he desired, Takao prepared another immediately. He found them to be the best way to inflict damage, as regular attacks did very minimal damage, and he typically only resorted to using them when monsters were low enough on health that it wouldn't be a wasted expenditure of his energy to do so. Sword skills were rather taxing on the digital body after all, and resting his mind was important. The system-guided sword skill brought his blade both to and then through the monster to inflict a hefty chunk of damage and throw it back to the ground before it could even react. As the rigidness took over his body once more, he found his gaze resting on the crevasse in the wall. "This shouldn't be too difficult." His advance was far from perfect, he didn't possess some unstoppable offense that would overwhelm any opponent. If anything, he possessed a fair deal of luck, because a bad metaphorical roll of the dice could surely stop him in his tracks. Yet he seemed to be rolling well, because his sword skill, guided by the system, threw the Hellhound back to tumbling across the volcanic stone ground. "Just one more hit, then the big guy..." Immediately after the system relinquished control and his body loosened upon returning to his control, he shifted back into another pre-motion for his sword skill. There was so little time between the rigidness of the system preventing movement and the system retaking control of his body that he had momentarily forgot that he was even in control . His movements felt automated, almost systematic, yet still human in an odd way. The system took back control as soon as he allowed it to, and vanquished the Hellhound with a swift strike through its neck to separate the digital head from its digital shoulders. The beast froze, then shattered into the familiar shards of data he had grown very accustomed to during his time in Aincrad. But his attention wasn't on the crystallized data that fluttered away in the simulated breeze. His attention was firmly set on the rumbling crevasse that was shrouded in darkness. His green eyes set upon the three pairs of glowing red orbs that glared at him from the darkness of the crevasse, and his stance widened in preparation. The light from the empty cavern slowly revealed the beast that had been looming in the darkness, waiting for an unsuspecting player's approach. As the monster slammed its front paws down on the ground and fully revealed its three snarling heads, the loose rocks above the cavern's entrance crumbled and fell, effectively blocking his only means of escape. He turned back to the monster after briefly examining his predicament, and watched as it began its advance toward him. The thunderous sound of all four heavy legs slamming into the ground as the heavy beast charged at him echoed throughout the mostly empty cavern, the sheer force stirred the molten magma below to cause minor geysers of lava to shoot into the sky. It was all quite cinematic, though Takao wasn't afforded the opportunity to enjoy the scenery.The three heads of the beast all lunged at once, though he proved to be just a bit quicker. Takao dove forward, ducked under the heads just as their teeth snapped shut behind him, and rolled into a tumble before returning to his feet and sprinting forward the hind end of the monster. A mere instant later upon doing so, the black and white sword began to glow a bright and vibrant green colour, and emitted a low hum and whirring noise. His control was relinquished to the system, which guided his blade up and across the beast's right side, over where its rib cage would be if the in-game models even possessed that much depth. By the time he'd completed the sword skill, he was in the air above the three-headed beast, each head whining and howling from their simulated pain. His boots landed on the fur-covered back of the massive canid, which immediately alerted the monster to his location. It's left side collapsed while its right pushed off the ground, slamming both its back and Takao into the hard volcanic rock below.Although he felt no pain, it was hard to not feel as though the wind had been knocked out of him, for it went without saying that something like that happening to a real person would've been much worse. The brunet pushed off the ground and kicked his legs up from underneath him, effortlessly leaping back up onto his feet as the monster continued its roll. The beast was just staggering back onto its feet when his blade, which was glowing a familiar bright and vibrant green colour, slammed into its right foreleg and cleaved through the limb with ease. It hadn't been severed, his blade lacked the size and weight for such a feat, but it had weakened the limb enough to collapse the beast once again. The system, augmented with his own personal skill and precision, guided his blade through the limb and out the other side with enough force for Takao to land about five meters away. The rigidness took over his body as the system began to relinquish control of the avatar. By the time the monster had even conceived the idea to climb back up onto its feet, Takao was able to calming walk up to it with his sword held out to the side. He prepared a sword skill, just as he had done the previous two times, and waited for an opportunity. When the beast applied weight to the limb closest to Takao, he released control to the system, and allowed his blade to be guided through the monster's leg once again. A large glowing red wound was left in his sword's wake, and the beast collapsed yet again. Takao was only stuck in place for a few seconds before the system returned control of his avatar's body, and he began to move toward the front of the beast. Three different health gauges hovered beside each individual head, a detail he had failed to notice when the beast first charged at him. He noticed his damage had been primarily done to the right most head, which made perfect sense. He had only attacked that side of the body, so it seemed as though all the damage had been channeled to that side's health gauge, which had nearly run out. He estimated the numerical total to be somewhere near the Hellhounds he had been fighting earlier, only on each individual head rather than in total.Through the usage of yet enough sword skill, Takao plunged his blade into the weakened beast's rightmost head, and carved away the last of its health. Takao 0 Posted August 20, 2015 Author #20 Report Share Posted August 20, 2015 (edited) Despite having taken down one of the three heads, which now hung lifelessly to the side of the monster, it didn't seem to slow the beast down in the slightest. The wounds on its legs surely prolonged its recovery, but by the time Takao had managed to get back onto his feet, the beast was already charging. He thought to take a step back, but after the sole of his boot pressed his weight onto the very edge of the stone platform, the ground beneath it crumbled and fell into the lava below. He glanced back over his shoulder, then to the beast, and made the choice to proceed forward instead. He prepared a sword skill while the monster charged, and unleashed it when the beast was within range. His blade carved through the left side of the monster, though his movements unfortunately put him in line with the beast's head.
