<<Earning a Living>> [SP-F4] Dashing Through the Snow! - Complete!

Recommended Posts

Emerath had been crafting quite a bit, and now that he had been learning how to craft and taking notes and doing, you know, all the proper things that an alchemist was supposed to do, he supposed it was time to get back out and gather some mats again. Although he thought back to his original attempts at doing so, and they weren't exactly great. Emerath didn't want to think about that though. It was time to earn himself a living (again!).

Emerath made his way to the edge of the town where his shop was situated and and out into the fields. He shivered a bit, still not used to the cold here entirely. Especially when he went to other floors and the climate was so different. He wasn't entirely sure if he would find anything of use here for alchemy, but it never hurt to try.

Emerath made his way out into the snowy fields as he trudged along, holding onto himself for warmth. He had no idea where to start looking for materials and what materials might actually be hidden in the snow on this floor. He suddenly wished that he had access to the internet just so he could look up guides on the various floors and the crafting materials he would be able to find. He would occasionally stop and push around some snow to try to find something, but nothing made itself readily obvious to Emerath as he searched. He cursed under his breath and continued to explore the snowy landscape.

Emerath was starting to shiver a bit as he trudged his way through the snow. He always thought he'd like the cold more, considering in real life he lived in a warmer climate. If he was going to continue to live on the fourth floor though, he had better get used to this. He did like the snow, it was a wonderful, white, puffy thing. He had considered making a snowman for a moment. That was something he had never gotten to do at home because it never snowed at home. But that would be distracting. And take far too much time out of all the not gathering he was doing right now.

As Emerath wandered through the winter wonderland he considered his recent successes in the world of Aincrad. He had managed to make and replicate a perfect health potion, and his shop had so far sold all of its stock. He was doing good as a beginner, all things considered. He just hoped that he could keep up the momentum. He continued to push through the occasional snowdrift, and his shoes were beginning to get bogged down by wetness. It might get to a point that he would need to head back towards the city just to warm up again, but now wasn't that time. Emerath was determined to find something in these frigid lands that could be used to craft.

Emerath was figuring that for all the good it was doing him, he may as well have just trained with the NPC in town and asked if she would let him keep any mats, but then she would just tell him to get some of his own and he would never pass the quest and blah blah blah. The quest was repeatable for bonuses, which was great, but it was such a chore having to go out and actually do something about it. Why couldn't these things be free? Emerath groaned as he continued to trudge on, and then he was tripped up by a root sticking out of the ground. He managed to keep his footing as he stumbled forward, surprised and confused. Then he turned around, reached down and tugged at the root that had tripped him up. He pulled on it, and it gave way. "Huh, I suppose I might be able to use this."

As Emerath trudged along in the snow, he realized something. You know that your day is not going well when the best hope you have of finding something useful is accidentally tripping over it. He wasn't even sure if what he had found was actually useful, but he had hope. He looked for something green poking out of the snow. Something that might indicate alchemist materials. Maybe a bush, or a tree, or something. Instead he was dragging his feet hoping to trip on roots. Emerath seriously wondered what he was doing with his life.

Emerath was pretty much at the point that all he saw was white. Yeah, there was the occasional green. Trees here and there, and Emerath hoped for another root to trip over, but it was all to no avail. But that was when he saw it. A red contrast to some of the white and green all around him. He rushed over to it, and happened to see that he had found a berry bush amongst all the cold and foliage. He gave a cry of happiness as he gathered up a bunch into his inventory.

Emerath was considering going to the lake. Despite that it was a popular area for players that didn't mean it was completely always picked clean. But he eventually thought better of it, as he decided to just continue to look for materials out in the field. He was steadily getting farther and farther away from the city, which probably wasn't the best idea. But Emerath also considered that perhaps the farther away he got the more likely he was to find materials, considering it would have had less players all over it. Of course, it was also more dangerous, so there was that.

Emerath was starting to run out of things to think about as he trudged along through the snow. In fact, he was fairly certain his mind might actually be going entirely numb. Made him think of another game he had played and an actual spell called "Mind Freeze" that would stop all casting by a player. Emerath chuckled to himself, and then rubbed his hands together for warmth. It's too bad this game didn't seem to work like others in terms of crafting materials. They seemed so few and far between. Emerath told himself not to get frustrated though. He had found a few things, and he would find more. He just needed to keep looking.

Emerath had begun to lose feeling to his hands. He really was not built for this type of weather. Next time he would make it a point to actually wear gloves for this type of thing. He had also frozen his hands a bit from collecting the cold materials that he had managed to find and get a hold of. He shook his hands and blew into them to try to warm them up. It didn't do much but it helped a bit. He just decided to make it a point to make sure he kept his hands in his pockets until he actually needed to use them to collect materials.

Emerath was getting really exhausted. He found himself falling to his knees for a moment in the snow. The cold was getting to his feet now, and he didn't have enough adrenaline from finding materials to keep himself going. Though he wasn't sure he was even looking all that hard for them in the snow. Finally, he had decided that he would head towards the Frostbite Lake. At least there he could see other people and perhaps that would give him a bit of warmth as he searched for some stuff. Despite that he was alone. He wouldn't think of that though.

As Emerath made his way towards the social area that was Frostbite Lake, he felt a little better to have some direction in the way of what he should be doing. He trudged through the snow, and it felt like less of a mindless wandering through white, and more of a, "Hey, I'm going to go do this idea that might help." kinda thing. Sure enough, it turns out to have been profitable, as Emerath reached the lake and immediately noticed some odd greens popping out of the ground. They were a greenish blue, and seemed to reflect a bit of light. Emerath stashed it in his inventory, hopeful that it would be useful.

As it turned out, coming to the lake was a very good idea. Emerath was finding those little plants all over the place as he continued to gather them up. He walked around and picked them out of the ground, occasionally looking to see if anyone was watching him. Really though, people were too busy ice skating or fishing to really pay him any mind. He still was shiverring though, despite the energy he had gotten from finding some useful plants. He would make it a point to actually go and find a tailor later.

Emerath had been so furiously picking herbs from the ground that he hadn't really been paying attention to the fact that he would probably clean this place out after a while. It wasn't really until he looked around that he realized that there were no more greenish blue herbs anywhere. Emerath must have picked them all. But, Emerath supposed it was time for a break anyway, as he made his way to a nearby bench to sit. The bench was cold, of course. But that was to be expected in this climate. He stayed sitting in it though, hopeful that eventually his butt would warm it up. He needed to rest anyway, more than he needed to worry about how cold this bench was.

It was an odd thing. Emerath had been in out in the cold for so long, that he was actually starting to get warm. He had begun to nod off on the bench he was sitting on. This day in the cold had been so exhausting for him. And as he nodded off, his body started to feel warm. But then Emerath's brain told him that this was a horrible thing, and that he needed to get moving again. Emerath sat up with a start and looked around. People were still just going about their normal business. Of course, Emerath was the only one dumb enough to not wear as much protective clothing as he should have. He sighed and slowly rose from the bench as he brushed off some of the snow that had accumulated on him and started off again on his search.

Emerath decided that since there had been no respawns of materials around the Frostbite Lake, he ought to begin heading back to the city and try to find a few more things along the way. He still had to actually talk to the NPC to complete the quest, and he thought it might best to do it sooner rather than later, before he was found by some other adventurer as just an icicle in the snow. Emerath also didn't want to be some caveman found years from now as some artifact of the game. None of those things sounded fun to him. He supposed he was over dramatizing this whole cold thing, but he supposed that's what he got for living in a desert in real life, and then setting up shop in a cold climate.

Emerath was back to trudging along in the snow, and the city was in his sights again as he went along. He supposed that it was better than looking at all the white around him. That was when his foot caught on something, and rather than catching himself Emerath ended up falling face first into the snow. He groaned, and rolled over, looking to see what had caused him to fall. It was that same root he had found earlier. He sat up and gave a sigh. He supposed that was one way to find materials, but that didn't mean he liked it. Nonetheless, he scooped the root into his inventory.

Emerath was back on his feet in no time, and back to trudging along. The city was even bigger now, and Emerath couldn't wait to get himself back into his warm shop and not have to think about all the mess that he had been through trying to get this quest done. Idly, since he wasn't finding any materials, Emerath wondered if he could actually make himself a warmth potion. Then he wouldn't need to worry about this type of thing at all. He could just run around the fourth floor like he would any other floor and be perfectly fine. Emerath supposed that wasn't possible though. He'd just make a mental note to do this quest on the first floor from now on.

Emerath was very close to the city now, but that was when he noticed more of the berries that he had seen earlier. These things stuck out like a big red sore thumb in the whiteness that was the entirety of this floor. He happily ran over and gathered up a bunch. These ones were right next to the city walls, so Emerath thought that maybe he ought to do a bit more searching closer to the city in hopes that he could find just that many more remaining materials. The more the better right? Then he didn't have to rely on the NPC for everything. Just some things.

Emerath was right in his thinking, as he continued to skirt the walls and found a few more berry bushes. He ran over to them and happily scooped them up into his inventory. I should've been doing this the entire time... he thought to himself as he thought about all that time wasted out in the field. It made sense too. People would want to stay close to the warmth of the city, so place a bunch of crafting mats in the area. That and crafters probably wouldn't normally want to venture far and into the distant, dangerous areas. Emerath shrugged, and decided to give one last look before heading back into the city.
